- Chapter 53 - Jealous for the First Time
Watching the gray wolf obediently return, Qin Changxin clenched the spirit-binding ropes with both hands and reached out to her with the other two, remaining fully alert.
She was worried that the poison might suddenly act up, causing Ye Yaozhi to lose control and attack her.
The gray wolf, covered in the ropes, walked up to Qin Changxin, glanced at the hands reaching toward it, and, seeing that Lin Yanyu’s gaze was calm, rubbed its head against Qin Changxin’s palm with a low “woo” sound, wagged its fluffy tail twice, behaving just like a domesticated puppy.
“Good girl.” Qin Changxin gently patted the wolf’s head, then turned to Lin Yanyu.
Lin Yanyu, holding her floating axe, stood nervously beside Ye Yaozhi, who was still in her wolf form, but she no longer raised the axe at her.
Qin Changxin’s earlier words when coaxing the wolf back had reminded her that, since they were companions, they should trust each other. She was immune to the poison, while Ye Yaozhi was in a different situation.
So the three of them stood by Ye Yaozhi, observing her body for any changes.
“Young master, your temper has softened considerably,” Ye Yaozhi suddenly said after a quiet moment. “Is it because of the young master’s wife?”
Only then did Lin Yanyu realize that she had changed drastically from the original protagonist. If the original had been here, she probably would have been scolded and sent to drink river water before Ye Yaozhi even requested to be tested with poison.
Fortunately, except for Ye Yaozhi, no one knew the original protagonist, and because Ye Yaozhi had lost two periods of memory, she automatically interpreted Lin Yanyu’s unusual behavior as a change made consciously after arriving in the human world.
Since Qin Changxin had publicly “come out” twice, Lin Yanyu no longer corrected the term “young master’s wife” and cheerfully replied, “Yes, since your young master’s wife is such a good person, I naturally followed her lead, and my previous bad habits have disappeared.”
Upon saying this, she heard Ye Yaozhi giggle softly, a sound both pleased and happy.
“If the demon lord saw your change, she would certainly be happy,” Ye Yaozhi said quietly.
“Let’s not show it to mother just yet.” Lin Yanyu gestured for Ye Yaozhi to lie down and expose her back, checking for any wing-like mutations.
Ye Yaozhi had recently eaten the bodies of two mutated bird demons and had been poisoned, causing her to faint. But Lin Yanyu found no signs of mutation in her demon body not even two mutation marks. She reasoned that it must have been the antidote Yang Hengyu had given Ye Yaozhi that prevented the transformation.
But why would Yang Hengyu give Ye Yaozhi an antidote? And why take her to the island for herbs?
For some reason, Lin Yanyu felt that this version of Yang Hengyu had slightly more conscience than the one in the book.
After about twenty minutes, seeing that the gray wolf showed no abnormality, Lin Yanyu finally relaxed.
She put away her floating axe and instructed Ye Yaozhi to shift into human form, then told Qin and Feng, “I have a bad feeling. I don’t think Yang Hengyu will obediently go to the Xuan Academy.”
“I feel the same,” Qin Changxin frowned. “But if she doesn’t go there, where else would she go?”
“As the eldest daughter of the Qin family, perhaps persuading various exorcist factions across the states…” Lin Yanyu began, then hesitated, realizing she had no solid evidence for her guess. She stopped herself and said, “Anyway, we need to find a way to monitor her. My intuition has always been accurate; I really don’t want to take risks.”
“But she’s been gone for two days already. Where can we track her?” Feng Xianchen asked.
Lin Yanyu looked at Ye Yaozhi: “Try using the master-servant blood contract to sense your master.”
Ye Yaozhi nodded, closed her eyes, but after a short while, held her head in pain, frowning: “Forgive Yaozhi, I am powerless. Activating the blood contract gives me a splitting headache.”
“Looks like she really doesn’t want any connection with you…” Feng Xianchen muttered quietly, “I don’t understand why that crazy woman made a blood contract in the first place if she didn’t want ties with you.”
Qin Changxin massaged Feng’s head, sternly saying, “It’s done. Stop reopening old wounds!”
Then she turned to Lin Yanyu: “Whatever Yang Hengyu wants to do, we can’t know her whereabouts for now. Let’s focus on solving the issues on Que Ling Island first.”
Lin Yanyu wanted them to stay while she went with Ye Yaozhi to find Yang Hengyu, but she realized she had just confirmed her relationship with Qin Changxin, and the island was still dangerous. Even knowing Ye Yaozhi was very capable, she could not bring herself to leave the girl alone.
So she nodded: “You’re more familiar with this place. I’ll follow your lead.”
Qin Changxin seemed relieved and ruffled her hair, praising warmly: “Good kitty.”
But the moment her hand touched hers, Lin Yanyu smelled Ye Yaozhi and Feng Xianchen, feeling an uncomfortable tightness in her chest.
She quickly realized she was jealous. Even demons had a strong sense of possession, and she was no exception. She leaned her cat ears against Qin Changxin’s hand and whispered in her ear, tiptoeing close: “Don’t touch any demon’s head besides mine.”
Qin Changxin paused her ear-rubbing for two seconds, then suddenly burst into soft laughter.
She leaned close to Lin Yanyu’s ear and whispered lightly: “Alright, I’ll only rub your cat head from now on.” Then she kissed Lin Yanyu’s earlobe twice.
Since arriving in the human world, Lin Yanyu had kept her cat ears on top of her head and her human ears on the sides, forming a “four-ear” appearance. Qin Changxin kissed her human earlobe, leaving just two marks, and Lin Yanyu felt an electric shiver, both of them letting out a “meow” that was just audible to those present.
Feng Xianchen was shocked, while Ye Yaozhi remained calm as if she had seen it all before.
Qin Changxin felt a little fluttered but remembered other areas still needed purification, so she only gently rubbed Lin Yanyu’s cat ears instead of giving more kisses.
“Ye Yaozhi seems fine. Let’s go to the next two sites.” Feng Xianchen opened the map. “If that white bead is really a purification artifact, once we purify it, we can save the whole island!”
Following paths cleared by the bird demons, they quickly reached the next two water areas. Sure enough, they found white beads buried in the soil along the shore, ready to purify the water bringing relief to the original inhabitants.
“Lin Jie, something feels off,” Feng Xianchen said, staring at the white bead. “If these artifacts exist, why didn’t other exorcists know? Why didn’t the island master mention they could purify the poison?”
“Perhaps the master doesn’t trust exorcists,” Lin Yanyu replied. “Look, both areas were surrounded by poisonous mist ‘Zhenxi poison mist.’ Without the master’s token, ‘Wu Ling,’ there’s no way to approach the water, much less find the buried bead. Even if you found the bead, you couldn’t purify it quickly.”
“True,” Feng Xianchen said, proudly holding the half-white plaque. “Uncle said my mother’s blood is the best medium for purification he’s ever seen.”
“So the island master gave you ‘Wu Ling’ to help you find these beads?” Qin Changxin asked.
“That’s the only explanation,” Lin Yanyu said. Once the white bead’s red glow disappeared, she sealed it and covered it with soil. The master hadn’t told her how to use it beyond flight.
Lin Yanyu could have refined the artifact to extract all its information, but she wanted to return Wu Ling to the master after the events, allowing the island to maintain its natural barrier.
Over two days, they purified five water areas in total. In each, they found two black beads buried in the soil, and using the blood from the two white plaques, they could completely remove the toxins.
“I understand why mother wanted me to find you in the demon world,” Feng Xianchen said, amazed. “Two white plaques alone wouldn’t purify much, but using both together, it works quickly.”
“Maybe these white plaques are a way our mother wanted to prove: ‘As long as we help each other, no problem is unsolvable,’” Lin Yanyu said with a wink, leaving the exact mechanism mysterious, but sounding friendly to the little demons.
The sunset reflected on the shallow channels beside them, bathing the water in soft orange light.
Even with Lin Yanyu and Ye Yaozhi, experienced outdoorswomen, they didn’t linger long in the wild as night approached. They took the collected water samples and returned quickly to their banyan tree residence using the flying artifact.
Back in the room, Lin Yanyu felt tired and changed into her cat form, sprawling on the bed in a relaxed pose.
But soon she felt her hind paws being pinched and opened her eyes to see Qin Changxin massaging her cat paws.
“What are you squatting for?” Lin Yanyu asked, retracting her paws.
“Hmm,” Qin Changxin murmured but continued to massage them.
Lin Yanyu squirmed but was eventually scooped into Qin Changxin’s arms.
“I’m nervous and need to massage cat paws to relax,” Qin Changxin said seriously. “Don’t you want to let me touch your paw pads?”
Lin Yanyu: “…”
She never expected this little girl would use such an excuse to get foot massages.
