- Chapter 5 - It Makes One Want To...
When Xu Gu received a call from his boss asking for food to be delivered, he was momentarily surprised. After all, he had just delivered dinner to Shen Yifeng less than an hour ago. Logically speaking, even a pig would not get hungry that quickly—though he was certainly not implying his boss was a pig.
Sure enough, a soft, sweet voice belonging to a youth came through the phone shortly after. It turned out the food was not for his boss at all.
He purchased the meal and returned to the hospital. After pressing the doorbell, the door opened. It was not the caregiver or another assistant who greeted him, but a cute and beautiful young man. Looking at the youth, Xu Gu somehow felt that the meal must have been meant for him. He offered a standard smile and said gently, “Hello, my boss asked me to deliver this meal.”
Jiang Wu had not expected the person to arrive so quickly. He stepped aside to let the man enter. “Hello.”
Xu Gu carried the lunch box into the room, placed it on the table, and turned to look at the youth standing behind him. “Would you like me to set it out for you?”
Jiang Wu shook his head immediately. “Thank you, but no need. I will do it myself.”
Xu Gu adjusted his glasses, his smile unwavering. “Very well.”
He then went into Shen Yifeng’s room, gave a brief greeting, and left. Thinking about the youth he had just seen, he felt a wave of curiosity. Who was he? He had been by Shen Yifeng’s side for seven or eight years as a personal assistant, so he knew everyone in Shen Yifeng’s circle, including his family, quite well. He was certain the youth was not a relative of Shen Yifeng.
Could he be a kept lover?
The moment the thought appeared, he shook his head to dismiss it. That couldn’t be it. His boss had lived for twenty-eight years with a private life comparable to that of an ascetic monk; he had never even had a proper romantic partner, let alone a kept lover. Sometimes, Xu Gu even suspected his boss might have problems in certain areas.
But recalling the youth’s face, Xu Gu felt it wasn’t impossible. He had never seen someone so beautiful. It wasn’t just the face; it was the youth’s entire aura. He was delicate and fragile, like a precious luxury item, or perhaps more like a little prince cherished by a king. It was a presence that made one instinctively want to spoil and love him.
Jiang Wu, unaware of Xu Gu’s thoughts, was currently tucking into the delicious food. In his past life, due to his health, there were many things he could not eat; he mostly survived on hospital nutritional meals. Since he had a healthy body in this life, he decided he would taste all the delicacies the world had to offer. Although he was hungry, his posture while eating remained unhurried and elegant, a pleasant sight to behold.
When he was eighty percent full, he stopped, packed up the leftovers, and threw them into the trash can by the door. The sun had completely set, but outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city was ablaze with light. Various colors of neon flickered and crossed in the dark night. Jiang Wu stood by the window for a while, feeling a bit bored.
Suddenly, a problem occurred to him: he did not know where he was sleeping tonight. This ward only had one room, which was the one Shen Yifeng was currently occupying. The rest was just the living room, and there was no bed there, only a sofa. While the sofa was large and soft, he still preferred a bed. Jiang Wu was in a dilemma. Should he go out and stay in a hotel?
However, when Grandfather Shen left, he had specifically instructed him to take good care of Shen Yifeng. If he went to a hotel, what would happen if Shen Yifeng had an emergency in the middle of the night? The original caregiver had already been dismissed by Grandfather Shen, under the pretense that Jiang Wu should look after Shen Yifeng to “cultivate feelings.”
Jiang Wu frowned, wondering if he should ask Shen Yifeng. But then he remembered Shen Yifeng’s stern expression from earlier that evening, and he shook his head internally. He was a little afraid of him. After pondering, he decided that if there was truly no other way, he would just have to make do on the sofa for the night. Actually, the sofa was quite comfortable anyway.
With that settled, he returned to the sofa, turned on the TV, found a variety show, and started watching with relish.
Inside the room, Shen Yifeng had just finished a video conference. His temples were throbbing with fatigue, and his head felt dizzy. It was expected; after all, he had been using his brain heavily immediately after waking up. If it didn’t hurt, what would?
He rubbed his temples, closed his laptop, and prepared to go to the bathroom to wash up. He had not fully recovered and still needed support to walk, so he reached out and pulled the emergency cord by the bed. The bell rang.
When he saw who was at the door, Shen Yifeng was stunned for a moment before realizing this must be another one of his grandfather’s schemes.
Jiang Wu had been watching TV outside when he heard the bell. He was familiar with the sound from his past life. Fearing that Shen Yifeng might be in trouble, he hurried into the room without even putting his shoes on. Looking at Shen Yifeng’s stern face, Jiang Wu felt a bit of trepidation. He trotted to the bedside and asked cautiously, “Is there something wrong?”
Shen Yifeng observed the fear in the youth’s eyes. Strangely, the memory of the youth’s red-eyed, aggrieved look from earlier that day flashed through his mind. The person before him was very timid.
The words that were on the tip of his tongue were swallowed back. He thought for a moment, then used what he considered to be a gentle voice. “It is nothing.”
Although he thought he had softened his tone, to Jiang Wu, it sounded exactly the same as before—stern and cold.
“Oh, then I am going out.”
Upon hearing Shen Yifeng say there was nothing wrong, Jiang Wu did not want to linger and exited the room. As Jiang Wu turned toward the door, Shen Yifeng noticed that the youth was not wearing any shoes. Shen Yifeng had excellent eyesight, and under the glare of the bright lights, the room was as illuminated as day, so he could clearly see Jiang Wu’s bare feet.
His ankles were very thin, as if they could be encircled by a single hand, and very fair. Perhaps because he was walking barefoot on the floor, the soles of his feet were slightly flushed. Because his skin was so white, that hint of red looked more like pink, and the contrast between the pink and white was inexplicably…
Realizing what he was thinking, Shen Yifeng’s expression changed. He cursed himself silently and shifted his gaze away from the doorway. He picked up his phone and called Xu Gu, telling him to come to the hospital and find a new caregiver.
Thinking about what his grandfather had done, he was so angry he laughed. He really was an old fool. He had actually fired the caregiver and wanted the youth to take care of him. Thinking of the youth’s slender frame, he would probably fall apart if he so much as leaned on him lightly.
After Jiang Wu went out, he felt Shen Yifeng was rather bizarre—why ring the bell for no reason? Of course, he only dared to complain internally. After lying back down on the sofa, he sighed, thinking that this money was truly hard to earn.
