- Chapter 100 - This Long Night
After the death of the fierce demon Blood Leopard, the ruler of the Demon Realm took the initiative to extend an olive branch toward the Human Realm. Gradually, harmony began to grow between the peoples of the two worlds.
In her first year as the new clan head, Qin Changxin kept her promise she led a long procession with Lin Yanyu back to the Demon Realm, where they held a grand wedding ceremony.
The human exorcists who accompanied them were the first group sent from the Human Realm as part of an official exchange. After the wedding, according to the demon lord’s arrangements, they spread out across the land to prepare for a year-long observation and study mission.
Qin Changxin’s alcohol tolerance was still as poor as ever. But today was her wedding day whenever friends and colleagues came to toast her, she drank them all with a smile. Before the banquet even ended, her stomach began to ache from all the wine, and Lin Yanyu had to carry her back to their bridal chamber to rest early.
“Isn’t it… bad luck to do this?” Qin Changxin asked, curled up on her side.
“I’ve never heard of such a taboo among humans,” Lin Yanyu said, spoon-feeding her hangover soup. “In my past life I attended several human weddings plenty of newlyweds passed out drunk before the night was even over.”
“But tonight is our wedding night…” Qin Changxin murmured shyly, eyes lowered. “It’s… not quite the same.”
“And yet you still drank so much.” Lin Yanyu teased her, then suddenly remembered something and asked quickly, “Wait, don’t tell me you actually expect me to take the lead tonight?”
“Why not?” Qin Changxin blinked. “You always refuse to make the first move. You let me bully you every time how could that be fair?”
“H–how is that not fair!” Lin Yanyu protested, putting the bowl aside and showing her sharp claws. “I never cut my nails!”
Half-drunk and half-awake, Qin Changxin was far more willful than usual. She caught Lin Yanyu’s hand and, with a mischievous smile, bit gently at her fingertips.
“Hey! That’s dirty!” Lin Yanyu yelped. “Let go stop fooling around!”
Qin Changxin obediently released her, eyes glittering with amusement.
“So? Still won’t?” she asked softly.
“How could I not?” Lin Yanyu sighed, picking the bowl back up. “After being on the receiving end of your antics so many times, of course I’ve learned how.”
She fed Qin Changxin another spoonful of soup. “But not tonight. You need to rest. It wouldn’t be enjoyable anyway if your stomach still hurts.”
And so, their wedding night passed quietly and peacefully.
The next evening, while out for a walk after dinner, Feng Xianchen saw Lin Yanyu sitting by the riverside trimming her nails. The nail clippings fell into the water, and soon small fish swarmed to nibble away the faint demon energy left on them.
“Big Sister, why are you suddenly cutting your nails?” Feng Xianchen sat beside her, curious. “Mother Xuanqing once said cat demons should always keep their claws.”
“I’m an adult now,” Lin Yanyu replied, still filing her nails. “It’s time I did what adult demons should do. As for what your mother says don’t take her too seriously. Haven’t you noticed those claws of hers are fake?”
Feng Xianchen blinked in surprise. Having only recently arrived in the Demon Realm, she’d been so overwhelmed by the joy and awe of meeting her family that she hadn’t noticed such details.
“Wait if Mother wears fake claws, then… who is she sharing her den with? Don’t tell me I’m getting a new stepmother?”
“Of course not.” Lin Yanyu chuckled. “Didn’t your uncle tell you? Feng Funing your other mother came back last year. Mother Xuanqing even sacrificed her tail to forge her a new body.”
Feng Xianchen’s eyes went wide. After a stunned pause, she cried out in delight, realizing the meaning behind certain small signs she’d noticed before. Then she rushed off happily toward the demon lord’s palace.
Watching her go, Lin Yanyu smiled faintly. She clipped off the last nail, filed away the sharp edges, then dipped her hand into the river to wash away the powder.
She knew she ought to use protective sheaths even filed, the claws could still cause accidental harm. But with materials scarce, a light coating of spiritual or demonic energy would do just as well, as long as she controlled it carefully.
By then, Qin Changxin had recovered from her hangover. When Lin Yanyu entered with her medicine, Qin Changxin saw that all her claws were gone and was quite startled.
“What? Don’t tell me you’re afraid now,” Lin Yanyu said with a playful smirk, pulling her close. “But since you’re my new wife, I’ll allow you to back out once.”
Qin Changxin smiled as she took the medicine bowl. “Back out of what? I only hope you’ve done your homework properly, my dear ‘Young Master.’”
“Of course,” Lin Yanyu said confidently.
But once things actually began, she quickly realized she had overestimated herself.
Since Qin Changxin disliked doing anything in water, Lin Yanyu carried her into the curtained bed instead, trying to rely on what she’d learned from experience. But to her surprise, Qin Changxin couldn’t relax no matter how she coaxed her, they made little progress.
At last Lin Yanyu had to stop, tucking her soft tail into Qin Changxin’s arms to help her calm down.
“Are you afraid?” she asked, puzzled. “But you should still remember what it was like between us in our past life…”
Qin Changxin nodded lightly, chewing her lip.
“If you’re uncomfortable, don’t force yourself,” Lin Yanyu said gently, washing her hands clean and pulling up the quilt. She let Qin Changxin rest against her chest. “Don’t be nervous. What we’re doing is for joy, not obligation. You don’t have to think about pleasing me. Tonight’s my turn just relax.”
Qin Changxin nodded again, resting quietly for a while. Then she whispered, “Let’s try again.”
As the saying goes the second time is easier. Lin Yanyu twined her tail around Qin Changxin’s wrist and began again, more patient this time.
Qin Changxin brushed her chin along the soft tail, eyes meeting Lin Yanyu’s before glancing toward the red bridal curtains. Outside, the twin candles still burned bright, their flames flickering against the crimson silk.
As the rhythm deepened, Qin Changxin lowered her head and kissed Lin Yanyu’s cat ears, then her brow.
“When I used to do this to you,” she murmured near her ear, “I always wondered what you felt. Now that I know… it truly is happiness.”
“Isn’t it?” Lin Yanyu smiled, returning the kiss. “There’s a reason I never minded being ‘bullied’ by you.”
“This hardly counts as bullying.” Qin Changxin laughed softly. “But you’re so attentive aren’t you afraid I’ll get addicted to this and never give you a turn again?”
“I’m not afraid,” Lin Yanyu said without hesitation. “We have plenty of time. And you’re far too ambitious I’m sure one day you’ll want to reclaim the lead.”
The two chatted and laughed, their words mingling with soft breaths, until deep into the night.
“Let’s take a bath before sleeping,” Lin Yanyu said at last, withdrawing her tail and getting up to call the maids to heat water. But Qin Changxin caught her hand.
“It’s not over yet,” she said, sitting up. With a gentle tug she pulled Lin Yanyu back, cupping her face and kissing her deeply before pressing her down again, untying her sash and buttons as they tumbled together.
And so that night stretched on and on.
