- Chapter 20 - He Is a Beta; What You Need Is an Alpha
Jiang Huaiyan sucked in a sharp breath and hurriedly pushed Zhou Yunqiu off of him.
With a flushed face, Zhou Yunqiu sat back in the passenger seat and fastened his seatbelt. The two of them took a moment to tidy their slightly disheveled clothes before finally lowering the car window.
“Qiuqiu, what were you doing?” Fang Yanting asked, sounding a bit puzzled. It had taken a surprisingly long time just to lower a window.
“I just finished my exams and we were about to leave. What is it?” Zhou Yunqiu replied with a flat expression, not even giving Fang Yanting a direct look.
“I wanted to ask you out for dinner.”
“What a pity. I already have plans with my brother tonight.” As Zhou Yunqiu spoke, he glanced at the time on his phone. “If there’s nothing else, we’ll be going now.”
“So rushed?” Fang Yanting looked at Zhou Yunqiu’s face, sensing that something was off. His gaze shifted past Zhou Yunqiu toward Jiang Huaiyan in the driver’s seat.
Jiang Huaiyan was looking straight ahead with an expressionless face, but his lips were a bit red—as if they had just been kissed. Fang Yanting’s heart skipped a beat as he looked back at Zhou Yunqiu’s lips; they were also slightly red.
“You two…” Before he could finish his question, a beautiful Omega called out to him from behind.
Fang Yanting’s expression changed slightly, and he hurriedly explained, “Qiuqiu, don’t misunderstand; that’s my cousin.”
“No misunderstanding. Go spend time with your ‘cousin.’ We’re leaving.” Zhou Yunqiu raised the window and signaled Jiang Huaiyan to drive.
Jiang Huaiyan glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the Omega already hugging Fang Yanting. That embrace was certainly not the kind shared between cousins.
“You don’t mind?” he couldn’t help but ask Zhou Yunqiu.
Zhou Yunqiu pouted. “I do mind.”
Jiang Huaiyan’s heart twitched slightly.
“But what I mind is that he interrupted us,” Zhou Yunqiu added, licking his lips as he fantasized about their kiss. “I hadn’t had enough yet.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…” I shouldn’t have asked—though I am a little happy.
“Jiang Huaiyan,” Zhou Yunqiu suddenly called out to him seriously.
“Hm?” Jiang Huaiyan kept his eyes on the road.
“I’m seeing my brother today to talk to him about calling off the engagement with the Fang family.”
Jiang Huaiyan couldn’t help but steal a glance at him.
“I’m not marrying Fang Yanting, and I’m not going to keep dragging things out with him. He can find his Omega, and I’ll find my… ‘Beta’.” Zhou Yunqiu placed a specific emphasis on the word “Beta.”
It was unmistakably clear who he was referring to.
Jiang Huaiyan feigned composure. “Are you sure you want to break the engagement with Young Master Fang? Your families are a perfect match, and you’ve known each other since childhood.”
“I’m sure. He doesn’t like me and I don’t like him; there’s no point in staying tied together. Besides, he no longer has any ‘utility value’ to me.”
Jiang Huaiyan really wanted to ask: If he still had utility value, would you not break it off? If Zhou Yunqiu lost interest in him, would they also revert back to a standard bodyguard-employer relationship?
“Of course, part of the reason is also because of you.” Zhou Yunqiu’s eyes were full of springtime affection. “Since you don’t like it, I’ll reclaim my status as a free man.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“From now on, you can be completely without scruples.”
“Young Master, you need to stay calm for a while.”
“I am very calm.”
Jiang Huaiyan didn’t respond. He couldn’t tell him that even without an engagement, he wasn’t without scruples. His concerns were many—so many that he didn’t dare take a single step forward.
The car soon arrived at Zhou Yunqing’s villa. Zhou Yunqing hadn’t finished work yet, so only the servants were home preparing dinner.
Zhou Yunqiu excitedly grabbed Jiang Huaiyan’s hand. “You stay on guard right here. If my brother comes back, send me a message immediately.”
“What are you planning to do?” Jiang Huaiyan asked, his face darkening with worry.
Zhou Yunqiu put a finger to his lips. “Shh. It’s a secret.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“Keep a good watch.”
Zhou Yunqiu crept upstairs and entered his brother’s collection room. There were many treasures inside, including one given to him by an Alpha when he was eighteen. He liked it very much, but his brother had confiscated it. He decided to take it back himself!
However, the moment he entered, he heard Zhou Yunqing’s voice through the surveillance speaker: “Is your skin itching for a lesson?”
Zhou Yunqiu: “…” Did his brother predict his every move?
“It’s not too late to leave now.”
“Brother, you’re being too much. That was my thing to begin with.”
“What’s yours is mine; aren’t those your own words?”
Zhou Yunqiu: “…”
“Arbitrary, overbearing, and unreasonable. You’ll never find an Omega like this.” Having said his piece, Zhou Yunqiu turned and left in a huff. He didn’t dare disobey his brother’s words.
Jiang Huaiyan watched him come down looking defeated and asked with a frown, “Young Master, what happened?”
“I was angered by that overbearing man.”
Jiang Huaiyan: “…”
“He made my chest hurt from anger. Rub it for me.”
“The Eldest Young Master will be home any minute.”
Zhou Yunqiu turned serious in a split second, sitting obediently on the sofa to wait for his brother. About ten minutes later, a car stopped at the entrance.
Dressed in a tailored suit, Zhou Yunqing walked in with an elegant stride. Seeing Zhou Yunqiu sitting so obediently on the sofa, he looked suspicious. “You’re being very well-behaved today.”
“Do you not want to see me being well-behaved?”
“Truth or a lie?” Zhou Yunqing took off his suit jacket and hung it up, then removed his expensive watch. “The truth is yes; the lie is no.”
Zhou Yunqiu made a gesture of spitting blood. “You sure are humorous.”
“Thank you for the compliment.”
“Eldest Young Master, should I come back later to pick up the Young Master?” Jiang Huaiyan felt the brothers might need private time; as a bodyguard, it felt inappropriate to stay.
“Don’t be in a hurry. Leave after dinner; I have some things to discuss with you.”
“Understood.”
“What things do you need to discuss?” Zhou Yunqiu leaned over the back of the sofa, looking at his brother curiously.
Zhou Yunqing walked upstairs with his long legs. “The matter of the attack the other night.”
Zhou Yunqiu quickly followed. “Oh! Is the investigation finished?”
“Yes.”
“Who was it?”
“Someone you don’t know an enemy of mine.” Zhou Yunqing took out a gift he had brought back from a business trip and handed it to him. “See if you like it.”
“Wow, Brother, you’re so good to me.” Zhou Yunqiu’s voice softened as he gave Zhou Yunqing a sweet hug.
Zhou Yunqing rubbed his head. “Consider it a reward for your clear-headedness. That engagement should have been canceled long ago.”
“Well, that’s why I came to ask you to help me call it off.”
“And what is the reason?” Zhou Yunqing knew his brother well. “Jiang Huaiyan?”
“A small part of it.”
“Zhou Yunqiu, he is a Beta. What you need is an Alpha.” Ever since Zhou Yunqiu was kidnapped two years ago, his glands had been damaged. He currently relied on medication to stay stable, but he couldn’t take those drugs for the rest of his life. He still needed an Alpha to stabilize the chaotic pheromones in his body.
“I don’t want an Alpha.”
“Do you not want your life either?” Zhou Yunqing could choose not to find a partner, but Zhou Yunqiu absolutely could not.
“Brother…”
“You’re entering your heat cycle again soon. This time, you’re staying here with me to get through it.” Zhou Yunqing was beginning to feel uneasy about Jiang Huaiyan.
