- Chapter 85 - A Misunderstanding
When she heard the voice, Lin Yanyu turned toward where it came from.
A young demon in a black robe stood behind the blue-robed cat demon. He wore a half black mask that even covered his eyes. In his right hand was a wooden cane, and his left hand rested lightly on the blue-robed cat demon’s shoulder.
As soon as he spoke, all the cat demons of Chenyu Valley dropped to their knees and bowed respectfully.
“Valley Master, they’re not just some innocent passersby!” said the blue-robed cat demon called “Eighteen.” He alone didn’t kneel but sneered instead. “That black cat is full of lies! She claims to be the daughter of the Lord of the Demon Realm, saying a ‘Blood Leopard’ has been slaughtering cat demons and even tried to trick us with demon fire to make us hide. Everyone knows the two realms have long been sealed apart since when would the Demon Lord have the leisure to send his daughter all the way across realms just to warn us? And besides, would the Demon Lord’s daughter ever form a master-servant blood contract with an exorcist?”
“Is that so?” The Valley Master sounded mildly surprised.
Eighteen nodded. “She’s our kind and still young, so I didn’t want to argue but that exorcist beside her absolutely cannot stay!”
Lin Yanyu’s eyes narrowed. “So, you’re calling me a liar?”
“Do not take offense, young one,” the Valley Master said gently. “It’s just that your story is hard to believe. Recently, only exorcists and mortal herb collectors have entered Chenyu Valley. As for the ‘Blood Leopard’… that killing god does not hunt here.”
“Exactly! We’ve never even seen him,” Eighteen said. “If he really were coming, we’d all be dead before your warning ever reached us.”
The other cat demons murmured in agreement.
Lin Yanyu frowned. If the Blood Leopard hadn’t used cat demon flesh, then what had Xiao Xianyi used to activate the “Stasis Formation”? Yun Quexin swore she’d seen Yang Hengyu step into the array and come out with skin pale and flawless. If Xiao Xianyi wasn’t desperate to resurrect Zhu Wansheng, why steal Yun Quexin’s body?
It didn’t add up unless he’d already found a substitute for cat demon flesh.
“I’ve seen him!” Yun Quexin suddenly shouted. “I am the princess of Hanlan City! Xiao Xianyi tricked me, beat me half to death, and threw me out of the city! He told me himself that his formation required cat demon flesh as sacrifice”
Before she could finish, the cat demons began whispering.
“Another lunatic? Are all the outsiders like this?”
“One crazier than the next. The Blood Leopard leaves no survivors how could anyone be ‘half-dead’ from him?”
“That exorcist must’ve filled their heads with lies!” one cat demon said, pointing at Qin Changxin. “Look, both cats stick close to him one even sits in his arms! Only demon servants act like that!”
“Who’s his servant!?” Yun Quexin snapped, furious that they’d drawn such a conclusion. “You ignorant, lowborn fools how dare you twist the truth like that!”
Her words hit like a rock dropped into still water every cat demon froze.
“She… insulted us?” one said in disbelief. “If we kill the exorcist, they’d be free why defend him?”
“Must be his brainwashing!” another spat. “Exorcists are vile!”
“Exactly! Those poor cats have been enslaved!”
Their voices rose in anger until they all turned toward the Valley Master. “Valley Master, give the order we’ll kill the exorcist!”
The Valley Master didn’t answer, but when Lin Yanyu saw the cat demons raise their bloodstained weapons, she knew he’d given silent consent.
Her expression hardened. If they didn’t leave now, a fight was inevitable. She revealed her true form and nudged Qin Changxin. “Get on! We’re leaving!”
“But the Blood Leopard”
“If they know his habits so well, they don’t need our warning! Get on before”
Before she could finish, her ears rang and her vision spun; the world filled with flickering stars.
An illusion!
Who was casting it?
Luckily, Lin Yanyu had trained under Feng Funing and reacted instantly. Forcing herself awake, she shielded Qin Changxin and began chanting the special mantra her mother had taught her to dispel illusions.
At the sound, the Valley Master’s ears twitched.
The illusion faded quickly. Once free, Lin Yanyu turned human again and threw out five talisman papers glowing with Feng Funing’s sigils.
The other two were still trapped, so Lin Yanyu stood guard, her spiritual pressure radiating outward.
The cat demons still aimed for Qin Changxin but didn’t avoid Lin Yanyu; they simply flipped their weapons to the blunt side and struck without mercy.
She didn’t want to harm them and only parried with her hands.
Her monstrous strength showed before the blows even landed, she seized wrists and flung attackers aside, dislocating joints with ease.
Seeing this, the others spread out to form an array but Lin Yanyu was built to shatter such tricks. She threw out a Binding Rope, tripping them up before they could complete the pattern.
When Eighteen lunged at Qin Changxin, Lin Yanyu’s anger flared. She kicked with full force, sending Eighteen flying, then spun and kicked away several more who attacked from behind.
Her legs were as strong as her arms Eighteen tumbled to the Valley Master’s feet, coughing blood and unable to stand.
“V-Valley Master… that black cat is too strong…” she wheezed.
“Enough! Stop!” the Valley Master barked.
“Valley Master?” Eighteen stared in shock. The man released the illusion seal glowing in his palm, leaned on his cane, and slowly approached Lin Yanyu.
Lin Yanyu tensed, ready to fight.
“Silver Jasmine exorcist Feng Funing what is she to you?” he asked when he was seven steps away. “How do you know her secret method for breaking illusions?”
Lin Yanyu answered truthfully, “She’s my mother.”
“Impossible how could an exorcist’s child be a pure-blood demon?” he protested.
“Whether I’m pure-blood or not what’s that to you?” Lin Yanyu shot back coldly.
Before the Valley Master could reply, Eighteen interjected weakly, “You don’t understand… Feng Funing saved our Valley Master’s life”
“Eighteen, silence.” The Valley Master cut her off and turned back to Lin Yanyu. “If you claim to be her daughter, can you prove it?”
Lin Yanyu thought for a moment, then summoned half a Blood-Jade Pendant from her storage charm. She strengthened the lingering scent of Feng Funing’s aura and held it up. “Would this suffice?”
She expected another round of disbelief but the moment she displayed the pendant, every cat demon gasped in shock.
Their ears flattened as they stared at the Valley Master.
“V-Valley Master, that’s the pendant of Lady Feng Funing…” Eighteen whispered.
“It’s said that when the realms separated, the Demon Lord and Lady Feng Funing each kept half of the Blood-Jade Pendant, as the only key between realms,” the Valley Master murmured. “You… truly are her daughter? But why a black cat demon?”
“Because the Demon Lord is also my mother,” Lin Yanyu replied dryly. “I said that when I arrived and released my demonic aura. None of you believed me.”
“We dwell too far from the Demon Realm’s border,” the Valley Master admitted. “We couldn’t recognize her aura. But Lady Feng Funing’s scent we know well. Without her, Chenyu Valley would not exist.”
Behind his opaque mask, Lin Yanyu couldn’t read his face. She pocketed the pendant. “So tonight, we just had a case of family not recognizing family, huh?”
The cat demons lowered their heads in embarrassment. Lin Yanyu slung the unconscious leopard cat over her back, lifted Qin Changxin, and strode toward the exit. “Everything I said is true. The Blood Leopard hasn’t come yet but that doesn’t mean he won’t. If you want to live, prepare yourselves.”
“Wait, young one!” The Valley Master hurried after her, tapping his cane on the ground. Lin Yanyu stopped and glanced back.
Seeing her pause, he brightened. “I am Qing Yu, current master of Chenyu Valley. It was our fault to misunderstand you earlier please forgive us.”
Two cat demons came up, one with a lantern, one helping him stand.
Only then, under the lantern light, did Lin Yanyu notice that his mask was fully opaque.
“Does the Valley Master have more to say?” she asked.
“To tell the truth,” Qing Yu said slowly, “the Blood Leopard and I have an old grudge. Over twenty years ago, he crippled my meridians, blinded me, and threw me into a freezing lake. Lady Feng Funing happened by and saved me, carrying me here to be healed.”
Lin Yanyu stayed silent, listening.
“I have longed to repay her kindness, but she vanished for twenty years, and we cannot leave the valley to search for her,” he sighed. “Since you are her daughter, could you deliver this to her on our behalf?”
He summoned a small green bell tied with a red string and offered it respectfully.
Lin Yanyu looked down at the glowing Silver Jasmine mark on her fingertip and nodded.
