- Chapter 9 - First Day Moving In
Shen Yifeng returned from the company late at night. There was a hint of fatigue between his sharp brows. Upon arriving home, he went straight to the kitchen to drink some water before heading upstairs. As he passed Jiang Wu’s room, his footsteps faltered slightly.
He did not know why he had allowed Jiang Wu to move in with him. His original plan had been for their arrangement to end the moment Jiang Wu was discharged. However, the moment his grandfather mentioned it, his body had reacted before his brain, and he had nodded in agreement. Later, he reflected that perhaps it was because of his grandfather; seeing him again, he realized his grandfather’s white hair had increased, and he was no longer as robust as he once was.
Ignoring the strange feeling in his heart and having resolved the issues that had been weighing on him throughout the day, he exhaled, stripped off his clothes, and headed to the bathroom.
Seven-thirty in the morning.
Shen Yifeng returned from his morning run. After showering and changing, he went out, only to find Jiang Wu’s room door remained tightly shut. He glanced at the time; it was already eight o’clock.
He went downstairs, but Jiang Wu was not at the dining table. There was only one breakfast serving, which appeared to be his own. He turned to look at the second floor. Still asleep? That made sense; while in the hospital, Jiang Wu usually arrived around noon each day. A trace of disappointment, which he did not notice himself, flickered in his eyes. After finishing his breakfast, Shen Yifeng left for work.
Jiang Wu’s only non-spoiled quality was that he was not particular about where he slept. Thus, even at the Shen residence, he slept soundly until nine-thirty. Fortunately, he had already told Uncle Liu that he would be waking up late and that breakfast did not need to be prepared for him. After washing up, he went downstairs. The living room was empty.
Jiang Wu rubbed his hungry stomach and headed to the kitchen to find something to eat. Just as he reached the kitchen door, Uncle Liu’s voice came from behind him. “Young Master Jiang, are you looking for breakfast?”
Jiang Wu turned around. Uncle Liu was wearing a sun hat and holding a large pair of shears, likely having been busy in the garden. Jiang Wu offered a smile. “Yes, I am a little hungry.”
“One moment, Young Master Jiang, I will have someone prepare breakfast for you immediately.” Uncle Liu reached for his phone, seemingly about to call the cook.
Jiang Wu quickly intervened. “Uncle Liu, no, that is not necessary.”
Seeing Jiang Wu’s strong reaction, Uncle Liu stopped and looked at him, puzzled. Jiang Wu scratched his head, feeling embarrassed. “I can just eat some bread and milk; there is no need to trouble the cook.”
He could not wake up on time, and having someone reopen a clean kitchen just for him made him feel guilty. Unfortunately, his protest was met with Uncle Liu frowning in disapproval. “How can that be?”
He went to make the call anyway. Jiang Wu explained further, “Uncle Liu, it is already ten o’clock. Lunch will be soon. I will just eat a little now and save my appetite for lunch.”
Considering this, Uncle Liu hung up. “Very well.”
Looking at the slender youth, Uncle Liu felt a surge of affection and could not help but advise, “Young Master Jiang, try to wake up earlier in the future. Breakfast is important for your health.”
“Okay.” Jiang Wu nodded while eating a piece of cold bread. Maybe I should just wake up earlier for breakfast in the future. This cold bread is truly not very good.
After eating, Jiang Wu watched some TV but soon grew bored and decided to go for a walk. The place where Shen Yifeng lived was quiet with a beautiful environment. Perhaps because he lived alone, the villa was not huge, but it was exquisitely and luxuriously decorated. Jiang Wu went to the garden to bask in the sun.
Watching the small fountain in the distance, Jiang Wu wondered what he should do with his time. He could not just lie around idly; it was too boring. He was only twenty; at this age, he should be in school.
Maybe I should go to school. But where? Did he have to go through the grueling entrance exams again? At the thought of entrance exams, Jiang Wu wrinkled his nose. While school was a regret he wanted to address, the exams were absolutely out of the question. He was a hedonist who could not endure even a little hardship.
The sun was mild today. He lay in a hanging chair in the small floral pavilion, the warm summer breeze blowing gently, causing the chair to sway rhythmically. As he thought, he began to feel drowsy. Before he could fall asleep, his phone rang, giving him a fright that chased all sleepiness away. It was a call from the original owner’s father.
Jiang Wu did not want to answer. He felt the father’s attitude toward the original owner was strange. He was not exactly good to him; the original owner had grown up without any assets in his name, and his father had never mentioned him taking over the company. But he was not bad either; the original owner had caused endless trouble, yet his father never blamed him. Even when the original owner destroyed his father’s most prized possession upon discovering his infidelity, his father had not uttered a word of reproach.
Searching through the original owner’s memories of his father, Jiang Wu found their relationship bizarre. He could not quite put his finger on it, but he felt uncomfortable, unlike the relationship he had with his own parents in his past life.
By the time he hesitated, the call ended. He thought the person would call again, but they did not; they simply sent a text message asking him to call back when he had time. Jiang Wu pondered for a moment and decided to let it be. He truly disliked the original owner’s father, and for people he disliked, Jiang Wu preferred to avoid contact.
Checking his phone, it was already twelve-thirty. Uncle Liu should be coming to call him for lunch soon. As if on cue, Uncle Liu appeared in the distance. Jiang Wu immediately got out of the hanging chair and walked toward him.
“Young Master Jiang, time to eat.” Uncle Liu wore a kind smile. Uncle Liu had originally worked at the old family estate as Grandfather Shen’s butler; after Shen Yifeng moved out, the grandfather had sent him over out of concern.
“I saw you from afar, and I knew it was time for lunch. Did Auntie Chen make something good today?” Jiang Wu’s tone was cheerful, his eyes curving into crescents. Auntie Chen was also from the old estate; she was a cook whose food Jiang Wu had loved since the very first meal.
Seeing Jiang Wu’s lively and adorable demeanor, Uncle Liu’s smile deepened. “Everything is your favorite.”
Jiang Wu gave a happy cheer and headed to the dining room. As soon as he entered, he spotted a familiar face.
“Secretary Xu! Why are you here?” Jiang Wu looked surprised to see Xu Gu in the dining room.
Xu Gu offered him a gentle smile. “I came to deliver lunch for the boss.”
Only then did Jiang Wu notice the lunch box by his side. He nodded in realization. He had thought Shen Yifeng would be returning to eat. The food was already packed, and after a brief word, Xu Gu left. Watching him go, Jiang Wu could not help but ask Uncle Liu, “Uncle Liu, does Mr. Shen never return home for lunch?”
“That is correct. The Young Master is very busy. He generally only eats breakfast and dinner at home, and sometimes he barely makes it home for dinner,” Uncle Liu said, his tone tinged with sympathy and helplessness. Having watched Shen Yifeng grow up, he practically saw him as a nephew.
“He works so hard.” Jiang Wu thought of Shen Yifeng working and muttered softly, “No wonder he is still single at thirty. I do not think anyone could tolerate their significant other being a workaholic.”
