- Chapter 86 - Companions Gather
Watching the enormous black cat spread its wings and fly away from the Dawn Healing Valley, disappearing quickly into the night, Shiba cautiously asked the Valley Master, “Master, we wrongly accused the benefactor’s daughter. What should we do now?”
“Send a few kittens that haven’t yet learned to shapeshift to follow her,” the Valley Master said. “If they encounter the ‘Blood Leopard,’ we’ll contact nearby exorcists to rush in and provide support.” He added, “I have a bad feeling. Although they won’t be trapped in mortal danger, serious injuries are likely unavoidable.”
“Do you really think those useless exorcists can help?” Shiba couldn’t help but sneer, then bowed. “Master, I’m willing to assist them under the pretense of ‘entering the city for errands.’”
“You can’t even withstand the minor attacks of the Young Lord, and now you want to help them deal with the ‘Blood Leopard’?” The Valley Master snorted. “Since you plan to enter the city, why not look for that girl Qingxian there? If she learns that Master Feng Funing’s daughter is seeking trouble with the ‘Blood Leopard,’ she’ll surely help wholeheartedly.”
When Qin Changxin awoke, she found herself lying on a pile of furry cat hair, with a vast pair of blue and red wings flapping above her.
Warm morning sunlight shone down, and she instinctively tried to sit up. Looking down, she noticed she was bound with spiritual energy ropes. Nearby, a leopard cat was pawing at the fur, also tied up with spiritual energy. It seemed Lin Yanyu had restrained them to prevent them from falling off her back.
“You’re awake?” Lin Yanyu’s voice came. “In about half an hour, we’ll reach Lianzhou.”
The area of Lianzhou was larger than Lin Yanyu expected. After leaving Dawn Healing Valley, she communicated with Feng Funing’s consciousness while traveling, moving slowly. Only after the sun rose did they enter the residential area of Lianzhou, still some distance from the royal city.
Qin Changxin stroked the cat fur, untied the spiritual ropes, picked up the leopard cat, and settled behind the giant cat’s neck, sitting cross-legged.
Lin Yanyu was about to ask how she felt when she noticed someone riding out of the forest, twin swords on their back, and quickly shouted, “Hold on!” before diving down.
Lu Qiuyun, on her way, felt a shadow pass over her, followed by a surge of demonic energy. She immediately drew her sword, ready to attack, but then saw the giant cat transform into a humanoid form, cradling a person and a cat as it landed beside her.
“Miss Qin? Miss Lin?” Lu Qiuyun was startled, pulling her horse back and jumping down, ready to ask if they had seen anything along the way. Her gaze, however, unconsciously lingered on the leopard cat.
“Meow” Yun Quexin lazily raised a paw toward her.
“What a noble and beautiful cat!” Lu Qiuyun exclaimed sincerely and reached out to pet it.
Yun Quexin was taken aback by the enthusiasm, staring blankly for a few seconds. She allowed Lu Qiuyun to touch her ears but quickly pawed at her hands, shouting, “Don’t come so close!”
“This is Lianzhou’s Princess Yun Quexin, trapped in the astral form of the ‘Blood Leopard,’” Lin Yanyu quickly explained. “We need to find Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei. The princess’s body has likely been occupied by the ‘Blood Leopard.’”
Lu Qiuyun was shocked and looked at the leopard cat incredulously. After a moment of thought, she extended her hand to Qin Changxin. “Can I hold her? My brothers always say I carry strong righteous energy, which should help suppress the ‘Blood Leopard’s’ evil aura.”
“I have no evil aura!” Yun Quexin immediately flattened her ears and puffed up. “You cannot hold me!”
“But Miss Qin and Miss Lin are a pair, and you can’t always lie in Miss Qin’s arms,” Lu Qiuyun reasoned.
Her voice was soft and sweet, subtly enchanting. Even Yun Quexin felt herself yielding, momentarily thinking, She’s right.
When Yun Quexin came back to herself, she realized she was already in Lu Qiuyun’s arms.
Lu Qiuyun smiled, holding the cat contentedly, mounted her horse, and handed a sheathed sword to Qin Changxin. “We’ll split up. Once we gather information, we’ll communicate through the sword spirit.”
As she rode away, Qin Changxin picked up the sword, observing, “I’ve heard that the second Miss Lu practices both sword techniques and word magic, but I didn’t expect her to use word magic during our conversation.”
“After all, Yun Quexin is Lianzhou’s princess,” Lin Yanyu replied. “Although the Lu family is loyal to the Qin family, they have their own interests. If Miss Lu safely escorts the princess home, the credit naturally goes to the Lu family.”
Qin Changxin nodded silently, then summoned her Wu Yuan Fan and flew toward another city entrance.
“That Valley Master’s illusion skills are impressive. Last night, I couldn’t even move, barely hearing your voices,” Qin Changxin frowned. “He was already a defeated subordinate of Xiao Xianyi; I fear Xiao Xianyi must be even stronger.”
“Don’t worry, the Valley Master already gave us something useful.” Lin Yanyu smiled, producing a blue bell from the gifts of the Valley Master and holding it out. “Do you remember it?”
Qin Changxin’s eyes widened, and she exclaimed, “This is Senior Feng Funing’s ‘Qingfang Bell’!”
“Yes,” Lin Yanyu said, gently tracing the boat pattern on its surface. “This bell is excellent. It can dispel illusions, refresh the mind, and instantly create a protective barrier. With it, even Xiao Xianyi’s demonic fire can be resisted for a while.”
“Why prepare for demonic fire?” Qin Changxin asked, smiling. “When facing Xiao Xianyi, I won’t allow him to release demonic fire again.”
“Then you must interrupt his charge in advance,” Lin Yanyu smiled. “Just don’t hurt yourself again!”
She put away the Qingfang Bell, touching a peach blossom nearby. “The cat demons asked me to give this to Senior Feng Funing. Once Xiao Xianyi is dealt with, I’ll return to the demon realm. You… will you return to the Qin family, or come with me?”
“I want to come with you,” Qin Changxin said. “But the Qin family has no leader now; I must restore order to prevent future disunity.”
“That’s true.” Lin Yanyu pondered for a moment, then whispered in her ear, “A young girl should not carry so much alone. I’ll help you once more.”
“How can I accept that? Mutual assistance ensures lasting trust,” Qin Changxin said, her tone meaningful. “Is there nothing you want from me in return?”
Hearing the word “return,” Lin Yanyu subconsciously recalled their previous night’s “restraint,” blushing and stammering, “Nothing for now… I’ll tell you later.”
Before she finished, a hand brushed her tail from below, warmth pressed against her side, and she suddenly toppled into Qin Changxin’s arms.
“Can’t think of it, or don’t dare to?” Qin Changxin asked softly while controlling their flight.
“Feels like you flipped a weird switch…” Lin Yanyu whispered, nestling into her chest. “But a lively young girl is a good thing.”
She was shorter than Qin Changxin, yet leaning in gave her a rare sense of safety. In her past life, she had only protected others and had never been protected herself.
Laughter came from above as Qin Changxin’s arms tightened around her.
Flying swiftly on Wu Yuan Fan, they reached the East Gate of Lianzhou Royal City in less than half an hour.
“Lu Qiuyun is still half a quarter-hour away from the South Gate,” Qin Changxin said after communicating via sword spirit. “Let’s enter the city first.”
Showing their passes to the city guards, they were allowed in smoothly, entering the bustling streets.
“Where do you think they would most likely go?” Lin Yanyu asked softly.
“‘East Boating’ in Lianzhou City is famous. If they didn’t visit their lord, they’d likely go there,” Qin Changxin said, leading Lin Yanyu toward East Boating. “If we don’t find them there, I have no other leads.”
“I don’t know when or through which gate they entered. I couldn’t sense them along the way,” Lin Yanyu said. “Normally, exorcist families like yours would enter through the East Gate, but if they wanted to avoid Xiao Xianyi, they’d choose a less frequented path, like Qingxue Street.”
“Then near the North Gate,” Qin Changxin quickly deduced. “But East Boating is far from the North Gate…”
“Let Lu Miss go to East Boating. We’ll head to the North Gate first,” Lin Yanyu suggested.
The Lu family would not refuse a reasonable request. After coordinating with Lu Qiuyun, Qin Changxin and Lin Yanyu crossed the streets toward the North Gate.
The hour was early, so the streets were mostly empty, with residents buying breakfast or vegetables.
As they walked, Lin Yanyu’s attention was repeatedly drawn to the delicately crafted pastries, but she refrained there was a mission to complete.
The further north they went, the fewer people were around. Only established shops like goldsmiths were open early, and breakfast stalls sold less refined food than on the East Street.
Passing a small wonton shop with missing signboards, Lin Yanyu caught a whiff of Feng Xianchen’s scent.
Exchanging glances, they entered the shop and immediately spotted the two guests inside Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei!
Both wore plain clothes and wooden hairpins, quietly eating small scallion wontons, stacking empty bowls beside them. Even the weak stomached Zhuang Jingwei had three empty bowls.
The elderly shop owner squinted at them, asking slowly, “Today only small wontons, ten per bowl. How many would you like?”
