- Chapter 67 - The Seven Day Protection
Qin Changxin hadn’t expected Xuan Lin to be so distraught. She froze for a moment, and when she came back to her senses, she realized she was already holding the little cat in her arms.
“Why are you suddenly asking that?” Xuan Lin’s muffled voice came from her embrace. “Is it… is it because the Blood Leopard is really coming? To kill me?”
Changxin had originally only wanted to witness Xiao Xianyi’s methods, but seeing how the little cat clung to her so affectionately, her heart softened at once.
“You’re right, I know he’s coming.” She hugged Xuan Lin tighter and confessed, “Do you remember how I said a lot of strange things before? The truth is, I’ve already died once… and so have you.”
The cat demon in her arms trembled. Changxin stroked her head gently and spoke softly:
“I don’t know what kind of method the Blood Leopard used, only that he controlled me and then, I killed you. One strike, straight to your heart, where the Soul Locking Incense was sealed…”
“Stop it!” Xuan Lin suddenly interrupted, her voice breaking with tears. “How.. how could he do that?! How could he make you do it?! You went back to the human realm afterward, didn’t you? But my mother went there to take revenge, didn’t she?”
“If I say yes,” Changxin asked, wiping away her tears, “will you be willing to work with me to avoid that fate?”
As she watched tears spill from the cat’s eyes, her heart felt like it was being scratched by sharp claws the pain was unbearable.
This little cat… she was not the same as Yan Yu. Yan Yu had been a trained exorcist, but Xuan Lin, who had lived in the cold forests of the demon realm for eighteen years, was even purer than Changxin herself had once been.
How could she stand by and watch Xuan Lin die again?
“Of course I’ll do it!” Xuan Lin nodded vigorously, clutching Changxin’s sleeve. “How could I let you live all alone! I promised I’d take care of you until you’re buried in the ground, remember wuuuuu…”
Changxin couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. She hugged her tightly and said softly, “Then do as I say. We’ll live on together.”
She still remembered the letter the Lord of Sparrow Feather Island had written to Lin Yanyu, suggesting that if Yanyu ever faced difficulties, she should return to the demon realm for help from her mother. Now that Changxin was in the demon realm even if this was only a dream born from memories that advice should still hold true.
After soothing Xuan Lin, the two went to seek an audience with the ruler of the demon realm.
By chance, the Demon Lord Xuan Qing was preparing to leave the Frosted Forest in a few days to inspect a certain sealed forbidden land. After hearing Xuan Lin’s account, her expression turned grim.
“It seems the Blood Leopard has indeed chosen his timing well and come fully prepared,” Xuan Qing said coldly. “That seal requires my personal reinforcement at regular intervals no one else can replace me. Once I go, I’ll be gone for seven days. And a lot can happen in seven days.”
“Please allow us to accompany you!” Changxin was about to kneel to plead, but a wave of demon energy lifted her upright.
“Tell Ye Yaozhi to prepare your things immediately,” Xuan Qing said, her tone softening. “Normally, I wouldn’t permit Lin’er to leave the Frosted Forest, but since she’ll be traveling with a Purple Lotus-ranked exorcist, I can rest easy.”
“Thank you for your trust!” Changxin replied joyfully but then she remembered that Ye Yaozhi was still under the control of a venomous spell. She quickly added, “My Lady, please examine Ye Yaozhi’s mind. She seems to be under a mind-control incantation I can faintly sense the presence of poison, but I can’t drive it out.”
“What?!” Xuan Qing’s eyes flashed cold. Her figure blurred and vanished, and in the next instant, she returned, dragging Ye Yaozhi by the collar. Before the woman could even speak, Xuan Qing pressed her palm to her forehead.
Changxin was startled by the Demon Lord’s decisiveness. When she saw blood lines appear on Ye Yaozhi’s face and her features twist in pain, she instinctively wanted to cover Xuan Lin’s eyes but her own eyes were suddenly covered first.
“Don’t look,” came Xuan Lin’s voice by her ear. “Let’s go pack Mother will handle it.”
Before Changxin could respond, the cat-girl took her by the hand and led her out of the palace.
“Don’t be afraid,” Xuan Lin said as she released her hand from Changxin’s eyes, then clasped her fingers tightly. “I’ll stay with you the whole time.”
Sensing that Changxin’s hands were still trembling, Xuan Lin thought for a moment, then suddenly turned back into a small black cat and burrowed into her arms. “You said before that you like cats, right? If you pet one, maybe you won’t be scared anymore? Meow”
Changxin stroked the soft ball of black fur in her arms, holding back tears as she walked slowly back to the young mistress’s quarters.
They didn’t have much to pack, and since this wasn’t a trip for leisure but a journey to inspect a seal, Xuan Lin behaved sensibly she didn’t even pack her sketchbooks.
Less than half an hour later, Xuan Qing returned carrying a gray wolf, setting it down and rubbing its head. “There truly was a venomous parasite,” she said. “I’ve purged it completely. But Ye Yaozhi’s demon energy has been depleted in the process. She must remain in beast form for three days to recover. Just in case, take her with you.”
The gray wolf gave a low howl, wobbling as it walked toward Xuan Lin, tail swishing across the floor.
Xuan Lin scooped it up, smiling. “Then let’s leave right away! The sooner we reach the seal, the better!”
And so, Xuan Qing took them in her carriage and headed west, toward a mountain shrouded in white mist.
The journey passed without incident. Changxin kept track of the days, and when that fateful day passed safely, she finally allowed herself to relax.
On the day before they reached the forbidden land, drowsiness overtook her, and she leaned against Xuan Lin’s shoulder to nap. But when she opened her eyes again, she saw Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei’s faces instead.
“Changxin-jie, you’re finally awake!” Feng Xianchen shouted, spinning around to call out, “Sister Lin! Changxin-jie’s awake!”
Zhuang Jingwei placed her fingers on Changxin’s forehead. When she withdrew her hand, Changxin felt a cool sensation between her brows it was a silver needle.
Lin Yanyu appeared soon after, gripping Changxin’s hand anxiously. “How do you feel?”
Changxin stared blankly at the familiar face. “It feels like… I’ve had a very long dream.”
“You’ve been asleep for seven days,” Zhuang Jingwei said as she pocketed the silver needle. “No matter what we tried, we couldn’t wake you. Master was so worried that she sent an urgent letter to Senior Feng Mingchi, asking him to come and perform a ritual that’s what finally brought you back.”
“Please thank Senior Feng Mingchi on my behalf…” Changxin said weakly, her body still drained of strength.
“No need. Just rest for now,” Zhuang Jingwei said automatically, then quickly corrected herself, “Actually, talk with Yanyu for a bit she’s been beside herself with worry. She stayed by your bedside all seven days without sleeping.”
With that, she and Feng Xianchen tactfully withdrew behind the screen, leaving the two alone.
The women looked at each other for a long moment. Before Yanyu could ask anything, Changxin spoke first:
“I saved the little cat from another world.”
Yanyu blinked in confusion. “You mean… in that long dream?”
“Yes.” Changxin’s lips curved into a gentle smile. “She won’t be killed by me again.”
