- Chapter 66 - Cause and Effect in Dreams
After hearing that, Lin Yanyu who had “suddenly turned bald” was shocked.
“You were touching my clothes!”
“Clothes?” Qin Changxin asked in confusion.
“Yes, I wasn’t shaved bald.” Lin Yanyu sighed and placed Qin Changxin’s hand on her sash. “Feel it it’s really fabric. I just overate, and my belly stretched out the folds. I’m in human form now, not a cat…”
Before she could finish speaking, Qin Changxin suddenly tugged on the sash, and Lin Yanyu’s outer robe flew open.
Lin Yanyu: “??!”
Seeing the young girl holding the sash and moving closer, Lin Yanyu instinctively covered herself, raised her hand to signal “stop,” and said quickly, “You’re drunk don’t get any funny ideas!”
“Ah?” Qin Changxin’s voice drew out, her slightly flushed eyes blinking as she stared for a few seconds, then unfolded the sash. “Sorry… I… I’ll tie it back for you…”
There was no way Lin Yanyu would let her do that who knew what sort of binding play that might turn into? She hurriedly snatched the sash back. “No, no need! I’ll do it myself!”
Qin Changxin made a soft hum, then suddenly grabbed Lin Yanyu’s sleeve and leaned weakly onto her. Just as she was about to speak, her fingertips brushed against the blood stained white jade pendant hanging from Lin Yanyu’s waist.
Her whole body jolted as though struck by lightning. Her eyes closed, and she went limp, collapsing like soft mud.
Feeling the weight of the girl pressing down on her, Lin Yanyu sighed helplessly.
She hadn’t expected the girl’s tolerance to alcohol to be this bad just a few sips, and she was completely drunk. Worse than last time, even.
Feeling both exasperated and sympathetic, Lin Yanyu quickly tied her sash, sat Qin Changxin upright, cast a sleep charm, and began detoxifying the alcohol.
This time, she was already experienced. With practiced ease, she guided the water-element spiritual energy within Qin Changxin’s body, gently dissolving the effects of the wine.
Qin Changxin fell into a dream again.
When she realized she was lying beside Lin Yanyu, their hands clasped together, she smiled faintly.
She remembered this dream from that previous time she got drunk at the family banquet. In that dream, she and Lin Yanyu had shared a night of passion, and she had been the one taking advantage.
“I’m almost of age,” she murmured softly as she looked at Lin Yanyu’s sleeping face. “When I am, it’ll be your turn.”
The cat demon before her stirred, lashes trembling slightly, and slowly opened her eyes.
“The master servant blood bond lasts for life. If you want to return, it must be broken otherwise, there’s only one way out: death.” Lin Yanyu met her gaze for a moment, then said in a chilling tone, “If you wish to return to the human realm, you’ll have to kill me.”
Qin Changxin’s smile froze.
“Can’t do it, can you?” Lin Yanyu grinned, pulling her hand and pressing it to her own abdomen. “The Soul-Locking Incense is right here. All you need is one stab, and you’ll be free. If you can’t do it, I can help you.”
“But… the Soul Locking Incense was already taken by Senior Song Yan,” Qin Changxin said, shocked but still calm. “Besides, I won’t break our bond, and I’ll never kill you! Aren’t we… already back in the human realm?”
“What nonsense are you saying, my little beauty?” Lin Yanyu asked, gently stroking the back of her hand, her tone puzzled. “You’re clearly in the sleeping hall of the demon realm’s young lord!”
The words terrified Qin Changxin. She quickly yanked her hand free and bit her lip hard, hoping the pain would wake her up.
But there was no pain only shallow nail marks left on her skin.
“What are you doing?” Lin Yanyu jumped, grabbed her hands in alarm, and gently rubbed the nail marks. “I was only teasing, and you took it seriously…”
Then her voice softened. “But… forcing a blood bond with you was my fault. I thought that whole ‘lifelong bond’ thing was a myth. If you really wish to return to the human realm, I’ll still let you kill me.”
Since she couldn’t wake up, Qin Changxin went along and asked, “Then tell me why should I kill you?”
“Because we formed a master servant blood contract. I’m your master now.” Lin Yanyu obediently answered, her cat ears folding down. “If you go back just like this, you’ll be branded as one who ‘colluded with the demon realm’ the exorcists will execute you!”
Now Qin Changxin was the confused one. “How are you my master? Weren’t you the one who volunteered to be my demon guard?”
“Nope!” Lin Yanyu shook her head and smiled. “I’m the young lord of the demon realm! How could I possibly lower myself to be a demon servant for a human exorcist?”
She pulled Qin Changxin back into her arms, rubbed against her, and said softly, “You must’ve had a weird dream and can’t tell dream from reality. But don’t worry even if you don’t want to go back to the human realm, I’ll keep you and take care of you for life. Even after you die, I’ll guard your grave.”
“You said… I can’t tell dream from reality?” Qin Changxin murmured.
But she had already confirmed this was indeed a dream.
So why did it feel so real? As if she had truly lived through it? Just like that dream a few days ago.
But… she also remembered dreaming that she had killed the young lord, Xuanlin more than once, even. Could this be her memories from before their falling-out?
Meeting the cat’s gaze in her arms, Qin Changxin’s thoughts whirled. Eagerly, she wanted to see what happened next.
But time in the dream moved at a normal pace. Even if she closed her eyes and truly slept within the dream, only a few hours would pass when she woke again.
“You’re awake now, aren’t you?” The voice beside her no, Xuanlin’s voice spoke softly. “Come help me read, will you? My soul is incomplete; I can’t focus without you guiding me.”
So Qin Changxin opened her eyes. A thin storybook was held before her. Xuanlin lay sprawled on the bed, wagging her cat tail playfully like a puppy.
She opened the book and saw that it was a simple children’s tale. Her gaze drifted toward the cabinet by the bed, stacked with picture books.
So… the little cat couldn’t read pure text because her soul was incomplete she could only understand stories with pictures?
“How do you want me to guide you?” Qin Changxin asked.
“The usual way,” Xuanlin replied. “You read aloud, and point to each word as you go. When I think I’ve remembered the story, I’ll read it back to you.”
“But that means you’re just memorizing what I read,” Qin Changxin reminded her.
“Hmm, I guess you’re right?” Xuanlin frowned, curled up, and sighed. “If only my soul could return on its own. Mother cut off her own tail to mend my soul, but it’s not truly mine. It’s just a patch… I can’t even read properly, let alone help her review official scrolls.”
She paused, then added, “I heard my other mother knows a soul-recalling spell, but I’ll never see her again. Mother promised her that I’d never leave the demon realm for the rest of my life.” Another sigh. “You were right last night if I became your demon guard, you could take me to the human realm. Maybe one of your Silver Lotus exorcists could help me find my lost soul.”
“You really want to go to the human realm?” Qin Changxin asked instinctively.
“I heard it’s livelier than the demon realm,” Xuanlin said, hugging her pillow and lying on her back, staring up at the canopy. “At least it used to be. Mother says that eighteen years ago, before that great war between humans and demons, our realm was still bustling cities, streets, beautiful buildings. They were all built by the former ruler of the demon realm, Xuanlong Yunxi. Mother says she failed to protect them but that wasn’t her fault.”
Her tone shifted; hatred flickered in her eyes as she clenched the pillow. “Once my soul is whole again, I’ll avenge her! I’ll find that traitor, the ‘Blood Leopard’ Xiao Xianyi, and drag him back from the human realm! Mother told me recently he has a sword that can tear open the boundary between worlds without leaving a trace. No one knows where he found it. When he controlled Mother back then, he fused the sword into her claws so when she accidentally slashed open the barrier, it looked like her fault…”
Qin Changxin’s eyes darkened. She quietly listened, occasionally offering comforting words.
When Xuanlin finally grew tired of talking, Qin Changxin patted the storybook lightly and asked, “Do you still want to read?”
“Yes!” Xuanlin eagerly tossed aside her pillow, crawled over on hands and knees, and rubbed her furry cat ears against Qin Changxin’s chin, purring, “Read to me, meow”
This dream didn’t shift scenes. After uncovering bits of truth, Qin Changxin stopped trying to wake and simply stayed with Xuanlin, patiently waiting for that day the day she would “kill the cat.”
By her reckoning, it wasn’t far now.
The dream Xuanlin’s personality differed slightly from the real one who had abducted her to the demon realm but after a few days of questions, Qin Changxin learned the reason. That day, Xuanlin had read a storybook and deliberately imitated the character’s behavior, which led her to kidnap Qin Changxin. Afterwards, the demon realm’s ruler had given her a severe beating, and Xuanlin had already apologized.
But since the master–servant blood bond was sealed, the ruler couldn’t bring herself to kill her own daughter just to save a single human exorcist.
And as long as the bond remained, even if Qin Changxin returned to the human realm, she wouldn’t survive.
So she stayed in the demon realm raising a cat, reading books.
And, over time, affection grew between them.
When the ruler went on inspection trips outside Hanse Forest, they would lock the palace doors and secretly reenact the “scenes” from those storybooks.
As the fated day drew near, Qin Changxin seized a quiet moment alone with Xuanlin and asked seriously,
“If the ‘Blood Leopard’ knew that the Blood Stained White Jade was in your possession, would he come to take it?”
Xuanlin choked on her milk, coughing as she wiped her mouth.
“If it’s the Blood Leopard, he wouldn’t just take it he’d kill me.”
“Why would he want to kill you?” Qin Changxin’s heart clenched.
“To stir up hatred, of course.” Xuanlin put down the bowl, her tone calm, almost resigned. “Think about it if I die by his hand, Mother will invade the human realm for revenge. The truce from eighteen years ago will be broken by her, not them. The exorcists will strike back. That’s exactly the chaos the Blood Leopard wants.”
“And what if he controlled me to kill you?” Qin Changxin pressed.
Xuanlin froze, her expression turning grave.
“Then Mother would probably make the entire human realm die with me.”
After a long silence, she murmured, her voice tinged with sorrow,
“After all, I’d have died at the hands of a human exorcist someone who was so close to me, close enough to share a bed with me… and yet, she still didn’t spare me.”
