- Chapter 54 - The Unspoken Nightmare
Despite Lin Yanyu being unable to bear the ticklish sensation on her paws, she still placed her paw pads in Qin Changxin’s palm and said, “Then pinch them.”
Thus, Qin Changxin was able to hold her cat paws, running her thumb over the fur on the back of the paws, happily kneading them.
Lin Yanyu leaned into her embrace, enduring the ticklish sensation from her paw pads. Suddenly, she felt a little tempted to transform into human form. If she did that, the little girl would likely feel embarrassed while touching her feet.
But she only dared to think about it. If she actually did it, she might end up feeling awkward herself. After all, the little girl was already well-read in picture books a “seasoned driver” of sorts and might think of turning the paw massage into something else entirely upon seeing her bare feet.
Just imagining it made Lin Yanyu shiver, so she obediently remained in her cat form, accepting the foot massage.
Qin Changxin was slightly nervous when she first made the request, but seeing that the “cat” only struggled a little at the beginning and then relaxed completely, she felt reassured. After massaging the hind paws briefly, she moved on to the front paws.
Lin Yanyu quietly calculated the time in her mind. Feeling it was about right, she gently wriggled out of her embrace and hopped onto the bed, lying down and holding her paws. She asked, “Besides participating in the island purification and investigating the waters, is there anything else you want to do?”
“I want to know if there are still traces of Xiao Xianyi on this island,” Qin Changxin said, lowering her eyes to the black cat resting on the white bed, her voice serious. “Whether it’s his aura or his informants, I want to know if he really left.”
“I’m curious too. But if we leave the main group to investigate, won’t it cause panic among the other exorcists?” Lin Yanyu asked.
“The self-preservation ability of Zitan rank exorcists is extremely strong. Even if acting alone, no one would find it unusual,” Qin Changxin shook her head, then reached out to cup the cat’s head with both hands. “However, I don’t have much experience. I’ll rely on your guidance along the way, Young Master.”
“No problem, my little master,” Lin Yanyu deliberately changed her tone and buried her face in Qin Changxin’s palm, muffling her voice: “The exorcists in Ningzhou are unreliable. Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei are descendants of major exorcist families they should act as the backbone at times like this. If we go out to investigate Xiao Xianyi, we can’t bring them along. As for the… silly wolf… I mean, my wolf-demon maid…”
“Bring her along,” Qin Changxin said. “Previously, Sister Zhuang mentioned that unowned demon attendants, especially those weak in combat, are often bullied. It’s not reassuring for Ye Yaozhi to stay among so many exorcists.”
“She’s not really that weak in combat,” Lin Yanyu muttered. “But compared to Zitan rank exorcists, she’s far behind. Since you’re willing to let her come with us, let’s call her before we depart.”
Qin Changxin nodded. “Hmm.” She glanced at the sky outside and asked, “When shall we depart?”
“After nightfall, it might be dangerous on the island. Humans and weaker demons usually avoid going out at that time,” Lin Yanyu said, twitching her cat ears and squinting. “But I personally enjoy running around in the forest at night.”
“Tonight?” Qin Changxin seemed surprised. “You’re clearly already tired…”
“I’m fine. I just haven’t been active like this for a long time.” Lin Yanyu stretched her paws, yawned, and slowly moved to lie on her legs. “A bit of activity will be good. If you’re worried, I can take a short nap.”
Then Qin Changxin scooped her into her arms, and they both collapsed onto the soft bedding.
“Let’s talk tomorrow,” Qin Changxin’s voice sounded from above. “I’m already tired. I need four hours of sleep to recover.”
Lin Yanyu made a low hum, noticing how the little girl liked to shoulder responsibility herself—perhaps realizing that persuading her to rest was futile.
“Then let’s sleep.” Lin Yanyu transformed into human form, pulled the blanket over them, and covered them.
Qin Changxin, caught off guard, realized only afterward that the cat-demon hugging her was now pressing extremely close. The warmth of her breath brushed against her neck.
The little girl’s heartstrings were immediately plucked. She instinctively leaned down, nudging the cat ears, then gently nipped the tips.
“You… always pick the sensitive spots on demons!” Lin Yanyu complained softly, feeling the warmth on her ears, and touched her forehead to Qin Changxin’s chest.
Perhaps because Qin Changxin often used wraps, Lin Yanyu hadn’t felt the softness typical of someone her age but she didn’t mind. She remained in this position, resting her head in Qin Changxin’s arms.
“But you’ve never said ‘I dislike it,’” Qin Changxin said, finally relaxing.
“Hmm?” Lin Yanyu responded.
“From the beginning, you let me touch your demon form at will,” Qin Changxin said. “Now that we’re familiar, whether I nibble your cat ears or pinch your paw pads, you seem completely unbothered. Even when you complain a little, you’re not opposed at all.”
She paused, then firmly added: “You even seem to enjoy it.”
Lin Yanyu: “…”
She really didn’t feel anything particular. To her, her demon form and human form were distinct. As a cat, she enjoyed being held and petted. But in human form, she would never allow anyone to touch her, especially sensitive areas like ears or tails.
Of course, the little girl was an exception. Anything a girlfriend wanted to do was allowed, especially when Lin Yanyu voluntarily gave her this privilege.
Understanding what Qin Changxin meant, she reassured her: “Only you can do this. When did I ever let Feng Xianchen touch my fur?”
“That’s true.” Qin Changxin smiled in satisfaction, extinguished the bedside lamp, and closed her eyes while embracing Lin Yanyu.
Though Lin Yanyu was tired, she couldn’t sleep soundly. They had safely passed the first major mission. According to the original story, Xiao Xianyi shouldn’t appear on Que Ling Island, but intuition told her that a plot twist might still occur.
She remembered fighting a bird demon in Ningzhou. That bird demon had cursed her: “Damn cat demon! You’ve ruined our plan again.” This suggested that another cat demon had caused trouble before her, disrupting Xiao Xianyi’s plans.
Who could it have been?
Searching the original owner’s memories, Lin Yanyu found that the original owner had never encountered cat species besides Xuanmao. Han Sesen once had other cat demons, but due to violating the demon lord’s territory and breaking peace rules, they were either exterminated or exiled to perilous borderlands. Ye Yaozhi’s orange cat fur cloak came from the demon lord taking it from the clan leader of the Orange Cat Tribe.
She sighed at how little the original owner knew of the world. But there was no way around it; based on the original memories, even with the White Jade of Blood, the original owner couldn’t leave Han Sesen without the demon lord’s permission and thus couldn’t obtain information outside it unless a demon willingly told her.
Lost in thought, Lin Yanyu gradually fell asleep.
Perhaps due to exhaustion, she had a strange dream.
She dreamt of the night she made a pact with Qin Changxin, but instead of transforming into her demon form to snuggle, she forcibly smeared her blood on Qin Changxin’s forehead like the original story, becoming her master.
Lin Yanyu was stunned. She found herself unable to control her actions or words, only able to watch “herself” pick up the bound Qin Changxin and walk toward the inner quarters, speaking lines from the original story.
“Why are you crying? This young master has never been so good to anyone!”
“You’re now my servant; you belong to me. If I have a pot of ribs, you get a piece too.”
“Look closely, you really are a beauty. Such delicate skin and flesh, too good for chores better stay by my side to serve me.”
Lin Yanyu: “…This sounds like a bully taking advantage of a young girl without realizing it!”
She remembered what the original Xuanlin Young Master did to Qin Changxin and didn’t want to see it again, nor experience it herself. She tried to escape the dream.
Yet the scene shifted, and she saw herself lying on her side on the bed while Qin Changxin sat beside her.
“I won’t lie with you.”
Qin Changxin’s cool voice was tinged with helplessness. “I won’t. If you insist on mimicking the picture book, I’ll probably just end up hurting you.”
“That’s fine, young master can teach me!” Lin Yanyu heard herself say. “You’ve learned many spells, right? Some swordsmanship too? Treat the picture book as a sword manual and practice three or five times; you’ll get it.”
“I don’t…”
“Stop talking nonsense!” Lin Yanyu pulled Qin Changxin down and opened a picture book, placing it between them. “Learn quickly!”
Lin Yanyu’s head ached, yet she couldn’t stop looking.
She saw the cover neatly inscribed with: “How to Raise a Soft, Cute, and Spoiled Cat Master.”
The symbol even came with the book.
Lin Yanyu: ???
Wait, this symbol and these terms aren’t even from this era!
She rubbed her eyes. When she tried to look again, darkness fell, and she heard Qin Changxin calling in her ear: “Yanyu… Yanyu…” in a panicked voice.
“Yanyu, wake up.” Sleepily, Lin Yanyu responded, yawning as she opened her eyes to see the little girl sitting beside her. She shivered, recalling the dream where she carried Qin Changxin toward the inner quarters with cold, vengeful eyes.
“Why are you shivering?” Qin Changxin asked, surprised, then softly, “Did you have a nightmare?”
“No, just a gust of cold wind,” Lin Yanyu mumbled, not wanting to admit she had a nightmare, to avoid Qin Changxin asking more.
Qin Changxin quickly held her, tucked in the blanket, and asked again, “Is the wind gone?”
“Yes, thank you.” Lin Yanyu hugged her back, resting her forehead on her chest. “Why did you call me suddenly? You didn’t plan to get up.”
“I had a nightmare,” Qin Changxin admitted, embarrassed. “I just wanted to call you. Then it wasn’t so scary.”
“What dream?” Lin Yanyu asked instinctively.
“I dreamed…” Qin Changxin almost said it but quickly shook her head. “Never mind. It’s not a good dream. Talking about it would ruin the mood.”
“Oh, then just forget it.” Lin Yanyu stroked her heart, humming a tune: “Purring, purring, Changxin can’t be scared”
Qin Changxin smiled faintly, lowering her eyes to her, feeling a subtle pain in her heart.
She wouldn’t tell the cat demon that she dreamed of killing her. In the dream, she pierced Yanyu with a sword, watching her soul slowly dissipate.
