When A Commoner Carries The Child Of A Stranger Alpha - Chapter 5
Shen Buqi fed Mimi some compensation items sent by the communal canteen. Because the food was of a slightly lower quality, he didn’t give any to Ji Weishi.
He breathed a sigh of relief only after seeing Mimi lively and energetic again, rubbing against his arms after finishing the meal. He picked Mimi up, wanting to tell A-Shi that they could move house now.
However, the mechanical watch he carried began to beep incessantly; it was time for work.
He sighed, walking back while holding Mimi, whispering as he went, “Mimi, I picked up an Alpha. He’s just as cute as you. You two have to get along well, okay?”
Mimi let out two soft meows, “Meow-aoo~” rubbing its head against him relentlessly, licking Shen Buqi’s palm until it was a wet patch.
When he arrived home, the surroundings were terrifyingly quiet. The unkempt bushes seemed to have gone limp, and even the sound of the wind seemed to tiptoe past, holding up its hem.
Shen Buqi felt a vague sense of discomfort, though he couldn’t put his finger on what was wrong, his head just felt a dull, throbbing pain.
Did something happen to A-Shi?
Growing anxious, he tripped as he pushed the door open, falling straight into a cold, hard embrace.
Shen Buqi was already shorter than Ji Weishi, and since he was leaning forward, his fluffy head crashed directly into Ji Weishi’s chest. The sound of a powerful heartbeat entered his ears, so fast, so urgent.
Subconsciously, Shen Buqi hugged the person in front of him.
Then, that heartbeat grew even more rapid.
The dull pain in his head vanished. Even the air seemed a few degrees less choking than usual.
The moment Ji Weishi caught the Beta, his heart was still simmering with a bit of anger. He naturally disliked contact with others.
Ever since his talent was measured, his family had bestowed upon him the title of “Light of Humanity.” He was forced to constantly carry out missions for the Alliance, inevitably coming into contact with things he’d rather not.
Today, the moment he touched Shen Buqi, his first instinct was to let go immediately, after all, his mental power spike was caused by this very person.
But after touching him, he endured it and refrained from pushing him away. He comforted himself, thinking he only wanted to figure out what that scent on the man’s body was, yet his body moved first, tightly embracing that soft bundle.
Betas were not like Omegas, who were soft and weak; the moment Shen Buqi’s waist pressed against him, Ji Weishi could feel a strong impact.
Yet, a Beta was also not like an Alpha, hard all over and foul-smelling. Aside from that flickering, strange scent, Shen Buqi carried a faint smell of his own, like sun-drenched green grass with a bitter undertone at the finish.
That scent made his heart race, it was more intoxicating than any actual pheromone. Because it was subtle enough, like Cinderella’s glass slipper, a single one was enough to lure a person forward.
Tsk, this smells much better than some S-class Omega’s pheromones, Ji Weishi thought, not letting go for a moment.
It was Shen Buqi who let go first. The calico cat had nimbly jumped away the moment he was about to fall; fearing that the Mimi he had worked so hard to find would leave again, he released his hold to catch the cat.
Ji Weishi’s mental power, which had just relaxed slightly, flared out again. A bewildered smile remained on his face, but his heart was as cold as dross. The interaction had even prodded his rut, threatening to flare up.
But just as his gland began to stir, that lotus fragrance immediately wrapped around him. Moreover, this time it was quite persistent, refusing to dissipate for a long time.
Shen Buqi, naturally, sensed none of this. He knelt down, focused on petting and comforting his restless cat.
Finally, Ji Weishi couldn’t even maintain his smile. His eyes were cold enough to freeze. He silently watched the almost heartwarming scene before him, his nails nearly digging into his palms.
He didn’t know what was wrong with him. It was likely the influence of those damn pheromones; his emotions were uncontrollably tethered to this Beta.
After calming the agitated Mimi, Shen Buqi stood up, turned around, and asked Ji Weishi with a hint of longing, “A-Shi, I have to go to work. Can you help me look after Mimi?”
Ji Weishi nodded with a smile and reached out to take the cat. Mimi, however, didn’t appreciate the gesture, it bared its teeth and gave him a swift “smack” with its claws.
Blood was drawn instantly.
Shen Buqi had already been heading out, but at this sudden turn of events, he instinctively grabbed Ji Weishi’s hand. Mimi froze for a moment and then began to meow incessantly.
Ji Weishi’s eyes looked as though they were wounded and about to bleed, red-rimmed, holding back tears that refused to fall.
Shen Buqi was frantic with worry, but there was no medicine at home. He had suffered many injuries himself, but he had never used such precious things.
His Alpha was different.
Whether it was a cold wind, heavy rain, or even a tiny insect, any of it could cause a rose to wither. The person cultivating a rose had much to consider, temperature, humidity, fertilizer, and most importantly, protection.
Shen Buqi felt he wasn’t worthy of raising this rose. He had repeatedly allowed his Alpha to get hurt in front of him while being powerless to stop it. And his rose often looked at him with tearful eyes.
Still so refined, even when hurt, the rose would hold its petals high, with only the stamen weeping fragile dew.
If Ji Weishi knew Shen Buqi’s self-reproachful thoughts, he would probably laugh out loud. Since the global unified genetic testing at age thirteen, no one had ever thought of him as “fragile.”
This wasn’t just because he was an S-class Alpha, on the contrary, there were quite a few S-class Alpha genes detected back then. But only he was called the “Light of Humanity” because he possessed not only the physical capabilities of an S-class Alpha but also the highest level of mental power ever recorded in the Alliance.
After the apocalypse began, in order to enhance individual combat power, humans developed various mechs. Among them, fully automated mechs became the most promising and became the narrow definition of “mech” later on.
Fully automated mechs possess their own consciousness and are relatively simple to operate but place higher demands on the pilot. One must have strong mental control to remain rational while operating an omnidirectional mech and not be overwhelmed by its feedback.
This control is Mental Power.
In the century of exploration that followed, people discovered that mental power isn’t just manifested when syncing with a mech. With training, it can also influence surrounding objects. While not as direct as physical combat, when physical capabilities are similar, the contest of mental power becomes the deciding factor between victory and defeat.
Thus, Ji Weishi became the Alliance’s number one in close combat and its best mech pilot.
However, strangely enough, his mental power fluctuated wildly with the onset of his rut, often emitting uncontrollably. The cat’s fear was caused by this, leading it to scratch him out of instinct.
Yet, as he watched Shen Buqi’s retreating back, his gaze darkened. This Beta was completely unaffected.
Shen Buqi didn’t notice Ji Weishi’s burning gaze that seemed almost predatory. He simply called his boss to ask for leave.
The boss was as lazy as ever, only offering a reminder:
“Whatever. But I’m warning you that Alpha you picked up, if he’s not from District 7, you’d better hide him well. People from other districts have arrived, and it seems they’re looking for an Alpha.”
He paused, then added:
“If you don’t want to let him go, you’d better lock him up tight.”
