- Chapter 84 - Journey to Morning Heal Valley
They fed her several blood staunching pills, yet Yun Quexin now in the form of a leopard cat kept coughing up blood, writhing in pain on the soft cushion the two had prepared for her. The bleeding wouldn’t stop.
“The princess has been cursed!” Qin Changxin said gravely after checking her condition. “Until the curse is removed, no treatment will work.”
“Then I’ll remove the curse first.” Lin Yanyu deftly summoned the Floating Axe, letting it search for the source of the curse within Yun Quexin’s body.
Yun Quexin dared not sleep, afraid she would die if she did. She forced her eyes open only to see the sharp axe hovering before her face. Terrified, she burst into tears. “Don’t kill me! I want to go home wuuuu…”
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. The axe won’t hurt you,” Qin Changxin soothed, placing a gentle hand on the blood-matted fur, trying to calm her with soft strokes.
But Qin’s expert “cat-petting technique” only made Yun Quexin more anxious. She flinched away, trembling. “Please don’t… don’t touch me like that…”
Lin Yanyu remembered Yun Quexin had mentioned Yang Hengyu several times earlier. A thought flashed through her mind perhaps he had stroked her fur before torturing her. The thought made her stomach twist. She reached out and pressed Qin’s wrist, shaking her head. “Let’s do as the princess wishes.”
Qin Changxin quickly withdrew her hand. “Forgive me, I overstepped.”
The Floating Axe soon located the curse. As it prepared to strike, Lin Yanyu covered Yun Quexin’s eyes so she wouldn’t see and panic again.
“What are you doing?! Ah, my stomach hurts…” Yun Quexin whimpered under Lin’s grip, but after a moment she felt the cold weight lift from her body. The dark unease that had plagued her heart for days dissipated, leaving only the pain.
When Lin Yanyu retrieved the axe now satiated with the curse’s energy she and Qin Changxin began tending Yun Quexin’s wounds.
By the time the bleeding finally stopped, it was past midnight.
An old woman who’d been sleepless with worry came to their door with a lantern and a pot of hot sweet water.
Lin Yanyu paused her conversation with Yun Quexin at the sound of the knock. Qin Changxin opened the door, thanked the woman, and said apologetically, “The cat’s already asleep she can’t apologize herself…”
“No need.” The old woman handed her the pot and waved her free hand quickly. “As long as you’re all right?”
“We’re fine,” Qin smiled. “We’re used to dealing with the demonfolk seen all sorts of them.”
The old woman nodded repeatedly, murmuring “That’s good, that’s good,” as she let Qin escort her back to her room.
Once the door was closed, Lin Yanyu continued, “When we first met you, you couldn’t speak. Why was that?”
“I believe it was another curse similar to the one you just removed.” Yun Quexin was calmer now, wrapped in bandages, her spirit recovering though her body was weak. Her eyes, however, were bright. “It was my carelessness I didn’t realize when it was cast upon me.”
She stared at the ceiling, anger flickering in her eyes. “If I had known that envoy was the ‘Blood Leopard’ Xiao Xianyi the very one who ravaged the human realm eighteen years ago I would have captured him myself! Damn that man his disguise was flawless. I still don’t know how he and Yang Hengyu pulled it off. Their master-servant blood pact fooled even my sight. I…”
The door creaked open Qin Changxin returning and Yun Quexin’s voice softened. “Now… now there’s nothing I can do. According to you, my body’s already been used by the ‘Blood Leopard’ turned into a cat demon’s vessel… so vile! How dare he do this to a princess?!”
“Please calm yourself, Your Highness.” Qin knelt beside her. “At dawn, we’ll escort you home—and destroy the ‘Blood Leopard’ and his allies.”
Yun sniffled, replying softly, “Fine…” Then she hesitated before mumbling, “Hey, exorcist from the Qin family… could you um massage me again like before?”
“Your wounds need rest. A massage will reopen them and cause pain,” Qin said gently, declining.
Yun looked disappointed but didn’t insist. She only asked them to move her to the bed, then closed her eyes and soon drifted into sleep.
Neither Lin nor Qin felt sleepy. They sat by the window, sorting through Yun Quexin’s story.
“The Face Sealing Array must already be active. Yang Hengyu’s skin changes are likely due to that array not dual cultivation,” Lin murmured. “After taking over a new body, Zhu Wansheng also relied on the array to sustain life. But to power it, they’ll need the souls and flesh of cat demons. We’d better warn Morning Heal Valley tell them to keep their people inside for now.”
Qin nodded, then said thoughtfully, “If Feng Xianchen and Senior Sister Zhuang have already entered the capital and been placed in guest quarters by the king or the false princess how can we meet them?”
Lin was silent for a few seconds. “Lu Qiuyun shouldn’t have entered yet. We can find her first.”
“But Feng Xianchen and Senior Sister Zhuang are in danger Lu Qiuyun isn’t!” Qin protested. “With Xiao Xianyi aided by Zhu Wansheng, turning them into puppets will be easier than in the last timeline!”
At that, Lin recalled the vision her darker self had once shown her Feng Xianchen losing her mind under Xiao’s control, killing Zhuang Jingwei, then dying by Qin’s corrupted blade.
She sighed, taking the teacup from Qin’s tense grip and setting it gently on the table.
“If we can’t contact them, we can only trust them and move faster toward our destination,” Lin said. “The rain’s stopped. If you’re not tired, we can travel through the night with the princess.”
Qin knew Lin was trying to accommodate her and, after a sip of the sweet water, decided firmly, “Let’s go to Morning Heal Valley first. I trust them.”
Fifteen minutes later
The old woman, still restless, heard footsteps again. She lifted her lantern and found Lin and Qin preparing to leave.
“Granny, we must go,” Lin said quickly. “This cat is gravely injured we’re going to Morning-Heal Valley to find the ‘Cat Immortal’ you mentioned.”
The woman looked at the limp leopard cat in her arms and, seeing its labored breathing, said, “Then go save her quickly!”
“Thank you, Granny!” Lin bowed. “We’ve left you some protective talismans on the table keep them with you for a few days!”
The woman watched them leave the courtyard. Returning inside, she found the talismans indeed on the table weighted down with enough silver to feed her for half a year. Tears welled in her eyes.
The rain had long stopped. Qin guided her spirit fan Wuyuan Shan, gliding silently over the river toward Morning Heal Valley.
Cats preferred the night, and both women knew they would find the valley’s ruler awake at this hour.
But as they reached the valley’s entrance, a fresh stench of blood wafted toward them so strong it woke Yun Quexin from her dreams.
“Cough what is this place?!” she gasped. “A slaughterhouse?”
“Heh, hardly.”
The voice that answered was female but not Lin’s or Qin’s.
Lin immediately tensed, stepping protectively in front of Qin. Ahead, in the dark, dozens of eerie green cat eyes gleamed.
“The Valley Lord was right,” the unseen woman said coldly. “There are many human hunters tonight. We just killed a few, and now more arrive.”
“Don’t misunderstand we’re not hunters,” Lin said firmly. “I am Xuanlin, heir to the Demon Realm, sent by my mother to warn you!”
She summoned demonfire into her palm, letting its aura spread a sign of her royal blood.
For a few moments, there was only silence. Then the woman’s voice returned: “Since it’s a noble guest from the Demon Realm light the lamps and welcome them!”
Torches flared. Before them lay dozens of human corpses.
At their head stood a cat demon in a teal robe trimmed with white fur. Her eyes were cold, showing no deference.
“We came only to warn you,” Lin said loudly. “The ‘Blood Leopard’ Xiao Xianyi roams Lianzhou, killing cat demons to fuel his Face Sealing Array. For your safety, stay within the valley for at least half a month don’t venture outside.”
“That’s all?” The teal-robed cat demon narrowed her eyes and, as they turned to leave, flicked a hooked claw toward Qin Changxin’s shoulder!
Lin’s instincts screamed danger. She swung the Floating Axe just in time metal clashed with a sharp clang, and the claw dropped to the ground.
“What is the meaning of this?” Lin demanded. She hadn’t expected to be attacked for delivering a warning.
“The demon princess may leave but the human exorcist cannot,” the teal robed cat said coldly. “You claim the ‘Blood Leopard’ harms demons but have exorcists not done the same?”
Exorcists had distinct uniforms her recognition of Qin’s rank was immediate.
“She has never harmed a demon!” Lin shouted, furious. “The two are nothing alike!”
“If she bears no hatred for us, why become an exorcist at all? Why take demons as her servants?” the cat pressed. Seeing Lin about to reply, she added, “You can’t answer for her. Let her speak.”
Yun Quexin, still weak but wide awake now, sneered. “Some demons die young for a reason mindless prattle and endless pestering! Truly insufferable!”
Her mockery inflamed the gathered cat demons the air grew taut with hostility.
Lin grimaced, regretting ever coming here. Realizing a fight was inevitable, she shoved the cat into Qin’s arms and readied herself for battle
But then, an androgynous male voice drifted from the shadows:
“Eighteen why are you harassing innocent travelers instead of patrolling as ordered?”
