When A Commoner Carries The Child Of A Stranger Alpha - Chapter 4
Shen Buqi felt that his Alpha was truly like a rose, from a distance, he was covered in thorns, possessing an over the top nobility.
But up close, he was a creature forced to bow his head to the torrential rain for survival, shaking off his petals while treating others with gentleness.
Shen Buqi set the dishes on the floor and said in a low voice, “It’s alright. Just make do with this for now; we’ll move as soon as you’re finished eating.”
On his way to work that morning, he had already scouted the surrounding area and purchased a suitable house.
In truth, District 7 lacked many things, but space wasn’t one of them. Finding a place to live was much easier than finding a decent meal.
Still, Shen Buqi had put in considerable effort because he was far too fastidious. The rooms had to be large enough, there had to be a courtyard, green plants, a pleasant fragrance, and plenty of space and light.
These requirements were practically unheard of in District 7.
But his Alpha deserved only the best.
Thinking of that beautiful house, reminiscent of the manor he had once seen where beautiful roses were cultivated, he looked at Ji Minghui and suddenly began to smile for no apparent reason.
His Alpha, his rose, would surely love it there.
Even though Ji Minghui had encountered many lunatics in his time, he couldn’t help but frown at Shen Buqi’s abnormal state.
The expression vanished instantly, however, as he gently caught Shen Buqi’s wrist. “Is there any medicine?”
Startled by the scorching heat of the palm, Shen Buqi subconsciously shook his head. “I’m not hurt.”
After a pause, he added, “Someone else cut their hand while chopping vegetables and got some on me.”
As he spoke, he nonchalantly wiped his hand on his clothes a few times. Because he repaired mechas, he rotated through the same few dark-colored outfits every day; a little blood on them didn’t show at all.
Watching his small movements, Ji Minghui gave a mental click of his tongue. He didn’t bother asking further. He glanced at the dishes, they were alright, barely palatable.
He stuffed a few bites into his mouth at random. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Shen Buqi busy preparing for the move, his dark eyes looking downward as if he were troubled.
Ji Minghui set down his chopsticks, adjusted his collar, and let his slender fingers brush against the gland on the back of his neck.
What a pity. It seemed his rut truly wasn’t going to disappear.
It looked like this Beta was still useful.
With that thought, he stood up, his face full of tenderness. “Xiao Yi, what’s wrong?”
He was young, and his voice still held a clear, youthful quality. Usually, he kept himself guarded, making him sound overly cold. Now that he was acting tender, his voice carried a hint of drowning affection.
Shen Buqi thought his Alpha’s voice was so beautiful.
Yes, Mimi’s meows were also clingy and beautiful.
But why wasn’t Mimi back yet? Usually, even if the cat didn’t come home for a night, it would return the next day.
This was exactly what was bothering him. As he packed his things just now, everything was accounted for except Mimi.
Aside from Ah Shi, he loved Mimi the most.
Shen Buqi shook his head. “I have a cat, but I can’t find it now.”
Ji Minghui comforted him, “I see. It probably just got lost. Don’t be too sad. I’ve heard people say that cats don’t really recognize their homes. It’s likely just off playing somewhere.”
He even made a move to go out and help Shen Buqi look. Shen Buqi hurried to stop him. “Don’t go. We’ll move tonight instead. You finish eating first.”
Ji Minghui put on a helpless expression and sat back down, but internally he thought irritably: Tsk, no principles at all? Delaying the move just for a cat.
In fact, he had seen the cat that morning. It was a calico with patches of yellow and black, frightfully ugly, with an annoying meow that grated on the nerves.
Coincidentally, his rut had reached a minor peak. Annoyed, he had released a bit of mental pressure to intimidate it. The cat couldn’t handle it and had fled with its tail between its legs.
So, the Beta owned that cat. They were both equally annoying.
However, the Beta was slightly better than the cat, at least he was easier on the eyes.
Shen Buqi had no idea of the “good” deed Ji Minghui had done and felt quite anxious.
Mimi was so small. If the cat didn’t come back to take its medicine and stayed out in the acid rain for too long, it would definitely get sick.
And if they moved and Mimi couldn’t find him, wouldn’t the cat feel terrible, thinking it had been abandoned?
Frowning, he silently set the household items back on the ground.
As he bent over, the edge of a nutrient solution pack peeked out of his pocket.
Ji Minghui’s eyes darkened. This Beta was truly interesting. He ate nutrient solution himself, yet he bought high-quality food for a stranger he had picked up off the street only yesterday.
Either he had an ulterior motive, or he was a believer in that idiotic Church of Light.
A believer of the Church of Light shouldn’t be able to survive in District 7. In that case… had this person recognized him?
Was the nutrient solution pack also “accidentally” exposed on purpose? Was it all just to build rapport so he could ask for favors later?
What a shame. Whatever the motive, this poor Beta had vastly overestimated his sense of morality.
He, Ji Minghui, was not some “good person” who repaid kindness with gratitude.
But since a performance was being put on, and the man had gone to such lengths just to see how he’d react… why not play along?
Ji Minghui gave a startled cry, “Are you eating nutrient solution?”
Shen Buqi, who had just finished setting down the luggage and was about to go look for Mimi, was stopped in his tracks by the shout. He nodded blankly. Seeing the tears welling in Ji Minghui’s eyes, he hurriedly said:
“Don’t cry. It doesn’t matter what I eat, really. I’m fine.”
He was telling the truth. To him, these things all tasted about the same. In terms of efficiency, those vegetables were probably less filling and convenient than the nutrient solution.
Ji Minghui sneered internally: All the same? Then why go through the trouble of putting on a show for me?
In his rut, he didn’t have much patience. He was about to say something when he suddenly smelled that faint fragrance again.
It was like a summer breeze, soothing the irritability in his heart and the pain in his body, bringing with it traces of a scent similar to lotus blossoms.
This smell… having experienced it before, he took the opportunity to sniff carefully, but the more he smelled, the more confused he became.
How could this be? Why was the scent so similar to the pheromones of that one and only S-class Omega?
He wanted to ask Shen Buqi what was going on, but a strange thought inexplicably surfaced in his mind:
He treats you so well, why do you still suspect him?
Something was very wrong. Ji Minghui hated this feeling of his physiology controlling his spirit. He struggled with the urge to kill Shen Buqi right now to eliminate any future trouble.
The two impulses wavered back and forth, clashing with each other.
Shen Buqi broke the eerie silence by speaking: “Ah Shi, I’m going to work now. Wait for me at home and be good.”
Ji Minghui smiled and said he would.
Once Shen Buqi had been gone for a while, Ji Minghui concealed his presence and followed him, intent on investigating the source of that flickering scent.
As he followed, his confusion grew.
District 7 had no sun and was constantly plagued by acid rain, so the air was naturally humid. Generally, however, people tried to find areas that weren’t quite so damp for their activities.
Yet the path Shen Buqi took became increasingly narrow, slick with moisture, and dark.
After a long while, Shen Buqi suddenly stopped. Ji Minghui, following at a discreet distance, quickly found a place to hide nearby.
This time, he saw it clearly, that dirty, ugly cat was meowing incessantly, eating the same vegetables he had eaten and rubbing against Shen Buqi.
Perhaps it was because that strange scent acted like pheromones and disrupted his emotions, but Ji Minghui felt a rare, unprecedented sense of grievance.
But mostly, he sneered, thinking to himself:
Fine. Splendid. You made me stay in that dilapidated shack for an extra afternoon all for the sake of a dead cat.
It was as if he were the one who had suffered some great injustice.
