- Chapter 13 - Do Zerg Feel Emotions Too?
The Anxious Wait
Speaking of Julian, one must mention the state of entertainment in Zerg society.
They were highly advanced in scientific research but significantly underdeveloped in literature. Within their existing forms of entertainment, academic texts on various sciences were plentiful, but novels or films intended for relaxation were scarce and lacked variety.
Most were romance idol dramas following tropes like “The Overbearing Male Falls for Me” or “The Male Pursued Me Three Hundred Times.” The only real difference from one to the next was the protagonist’s personality.
But this time, Julian’s project was different. He was going to play a male role.
The main plot followed a gentle and kind male insect who falls for a taciturn, loyal military female and actively pursues him. However, after they file their marriage application, the female must leave for the battlefield. The male actively lets him go to fulfill his duty and enters into an engagement. Everyone tells the male that a military female is not worth the wait and offers to distract him from his loneliness, but the male refuses them all, insisting on waiting for that specific female.
After a long wait, the military female finally returns victorious. He is promoted and chosen as a future fleet commander. After the two marry, the female soon gives birth to a male heir, and they live a happy life together.
Ha.
Sirius watched from below as the screenwriter spoke incessantly about his design, claiming it was inspired by Sirius himself.
“I simply cannot believe you actually came here. Did you hear about my inspiration and come specifically to supervise?”
Sirius looked up coldly. The screenwriter’s eyes instantly lit up. “Rest assured, Julian is the most talented actor. Although he is a female insect, he has always worked very hard. We will do our best to capture your elegance on screen!”
“My elegance?” Sirius stood up. “Who told you that is what my elegance looks like?”
Sirius took two steps forward, reaching out to catch Julian as he ran over. He wrapped an arm around Julian’s waist and looked at the screenwriter. “I think you should find another male for your promotion. I may not be quite so noble.”
Holding Julian, he walked out of the production set grandly and openly, leaving a crowd of insects staring at each other in confusion.
“The legendary Lord Sirius is not like that, is he?” one insect murmured.
In the quiet setting, the voice stood out. The crowd looked over simultaneously and nodded in unison. Indeed, Lord Sirius was not supposed to be like that.
Julian thought so too.
After he was taken away by Sirius, Julian was not as happy as one might expect. Instead, he looked worried. The place where Sirius held him grew stiff. He kept glancing at Sirius, moving cautiously according to his lead. Though his waist felt hot where the hand gripped him, he did not dare utter a word.
It was not until both insects were seated in the hovercar that he finally felt a sense of relief. Avoiding Sirius’s gaze, he carefully rubbed his waist before looking obediently at Sirius as if nothing had happened.
“My Lord, I…”
Sirius looked over flatly. Julian bit his lip and offered a small smile, trying his best to widen the expression. “I will tell them not to talk nonsense. It will not affect your plans, so please…”
Do not be angry. Please do not be unhappy.
Julian sat in the passenger seat. Before he could finish his sentence, Sirius grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him forward. Their mouths met. Julian instinctively pursed his lips, his fists tightening. His leg, which was half suspended in the air, drew inward reflexively. However, he reacted quickly, relaxing his body and actively meeting Sirius’s movements.
Julian closed his eyes tightly, his hands climbing onto Sirius’s shoulders. He moved past the back of Sirius’s neck, but he did not stop there. Instead, he continued down his back, patting and stroking him with a gentle, slow rhythm.
When the kiss ended, Julian leaned against Sirius’s neck, breathing shallowly. The warm breath seeped through the fabric, spreading from the shoulder to the rest of the body. Sirius felt a little warmer.
Julian whispered, “My Lord, do you feel a little happier now?”
The hand Sirius had slid inside Julian’s clothes paused, momentarily unsure where to settle. Finally, he withdrew it and pulled his face back just enough to look at Julian.
“Why? Why do you think I am unhappy?”
How could everyone notice? Weren’t the Zerg supposed to be driven only by ambition and interest, devoid of emotion? Why did it feel like every insect in the galaxy could see right through him now?
Julian hugged him tighter and bit his lower lip. His body trembled slightly, but eventually, he pulled back from Sirius’s shoulder. He looked up at him with teary eyes. “I do not know, but I just feel that you are unhappy. I, Julian, Julian is a little afraid. I am afraid of how you have suddenly changed, and I do not know what I should do. Did Julian make you angry?”
“No, no,” Sirius sighed. “It has nothing to do with you. It has nothing to do with me. It has nothing to do with anyone.”
He was just feeling a little bit miserable; it would pass soon, very soon. He was like a drowning man grasping at a straw. His right hand tightly gripped the brooch on his left chest. A familiar roaring sound filled his ears, and he began to feel nauseated again.
Sirius’s right hand exerted more force, the pain becoming increasingly sharp. He finally snapped back to reality. At that moment, a cool touch disturbed his thoughts. Sirius looked up to see Julian covering his hand with both of his own. Julian lowered his head and gently rubbed his fingers.
“My Lord, Julian will be very good. If you are unhappy, just come to Julian, all right? Let Julian stay with you.”
He carefully opened Sirius’s hand and blew gently on the red marks in the palm. The roaring in Sirius’s ears faded into silence.
A hug is perhaps the most intimate and secure thing between two intelligent beings. On the side where his chest felt empty, he touched another heart, vibrant and burning. They held each other tightly in that moment.
A doubt naturally rose in his mind: Do Zerg feel emotions too?
There was no one to answer him now. But it did not matter anymore, because Sirius had a rare, good night’s sleep. There was no struggle, no hesitation, just like that morning when he met Elias. It was only natural; having gone without rest for days, Sirius was bound to sleep eventually.
Unlike the morning, this time he was with a different female insect, one he had never expected to be with. Perhaps being with Julian in the future would not be so hard to accept? Sirius thought before his consciousness faded.
When he opened his eyes again, it was another bright, sunny day. The artificial sun rose exactly at seven in the morning. Sirius stretched, sat up, and moved his shoulders. His nose inevitably twitched.
In the next moment, the bedroom door was pushed open gently. Julian looked at Sirius with surprise. “Laogong, you are already awake!”
He opened the door fully and leaned in to kiss the corner of Sirius’s mouth, regardless of whether Sirius had brushed his teeth. In fact, Sirius had gone straight to sleep upon returning yesterday. He had missed two rounds of washing up, but Julian did not mind at all and kissed him happily.
Sirius ducked away slightly. “You do not even care if I am clean.”
“You are very clean, My Lord. Everywhere.” Julian boldly rubbed against the side of Sirius’s face. It was not until Sirius showed a definite intention to wash up that Julian stood up, pulled open the curtains, and led the refreshed Sirius to eat.
Today’s breakfast was made by Julian himself. Due to the prevalence of robots and food synthesizers, fewer and fewer insects knew how to cook. Julian’s cooking was a rare treat; not only did it look and smell delicious, but he had also carefully carved the food into flower shapes, making Sirius chuckle softly.
It was a pleasant breakfast. Afterward, Sirius felt warm all over. He walked into the Research Institute and politely greeted colleagues who came to check on him. He even exchanged a hug with a male colleague before returning to his office.
But before he went to check the bones he had brought back, Sirius tested other samples first. After he confirmed that his instruments were working correctly, he let out a deep breath, turned on the soundproofing, and sat quietly in his chair with his head lowered in silence.
After a long time, Sirius thought he was finally prepared. Regardless of the outcome, he should not break down. Probably.
Thinking this, he took out the well packaged, high quality small box. He opened the box, scraped a small amount of residue from each bone, and placed them on specific machines. Sirius held his breath and operated the equipment with extreme care.
Four hours. It would take only four hours to determine the age of these stones, the relationship between the corpses, and their genetic link to the Zerg. This was a monumental experiment. Regardless of the result, it would answer the question of how the Zerg came to be.
But if the result was different from what Sirius imagined. Sirius stood up, unable to dwell on stray thoughts. He became restless, pacing back and forth in his office.
Between the anxiety and tension, time seemed to stretch infinitely. Sirius could not help but think further. What if the Zerg really have no connection to humans? If they did not evolve from humans, would he be negating his own origin and everything he was as a human?
But if he did not negate it, what could he do? He belonged neither to the Zerg nor to the humans. He would be nothing. So, it would be best if the Zerg and humans were related. That way, he, as a chimera of the two, would have something to lean on and no longer be a rootless weed.
But was that possible?
Sirius continued to take deep breaths, constantly adjusting his mindset. He told himself not to expect too much, not to hold on to too much hope. He closed his eyes and quietly felt his heartbeat. After an unknown amount of time, a sudden sound echoed in the office.
Ding!
The test results were out.
