- Chapter 55 - Twisted Love
For Qin Changxin, having nightmares had long since become a regular occurrence.
Ever since she was bullied by Yang Hengyu as a child, she would have nightmares. After joining the Kuixuan Academy, if her studies became too stressful or if her teachers deliberately made things difficult for her, she would also have nightmares.
After forming a bond with Lin Yanyu, Qin Changxin had experienced nightmares related to her more than once. Most of the time, the content of the dreams involved her killing Lin Yanyu. When she woke up and saw her obedient and caring little cat, she would feel an overwhelming sense of guilt.
While Lin Yanyu went out to make breakfast for her, Qin Changxin secretly called Yao Yaozhi, who was guarding outside, and asked in a low voice, “If a demon loves another demon to the extreme, would there be thoughts of… killing them?”
Yao Yaozhi had never heard such a question before and appeared bewildered. “Yaozhi doesn’t understand… why would someone want to kill a demon they love?”
“I don’t know either, but the picture book mentioned something like this,” Qin Changxin replied vaguely.
“Oh, the type of demon you’re talking about does exist. It’s usually a powerful demon king with extreme possessiveness,” Yao Yaozhi said, as if recalling something. “Some demon kings, in order to keep their beloved demon with them forever, would kill them, take their bones, horns, or claws, and create a blood-contract artifact to carry with them. In this way, it’s a sort of ‘never apart’ method. However… honestly, this is too twisted. The young master would never use it, so please rest assured.”
After hearing this, Qin Changxin shivered, her mind buzzing.
She didn’t even realize how she had sent Yao Yaozhi out of the room. Once he left, she sat on the edge of the bed, hugging herself in fear.
How could she harbor such a twisted love for Yanyu?!
She must not let Yanyu find out, or… she would definitely be despised…
At the lower level of the banyan tree residence, unaware of how frightened the little girl had been by her own thoughts, Lin Yanyu was adding vegetables to the porridge.
The bird demons had woken up very early. When Lin Yanyu arrived at the kitchen, a lavish breakfast was already prepared, and the birds responsible for transport were moving portions of food into her storage artifact.
Although Lin Yanyu was already familiar with the little girl’s tastes from the original text, she still felt the need to act as if she was offering a choice, so as not to raise unnecessary suspicion. After serving the vegetable porridge, she used their master-servant blood contract to transmit a message:
“Changxin, this morning we have jade shrimp dumplings, mushroom smoked meat noodles, sesame pancakes, dried vegetable flatbreads, and soy milk you can adjust to your taste…”
She looked around and asked, “Which would you like to eat?”
Perhaps not expecting such a question, Qin Changxin was silent for a long moment before replying, “The… flatbread and fried noodles, is that okay?”
Lin Yanyu readily agreed, “Sure. Do you want white sugar-pickled mustard greens with it?”
“Hmm…”
Thinking the little girl’s flustered reaction was likely due to the aftermath of a nightmare, Lin Yanyu pondered whether or not to take her to see Xiao Xianyi so early.
She recalled that in her previous life, when she worked as a professional, she had been raised by a knowledgeable exorcist and could calmly handle even the strangest or scariest situations.
However, the apprentices she brought along then did not have such resilience; she had even seen several who, after only one mission, had to request leave to seek therapy.
Surely, the little girl must be similar her ability to handle stress wasn’t something easily developed.
With that in mind, Lin Yanyu decided not to seek out Xiao Xianyi just yet.
Qin Changxin was very different from the darkened version in the original text; she needed to be guided slowly.
As for Xiao Xianyi… the disturbances on Que Ling Island had already been reported. Any intelligent demon shouldn’t make a move in the near future.
Lin Yanyu finished thinking and reached the room outside the resting quarters.
She nodded to Yaozhi, who was on guard, and was about to enter the room, when he stopped her.
“Young Master, may I tell you something?” Yaozhi asked.
Seeing her anxious expression, Lin Yanyu paused but let him lead her somewhere Qin Changxin couldn’t hear, whispering, “Go ahead. What is it?”
“Did you… say something strange to Changxin?” Yaozhi asked softly.
Lin Yanyu: ?
“What do you mean?” she frowned.
Yaozhi then recounted what Qin Changxin had said.
Lin Yanyu was momentarily speechless. She clicked her tongue, her mood complicated, and said, “Kill the one you love? I’ve never had such twisted thoughts!”
“Yaozhi also thinks you didn’t, so he reassured Changxin,” Yaozhi nodded. “However, with your permission, perhaps you should screen the materials she reads.”
Even if Yaozhi hadn’t mentioned it, Lin Yanyu intended to do so. She didn’t know where the little girl had learned the “picture book deduction technique,” only that someone unexposed to such reading could easily be misled, taking picture books as instruction rather than entertainment.
After thanking Yaozhi, she returned to Qin Changxin.
When Lin Yanyu returned, Qin Changxin was still in a daze. It wasn’t until the fragrant hot flatbread and fried noodles were placed in front of her that she snapped out of it.
“Still thinking about last night’s dream?” Lin Yanyu asked as she pushed the small table forward, sitting beside her. “If you like, you can tell me. In the demon world, they say that if you have a nightmare, you should tell someone as soon as you wake up, so the dream will leave your memory.”
This was really just a way to comfort children frightened by nightmares, but Qin Changxin believed it, gripping the flatbread as she pondered.
Lin Yanyu quickly added, “Of course, if you really don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to.”
“To be honest, I do want to forget some dreams,” Qin Changxin admitted with a slightly forced smile, “but every time I’m about to forget them, I have another dream…”
“It’s okay, I’ve experienced that too,” Lin Yanyu said, stroking her hair to comfort her. “It just means it’s something you really care about. Whether it’s good or bad, just treat them as dreams and forget them when you wake up. Dreams reflect a person’s inner desires and darkness, but they haven’t really happened. Who hasn’t had bad thoughts?”
Seeing Qin Changxin’s furrowed brow relax slightly, her smile softening, Lin Yanyu apologized, “Actually… I lied earlier. I had a nightmare last night I dreamt that when we made our master-servant blood contract, I became your master. Imagine how terrifying that would be!”
Qin Changxin was stunned. A few seconds later, she nodded softly, murmuring, “That really would be terrifying…”
She didn’t finish speaking. When she first met the little cat, her reaction had indeed been intense, both despising the demon and feeling a desire for mutual destruction.
But now… she inexplicably regretted that the cat hadn’t become her master. If she became the cat’s “guard,” she could stay in the demon world and not have to face her father, sister, or the entire Qin family.
Her mother had told her to escape, and all these years she had tried but she never truly escaped her father’s control. Being taken by the cat had brought her a fleeting sense of relief, which was quickly overshadowed by the beliefs instilled by ten years of exorcist training.
She even began to think that if the cat always treated her this well protecting and comforting her, occasionally complaining, yet always attentive, even stroking her ears, tail, paws, or belly then having the cat as her blood contract master might not be bad.
Seeing her suddenly lost in thought, Lin Yanyu lifted a spoonful of vegetable porridge and fed it to her, teasing, “I heard your stomach growl have some breakfast first. We’ll be out on the island all day today.”
Qin Changxin made a small sound of acknowledgment, nervously taking the bowl, “I’ll eat myself.”
As Lin Yanyu lowered her head to eat shrimp dumplings, she could still see the little girl lowering her hand to feel her silent belly.
“Still a pure little girl, as cute as ever,” Lin Yanyu thought to herself.
After breakfast, seeing that it was still early, she realized Feng Xianchen and the others probably hadn’t woken yet. She pulled Qin Changxin along.
“I’ve changed my mind. Let’s focus on building trust and… our bond first. We can’t find Xiao Xianyi now. Acting rashly without knowing the situation isn’t wise.”
Qin Changxin hesitated briefly before nodding. Now that she regarded Lin Yanyu as a senior like a master, if she felt the reasoning was sound, she would comply.
“Then today we’ll purify the water zones,” Lin Yanyu said. “Finish early so you can return to school… I mean, the academy.”
She had always been curious about exorcist academies. Though she had experienced schools in her previous life, the exorcist who raised her had insisted she couldn’t learn much practical knowledge there, so she had stayed home under strict tutelage.
“I see you’re very interested in exorcist schools,” Qin Changxin said with a smile. “Then we must try harder.”
Lin Yanyu thought the little girl was just offering encouragement, but over the next few days, Qin Changxin seemed energized, quickly flying from one water zone to another with her newly learned air manipulation technique.
During the island master’s detox, Lin Yanyu’s group finished purifying all the water zones frequented by the bird demons. As she had expected, there was no trace of Xiao Xianyi.
Even so, Lin Yanyu couldn’t shake her unease.
Her intuition, trained by the exorcist who raised her, had never been wrong. In her previous life, it had repeatedly saved her and her teammates. As long as the unease remained, danger was still lurking nearby.
She patiently waited six days. On the night of the sixth day, just before they were about to leave the island, she suddenly heard a loud crash from the edge of Que Ling Island the area closest to Ningzhou.
Qin Changxin was about to fall asleep when the noise startled her awake. Shaken, she instinctively hugged Lin Yanyu, who was about to go check the situation.
Caught off guard, Lin Yanyu shivered and fell back onto the bed, feeling a mix of frustration and amusement as she pushed the little girl’s hands away, then leaned down and kissed her on the forehead.
“Don’t be afraid. I’ll be back soon.”
