- Chapter 29 - Drunken Cat Teasing
After greeting Zhuang Jingwei, Lin Yanyu was just about to return to her black cat form when Qin Changxin grabbed her hand and said, “You can eat with us.”
Without waiting for her reply, Qin Changxin instructed the servant to bring over an extra set of bowls and chopsticks and placed them beside her own.
This table was reserved only for the guests Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei, so it had plenty of space. Lin Yanyu didn’t stand on ceremony she transformed into her human form, took the bowls and chopsticks, and sat down next to Qin Changxin. She waited until Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei had started eating before moving her chopsticks.
“Hey, once the Qin family’s ancestral rites are over, why don’t we all go back together?” Feng Xianchen said while eating. “Sister Lin, you’re going to be living in Qi Huan from now on, right? Then you’d better move a couch in early, and get your bedding and wardrobe from the Hundred Treasures Hall. Otherwise, once those ‘Little Chi Tans’ move in, I’m afraid they won’t let you get your dorm supplies anymore.”
“I have no objections,” Zhuang Jingwei replied, then popped a fish ball into her mouth, chewing slowly.
Lin Yanyu looked at Qin Changxin and noticed that although the young girl seemed inclined to go back early, her brows were furrowed as if something was still bothering her. Thinking for a moment, Lin said, “But Changxin just detoxified recently. The residual poison is still in her body, so she shouldn’t tire herself. It’s best to rest for two days before making a long trip.”
“Poisoned?” Zhuang Jingwei’s chopsticks halted, and her face instantly darkened. “Changxin, what crazy thing did your sister do this year?”
Qin Changxin looked troubled and was about to speak when someone behind them suddenly laughed and said, “Second Miss of the Qin family, why don’t I see your father today?”
Lin Yanyu turned her head and saw a young man in dark brown combat attire, with dual blades on his back looking every bit the heroic wanderer. She had no idea who he was.
“Master Lu.” Qin Changxin quickly stood up, holding her teacup to toast him. “My father is busy attending to important matters and asked me to temporarily host the family ceremony on his behalf.”
Hearing how the young girl addressed this hero, Lin Yanyu understood who he was. This was Lu Xuyuan, the head of the Lu family, only three or four years older than Qin Changxin. He had inherited the family responsibilities at a young age due to his father’s untimely death. He also took control of “Yu Xu,” the Lu family’s assassination group.
As for Lü Xuyuan’s role in the original novel… he was essentially a tool who always followed the Qin family’s lead. After Qin Changxin became head of the family, it was thanks to his support that she stabilized the family’s power within six months and led the allied exorcist clans in a siege on the demon world.
Though Lu Xuyuan played an important role and appeared frequently in the later plot, the author clearly positioned him as “the loyal helper aiding Qin Changxin’s rise.”
Lin Yanyu vaguely remembered that when she was reading the story, some readers from the romance section wandered into the yuri genre and left comments asking the author to make Lu Xuyuan Qin Changxin’s husband or partner. The author furiously cursed them out and blocked them.
So even as Lu Xuyuan conversed with Qin Changxin, Lin Yanyu could continue eating calmly.
Qin Changxin, however, looked a bit uneasy. After quickly exchanging pleasantries and sending Lu Xuyuan away, she turned to Lin Yanyu and explained, “The Lu family has had a five generation alliance with ours. I have to show some respect on my father’s behalf.”
“Makes sense. One should be warm to their allies,” Lin Yanyu nodded in understanding and picked up a few pieces of the marinated beef she had been craving, continuing her meal.
But to Qin Changxin, her words sounded like vinegar being spilled, and it instantly put her in a panic.
Seeing that Lin Yanyu liked the marinated beef, she waited until Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei were whispering to each other, then quickly reached out with her chopsticks and dumped half the plate into Lin Yanyu’s bowl.
Lin Yanyu: ???
Qin Changxin avoided her gaze and made up a reason on the spot. “The marinated beef at the family banquet is always delicious. You should eat more. Once we return to Kui Xuan Academy, we won’t have such good meat again.”
Lin Yanyu didn’t realize what the young girl was thinking. She nodded along and, acting on habit, picked up a large portion and put it into Qin Changxin’s bowl, encouraging her, “Then you eat more too… put on some weight.”
Qin Changxin: ………
Feng Xianchen let out an “Oh no!” and laughed, “You can’t tell a girl ‘put on weight!’ Human girls her age are usually trying to lose it!”
“Changxin’s usually too busy. She should eat more,” Zhuang Jingwei retorted. “Otherwise, those thin arms and legs of hers won’t last during missions.”
Although Zhuang Jingwei was the one speaking, Qin Changxin glanced at Lin Yanyu and, seeing her wearing an embarrassed but polite smile, smiled back as she blushed and ate the beef Lin had given her.
“The matter from earlier isn’t over yet,” Zhuang Jingwei said, putting down her chopsticks and activating a soundproofing barrier. “Changxin, what kind of poison did Yang Hengyu give you this time?”
“It’s a poison that causes the victim to sleep for three days,” Lin Yanyu answered for her. “But I’ve already paid Yang Hengyu back with the same dose. Now she’s the one asleep for three days.”
Zhuang Jingwei looked at her approvingly. Lifting the barrier, she banged her chopsticks on the bowl and said in a weak voice, yet with harsh words, “Good! Changxin is too kind. If you can, help her more. Ideally, kill that Yang woman without anyone noticing!”
Lin Yanyu hadn’t expected her to not only agree but also encourage her to stand up for the young girl. She was at a loss for words and fell back on her salaryman instincts, replying mechanically, “Ah, yes. Understood.”
During the banquet, other guests from different factions came over to toast, and some even heckled Qin Changxin into drinking on behalf of her absent father.
Lin Yanyu knew her drinking tolerance was low and tried to help block the drinks, but Feng Xianchen stopped her. “Let her drink! Once she’s drunk, maybe she’ll learn not to go soft-hearted and return home so easily next time!”
Lin Yanyu chuckled and lightly swatted her, still intending to get up, when Zhuang Jingwei interjected, “Don’t overstep your bounds and break protocol.”
Coming from a family known for strict rules, Zhuang Jingwei was like a walking rulebook. Lin Yanyu, being a transmigrator from a more liberal era, was worried she might unintentionally break human customs and embarrass Qin Changxin. So after hearing this, she obediently sat back down.
Qin Changxin had to endure all the toasts herself. Cup after cup of cold liquor went down, and by the time the Qin family head finally arrived, she was already tipsy and dizzy. Though she still sat upright, her gaze was unfocused.
She vaguely heard her father apologizing repeatedly, then announcing rewards for outstanding disciples and juniors.
The table and candles blurred into double images before her eyes, as if she were floating in the clouds.
Then she heard her father call her name. Jolting up, she tried to stand but her legs gave out. She almost fell back into her seat until someone firmly supported her and helped her walk toward her father, who now appeared to have four shadows.
“Please don’t blame her, sir,” Lin Yanyu’s sweet and obedient voice rang in her ear. “My mistress hasn’t been feeling well lately. I’m afraid she might fall. Is she going to form a blood contract with the Wuyuan Fan now? …Can I accompany her to rest afterward?”
Qin Changxin wanted to say something, but her tongue felt numb and stiff. Fearing she’d slur her words, she stayed silent and blinked hard. She looked down to see Lin Yanyu pricking her own finger and dripping blood onto something.
The sight of blood made her uneasy, so she closed her eyes. Not long after, a soft peach blossom scent filled the air. Suddenly, she felt pressure behind her knees her body lifted and turned from standing to lying down!?
Qin Changxin abruptly sobered. Though her vision was still hazy with layered images, she recognized Lin Yanyu’s face.
Lin Yanyu… Lin Yanyu was carrying her bridal-style?!
Lin Yanyu had just put away the Wuyuan Fan and was carrying her out when she heard the young girl whimper and press her fingers against her temples.
“Not feeling well?” Lin asked gently. “It’s okay. You’re just drunk. We’ll be back at Chuan Yun Tower soon. A bit of rest and you’ll feel better.”
Qin Changxin didn’t respond. Lin carried her a bit farther when she suddenly slurred, “Why aren’t you carrying me on your back?”
“You drank too much. If I carry you on my back, you might throw up,” Lin replied with a sigh. “I should’ve helped block the drinks earlier! Now you’ll suffer all night and sleep poorly…”
“Kitty…” Qin Changxin suddenly interrupted.
“Hm?” Lin’s cat ears perked up. Though she didn’t know why the girl was calling her that, she still replied softly, “Kitty is here!”
“Hug…” Qin Changxin mumbled and, without waiting, wrapped her arms around Lin’s waist.
Lin was completely caught off guard. This body was unusually sensitive, and just from that hug, a jolt of tingling pleasure ran through her entire body, paralyzing her on the spot.
“I am hugging you! Let go!” Lin stammered. “I can’t move if you cling like that!”
Qin Changxin gave a soft “mm” but only tightened her grip. Her hand happened to touch Lin’s swaying tail and then she grabbed it.
Lin Yanyu: !!!
She resisted the urge to cry out, but the young girl’s fingers began gently stroking her tail, and she couldn’t help but let out a low, suggestive noise from her throat.
“What are you two doing?” Feng Xianchen’s voice suddenly rang from behind. Moments later, the half-demon rushed over and stared at them in shock. “Wh-why aren’t you back at Chuan Yun Tower yet?!”
“I can’t move, ugh…” Lin tried hard to speak normally, but her voice still came out with strange intonations.
For a demon, the ears and tail are extremely sensitive. Even the most stoic demon couldn’t handle their tail being played with like this.
She was losing it!
Thankfully, Zhuang Jingwei soon arrived too. Calm and composed as always, the senior sister pried Qin Changxin’s hands off and placed them neatly in her lap, then bound her wrists with a string of spiritual energy.
“Kitty!” Qin Changxin panicked and began struggling. Lin almost dropped her.
“Next time you carry her, use a Wake-Up or Sleep Charm first,” Zhuang Jingwei reminded Lin while tapping a Sleep Charm on Qin Changxin’s forehead.
The charm worked fast. Soon, the girl calmed down, leaned her head against Lin Yanyu’s chest, and, just before falling fully asleep, softly murmured “Kitty…”
“She tends to do this during nightmares,” Zhuang Jingwei explained. Seeing Lin Yanyu looking down with concern, she patted her on the shoulder and added, “She might not be calling for you specifically.”
