- Chapter 28 - Etched in Memory
Qin Changxin naturally hadn’t forgotten the so called “privilege” Lin Yanyu had mentioned. Smiling in response, she replied, “Since it’s your choice, how could I refuse?”
Lin Yanyu beamed, her eyes curving into crescents as she turned into a black cat and leapt into Qin Changxin’s arms, nuzzling affectionately and deliberately leaving behind a small tuft of fur before darting out of the bedroom.
She headed toward Chuanyun Pavilion’s courtyard, glanced up at the sky, and estimated it was nearly You hour (5–7 pm). After a moment’s thought, she sprinted toward Hengyu Pavilion.
She had to make sure the young lady received the Wuyuan Fan during the ancestral ceremony and not let Yang Hengyu snatch it away again.
According to the original story, Hengyu Pavilion was rigged with traps meant to deter thieves. But Lin Yanyu had braved far more dangerous places in her previous life these petty mechanisms were nothing to her.
Light footed, she stepped on beams and roof tiles, soon landing silently beneath a window. Using her Spirit Control Technique, she sensed Yang Hengyu and Ye Yaozhi were inside, deliberately lowering their voices.
She found this suspicious. Yang Hengyu was used to being loud and arrogantwhat could possibly require such secrecy?
With her suspicions aroused, she suppressed her presence and hid in the shadow beneath the window to eavesdrop.
“Once I plead with the family head, you’ll play the pitiful card,” Yang Hengyu said gleefully. “That way, Father will think I deserve the Wuyuan Fan more and gift it to me. I’ll then give it to you. After all, once the servant-master blood pact is formed, all the servant’s possessions belong to the master.”
Ye Yaozhi exclaimed in disbelief, “How could I possibly be worthy of such generosity?!”
Yang Hengyu sneered. “Generosity? I just can’t stand Qin Changxin being happy. I want to steal what was meant for her and give it to someone dumber like you, so that when she sees it, she’ll be crushed. Do you really think this is some kind of gift?”
A stifled cry followed.
Peeking inside, Lin Yanyu saw Yang Hengyu gripping Ye Yaozhi’s large fox tail tightly. Just watching made Lin Yanyu’s own tail ache in sympathy.
Yang Hengyu continued, “Once you get the Wuyuan Fan, make sure Qin Changxin sees it. She needs to understand clearly what was meant for her now belongs to you. Then we’ll leave. Father sent her a letter half a year ago promising a beautiful and powerful artifact. She’s probably been anticipating it for months. Before I leave, I’m going to crush that hope completely…”
Lin Yanyu wasn’t surprised Yang Hengyu wanted to steal the Wuyuan Fan. That had happened in the original novel during the ancestral ceremony.
What she didn’t expect was that Yang Hengyu planned not only to take it but to give it to Ye Yaozhi—who would then flaunt it in front of Qin Changxin before walking away.
Ye Yaozhi was practically useless in a fight, barely capable of defeating even a low level exorcist. To Qin Changxin, having the artifact handed to someone like her would be an unbearable humiliation.
Returning to where she’d started, Lin Yanyu found her fur bristling in rage.
In her past life, she’d seen her fair share of evil and thought she’d grown numb to it. Rarely did anything make her fur stand on end. Yet, her current cat form reacted instinctively to her anger some quirks really did transcend timelines.
She impatiently smoothed down her bristled fur. After overhearing Yang Hengyu and Ye Yaozhi’s plan to seek the family head before the ceremony, she quickly pieced together all the intel she had.
Since Yang Hengyu insisted on picking a fight, she wouldn’t mind striking first.
Resolute, Lin Yanyu summoned a small vial containing Three Day Cold, using the water inside to condense ten poisoned ice needles. Then she shifted into human form and stormed to Hengyu Pavilion, charging through the entrance.
“Yang Hengyu! You poisoned my master! You’re going to pay!”
Shouting loudly, she knocked aside the approaching servants with precision and easily ascended the stairs to the third floor, where Yang Hengyu and Ye Yaozhi were.
Her accusations rang out like thunder, forcing Yang Hengyu to respond. She stormed out, whip in hand, ready to confront her.
Seeing Lin Yanyu alone, Yang Hengyu sneered, “When did I ever poison your master? Stop spouting baseless nonsense!”
She barely finished her sentence before Lin Yanyu flung the ice needles.
“Here’s your evidence! Take it back!”
Using her Spirit Control Technique, Lin Yanyu manipulated the needles’ trajectories. Before Yang Hengyu could react, all ten pierced her acupuncture points.
“You!” Yang Hengyu managed to utter just one word before the cold spread from her lower abdomen throughout her body. Her breath caught, her eyes closed, and she collapsed.
“Master!” Ye Yaozhi cried out in panic, rushing to check Yang Hengyu’s breathing and pulse. After confirming she was still alive, she turned to the hesitant servants at the door. “She poisoned the young mistress! Arrest her! I’ll find the family head!”
Meanwhile, Qin Changxin was organizing the ceremonial robes stored in her storage jade pendant. She had chosen some to give to Lin Yanyu and was wondering: if the cat liked them, she’d have new ones made at Xuan Academy; if not…
Before she could finish the thought, someone shouted downstairs: “Second Miss! The eldest miss is in trouble! Come quickly!”
Qin Changxin paused, unmoved.
What did Yang Hengyu’s troubles have to do with her?
She continued sorting the clothes.
The messenger grew frantic and tried again: “Second Miss! Your demon servant’s been arrested!”
That got her attention.
How could Yanyu be arrested?
That didn’t make sense why would she cause trouble in the Qin family?
“Why was she arrested?” Qin Changxin demanded as she followed the exorcist to the dungeon.
“She used poison needles to attack the eldest miss,” the exorcist explained truthfully, though he muttered, “You really shouldn’t keep wild demons. Best to have a beast master tame one from birth those forest ones are always hard to control…”
“Silence! Don’t spout nonsense!” Qin Changxin snapped, releasing a bit of spiritual pressure.
The exorcist, still a novice at the Qingtan level, was immediately cowed into silence.
At the dungeon, a crowd of exorcists had gathered noisily.
“My demon servant?” Qin Changxin asked.
“The family head is interrogating her himself!” someone said. “Second Miss, poisoning the eldest miss isn’t a joke.”
“Yeah, you’ve been away studying. Don’t tell us you don’t know how serious this is?”
“Maybe the second miss wanted to rise by eliminating her sister. Didn’t want blood on her own hands, so she had her demon do the dirty work.”
Rumors swirled, and whispers of “fratricide” filled the air.
Qin Changxin ignored them, memorizing every face, then walked into the dungeon.
It was damp, cold, and reeked of mildew and blood. As she heard the sound of whipping and screams, she quickened her pace.
She feared Lin Yanyu might be suffering, but what she saw made her stop in shock.
Lin Yanyu was calmly seated, arms crossed, watching Ye Yaozhi—who was chained to the wall.
The Qin family head stood nearby, whip in hand, lashing Ye Yaozhi until her blood soaked the ground.
“Sorry,” Lin Yanyu said, ears twitching as she turned to Qin Changxin, “Things were urgent, and I didn’t have time to explain.”
Qin Changxin, completely confused, quietly asked, “What happened?”
“Just giving her a taste of her own medicine,” Lin Yanyu said coldly. “I told your father that Yang Hengyu almost poisoned you. Now her servant is paying the price.”
When asked how she’d proven it, Lin Yanyu explained that Three Day Cold could only be freshly prepared and preserved for 30 days at most. Only Yang Hengyu and her father knew the formula.
If Lin Yanyu hadn’t forced out the poison from Qin Changxin, how else would she have that very same fresh poison?
And Ye Yaozhi had immediately identified the poison as Three-Day Cold. How could a servant possibly know that without prior conspiracy?
Realization dawned on Qin Changxin but she had one more question: “How did you know what the poison was?”
Before Lin Yanyu could answer, Qin Changxin suddenly guessed: “You learned of it… in the demon realm, didn’t you?”
Lin Yanyu admitted it. She had revealed her identity as the demon realm’s young master to Qin’s father—and backed it up with artifacts and relics that confirmed it.
“But why now?” Qin Changxin asked, visibly shaken.
“Because you matter,” Lin Yanyu said solemnly. “Besides, we have a common enemy. Your father won’t betray me.”
As they walked out, Lin Yanyu added, “Your father said if he couldn’t finish the interrogation in time, the ancestral ceremony would be led by you.”
Outside, Qin Changxin paused. “There are rumors. They say I tried to kill my sister for power…”
Ten minutes later, a pile of exorcists lay groaning on the ground still fluffed.
