- Which Fierce Alpha Disguises as a Beta to Abduct a Wife?
- Chapter 21 - Canceling the Engagement
“That won’t do,” Zhou Yunqiu refused. He was still planning to take the opportunity to “devour” Jiang Huaiyan.
Zhou Yunqing saw right through his little scheme at a glance. “Don’t play with fire and end up getting burned.”
“I won’t, I won’t. I know my limits,” Zhou Yunqiu replied. He was only going to “eat” Jiang Huaiyan; he wasn’t going to do anything else.
Since Jiang Huaiyan was a Beta, he wouldn’t be able to mark him anyway. He would still be a free Omega.
“You aren’t allowed to get too close to him. He isn’t simple,” Zhou Yunqing said, his face full of seriousness.
“Not simple? Did you find something out?” Zhou Yunqiu asked suspiciously.
“I found nothing. Everything we found was exactly what he wanted us to see. Anything we didn’t want to see was completely untraceable. It’s too clean.”
“Isn’t being clean a good thing?” Zhou Yunqiu pouted.
“Being too clean is actually abnormal.” In Zhou Yunqing’s view, in this society, no one could be that clean. It was a case of “too much is as bad as too little.”
Zhou Yunqiu pursed his red lips, not caring much. “Anyway, he won’t hurt me.”
“Are you under his spell?”
“Not at all. I am very clear-headed.” Clear-headed enough to only want to get Jiang Huaiyan into bed.
“It had better be as you say.”
The two talked upstairs for a long while before finally heading down. Dinner was already prepared. The three of them sat down to eat together.
During dinner, Zhou Yunqing brought up the attack on the villa from the other night. “The people have been found, but I feel like they haven’t fully confessed everything.”
Jiang Huaiyan maintained a calm expression, acting as if he wasn’t the one who had tampered with the situation. In reality, he had used his pheromones that night to lock onto those men. To avoid exposing his identity as an Alpha, he had instructed Duan Mingxu to find them first and handle the matter. He could not let them reveal his true gender.
“Furthermore, they were all S-class Alphas. How did you manage to suppress them? And why did you damage their glands? You are a Beta; you aren’t affected by their pheromones.”
Jiang Huaiyan answered calmly and collectedly, “Even though I’m not affected by pheromones, they are S-class Alphas precisely because of their glands. That means once their glands are damaged, they lose most of their combat effectiveness. It was the fastest way for me to strike them directly.”
Zhou Yunqing raised an eyebrow; the explanation was flawless.
“Your skills are truly hidden,” he remarked. So many Alphas had been subdued by a single Beta.
“Your skills are also hidden, Eldest Young Master,” Jiang Huaiyan replied with a polite smile.
When applying to be Zhou Yunqiu’s bodyguard, the final test had been a sparring match with Zhou Yunqing. In the past, those who could defeat Jiang Huaiyan were few and far between. Yet, Zhou Yunqing had fought him to a draw, and that was while holding back his true strength.
“Eat up. After you finish, you should leave first. Qiuqiu will stay with me for a couple of days.”
“Brother, I don’t want to stay here,” Zhou Yunqiu protested. He wouldn’t be able to flirt with Jiang Huaiyan if he stayed there.
“You little ungrateful thing, how long has it been since you spent time with your brother?”
Zhou Yunqiu pouted. “Fine, two days then.” It really couldn’t be any longer; he could only endure two days without being close to Jiang Huaiyan.
“Worthless,” Zhou Yunqing sighed helplessly, beginning to wonder if hiring Jiang Huaiyan for his brother had been a mistake.
After dinner, Jiang Huaiyan departed first. Zhou Yunqiu was very reluctant to see him go, but there was nothing he could do.
“Stay home. I’m going out for a bit,” Zhou Yunqing said as he changed into a formal suit. He was holding several gift boxes.
“Brother, what are you doing?”
“I’m going to break off your engagement. It’s better to resolve this sooner rather than later.”
“Don’t you need me to go?”
“No need.” He would face the Fang family’s wrath alone.
Zhou Yunqiu gave Zhou Yunqing a grateful hug. “Brother, you are truly too good to me. You’ve raised my standards for Alphas significantly.”
“Is that my fault?”
“Of course not!” Zhou Yunqiu laughed happily.
“Wait for me to come back. Be good.”
“Mhm, I’ll be very good.” On such an important occasion, he naturally wouldn’t cause any trouble.
At the Summit.
Jiang Huaiyan and Duan Mingxu were drinking in the top-floor office.
“Come, let’s celebrate. My people successfully obtained a DNA sample from Zhou Yushen. Soon, we’ll know if you two are actually related,” Duan Mingxu said, raising his glass.
Jiang Huaiyan clinked glasses with him. “So slow.”
Duan Mingxu rolled his eyes. “You try it then. You have no idea how difficult it was. I don’t know what that Eldest Young Master of the Zhou family is guarding against so strictly.”
“He’s conducting research. It might be related to that,” Jiang Huaiyan replied. The Zhou family was originally a pharmaceutical company, and their research had always been at the cutting edge. Zhou Yunqing himself was a senior researcher; since taking over, he had launched two new projects, both related to glands. As for the specifics, they were still confidential.
“But that man is something else. He looks like an Omega, but he’s actually an Alpha.” Duan Mingxu suddenly let out a sound of surprise. “Do you think he could be an Omega pretending to be an Alpha?”
“Are you that bored?” Jiang Huaiyan countered. What Omega could fight him to a draw? None.
“I’m just guessing. With a fake like you around, I suspect everyone’s real gender now.”
Jiang Huaiyan felt speechless.
Duan Mingxu suddenly leaned in closer. “If Zhou Yunqiu isn’t related to you by blood, do you plan to take him for yourself?”
“I don’t.”
“Then let me have him.”
Jiang Huaiyan glared at Duan Mingxu like a god of death.
Duan Mingxu swallowed hard. “Not for myself! Someone else asked me to make an introduction.”
“Who?” Who would dare eye Zhou Yunqiu? He was still technically engaged.
“Someone with quite a background. Apparently, they’ve had their eye on Zhou Yunqiu for a long time but never had the chance to get close. That’s why they approached me.”
“Impossible. Tell them to give up on that idea,” Jiang Huaiyan refused immediately.
“Why refuse so quickly? Since you don’t want him anyway… given that person’s status, Zhou Yunqiu would be marrying up.”
“Don’t let me hear those words again.” Jiang Huaiyan set his glass down, his voice laced with a chilling coldness.
Seeing his firm stance, Duan Mingxu could only drop it. “Fine, fine. If you don’t agree, then forget it. I didn’t have much hope anyway.”
“And don’t let that person get near Zhou Yunqiu.”
“What exactly do you mean by this? Are you just his bodyguard, or are you feeling possessive? A bodyguard has no right to control who a person chooses as their Alpha,” Duan Mingxu said, expressing his suspicion.
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t answer directly, only saying, “He is engaged.”
Just as he said that, Duan Mingxu’s phone began to ring incessantly with the sound of incoming messages. He opened them, and the group chats were exploding.
“Oh! Latest news! Zhou Yunqing went to the Fang family to cancel the engagement! The reason: Fang Yanting was messing around outside!”
Jiang Huaiyan’s heart skipped a beat. He took out his own phone to check. The matter was already trending on the hot search, showing that the Zhou family had left the Fangs no room for negotiation.
Zhou Yunqiu had really canceled the engagement with Fang Yanting.
In that case, he… no, it still wouldn’t work. There were still many things standing between them. However, he still couldn’t restrain his happiness.
“And you say you’re not interested? The corners of your mouth are turned up so high you could hang a wine glass on them.”
“Shut up. Find out where Fang Yanting is right now.”
“What are you planning to do?” Duan Mingxu looked at him warily.
