- Chapter 2 - A Marriage Proposal? With a Man?
Jiang Wu carried his few belongings and walked forward. “Secretary Zhang.”
“Young Master, Mr. Jiang sent me to pick you up.” Secretary Zhang took the luggage from Jiang Wu.
“Okay, thank you. Sorry for the trouble.” Jiang Wu smiled, his voice tinged with the lethargic laziness of someone who had just woken up.
Jiang Wu was exquisite and beautiful. When he smiled, two faint dimples appeared. Perhaps because he had just been sleeping, his eyes still held a lingering moisture, making them look crystal clear. Secretary Zhang was stunned; he had not expected Jiang Wu to thank him, let alone with a smile. If he had not known better, he would have suspected this was not his boss’s son at all. He remembered that this young master used to be incredibly arrogant and domineering, usually tossing his luggage at him with a disdainful glance whenever he came for a pickup.
Why did he seem like a completely different person after just one trip to City B? Secretary Zhang was puzzled, though he did not show it. “It is my duty.”
The two left the airport. “Is my dad at home or the office?” Jiang Wu asked from the backseat.
“Mr. Jiang is at the office,” Secretary Zhang replied.
“Oh.”
After that, the two stopped speaking. Jiang Wu took out his phone to play a game. An hour later, the car stopped in front of a villa. Secretary Zhang got out, walked to the back door, and opened it. “Young Master, we have arrived.”
A minute passed, and there was no movement from inside. Secretary Zhang was puzzled. He bent over to look inside and saw Jiang Wu leaning against the car window, his phone dropped to the side, fast asleep.
The sunset cast a warm glow through the window, staining the youth’s black hair with a layer of gold and making his skin appear fair and translucent. His curved eyelashes trembled slightly, and steady breathing came from his nose, making him look like a sleeping prince. Seeing this, Secretary Zhang suddenly felt it would be cruel to wake him.
Just as he was hesitating, Jiang Wu woke up on his own. He opened his eyes and looked at Secretary Zhang by the door, his voice soft and drowsy. “Are we here?”
“Yes, we are,” Secretary Zhang quickly replied.
Jiang Wu nodded and stepped out of the car. “Thank you, Secretary Zhang.”
“You are welcome; it is my duty,” Secretary Zhang replied.
Watching Jiang Wu’s receding back, Secretary Zhang felt again that the young master seemed like a different person. Could it be that he was bullied while he was away?
Jiang Wu slowly walked toward his home based on the original owner’s memories. Upon entering the main hall, he found a group of people sitting in the living room and felt a bit dazed. Why were there so many people? Jiang Wu looked at the crowd and searched through his memories. Aside from his father, stepmother, and half-brother, he did not recognize anyone else.
Before he could react, he saw his father look up and say with a jolly smile, “Jiang Jiang is back! Come over here.”
At his father’s words, everyone in the living room immediately focused their attention on him, some giving him scrutinizing looks. Jiang Wu smiled politely at them and walked over. “Dad.”
He then shifted his gaze to the beautiful woman sitting next to his father. “Aunt Chen.”
His polite greeting caught the woman off guard. “Oh, you are back.”
“Dad, I am a bit tired. I am going upstairs to rest.” Jiang Wu did not like crowded places, especially when he did not know the people present. Mr. Jiang wanted to say something, but seeing the exhaustion in the youth’s eyes, he waved his hand. “Go get some rest. I will have Auntie Liu bring you some food.”
“Okay, I understand.” Jiang Wu left for his room without hesitation.
Inside, he tossed his luggage aside and sprawled out on the sofa, staring at the ceiling. The original owner’s family situation was like many wealthy family novels: his birth mother died young, he had a stepmother, a half-brother, and a half-sister. This was the reason the original owner ran away to City B. As the saying goes, a stepmother often brings a stepfather, and that was true here too.
Initially, the original owner was not too resistant to his father remarrying, but what truly offended him was discovering that the woman’s two children were only two years younger than him. At first, he thought they were from the woman’s previous marriage. Half a year ago, he discovered they were actually his father’s children, proving that his father had cheated while his mother was still alive. Upon learning this, he had a huge argument with his father and ran away.
In City B, he went to a bar to drown his sorrows, met the heroine who was working part-time, and a series of events followed. Jiang Wu felt annoyed just thinking about the plot. Jiang Wu was someone who did not like to use his brain, partly because he did not have much of one. He was exhausted by all this drama. In his past life, he had been the apple of his family’s eye, cherished by everyone. Who would have thought he would transmigrate into a poor soul who was not loved by his father and lost his mother early?
Knock, knock, knock.
“Jiang Jiang, can I come in?” It was his father’s voice.
Jiang Wu stood up. “Yes.”
The door opened, and his father entered with a smile. Seeing that smile, Jiang Wu had a bad premonition.
“Jiang Jiang, Dad wants to discuss something with you,” Jiang Nanming said. Though he phrased it as a discussion, his tone sounded more like a notification. Jiang Wu remained silent.
“I have arranged a marriage for you,” Jiang Nanming continued. “You are not young anymore.”
“Wait!” Jiang Wu was stunned and interrupted him immediately. “Dad, what did you just say about a marriage?” He was terrified, seriously doubting his hearing. If his memory served him right, he was only twenty.
“Just what you heard,” Jiang Nanming said mercilessly. “The other party is the Shen family.”
“Dad, I am only twenty.” Jiang Wu felt speechless.
“Twenty is not young. You can get a marriage license,” Jiang Nanming replied.
“I will not do it!” Jiang Wu refused. Setting aside his age, in his view, marriage was a sacred bond between two people who loved each other. He could not possibly marry someone he did not know.
Jiang Nanming had anticipated this reaction. Ignoring the refusal, he continued, “Jiang Jiang, you know the status of the Shen family in City A. It is not that I want to marry you off; the Shen family specifically requested you. I am also.”
The more he listened, the more confused Jiang Wu became. Marry off? Should it not be taking a wife?
“Wait! Marry off? Should it not be taking a wife?”
“If only it were,” Jiang Nanming said.
“Why marry off?” Jiang Wu asked.
“The one you are betrothed to is Shen Yifeng, the head of the Shen family. Jiang Jiang, even I would not dare use the word taking a wife with him,” Jiang Nanming said.
Jiang Wu was dazed. Shen Yifeng. The name sounded like a man’s name.
“So the other party is a man?” Jiang Wu asked hesitantly.
Jiang Nanming looked at him with an expression that said, Are you stupid? “What else would it be?”
