- Chapter 27 - Differential Treatment
To avoid embarrassing the young girl, Lin Yanyu pretended not to notice and responded with a calm “Oh” before lying back down.
“Don’t stay up too late. Get some rest,” she added.
Lin Yanyu had just closed her eyes when she felt a shadow loom over her. Worried that the girl might be learning strange things again from her comic books, she had to open her eyes.
Tan Changxin was leaning slightly toward her. The moment she saw Lin Yanyu’s eyes open, she immediately sat upright.
“What are you doing?” Lin Yanyu couldn’t help but ask.
“Just checking if you’ve fallen asleep,” Tan Changxin replied with a straight face, though her ears had turned red.
Lin Yanyu noticed the color in her ears and blurted out, “You were planning to wait until I fell asleep and then stay up all night reading comics again, weren’t you?”
She really feared waking up to find the girl with dark circles under her eyes again. Before Tan Changxin could reply, she pulled her over and pinned her onto the bed with a warning:
“Tomorrow is the ancestral ceremony. Aren’t you afraid Yang Hengyu and the others will cause trouble? Don’t you want your spiritual tools? Go to sleep!”
Tan Changxin had wanted to coax her into sleeping first, but when she met Lin Yanyu’s serious gaze, she immediately shut her mouth, quietly took off her shoes, socks, and warm outer robe, snapped her fingers to extinguish the candlelight, and slipped into her own bed in the darkness.
She lay quietly and obediently, but Lin Yanyu felt even more uneasy. She peeked out and inched closer to observe.
With her cat like night vision, she soon noticed Tan Changxin slightly opening her eyes every time their gazes met, the girl would quickly shut them again.
This definitely didn’t look like someone who was going to sleep peacefully.
Lin Yanyu didn’t call her out but watched patiently. Over the next half hour, she saw Tan Changxin open her eyes six times. Each time, upon making eye contact, she shut them again.
Finally, Lin Yanyu couldn’t hold back. She reached over and gently pinched Tan Changxin’s earlobe, grumbling in exasperation, “Aren’t you tired?”
“Why aren’t you sleeping?” Tan Changxin asked softly.
“I already slept eight hours,” Lin Yanyu replied honestly, then asked, “When you were at Kui Xuan Academy, did you also stay up all night studying texts like this?”
“Occasionally,” Tan Changxin said. “But there were disciplinary elders who patrolled at night. If they found someone burning the midnight oil, the entire dorm would be punished.”
“Then I should punish you too. Otherwise, you’ll keep staying up all night.” Lin Yanyu half-joked, half-serious. “You’ll copy the comics right in front of me. How about that?”
Tan Changxin didn’t reply. When Lin Yanyu glanced over, she saw the girl had pulled the blanket over her whole face her mood unreadable.
Lin Yanyu pouted, retracted her hand, and had just closed her eyes when she heard Tan Changxin’s muffled voice:
“You really come up with the strangest ideas.”
Grudging as she was, the girl obediently slept until dawn.
On the day of the family ceremony, there were no actual activities until You hour (5–7 p.m.). Tan Changxin decided to accompany Lin Yanyu in feeding the horses.
It was still the same horse demon they brought from the demon realm jet black, sleek, and shiny. Though it had gained intelligence and could understand human speech, its cultivation wasn’t high enough to speak or transform. In the demon realm, it had served as a mount or pulled carriages.
Lin Yanyu fed it hay and asked, “Want something else? How about soybeans or carrots?”
The horse neighed twice, then suddenly raised a hoof and scratched out the word “meat” on the ground.
Lin Yanyu: “…”
Well, what else to expect from a demon? Normal horses didn’t eat meat.
Not having the authority here in the human realm, Lin Yanyu stepped aside and showed the word to Tan Changxin. After a few seconds, she asked, “Can we feed it meat?”
Tan Changxin didn’t answer right away. Instead, she turned to the horse and asked, “Why do you want meat? Is it due to your body’s needs, or just personal craving?”
The horse didn’t neigh again but stomped its hooves impatiently.
“If I feed you chicken, duck, and fish, and one day you get tired of it and suddenly pounce on a person on the street—wouldn’t that bring trouble to your young master?” Tan Changxin said, then grabbed some hay and tossed it into the trough. “If you’re going to live in the human realm, you must follow human rules.”
The horse snorted in despair and buried its whole head in the hay it looked thoroughly depressed.
Lin Yanyu recalled that even in the demon realm, the original host had forbidden feeding meat to horse demons. The reasoning was that once they craved meat but lacked the ability to hunt for it, they’d risk being killed by other predators. Better not to tempt them in the first place.
After leaving the stable, they inspected the carriage they had brought from the demon realm.
“This carriage emits too much demon aura. With my strength, I can only suppress it for a few days,” Tan Changxin said helplessly. “After the family ceremony, I’ll have Feng Xianchen come take it back to the Feng family for safekeeping. Otherwise, if the aura leaks out, it’ll be big trouble.”
Lin Yanyu nodded. She remembered the Feng family specialized in training beast tamers and housed many young beasts. The demon king’s aura would be highly beneficial to their growth.
They strengthened the seals on the carriage room and returned to their bedroom in Chuan Yun Tower.
Tan Changxin sat at the desk. Under Lin Yanyu’s watchful gaze, she calmly retrieved the comic from her storage pendant and returned it, replacing it with a thick, dark-gold book.
“These are the complete academy rules of Kui Xuan. You should memorize them,” she said, pushing the book toward Lin Yanyu.
Since Tan Changxin wouldn’t be staying long at the house, and Lin Yanyu would soon be attending Kui Xuan Academy, it made sense to familiarize herself with the rules.
Lin Yanyu, who always immersed herself in reading, didn’t mind. Even dry academy rules couldn’t deter her.
Because of that, she didn’t notice when Tan Changxin quietly pulled the comic back out, flipping through it while mentally simulating the movements.
Before she knew it, it was afternoon. Lin Yanyu closed the book, her head filled with academy regulations.
Through the strict rules, she gained a clearer picture of the human realm.
Kui Xuan Academy, true to its name, was a mysterious Daoist institution dedicated to exploring the arcane. It taught not only demon hunting but also exorcism, ghost-catching, beast-taming, and prophetic arts.
Due to the border shared with the demon realm and the devastating war 18 years ago demon hunters remained the most respected profession in the human realm. Every year, noble clans selected outstanding descendants or disciples to undergo academic and physical tests for admission.
Now in a time of peace, many of these students weren’t motivated by justice, but by the prestige and perks of being a demon-hunter.
However, having read the original story, Lin Yanyu knew this peace was only temporary. The demon king who vanished 18 years ago would return, using demon-hunters to invade the demon realm and usurp the throne.
If the story continued on its original track, war between the realms was only a matter of time.
After analyzing all this, Lin Yanyu looked at Tan Changxin, just about to ask about the demon king only to see the girl staring intently at the comic laid on the table.
She leaned over, saw the content, and instantly covered Tan Changxin’s eyes, forcing her to stop.
“Comics are just for fun. Don’t treat them like actual sword manuals!” Lin Yanyu said helplessly. “The artist exaggerates the movements and… anatomy to attract readers…”
“But they still have to base it on real anatomy and theory before exaggerating,” Tan Changxin said seriously.
Lin Yanyu was momentarily speechless. After a while, she suggested, “Why not just ask Feng Xianchen or Senior Sister Zhuang? They’re in a relationship right now far more reliable than some comic artist with unclear romantic experience.”
Tan Changxin paused for a few seconds and nodded. “You’re right. I won’t look anymore.”
Lin Yanyu finally put the comic away and uncovered her eyes, relieved. Then she asked about the demon king:
“Xiao Xianyi, the ‘Blood Leopard’ who disappeared 18 years ago does the academy have any records on him?”
Tan Changxin froze, her expression turning grave.
“I’ve heard a little,” she said. “But that demon king moves like a ghost, always leaving blood and chaos in his wake…” She hesitated, then cautiously asked, “Are you planning to seek revenge?”
“My mother warned me to keep an eye out for him in the human realm,” Lin Yanyu replied, recalling the original story and making up a reason. “After all, he was the one who tricked her 18 years ago.”
“When we’re back at the academy, I can take you to the records,” Tan Changxin said. “But you must never go after him alone!”
“I know, I get it,” Lin Yanyu sat down and promised earnestly. “I value my life! I’m very aware of my limits!”
Her main goal was survival. She wasn’t about to confront the final boss.
Seeing Tan Changxin’s faint smile, she felt her cat ears being gently stroked.
“Valuing your life is good,” Tan Changxin said softly, her hand sliding down to touch Lin Yanyu’s human ears.
Lin Yanyu obediently sat there, letting her play with her ears. But when her face was suddenly squished with two hands, she realized something
Tan Changxin was using the same technique she used to pet a cat on her human form!
Lin Yanyu had always separated her beast and human forms mentally. This realization made her a bit uncomfortable, so she asked directly:
“Should I turn back into a cat so you can pet me properly?”
“No need,” Tan Changxin declined instantly. Then she asked, “Do you know the difference between a demon beast and a demon clan?”
“Demon clans can take human form, speak, and think independently,” Lin Yanyu answered automatically this was common knowledge for demon-hunters. “But demon beasts are more like regular animals, only with higher intelligence and longer lifespans.”
“Since you’re part of a demon clan, I can’t treat you the same way as a demon beast,” Tan Changxin said seriously. “For demon clans, their beast form usually only appears when their inner energy is depleted when they’re about to lose.”
“But what if I just want to become a cat and let you pet me to help you relax?” Lin Yanyu asked.
Tan Changxin’s hands froze.
“I told you from the beginning, I’m different from other demon clans. You can touch my beast form however you want,” Lin Yanyu said, taking her hand with a smile. “That’s a privilege I gave to you. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten?”
