- Chapter 52 - Testing Poison with One’s Own Body
Regarding depression, Lin Yanyu remembered that in her time there were medicines that could cure it, as well as mature treatment methods. But since she wasn’t a medical expert, instead of giving the young girl blind advice, it would be better to find a way to return to the modern world as soon as possible.
She needed to find Xiao Xianyi and seize the Huixing Sword, the weapon capable of tearing through space and time.
After letting the young girl rest briefly, Lin Yanyu went with her to find Feng and Zhuang.
Zhuang Jingwei had also recovered from the effects of staying up late, though fatigue still lingered on her face. When she saw Lin Yanyu and the others, she took out a round, ice blue bead and handed it to Qin Changxin, rubbing her temple: “This is a ‘Poison Seeking Bead.’ It activates only in water and will turn green when encountering poison. Xianchen, go with them. I’ll sleep for another hour.”
“Thank you for your hard work, Senior Sister Zhuang.” Qin Changxin took the Poison Seeking Bead and led the group onward.
Before leaving the Banyan Tree residence, Lin Yanyu called Ye Yaozhi along. The Big Grey Wolf had more experience in the wild and could help protect Qin Changxin and Feng Xianchen in case of danger.
“Where should we start looking?” Feng Xianchen asked after leaving the residence.
Lin Yanyu looked at the map and said, “Let’s start with the eastern water source. The birds last time mentioned that’s roughly where the water can be collected.”
“I still don’t quite understand,” Feng Xianchen hesitated. “Why does Xiao Xianyi need the mentally unstable demons? Could he control them?”
Lin Yanyu paused, then smiled lightly: “Your guess isn’t far off. That leopard indeed has a kind of mind-control ability. The more someone loses their rationality, the more completely they can be controlled.”
Qin Changxin’s gaze shifted sharply. “Eighteen years ago… could it have been Xiao Xianyi who controlled Xuanqing and opened the portal to the demon realm?”
“I don’t know that,” Lin Yanyu said solemnly. “The past is past, and my mother would never tell me the truth. For now, it’s just my speculation. And it’s for this speculation that I came to the human world to investigate.”
“If… I mean, if…” Feng Xianchen hesitated, “if the demon lord really was under Xiao Xianyi’s control, then wouldn’t catching him and asking about the past let us open the barrier and allow peaceful exchanges between the two worlds?”
“…” Lin Yanyu held back a comment on how naive that sounded. “There’s a saying: ‘blood debt must be repaid with blood.’ So many humans and demons died back then. Even after eighteen years, the key to the barrier is still in our hands. Peace isn’t so simple.”
“That said, it’s not entirely hopeless,” Qin Changxin said. “But right now, the immediate task is to solve Que Ling Island’s water problem. If the water is poisoned, the bird demons will eventually abandon the island in search of a new gathering place.”
Lin Yanyu nodded firmly. The bird demon residents of Que Ling Island had indeed been forced to leave after the island lord’s death. They had done nothing wrong they only wanted to live peacefully in their homeland. It was Xiao Xianyi’s arrival that turned the once-vibrant Que Ling Island into wasteland.
The island was densely forested. As they walked along the paths, branches blocked their way.
Ye Yaozhi stepped forward, claws extending from her fingertips, slashing a few branches into pieces and tossing them aside.
“There’s a strong smell of water ahead,” Ye Yaozhi sniffed, warning them.
Lin Yanyu used her spirit-control technique to scout the path and frowned. “There’s a poisonous mist near this river. Try opening your anti-poison barrier. If that doesn’t work, mark the location and have an exorcist familiar with toxins check it later.”
As soon as she spoke, she felt something unusual on her back and hurriedly pulled the Wu Ying (Crow Feather) to her hand.
The feather floated ahead on its own. Lin Yanyu and the others exchanged glances and followed.
As they approached the mist, Qin Changxin made a hand seal. The black aura on the feather flashed, and in an instant, the mist surged toward it.
Lin Yanyu quickly signaled everyone to step back. Only after the Wu Ying absorbed the mist did they dare approach.
“No wonder the island lord gave us a token,” she said, holding the feather. “Turns out it’s a container for poisonous mist.”
“The ‘Zhenxi Poison Mist’ of Que Ling Island is the best in Ningzhou. Without a special tool, it can’t be dispelled,” Feng Xianchen said. “But I remember the island lord said Xiao Xianyi once used a strange sword to break through the poison mist. What kind of sword could do that?”
Lin Yanyu was about to shake her head when Qin Changxin said, “Legend has it there are two divine swords in the world: Xiao Zheng and Huixing. Nothing in the world can break the barriers these swords cannot. Whoever possesses one can tear open the heavens and ascend in broad daylight.”
Feng Xianchen was shocked. “Ascend in broad daylight?! Is that true?”
Lin Yanyu: “…”
Tearing through space-time probably was true she suspected she had been sent through time by the Huixing Sword. But the idea of ascending in broad daylight was a bit ridiculous. If it were real, Xiao Xianyi would have used the Huixing Sword to ascend long ago instead of spreading poison and raising so many puppets among human settlements.
While they talked, Ye Yaozhi had already sniffed ahead, quickly reached the riverside, and transformed into her wolf form, digging a deep hole in the soil.
When Lin Yanyu and the others arrived, they found a pitch-black bead buried there.
“This reeks of blood it must be a container for toxins,” Ye Yaozhi said, pointing but not daring to touch it. “Without the token, no demon would dare cross the poisonous mist to investigate.”
Feng Xianchen hurried forward. Standing by the pit, she summoned the Qin Xue White Jade into her palm and traced a thin “red thread” of blood into the black bead.
“What is this?” Lin Yanyu asked instinctively.
“The White Jade contains blood left by my mother. It can purify such evil artifacts,” Feng Xianchen explained. “Your own White Jade could purify as well.”
“Exorcist blood has a purifying effect?!” Lin Yanyu was skeptical she only remembered seeing that in novels. In her era, spiritual energy was weak, and even cultivators’ blood didn’t contain much purifying power.
Still, she decided to respect the original story logic.
Seeing the red thread wrapping the black bead, she slowly started turning it. The rotation was too slow, so she summoned her half-White Jade, asked Feng Xianchen for the incantation, and drew the blood out, forming another red thread around the black bead.
When the two red threads intersected, they formed a thin layer of blood, wrapping the black bead. The piercing red light enveloped it. In less than ten breaths, the bead had turned into a translucent white pearl.
“Is it my imagination, or does the air feel cleaner?” Feng Xianchen said, greedily sniffing it. “It even smells a bit sweet!”
“What exactly is this?” Lin Yanyu squatted by the pit, staring at the white pearl.
“It might be a special artifact for maintaining water quality,” Qin Changxin said, tossing the Poison-Seeking Bead into the river.
The bead immediately turned green and swam toward the white pearl. After a while, it slowly returned, losing its green color.
“Does that mean purification is complete?” Feng Xianchen asked, surprised. “Let’s hurry to the next water source. If there’s a white pearl here, there must be others nearby!”
Lin Yanyu, however, wasn’t fully convinced. She carefully scanned the area with her spirit energy.
Qin Changxin pulled the bead ashore and stood next to her. “The Poison-Seeking Bead shows no anomaly. This water source is free of toxins.”
“This river is too large. I’m worried there might be residual poison,” Lin Yanyu frowned. “Can I try drinking a little?” she asked quietly.
“No!” Qin Changxin’s face immediately changed as she bent to pull her away.
“Don’t worry!” Lin Yanyu hurried to explain. “I’ve drunk poison tea before. I might be immune to this… you know what ‘immune’ means, right?”
Qin Changxin, half-understanding, watched her cautiously, ready to pull her away.
Lin Yanyu explained the meaning of immunity and pointed to the water. “So… can I drink it now?”
Seeing her hesitation, Lin Yanyu summoned the Floating Axe and placed it nearby. “With the Floating Axe protecting me, you can relax!”
“Why aren’t you moving?” Feng Xianchen asked, confused by their strange struggle.
“Yanyu wants to test the poison herself,” Qin Changxin said softly. “I won’t allow it.”
“But there’s the Floating Axe…” Feng Xianchen hadn’t finished, but felt Qin Changxin glare at her, and obediently fell silent.
“Leave it to me,” Ye Yaozhi said, ignoring the warning, and dashed toward the riverside.
Lin Yanyu didn’t have time to stop her. By the time she reached the wolf, she had already swallowed the water.
Everyone tensed. Lin Yanyu acted quickly, grabbing the wolf by the scruff and pulling it back to the shore.
“This water is poisoned! How could you act on your own?!” she yelled.
“Yaozhi has also taken this poison before,” Ye Yaozhi said calmly. “If the young madam won’t, then I’ll do it in her place.”
“You…!” Lin Yanyu was both angry and anxious. She raised the Floating Axe to hit Ye Yaozhi.
Ye Yaozhi dodged swiftly, leapt to a tree far away.
“You stupid wolf! Come down!” Feng Xianchen shouted, chasing her.
Ye Yaozhi didn’t respond and continued leaping from tree to tree.
“…” Lin Yanyu sighed, regretting bringing her along.
“Are you… are you a monkey?” Feng Xianchen called after her.
Ye Yaozhi didn’t turn her head and kept running. But soon she felt something wrapping around her legs. Looking down, she found herself completely ensnared.
Qin Changxin held the Binding Spirit Rope and approached slowly.
“Don’t run,” she said calmly. “If you consider yourself our companion, don’t make us worry.”
Ye Yaozhi was silent for a moment before finally turning around and walking toward her.
