- Chapter 51 - Hurtful Plot
By the time Lin Yanyu and the others left the sleeping quarters to find the island master, the purification array was already being set up.
Lin Yanyu’s injuries no longer hurt, but Qin Changxin insisted on carrying her. She could only transform back into her black cat form and curl up in the little girl’s arms.
The remaining exorcists froze when they saw Qin Changxin, and then noticed the lazy black cat resting in her lap. Their expressions instantly changed, a mix of fear, anger, resentment, and greed.
To establish a blood contract with such a powerful great demon, who was also the young master of the demon realm, was the lifelong wish of most ordinary exorcists.
Lin Yanyu felt uncomfortable under those gazes and wanted to retort, but Qin Changxin patted her back.
“I’m a bit nervous. Can you nuzzle me?”
Lin Yanyu knew the girl was trying to distract her, so she “meowed” slightly in displeasure but still obediently rubbed against her hand, then against her clothes, pressing her cat ears against Qin Changxin’s chin and neck.
Before long, exorcists from Kuixuan Academy came to lead Qin Changxin to her designated position.
About half a quarter-hour later, Lin Yanyu yawned and noticed two people in white robes entering the array. She couldn’t help but exclaim, “Feng Xianchen and Sister Zhuang are here too?”
“It’s because you two are too conspicuous. You might attract exorcists or demons with ill intentions!” Feng Xianchen removed her veil, pretending to be annoyed. “We’re going back to the academy on a mission anyway; staying here is also a way to gain experience.”
Zhuang Jingwei nodded silently, linked arms with her, and walked toward another direction.
To complete the purification array, nine people had to stand at the nine positions of the array, four inside and five outside.
Lin Yanyu was not familiar with the workings of the array, so when the island master arrived at the center, she jumped out from Qin Changxin’s arms and crouched nearby to guard her. Zhuang Jingwei, exhausted from staying up all night making a simple device to detect toxins, retreated to Feng Xianchen’s side to act as a guardian as well.
The array activated, and nine soft white beams simultaneously struck the island master. Sitting cross-legged with her eyes closed, she appeared calm at first. However, as the white beams grew stronger, her brows furrowed, her breathing quickened, and she trembled all over, blood appearing in her seven orifices.
Using spirit control, Lin Yanyu sensed Xiao Xianyi’s aura constantly leaking from the island master, glowing a glaring red and opposing the purifying white light.
She quickly shielded Qin Changxin with her spiritual energy and shouted, “Watch out for Xiao Xianyi’s aura! Don’t get ambushed!”
Everyone drew a sharp breath. The exorcists guarding the array hurriedly cast defensive spells to protect their teammates.
The island master could not circulate her demonic energy and had to endure the tearing sensation from the collision of the two internal energies. She shivered violently, blood flowing from her orifices.
Seeing this, Lin Yanyu summoned the artifact Wuling and tossed it over. It transformed into a black light, wrapping around the island master to reduce her pain.
The island master gratefully glanced at her, quickly formed hand seals, and Wuling slowly condensed behind her into a needle, piercing precisely into a large acupoint on her back.
The nine exorcists maintaining the array immediately felt the pressure ease. They poured spiritual energy into suppression, and within less than a quarter of an hour, the red aura was fully dispelled.
The array ceased. The island master coughed up black blood, and the black needle on her back withdrew, turning into a black peacock feather that floated back to Lin Yanyu.
“Island Master!” Dr. Yu Zhuo, the woodpecker physician, rushed over with apprentices, carefully placing her on a stretcher to return her to the sleeping quarters.
After the island master left, the exorcists remaining in the array looked grim.
“Young Master Xuanlin, was that truly Xiao Xianyi’s red aura?” an elder from Kuixuan Academy asked Lin Yanyu.
“Yes,” Lin Yanyu replied confidently, transforming back into human form and supporting the slightly exhausted Qin Changxin. “I can recognize it.”
“Ha! We thought ‘Blood Leopard’ was just a nickname used to scare people by the previous generation. We didn’t expect it to be real!” an exorcist from Ningzhou sighed. “The bloodthirstiness in Xiao Xianyi’s aura… how many people must he have killed back then?”
“That may not necessarily be bloodlust,” Lin Yanyu shook her head. “If the anomalies in the island master’s body can absorb more killing intent from other mutated demons, she essentially becomes a vessel for Xiao Xianyi’s stored killing aura. Luckily, we discovered it early. If we had delayed ten days or half a month, we would have had to come to the island to collect the corpses of exorcists and bird demons.”
“Since you came to hunt the ‘Blood Leopard,’ Young Master Xuanlin, do you know his intentions?” an exorcist from Kuixuan Academy asked.
At this, all the other exorcists turned their gaze toward Lin Yanyu.
Lin Yanyu remained calm. “I have some ideas, but information about Xiao Xianyi is too scarce to make a decision. Besides, inhabitants of the demon realm cannot cross into the human realm without permission from the Demon Lord or myself. Surely your forces have far more intelligence than the scraps I possess, right?”
She paused, then continued: “I only know that he never prepares in just one location. Que Ling Island is merely one of his chess pieces. Where his other pieces are… if convenient, you can investigate further. The mutated creatures on Que Ling Island are about to mature; it’s likely other sites are close too.”
“Easier said than done!” an exorcist from Ningzhou grumbled. “If we could accurately track ‘Blood Leopard,’ we wouldn’t have nearly lost Que Ling Island!”
“I’m only offering my opinion,” Lin Yanyu shrugged. “Even if you don’t investigate, I will. Rest assured, I will only use your human forces, never opening the demon realm entrance on my own.”
On the way back to the sleeping quarters, Lin Yanyu, carrying Qin Changxin while in her giant cat form, was deep in thought.
She worried about two things: whether Xiao Xianyi still had spies on the island, and the whereabouts of Yang Hengyu.
In the original timeline, Yang Hengyu was a ruthless lunatic. Lin Yanyu sensed that Yang Hengyu, after having her memories erased and returned by Ye Yaozhi, might act alone either to avoid being a burden or out of feelings for her.
What Yang Hengyu planned whether it was convincing and uniting exorcist forces across the provinces or joining the villain Xiao Xianyi Lin Yanyu did not know. She only knew the goal was to invade the demon realm and avenge her mother.
Qin Changxin, nestled against her, suddenly said, “I regret it. If I had stayed in the demon realm back then, I might have watched you command the demons in combat.”
Lin Yanyu almost tripped over her paws in shock. “If you stayed in the demon realm, Wuyuan Fan would be gone!” she said hurriedly.
“You seem even more concerned about Wuyuan Fan than I am,” Qin Changxin smiled.
“Being a Purple-Tan grade exorcist, staying in the demon realm is trivial,” Lin Yanyu steered the conversation back. “Don’t look at me through rose-colored glasses. I’m very bad. If it weren’t for capturing Xiao Xianyi, I might… I might whimsically make you my servant and lock you in the sleeping quarters. Think carefully if I had done that from the start, what would you have done?”
Qin Changxin pondered, recalling what she might have done if forced into a master-servant blood contract, then fell silent. After a while, she couldn’t help but wrap her arms around the cat.
“You know yourself well,” Lin Yanyu praised. “So, stop overthinking. If you’re interested in the demon realm, once things settle here in the human world, I can take you back.”
“Really?” Qin Changxin lifted her head slightly, eyes shining.
“Since we are nominally Daoist partners, of course I will take you back to meet my mother. If you don’t want to stay home, you can live in the demon realm. I don’t have many true friends there, and a giant sleeping hall with only one cat is too lonely.”
Qin Changxin murmured softly, then became silent.
Lin Yanyu, feeling uneasy at her sudden quiet, hurried on all fours to the sleeping quarters and gently laid Qin Changxin on the bed.
“You have something on your mind,” Lin Yanyu said, curling up beside her. “Want to tell me?”
“…I also want to take you back to meet my mother,” Qin Changxin said, closing her eyes. “But my mother can no longer see me.”
Lin Yanyu understood the truth of her words.
Qin Changxin’s mother, Xie Li, was once a noblewoman of the Xie family. At a family gathering, she was tricked into drinking spiked wine by the head of the Qin family. After realizing what happened, she couldn’t speak of it and was shamed, eventually forced to marry into the Qin family and give birth to Changxin.
In the original story, Xie Li never had a good life in the Qin household. After Changxin entered Kuixuan Academy at seven, Xie Li completely lost her sanity and drove Changxin away in hysteria whenever they met.
“Such a cruel story,” Lin Yanyu muttered, rubbing the back of the little girl. She then let Qin Changxin hold her in her arms.
“If mother knew I had someone I love, she would be happy,” Qin Changxin said softly. “She doesn’t care whether the one who treats me well is human or demon. Don’t worry.”
Lin Yanyu felt a pang of sadness, flipping over to let her rub her belly. Her cat fur was soft as silk, comforting to touch.
“I know,” Qin Changxin said. “If you feel sad, you can rub my belly… or bury your face in it.”
Lin Yanyu had previously allowed such closeness, but now, after formalizing their relationship, she felt slightly embarrassed to suggest such intimacy.
Before she could finish speaking, her belly grew warm.
Qin Changxin buried her face in the cat fur, her warm breath evenly brushing across Lin Yanyu’s soft skin.
