- Chapter 83 - The Princess of Lianzhou
When Lin Yanyu shouted angrily, the “cat,” which had been arching its back and hissing, suddenly shrank down in fear. It tried to dart back into the darkness, but before it could turn around completely, a spirit-binding rope had already wrapped tightly around it.
“This… this is the demon body of the ‘Blood Leopard’?!” Qin Changxin stared at the “cat” Lin Yanyu had grabbed, utterly disbelieving.
“It’s only a materialized projection a manifested body in the form of a leopard cat,” Lin Yanyu said, pressing a sleep spell on the small creature. She then took out a piece of fabric that could block scents and wrapped the cat securely. “Most likely, it’s a tail or some other body part infused with demonic essence.”
“What was it doing sneaking into the village like this? And how did it get so badly injured?” Qin Changxin was baffled. Even in her memories of her past life, there was nothing like this.
Lin Yanyu shook her head. Seeing that the rain was coming down harder, she pulled Qin Changxin along to find shelter.
The villagers here seemed to love cats. When an old woman opened the door and saw that Lin Yanyu was a cat demon, she eagerly invited them in, insisting on heating water for a bath. Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin tried to refuse, but couldn’t dissuade her.
“We still need to travel on once the rain stops, we’ll leave. You really don’t have to go through all this trouble,” Qin Changxin said awkwardly after they sat down.
“Nonsense! If not for the cat spirits’ blessings, this old woman would’ve starved to death long ago!” The old woman smiled, pouring them green bean tea with a regional accent. “It’s getting late anyway. You’re just young girls stay the night and head into the city tomorrow.”
“Then thank you very much.” Lin Yanyu accepted easily she had matters to discuss with Xiao Xianyi’s manifested form anyway. Seeing Qin Changxin’s uncertain look, she smiled, blew on the tea, and ate the soaked beans and sesame, saying sincerely, “This tea is delicious.”
The old woman beamed at the compliment and began to chat happily. She kept praising the “cat spirits” of Chenyu Valley and even invited Lin Yanyu to visit, saying all the cats there were gentle and kind.
But while Lin Yanyu replied politely, her thoughts were elsewhere in the book, Chenyu Valley had been almost entirely slaughtered by Xiao Xianyi. Her hand clenched beneath the table.
Soon, the hot water was ready, and the old woman urged them to bathe and chase off the cold.
Qin Changxin felt awkward using someone else’s bath bucket, but Lin Yanyu said, “I’ll help you wipe off the moisture then that’ll do just as well.”
While they were bathing, the cloth-wrapped bundle containing Xiao Xianyi’s manifested body was left in the guest room.
Though Lin Yanyu’s sleep spell was strong, the manifested body carried Xiao Xianyi’s demonic energy. It soon dissolved the spell, tore open the cloth, and unable to escape the binding rope wriggled like a “caterpillar-cat” toward the door, mewling loudly.
Its cries quickly drew the old woman’s attention. When she opened the door, she saw a beautiful, bloodied cat bound tightly in ropes, its leg injured. Shocked and distressed, she knelt and began untying it.
The leopard cat looked up pitifully, its eyes wide and wet, all traces of its earlier feral red glow gone.
“Oh, you poor thing! Who hurt you like this?” the old woman murmured, cradling it gently. Just as she turned to fetch medicine, Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin returned.
The moment the cat saw them, its fur bristled again, ears flat, hissing.
“Calm down, little one, calm down!” The old woman stroked its fur nervously, her gaze on the two girls turning wary. “Girls, why was there a cat like this in your room and so badly hurt?”
A wave of unease washed over Qin Changxin. She blurted, “Grandma, that cat we just found it in the village! Please”
“No one in this village would ever harm a cat! Not even the dogs!” The old woman clutched the cat protectively, taking two steps back. “You’re from outside, aren’t you? Did you catch this cat to sell it at the market?”
The leopard cat even lifted its paw, showing its broken, bloody claws, playing the part perfectly.
“When we found it, it was already like this,” Lin Yanyu said calmly. “You can tell new wounds from old ones, can’t you?”
The old woman’s expression changed. She squinted down to check but before she could, the cat suddenly struck, claw flashing straight for her throat!
Fortunately, Lin Yanyu had anticipated it and caught the paw in time.
The old woman, though poor of sight, had lived her life around cats and could sense their moods. She recoiled in terror, unable to move as Lin Yanyu restrained the cat.
“It .. it’s not one of the ‘cat spirits’!” the old woman cried. “Be careful, girl! It kills!”
Lin Yanyu quickly bound the leopard cat again. It mewled angrily, twisting in defiance.
“It’s probably a trauma response,” Lin Yanyu said quickly. “We’ll treat its wounds, and later it’ll apologize to you.” She nodded subtly to Qin Changxin, who led the frightened old woman away.
Once the door was shut, Lin Yanyu carried the cat to an open space. They locked eyes, and she summoned a hemostatic pill, feeding it to the cat.
Feeling forced, the cat hissed and struggled, but Lin Yanyu flicked the pill straight into its mouth and clamped it shut until it swallowed.
“It’s just a regular hemostatic pill, not poison,” Lin Yanyu said, wiping her hand dry. “You think it’s a Blood Contract Pearl or Spirit Core?”
The cat lashed its tail furiously which Lin Yanyu caught at once.
Looking near the base of the tail, she frowned. “Wait you’re a girl?”
“You’re the child! I’m already an adult!” the cat snapped and then, shockingly, spoke human words. “Cough, cough… You smell of Yang Hengyu. Where is that wretch? I’ll kill her!”
Lin Yanyu froze, silent for a few seconds, then asked uncertainly, “Are you the Princess of Lianzhou?”
“Yes!” the cat blurted then quickly corrected herself. “No! I … I’m just an injured little kitty…”
“…Do you know whose body you’re in right now?” Lin Yanyu asked, tone turning respectful.
“Of course I do! It’s all Yang Hengyu’s fault!” the cat said indignantly. “She said it’d be fun like this tricked the envoy into offering a demon body and turned me into… cough cough…”
Seeing blood drip from its mouth, Lin Yanyu hurried to transfer spiritual energy into it.
“You… you’re saving… me…” the cat murmured weakly, pain lacing every word. “But you… you carry Yang Hengyu’s scent… why would you…”
“If you keep talking, you’ll die!” Lin Yanyu snapped, unable to hold back her irritation.
The cat obediently fell silent and closed its eyes.
Qin Changxin entered just then and froze at the sight of Lin Yanyu trying to heal the cat.
“She’s not Xiao Xianyi,” Lin Yanyu explained before she could ask. “She called herself ‘this princess’ and… seems a little naive. I think she’s Yun Quexin, Princess of Lianzhou.”
She summarized everything the leopard cat had said.
“But she’s human,” Qin Changxin frowned. “How could she be trapped inside Xiao Xianyi’s manifested body?
