- Chapter 8 - Living Together
Jiang Wu returned to the sofa, wrapped himself in the small blanket, and drifted off to sleep shortly after. When he woke up again, it was already dark outside. The door to Shen Yifeng’s room remained tightly shut, just as it had been before he fell asleep.
Jiang Wu stretched, and as he turned to get off the sofa, he noticed an insulated lunch box on the coffee table with a note: “Wake up and eat.” It seemed this was for him, and as it happened, he was hungry. He went to the washroom to wash his face and rinse his mouth. Just as he opened the lunch box, he heard the sound of a door opening. Jiang Wu turned back and saw Xu Gu emerging from Shen Yifeng’s room. The two made eye contact and smiled at each other.
“Thank you for the meal, Secretary Xu.” Jiang Wu naturally assumed that the lunch on the table had been purchased by Xu Gu.
Xu Gu replied, “You are welcome. The boss ordered it.”
Jiang Wu smiled without further comment. “I know, but thank you nonetheless.”
“Please enjoy your meal, Young Master Jiang. I will be on my way, but I will come to pick you up later,” Xu Gu added.
Jiang Wu nodded. “Okay.”
After Xu Gu left, Jiang Wu thought for a moment before rising and heading to Shen Yifeng’s room. He pursed his lips and knocked.
“Enter,” Shen Yifeng’s voice came from inside.
When Jiang Wu entered, Shen Yifeng was propped up on the bed with a laptop on a table resting across his chest. He was hunched over, typing away at the keyboard, looking incredibly busy. Jiang Wu’s footsteps faltered. Did I come at a bad time again?
Shen Yifeng heard the door open but heard no one speak for a long time. Puzzled, he looked up and saw Jiang Wu standing at the door, a look of annoyance and regret plastered on his beautiful face.
Shen Yifeng’s hands stopped typing. “Jiang Wu?”
Jiang Wu noticed Shen Yifeng’s gaze and walked over stiffly, his tone full of apology and guilt. “Did I disturb you?”
Seeing the youth’s cautious demeanor, Shen Yifeng expressionlessly closed his laptop. “No, I just finished.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the youth looked up abruptly, his eyes shining brightly as he stared at him. “Really?”
“Mm.” Shen Yifeng unnaturally looked away from the youth’s shining gaze. “Do you need something from me?”
If Xu Gu had been there, he would have been stunned; this was the first time he had heard his boss’s voice sound so gentle. Of course, to Jiang Wu, it sounded exactly as it always had.
Jiang Wu nodded and offered a smile. “I came to thank you.”
Under Shen Yifeng’s curious gaze, he smiled and said, “Thank you for having Secretary Xu bring me food.”
Shen Yifeng replied, “You are welcome.”
Jiang Wu was no longer as afraid of Shen Yifeng. After two days of interaction, he felt that Shen Yifeng just had a fierce appearance and a cold voice. He was actually quite a good person, the type people often called cold on the outside, warm on the inside. If anyone who knew Shen Yifeng heard this thought, they would likely laugh out loud.
“Shen Yifeng, do you want to eat some grapes? I bought them today; they are very sweet and delicious,” Jiang Wu said softly, his moist, wide eyes filled with expectation.
Shen Yifeng had already eaten, and he did not like overly sweet things. However, looking at Jiang Wu’s expression, the refusal that had formed on his tongue was swallowed back. “Okay.”
Seeing Shen Yifeng agree, Jiang Wu happily ran out, took a bunch of grapes from his bag, washed them, and brought them back to Shen Yifeng. He placed the plate next to the laptop and gave Shen Yifeng a shy smile. “I will head out now; remember to eat them.” With that, he trotted out.
Shen Yifeng watched the disappearing back for a moment before shifting his gaze to the crystal-clear grapes before him. He stared at them for a long time before finally reaching out to take one.
They were indeed very sweet. And he did not dislike them.
After Jiang Wu left, he happily ate his meal. He thought cheerfully that perhaps he could be friends with Shen Yifeng. Time passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, a month had gone by. Shen Yifeng had mostly recovered and was about to be discharged.
Over this month, Jiang Wu had come to the hospital for half the day, and Xu Gu had taken him home in the evening. Meanwhile, Shen Yifeng had been busy with work, and Jiang Wu only ever saw assistants bustling in and out with stacks of blue, white, and red files. The two of them lived in peaceful harmony, occasionally exchanging a few words.
On the day of the discharge, Grandfather Shen arrived. Since the day Shen Yifeng woke up, he had only called, never visiting in person. Jiang Wu had assumed that his collaboration with Shen Yifeng would end on the day of his discharge. He had even prepared to take his money and walk away, but Grandfather Shen used the excuse that they had not spent enough time together and made him move in with Shen Yifeng directly.
Jiang Wu was stunned when he heard this. He instinctively looked at Shen Yifeng, who still wore that poker face, showing no emotion whatsoever. Although he could not read his expression, he believed Shen Yifeng would refuse. But to his surprise, Shen Yifeng nodded. He agreed.
Jiang Wu was even more bewildered. But thinking of the eight-figure compensation stated in the contract, he softened his stance. After all, money should not be that easy to earn.
Jiang Wu had wanted to return to the Jiang family house to pick up some clothes, but the place Shen Yifeng lived was in the opposite direction. Jiang Wu was too lazy to go through the trouble and decided against it; there was nothing important there anyway. As for daily necessities, he figured a Shen household as large as this would not be lacking in resources. As for clothes, he could just buy more; he still had some money left, and while it was not much, it was plenty for a new wardrobe.
Shen Yifeng lived alone and did not live with Grandfather Shen. By the time they arrived at Shen Yifeng’s house, it was already noon. Originally, Grandfather Shen had intended to eat with them, but he received a phone call saying a friend had arrived and left. Before leaving, he specifically instructed Jiang Wu to take good care of Shen Yifeng.
After Grandfather Shen left, the surroundings suddenly became quiet. Jiang Wu was about to ask where he would be staying when he heard Shen Yifeng’s voice: “I will have Uncle Liu take you to your room.”
“Uncle Liu, take him to his room,” Shen Yifeng told Uncle Liu, who had been waiting nearby. After a pause, he said to Jiang Wu, “I have to go to the company, so I will not be eating here later. Just tell Uncle Liu whatever you want to eat.”
Jiang Wu nodded obediently. “Okay.”
After he spoke, Uncle Liu stepped forward, took Jiang Wu’s sparse luggage, and said with a cheerful smile, “Young Master Jiang, let us go to your room.”
“Okay, thank you, Uncle Liu.” Jiang Wu offered a sweet smile. He could feel the goodwill Uncle Liu was projecting. Uncle Liu had received word from Shen Shufeng long ago, so he knew this youth was Shen Yifeng’s lucky-omen fiancé. The youth was beautiful, more exquisite than anyone on TV, and very polite, so Uncle Liu was quite fond of him.
“Young Master Jiang, your room is next to the Young Master’s. Everything has been cleaned and set up inside. If you need anything, just let me know,” Uncle Liu said as he opened the door.
“Okay.”
After Jiang Wu entered the room, Uncle Liu left, and he began placing his clothes in the wardrobe. After showering and changing, he prepared to head downstairs to eat; he was hungry, having not eaten anything since the morning. However, just as he opened his door, he saw Shen Yifeng coming out of his own room next door.
Jiang Wu froze for a moment. He had thought Shen Yifeng would have left for the company by now. Had he changed his mind and decided to stay and eat? At this thought, he immediately raised a smile to greet him: “Mr. Shen.”
Shen Yifeng froze when he saw Jiang Wu, though it was impossible to tell from his expressionless face. He had not expected Uncle Liu to arrange Jiang Wu’s room right next to his own. Shen Yifeng did not speak, simply offering a slight nod.
Jiang Wu had just showered and was wearing a pure white Cuban-collar shirt. Perhaps because he was quite slim, the neckline opened wider than it would on others. Shen Yifeng was significantly taller than him, and at a glance, he could clearly see Jiang Wu’s collarbones and the space below them.
Jiang Wu was very fair, not the pale look of someone who had not seen the sun, but a milky, glowing white. His skin was smooth, looking like delicious milk jelly. Shen Yifeng quickly shifted his gaze away unnaturally, as if trying to hide something. He ignored Jiang Wu and walked away at a brisk pace.
Jiang Wu watched him go, wondering to himself why he walked so fast. Was he going to be late? He muttered to himself and then rushed downstairs; he could already smell the braised pork ribs.
