- Chapter 13 - Being a Cute Little Pixie is Enough
The young child was startled by the old butler’s sudden movement. She took a microscopic step back, her hand instinctively rising to clutch the small mirror at her chest.
In this world, aside from her sister, this was the first time she had felt the kindness of another person. For a moment, she didn’t know how to react. Once she regained her composure and settled herself, she rubbed her nose and spoke in a muffled voice: “No need for thanks.”
The old butler watched the child’s reaction and chuckled softly, his aged wrinkles crinkling into a thin line. He had no children of his own and had been alone his entire life; even in his old age, he remained solitary in this old villa, nursing his pains in isolation.
But watching the child before him tonight, he suddenly understood why, over the years, Elder Jiang had become increasingly desperate to feel the warmth of family. Having a thoughtful little granddaughter seemed like a truly wonderful thing. It felt as though even this year’s winter wasn’t quite so cold anymore.
Jiang Weilu was still a bit dazed when she walked out of the butler’s room, pacing silently down the hallway with her head down. Detecting her unusual emotional state, the small mirror at her chest emitted a gentle laugh.
“How was it? Doesn’t the feeling of helping others feel pretty good?”
Startled by Shu Mengli’s voice, Jiang Weilu stopped in her tracks and pursed her lips. “That is only because Sister taught me well.”
She was no fool; on the contrary, she was very bright. From the old butler’s excited expression, she could easily discern the immense value of the massage technique her sister had taught her. Yet, her sister had said nothing of its worth and handed it over so easily—all just to let Weilu experience the warmth of human connection and to help her earn a favor.
Jiang Weilu rubbed her eyes and gently stroked the small mirror, whispering to herself, “Only Sister is the best.”
But…
“Alright, I admit, the old butler seems okay too. Helping others occasionally isn’t so bad after all.”
The next day, it snowed heavily. The weather was just as the butler had predicted in the flower room yesterday frightfully cold and gloomy. Snowflakes fell like fluttering feathers, quickly blanketing the world in a pure, simple white. Consequently, Jiang Weilu had to postpone her morning exercise routine until the weather cleared.
Fortunately, the heavy snow didn’t last long. The skies cleared on the second day, and a lazy sun crawled out from behind the clouds, wrapped in light that held no warmth and couldn’t melt a single flake on the ground. Jiang Weilu did not slack off, however; she still woke up early to exercise.
Yet, just as she stepped out of the villa doors, she ran into someone unexpected.
The old butler looked at her with a beaming smile. “Is the Eldest Miss going out to exercise again?”
Jiang Weilu gave him a polite, fake smile and nodded. “Yes.”
She couldn’t be blamed for her confusion; in the past, whenever she went out, the butler never concerned himself with her, offering at most a few words of caution regarding her safety. Today, he had unexpectedly followed her out.
The old man strolled leisurely behind Jiang Weilu, shaking his head as he observed her small frame. “The Eldest Miss is too thin.”
Unexpectedly, these light words were like stepping on a cat’s tail, causing Jiang Weilu to bristle instantly. In the child’s subconscious, being “thin” translated to not looking good. Panic flared in her heart. What if Sister dislikes me because I’m ugly? Old butler, don’t talk nonsense!
She immediately turned around to argue, looking like a little hedgehog with its quills out. “That’s not true! I eat a lot of meat!”
The butler was moved to laughter by her reaction. “No, no, no, that is far from enough. Eldest Miss, do you believe that with a frame like yours, I could knock you over with a single finger?”
Jiang Weilu felt insulted. She turned to eye the little old man, the meaning in her gaze clear: You?
The butler had lived many years, but this was the first time his prowess had been questioned. He burst into a loud laugh. “Eldest Miss, don’t look at me as I am now. I served as your grandfather’s bodyguard for a lifetime and saved his life three times.”
Inside the mirror space, Shu Mengli’s “radar” snapped to attention, her eyes widening. Holy cow! I knew this butler wasn’t simple! At the time, she only thought he might have some hidden skills, but she hadn’t expected him to be even more impressive than she imagined. To be a lifelong bodyguard for someone of Elder Jiang’s status… one didn’t even need to think to know the butler’s skills were extraordinary.
Shu Mengli became inexplicably excited in the mirror space, feeling as though she had encountered a “Hidden Monk” from a martial arts novel. Not to mention, this “monk” clearly had an exceptionally close relationship with the head of the Jiang family. Luolu had truly helped the right person!
Moreover, they had just helped the butler yesterday, and today he was intercepting them at the gate. The intention was self-evident.
Sure enough, a moment later, Shu Mengli heard the butler’s chuckling voice through the water screen. “So, if the Eldest Miss doesn’t mind, would you like to learn some methods for strengthening the body and self-defense from this old man?”
Grandpa, you are too modest! If I weren’t already twenty-eight, I’d want to learn too! Shu Mengli paced excitedly in the mirror space. Only a fool would refuse!
However, in the next second, her little fool’s arrogant huff came through the screen. “I don’t want”
Shu Mengli grimaced and reached out to frantically rap on the water screen. Child, what are you thinking?!
Fortunately, Jiang Weilu received Shu Mengli’s hint. She had always been an obedient child in front of her sister. She reached out to touch the mirror at her chest and pouted with slight displeasure. Ultimately, she nodded in agreement, her tone a bit forced.
“Fine then.”
Reality was not far from what Shu Mengli had imagined. As a former ace bodyguard for Elder Jiang, how could the butler be ordinary? Furthermore, little Jiang Weilu was both intelligent and hardworking. After being together for a month, her progress was nothing short of rapid.
Watching the child’s transformation from inside the mirror, Shu Mengli thought that if Jiang Ming ever came back with a stick to hit someone, it was uncertain who would end up being the one beaten.
Shu Mengli wasn’t without envy. She had secretly tried to learn a move or two for self-defense. But her giving up came as fast as a tornado; after trying to mimic Jiang Weilu’s horse stance for two minutes, she collapsed onto the ground in a heap. Forget it, being a salted fish is perfectly fine.
Unexpectedly, just as Jiang Weilu finished her training, she missed her sister so much that she took out the small mirror while the butler was away. The child’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes froze for a moment, and she stared blankly.
Her gaze didn’t blink for a second as she watched the young woman in the mirror wearing strawberry pajamas, rolling around on the floor. Her heart was instantly struck by the sheer cuteness of the sight. She finally couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Sister, what are you doing?”
Shu Mengli stopped abruptly, as if someone had pressed the pause button. With her backside to the mirror, she stiffly and slowly curled her body into a ball and covered her face, looking like a little hamster.
Oh my god! This is so embarrassing! Why did Luolu catch me right at this moment? She had been acting way too childish and not at all like an adult.
Jiang Weilu didn’t think her sister’s actions were childish at all. Her large eyes sparkled, unable to look away from the person in the mirror. “Sister, why aren’t you talking to me?”
Shu Mengli was too embarrassed to show her face, but she felt it would be rude to keep ignoring the child. So, keeping her back to the water screen and her face covered, she spoke in a muffled voice.
“Because I wanted to learn too…” I want to become strong too, boohoo. If she were strong, the next time Hao Wei dared to approach her, she could throw her out with one hand. But this “big sister” was such a weakling that she couldn’t even compare to a ten-year-old.
“Pfft.” Jiang Weilu couldn’t hold it back any longer and burst into laughter. Realizing her sister might be embarrassed, she immediately went silent, working hard to suppress her curling lips. But the overflowing joy leaked out of her eyes anyway, making them shine like a sea of stars.
The ten-year-old leaned closer to the mirror, coaxing her sister in a soft, gentle tone. “Then why did Sister want to learn this?”
Shu Mengli kept her head down. “Maybe it would come in handy one day.” So what if I’m stuck in a mirror, can’t I learn? I’m so annoyed when will this pixie finally stand up!
The guardian angel’s frustration in the mirror was so thick it nearly overflowed the screen. Jiang Weilu felt it clearly, yet she continued to smile. Then, she spoke in a voice more tender and adorable than ever before, yet her eyes were incredibly serious.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It doesn’t matter even if Sister can’t learn it. It doesn’t matter if you learn it and never use it. It’s enough that I know it. I will do the hard work, and from now on, I will be the one to protect Sister.”
After saying this, Jiang Weilu tilted her head slightly, her peach-blossom eyes crinkling into a brilliant smile. “After all, being a cute little pixie is enough.”
Whoosh.
A flower bloomed in Shu Mengli’s heart. It was pink and tender, swaying in the wind, tickling her heart until it felt itchy and numb. Other flowers refused to be outdone, popping up one after another until a vast sea of blossoms filled her heart brilliant and dazzling.
Shu Mengli couldn’t help but reach out to cover her chest, fearing that pink petals might actually come fluttering out. Then, she let out a soft laugh, her awkwardness completely gone. She sat up and looked at the girl in the water screen who was smiling at her with squinted eyes.
“Our Luolu is getting better and better at sweet-talking people, even making fun of her sister now.” Unfortunately, she thought, I’ve never been associated with the word ‘cute.’
Jiang Weilu shook her head, instinctively preparing to argue. “I’m not joking, Sister is originally very cu”
However, she couldn’t finish. A voice from behind interrupted her. The unfinished praise died in her throat. She tucked the small mirror away with a natural movement, turning around as if she had never been talking to anyone.
It was the old butler who had just stepped out; he was now standing not far away, looking at Jiang Weilu with a gentle, polite smile. “Eldest Miss, you must be tired after a month of training. By my count, the plum blossoms on the back mountain should be blooming. Would you like to go see them?”
After a month of training together day and night, the relationship between Jiang Weilu and the butler had changed significantly. Since Jiang Weilu had helped his leg pain, the childless old man had begun to view her as his own granddaughter. And Jiang Weilu, though cold by nature, was not unmeltable ice. Moreover, she remembered her sister’s expectations and had made an effort to show kindness to the butler.
Thus, the old butler had become the person Jiang Weilu was closest to in this world, second only to Shu Mengli. She was genuinely intrigued by his words. “Plum blossoms? Where on the back mountain?”
“It’s near the summit where we usually train. Just three hundred meters to the south.”
“I see.” Jiang Weilu became thoughtful. Suddenly, an idea struck her, and her eyes lit up with excitement. “Does that mean we don’t have to train this afternoon? Then I’ll go look right now.”
The butler smiled warmly and nodded. “Do you want me to accompany you?”
“No, that’s okay.” As she answered, Jiang Weilu was already impatiently stepping backward. By the time she finished the sentence, she had turned around and begun to run, waving her hand behind her. “I’ll go by myself. I’ll be back before dinner!”
The cold wind bit at her face, but it couldn’t stop the smile on the girl’s face. Her hand gently touched her chest, feeling the most precious thing in her life.
She had shown her sister the snow; now, she would take her to see the plum blossoms. She wanted to bring all the most beautiful sights of the human world to her.
