- Chapter 23 - I Love Sister the Most in the Whole World
Looking over, the first thing one saw was Shu Mengli’s sleeping face as she drifted into dreamland.
After working overtime for so long during the day, she had reached her limit shortly after providing gentle comfort to her little darling. She hadn’t been able to respond to Jiang Weilu’s final words. Her head rested softly against the pillow, her eyes closed, and her long eyelashes fluttered slightly like tiny brushes. She held Jiang Weilu loosely, already deep in slumber.
Nestled in her sister’s arms, Jiang Weilu caught sight of this scene and couldn’t help but let out a soft giggle. Fearing she might wake the sleeping “little spirit,” she quickly suppressed the smile, but her gaze lingered uncontrollably on the face so close to her own, taking it in bit by bit.
From the full, smooth forehead to the exquisite eyes and brows, then across the small, elegant nose to the crimson, full lips she looked with immense care, unwilling to miss a single detail, as if trying to carve the other’s appearance into her soul.
Jiang Weilu stared at Shu Mengli without blinking, even feeling that sleeping at a time like this was a waste. Her heart surged with wave after wave of emotion; unable to contain her excitement, she hugged Shu Mengli’s waist and burrowed into her neck, nuzzling gently.
This was her guardian angel. A sister who belonged to her alone, one-of-a-kind.
But a child is still a child. Although Jiang Weilu was now eleven, she was still young. Even if she was loath to sleep, her biological clock was fixed; once the hour hit, she became incredibly drowsy. Moreover, with Shu Mengli having crossed the mirror to be by her side, Jiang Weilu felt a sense of happiness and stability after the emotional rollercoaster. Before long, she fell fast asleep in her sister’s arms.
The sweet dream lasted until the middle of the night.
It was now the early hours of the morning. Moonlight shone through the window, bathing the room in a gentle glow and making the night feel tranquil and soft. Suddenly, Jiang Weilu’s eyes snapped open.
Her eyes looked up at the ceiling in the darkness, a bit dazed at first, but she became fully awake in the next instant. The person sleeping next to her had just kicked out, a direct hit that made it impossible for Jiang Weilu to stay asleep.
And it got even worse. After the kick, the person didn’t settle down; a slender, soft arm reached over, locking Jiang Weilu in a tight embrace. A long leg was then possessively hooked over the child’s waist. Like an octopus, the person held Jiang Weilu in a death grip.
After such a commotion, Jiang Weilu was completely awake. She looked at her “Guardian Angel Miss,” whose sleeping posture was nothing short of atrocious, with a mix of amusement and helplessness. A giant exclamation mark popped up in her head.
! I really didn’t expect it—Sister’s sleeping posture is too cute!
The child gazed at the sleeping Shu Mengli in the moonlight, her eyes overflowing with a love and tenderness that was almost impossible to contain. Then, within her sister’s locked embrace, she carefully and delicately raised a hand.
She slowly pulled the soft quilt, which had slipped to Shu Mengli’s waist, up to her shoulders, her movements incredibly light. Although it was early spring, the nights were still chilly; it wouldn’t do for Sister to catch a cold.
She had been as quiet as possible for fear of waking her, but even so, the sleeping person gave a sharp, sensitive frown. Shu Mengli mumbled a few childish, incoherent words, then unhappily kicked the quilt away, released her grip on Jiang Weilu, and rolled over to sleep on the other side.
As she turned, the situation became clear: Jiang Weilu’s large double bed was now two-thirds occupied by the Guardian Angel Miss with the terrible sleeping posture. The poor owner of the bed, little Jiang Weilu, was left sleeping on a tiny sliver of a corner, occasionally being used as a body pillow or even being kicked a few times.
Yet Jiang Weilu felt no resentment. Quite the opposite—she felt a pang of regret when she saw her sister turn her back. Her eyes followed Shu Mengli’s silhouette in the moonlight with a look of longing. Her mouth curved downward, looking like a piteous little thing abandoned by her sister.
Finally unable to help herself, Jiang Weilu crept closer to Shu Mengli, like a cautious little hamster, sleeping pressed tight against her sister. She just wanted to be near her—closer, and closer still.
But then, to her immense joy, the person who had just turned her back rolled over again. With unerring accuracy, she found Jiang Weilu and pulled her into an octopus-like embrace.
Startled by the sudden hug, Jiang Weilu’s eyes instantly filled with delight. Her heart bloomed with brilliant flowers as she burrowed into Shu Mengli’s arms and hugged her waist. She thought to herself: Sister is just too cute!
Outside, the night was misty and the stars twinkled faintly. The moon had just climbed above the treetops, gently illuminating the earth. The breeze blew softly; the night was still long.
The next morning.
Warm sunlight shone into the room, casting a layer of pale gold on the floor. The air was filled with the romantic scent of spring.
Shu Mengli lay on the bed, her long eyelashes fluttering like butterflies about to take flight. Then, her eyelids slowly lifted as she finally woke up. She sat up with slightly messy hair, her eyes still misty. The room was silent and empty. The unfamiliar bedroom scene rushed into her sight, making her a bit dazed.
After two seconds, she recalled that she had traveled to Lulu’s world yesterday and was currently in the child’s room. Just then—
Click. A soft sound came from the door. The bedroom door was opened from the outside. The owner of the room walked in, carefully carrying two sets of steaming breakfast. She smiled the moment she saw Shu Mengli sitting on the bed.
“Sister, you’re awake! Are you hungry? Go wash up and come have breakfast.”
Shu Mengli was stunned for a moment before covering her face in embarrassment. What a sin! She had wondered why she didn’t see Lulu when she woke up; it turned out the girl had been awake far longer and had even gone to prepare breakfast.
Shu Mengli, you’re twenty-eight! You’re actually being taken care of by an elementary school student!
She hurriedly looked up, giving a few incoherent answers as she avoided Jiang Weilu’s gaze. “Ah, mhm.”
When she entered the bathroom, she was shocked once again by Jiang Weilu’s thoughtfulness. Looking at the basket of toiletries arranged perfectly on the counter, she couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. Is the child an angel?
Not only were there daily essentials like a toothbrush and towel, but even a small eyebrow razor was prepared! She was incredibly meticulous; there was everything she could possibly need.
Shu Mengli laughed softly. Since becoming an independent adult, she had always been the one taking care of others. She hadn’t expected that after traveling to a child’s side, she would be cared for so thoroughly.
Soon, she emerged from the bathroom, neatly groomed. The moment she opened the door, she saw Jiang Weilu sitting obediently at the table, her large eyes fixed on the bathroom door without blinking. In that instant, Shu Mengli recalled the little golden retriever she once had at home. When she used to come home from school, it would squat at the door just like this, waiting for her with its “dog-like” eyes.
The comparison made her burst out laughing. “Lulu, were you waiting for me? Why didn’t you start eating?”
Jiang Weilu’s face immediately lit up with a sweet smile, and she shook her head. “I wanted to eat with Sister.”
The well-behaved, soft answer pierced Shu Mengli’s heart—not to mention the little darling opposite her was smiling with enough sweetness to cause a sugar overdose. Shu Mengli couldn’t resist; she walked over and ruffled the child’s head.
She had wanted to do this ever since she was stuck in the mirror space! Now she could finally “rua” the child to her heart’s content! The texture is so good. Lulu is so cute!
Jiang Weilu didn’t dodge. She lowered her head and let her sister mess up her hair, her eyes crinkling. She even nuzzled into her sister’s palm. Thus, breakfast proceeded in a wonderful atmosphere, with Jiang Weilu’s smile never fading.
However, after they finished breakfast and Jiang Weilu had personally returned the dishes, things took a turn. When she re-entered the room, she happened to be facing the light. The golden glow illuminated her face, making the fine fuzz on her cheeks visible and highlighting her resemblance to an elegant porcelain doll.
But it also clearly highlighted the slight dark circles under her eyes. Shu Mengli frowned, then suddenly remembered something and let out an annoyed “tsk.”
With her sleeping posture, how could Lulu possibly have rested well in the same bed? She looked at the approaching Jiang Weilu with concern. “Lulu, did you not sleep well with me last night? Is my sleeping posture too bad?”
Forgive her as a single woman of a certain age, she rarely had the chance to share a bed! The last time was during the New Year when her rambunctious niece insisted on sleeping with her. Two people with terrible sleeping habits had ended up together; when they woke up the next morning, neither the quilts nor the pillows could be found. When Shu’s mother walked in and saw the mess, she just shook her head. If you didn’t know people had been in that bed, you’d think two millstones had been grinding there.
Recalling this, Shu Mengli felt both ashamed and guilty. But Jiang Weilu didn’t care at all. She didn’t see it as a flaw; she even thought it was cute. She hadn’t expected the usually gentle and elegant Guardian Angel Miss to be so “moe” while sleeping! The thought excited her; it felt as if she had peeled back a layer of packaging to see the real person underneath, bringing her closer to her dear sister.
Yet, she couldn’t help but want to get even closer. Jiang Weilu shook her head with a smile. “It’s okay, Sister. I think Sister is very cute like that.”
The words didn’t comfort Shu Mengli. Instead, she felt the child was just humoring her, making her feel even more guilty. “How is that cute? As for you, Lulu, do you want to go back to sleep for a bit?”
She didn’t want to! Her sister had finally returned and even crossed over to be by her side. How could she waste time sleeping? Sleeping was such a waste! Jiang Weilu shook her head like a rattle, about to refuse.
But then, she heard Shu Mengli’s gentle concern. “If you’re worried about not being able to fall asleep, do you want to try lying on my lap? It might be easier.”
Shu Mengli thought this was a good idea. Back when her niece refused to sleep, this was how she had coaxed her. It worked wonders. A few gentle words, and the child would fall asleep obediently. Though Lulu was far more steady than her niece, there was only a three-year age difference; the method should work.
Jiang Weilu’s shaking head stopped abruptly. She became so stiff she almost forgot how to move. Her breathing hitched, and fireworks seemed to go off in her heart; the whole world became even more brilliant. She nodded vigorously. “Okay!”
It was early spring. Everything was reviving, and the air was filled with a sense of liveliness. For the sake of air quality, Jiang Weilu had opened the window in the morning to air out the room. The spring breeze blew in, stirring the light gauze curtains and making them dance a dreamy and beautiful sight.
Following the hem of the swaying curtains, one could see the two of them on the bed. Shu Mengli leaned against the headboard with a soft pillow behind her, her long, slender, and fair legs resting on the snowy-white sheets. And Jiang Weilu was lying quietly on her sister’s lap.
She rested her head lightly, not daring to use too much force for fear of hurting her sister. Her black hair fell behind her, and her cheek was pressed against Shu Mengli’s thigh, feeling the unique softness and warmth of that person. Although she was lying across her clothes, the proximity was almost overwhelming. No one had ever coaxed her to sleep so gently.
The tips of her ears turned red, and soon even her face was burning hot. For a moment, Jiang Weilu couldn’t tell if her sister was too warm or if she had a fever. As she drifted in her daze, she felt her sister’s warm palm gently stroking her hair. The hand seemed to hold magical power; wherever it passed was warm and tingly, making her lose herself in the sensation. Her mind went blank, leaving only a longing for that gentle touch.
Then, the hands moved down, lightly patting her back. The soft touch on her spine sent a tingle straight to her heart. In this moment, Jiang Weilu felt as if she were on a romantic moon-boat, drifting far away. Her consciousness grew increasingly hazy, but she fought the drowsiness to clutch her sister’s clothes and whisper her truth:
“I love Sister the most. The most in the whole world.”
Then, in her half-dream, she heard her favorite person respond gently: “Good girl. I love Lulu, too.”
If days continued with such warmth, Jiang Weilu would surely love life even more. But unfortunately, they didn’t. After the warm weekend came Monday. As an elementary school student, Jiang Weilu could not escape her fate of going to school. This meant she couldn’t stay glued to her sister all day.
Jiang Weilu felt she had never hated going to class so much—not even when she was being bullied by Jiang Yuxi! But she would always be the innocent, pure “little darling” in front of her sister, so she could only keep her unhappiness to herself.
However, a problem arose. After crossing through the mirror, Shu Mengli was essentially a human—it was just that no one else could see her. This meant she wasn’t as easy to carry as a small mirror. If she followed Lulu everywhere, it might not be convenient. If she accidentally bumped into someone on the road, they’d probably think they’d seen a ghost.
But Shu Mengli didn’t know if she could return to the mirror space after coming out, or if she could come back out again if she did go back. More importantly, Jiang Weilu couldn’t bear for her to return to the mirror, nor did she feel comfortable leaving her sister alone at home. After discussing it, Shu Mengli decided to follow Jiang Weilu everywhere and go to school with her.
As she stepped out of the bedroom, Shu Mengli looked left and right, finding everything miraculous. Before, she had always watched from the mirror; now, she was in actual contact with Lulu’s world. She followed Jiang Weilu, who was carrying her small backpack downstairs, silently observing the place where the child had lived for eleven years.
Her only thought was: Rich! Too rich!
Although the style of the Little Jiang Residence was from over a decade ago, it didn’t look dated to Shu Mengli’s eyes. After all, everything she saw screamed “money.” She let out a soft tsk; that set of redwood furniture probably cost millions. She looked up—why did even the chandelier have to be inlaid with diamonds! She had always thought she was quite a “little rich woman,” but in comparison, she was just a drop in the ocean. It seemed her Lulu was the real future heiress!
Her thoughts raced. By now, she had followed Jiang Weilu downstairs to the hall. In the morning, the hall was somewhat empty, with only the cleaning staff busy at work. She didn’t see the legendary Jiang Ming or Liu Yi. But as she glanced toward the main gate, her brow furrowed.
She saw Jiang Yuxi. Because of the previous incident where Lulu almost had her mirror stolen, Shu Mengli knew the two girls took the same car to school. So, how were they going to sit? Would Jiang Yuxi notice if she squeezed in? She certainly couldn’t run after the car!
Shu Mengli knit her brows and pondered for a moment before making a decision. Relying on the fact that she was invisible and no one could hear her, she spoke directly to Jiang Weilu: “Lulu, you go in first. Close the door slowly and leave a spot for me to squeeze in.”
But Jiang Weilu couldn’t bear to let her sister be “squeezed.” Her brow furrowed as she looked at Jiang Yuxi, who was already in the car. Seeing that no one was paying attention, she whispered back: “It’s okay, Sister. Leave it to me. Wait for me in the hall for a second.”
With that, Jiang Weilu carried her backpack and walked straight to the car parked at the door. She pulled the door open, but didn’t get in. Instead, she leaned down to look at Jiang Yuxi inside. Her eyes no longer held the “cute” look she used for Shu Mengli; instead, they were cold as ice. She said in a level voice:
“Get out.”
Jiang Yuxi had only just sat down, and her seat wasn’t even warm yet, when she saw Jiang Weilu pull open the door and start cursing at her. She didn’t react at first, looking back in bewilderment. The palm print from Jiang Weilu’s slap was still slightly swollen on her face, making her look quite ridiculous. “Huh? What did you say?”
Jiang Weilu arched an eyebrow, her eyes showing a trace of impatience. “I don’t want to share a car with you. Get out.”
Now Jiang Yuxi understood completely, and her anger flared up. “Jiang Weilu, I’m warning you, don’t be too”
“Do you want me to throw you out right here, or will you crawl out yourself?” The cold voice cut her off. Jiang Weilu’s face was expressionless.
Seeing the look in her eyes as she looked down at her, Jiang Yuxi felt her hair stand on end. The words of resistance she wanted to say died in her throat. Finally, she bit her teeth and left a cowardly parting shot: “You just wait!” Then she scrambled out of the car.
Standing in the hall, Shu Mengli couldn’t hear what the two were saying because they were too far away. She only saw Jiang Weilu lean in and say a few words, and then Jiang Yuxi got out on her own. The scene made Shu Mengli quite curious. Just then, Jiang Weilu ran back with her backpack. When she reached her sister, she smiled innocently and said in a “milky” voice:
“Sister, I just had a word with Jiang Yuxi. She agreed to take another car to school.”
Hm? Shu Mengli frowned slightly. With a personality like Jiang Yuxi’s, how could she agree so easily? Had Lulu been blackmailed for something? Shu Mengli couldn’t help but worry. “Lulu, what did you say to her?”
Jiang Weilu’s smile was brilliant. “Oh, we just… had a friendly exchange.”
A moment later, when the two of them walked to the car, Jiang Yuxi was still standing there with a dark expression. Jiang Weilu thoughtfully opened the car door for her sister and let Shu Mengli enter first, taking the opportunity to block Jiang Yuxi’s view so her sister wouldn’t have to see that ugly face. Then, while Shu Mengli wasn’t looking, she shot Jiang Yuxi an icy glare. Jiang Yuxi froze, bit her teeth, and let out a huff before walking away.
Satisfied, Jiang Weilu got into the car. The engine started, and the scenery outside gradually receded as they drove away from the Little Jiang Residence. The small car was silent for a moment. Because of the driver, Jiang Weilu didn’t speak to Shu Mengli. But she couldn’t resist wanting to be near her; she gently shifted her bottom, inching closer bit by bit until her knee touched Shu Mengli’s. Only then did she stop, satisfied.
Shu Mengli, who had been watching the scenery outside with curiosity, noticed the child’s stealthy approach and couldn’t help but narrow her eyes in a soft smile. Then, she caught Jiang Weilu’s hand, clasping it in her palm and resting it on her lap. She smiled tenderly at her.
A warm and soft sensation enveloped her palm. Seeing her hand held by her sister, Jiang Weilu was instantly filled with joy. She immediately returned a huge smile. She even felt that the scenery she had grown tired of seeing every day had become beautiful. Because of that person’s presence, she looked forward to the journey ahead.
