- Chapter 99 - A New Life
After Yang Hengyu’s death, when Tan Changxin saw Ye Yaozhi carefully gathering her ashes, she reminded her softly,
“The Hengyu Pavilion is going to be rebuilt. If you wish to sort through her belongings, you’d better go soon.”
Ye Yaozhi quickly thanked her, stored the porcelain urn carefully, and hurried toward the Tan residence.
Watching her leave, Tan Changxin murmured,
“If we don’t rebuild the residence of a criminal, the other clans will see it as silently endorsing that criminal’s actions. Even the late clan master’s Qing’an Tower will be rebuilt.”
Lin Yanyu nodded. “I understand.” She seemed distracted, gazing at the Feng clan’s exorcists as they cleaned the execution ground. “But… Ye Yaozhi’s reaction just now it didn’t seem like she hated Yang Hengyu at all.”
“Last night Ye Yaozhi went to see her alone,” Tan Changxin explained, handing Lin Yanyu a written contract. “She made some sort of agreement with the guards as witness.”
Lin Yanyu frowned after reading a few lines. “And what did they say to each other?”
“The guards who eavesdropped said not much,” Tan Changxin replied. “At first, Yang Hengyu kept driving Ye Yaozhi away, but later her tone softened. She even told her, ‘If I don’t come back, you mustn’t die.’”
“She didn’t tell Ye Yaozhi that her soul would be completely destroyed?!” Lin Yanyu’s frown deepened. “Great now that foolish wolf will wait for her for decades, maybe centuries!”
“That’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Tan Changxin said quietly. “What we couldn’t do, Yang Hengyu did. Think if Ye Yaozhi can never find her reincarnation, she’ll keep on living. We won’t need to worry she’ll follow her in death or cause trouble again.”
“But… wouldn’t endless waiting hurt?” Lin Yanyu asked softly.
“If she feared the pain of waiting, she would’ve chosen to die last night,” Tan Changxin sighed.
Lin Yanyu couldn’t argue. She lit a small flame on her fingertip and burned the contract to ashes.
“Let’s go,” Tan Changxin said, taking her hand. “There’s nothing urgent today. I’ll accompany you back to the demon realm… We still need to return your mother’s memories.”
Lin Yanyu had long wanted to do so to send Feng Funing’s memories and consciousness back to Xuanqing. But Feng Funing had insisted she stay to assist her partner, and Lin Yanyu, worried that Tan Changxin would overwork herself, had delayed the trip.
Of course, she knew that when Tan Changxin said “nothing urgent,” it was a lie. As the newly instated clan head, she had endless duties, especially with the aftermath of Tan Jianren’s death. Even after weeks of hard work, the case files still piled high.
“Then let’s make it a quick trip,” Lin Yanyu agreed.
They headed to the Feng estate to borrow horses and a carriage.
When their horse demon, Aji, reluctantly rubbed its stall’s wooden beam before leaving, Lin Yanyu laughed.
“What, getting sentimental? Don’t worry, we’ll be back soon.”
Zhuzhou was the nearest human city to the demon realm, and traveling by daylight was safer. Together, they drove the carriage smoothly toward the boundary between worlds.
As soon as they crossed the barrier, a dark shadow appeared ahead.
Xuanqing was supporting a cat-form Feng Funing. Before Lin Yanyu could even pull the reins, Xuanqing raised a hand, activating a teleportation array on the ground.
They arrived outside Xuanqing’s cold, solemn hall.
“You’ve returned safely,” Xuanqing said. “That means the Blood Leopard is dead. Did he say anything before dying?”
Lin Yanyu dismounted with Tan Changxin, ready to answer, but Feng Funing reached over and curiously rubbed her cat ears.
“…Never mind, let’s return her memories first,” Xuanqing said, clearly exasperated.
That was their purpose anyway.
Feng Funing, still mute and memoryless, clung to Xuanqing like a docile cat. Following Xuanqing’s gentle tug, she obeyed.
Returning her memories wasn’t difficult. In the meditation chamber, Lin Yanyu pressed a finger to Feng Funing’s forehead a faint silver mark glowed, drifted into Feng Funing’s brow, and vanished.
The return of memories made Feng Funing tremble in pain. Xuanqing held her close, whispering,
“You’ll be fine, Ning’er. Breathe slowly.”
She fed her a pill, then turned to the others.
“Tell me about your time in Lianzhou.”
Lin Yanyu recounted everything truthfully, even taking out the Azure Boat Bell gifted by the master of Chenyu Valley.
Xuanqing accepted it, her eyes softening.
“This was a trinket Ning’er gave me when I first became a demon guard she said it would protect me.”
After a pause, she smiled wryly.
“Later, when I was strong enough, I gave it back to her. Didn’t expect she’d pass it to another cat.”
She suddenly yelped as Feng Funing pinched her arm hard, glaring up at her.
Xuanqing blinked, bewildered. A moment later, Feng Funing snatched a spirit slip and scribbled furiously.
“…Wait, you mean you gave her the other bell? There were two of them?” Xuanqing read aloud, startled. “You gave it away because you were angry with me?”
Feng Funing smacked her on the head with the slip.
Ears drooping, Xuanqing stammered,
“I’m sorry! I only returned it to show I was strong, not to reject your gift truly!”
She kept apologizing, while Lin Yanyu and Tan Changxin exchanged helpless looks. Who would’ve thought that the first thing Feng Funing would do after regaining memory was quarrel with her lover?
Fortunately, she calmed down quickly it was all an old misunderstanding anyway. Soon she pinched Xuanqing’s cheeks affectionately, urging her to keep listening to the report.
Lin Yanyu continued, detailing how the former demon lord had aided them and how the Lianzhou ruler had rewarded them handsomely.
“Keep the Exorcist Command,” Xuanqing said. “It’s a fine item. As for the Xuanlong Demon Lord she truly wasn’t of this world. She came by divine order. Before her arrival, the demons were leaderless, the realm in chaos, and there was no barrier between worlds. Humans and demons were at constant war.”
“She declared herself ruler, committed countless cruelties, and eventually, after absorbing too much bloodlust, fell to demonic corruption. When we and the humans finally defeated her, she revealed the truth before dying then left behind her blood, horn, bones, and scales, and vanished into divine light.”
Turning to Lin Yanyu, she said,
“It’s only right she aided you against Xiao Xianyi.”
“I see,” Lin Yanyu murmured. “Then should I return the Floating Axe to the demon realm’s sacred vault?”
“It chose you,” Xuanqing said simply. “It’s yours. The Azure Bell too. Magical relics are scarce—cherish them.”
They chatted a while longer, but Lin Yanyu, remembering their “quick trip” plan, politely announced they should return.
Xuanqing agreed but added something unexpected:
“This time, Mei Linghan will go back with you. Since humans can now safely enter the demon realm, demons no longer need a master servant blood pact to enter the human realm.”
Feng Funing nodded, holding up a spirit slip with written words:
“As long as the Blood Jade of Approval is held jointly by the demon lord and the head of the exorcists, we can regulate who crosses between realms.”
It was a sound plan ensuring that only registered, trustworthy individuals could travel freely. Any crimes could be easily traced.
Lin Yanyu and Tan Changxin agreed.
Outside, Mei Linghan was already seated at the carriage.
“Thank you both,” she smiled. “Rest on the way.”
Inside, Lin Yanyu turned back into a black cat and curled up on Tan Changxin’s lap only for Tan Changxin to lift her aside with a teasing grin.
“Too small. I want a big cat.”
Understanding, Lin Yanyu transformed into her full feline form, large enough to fill the carriage, curling protectively around her lover.
Tan Changxin lay back against her soft belly, eyes closing peacefully.
Back in the human realm, half a month passed in busy peace.
Mei Linghan’s arrival caused a stir, but soon the four great families Feng, Zhuang, Tan, and Lu jointly approved the demon lord’s proposal:
Humans could now enter the demon realm with protection; demons could enter the human realm without bondage contracts.
Communities of demon folk in human lands could likewise travel freely between cities.
The policy was new, and deep-rooted fear remained but it was a beginning.
By early summer, Feng Xianchen and Zhuang Jingwei returned from Lianzhou.
With Lin Yanyu’s help, Tan Changxin had organized her clan affairs perfectly. She finally had time to host a small gathering.
“Guess what? Lady Lu’s second daughter stayed behind in Hanlan City as an official!” Feng Xianchen blurted as soon as she sat. “She totally likes the princess when we were swapping the princess’s body, she took care of her like no noble lady ever would!”
“What about Candle Wan-sheng?” Lin Yanyu interrupted, worried. “Was she executed, or…?”
“We wanted to,” Feng Xianchen said, “but the cats of Chenyu Valley had their own score to settle. The princess let them handle her. She’s probably dead or wishing she were. Knowing that valley, they might be using her for experiments.”
Zhuang Jingwei fed her a fish ball, then turned to the hosts.
“And you two? How are your injuries? I heard you’ve been working nonstop.”
“With Aunt Mei’s help, we’re recovering,” Lin Yanyu said. “Just another couple of weeks and we’ll be fine… probably.”
“Ha! A clan leader never gets that much rest,” Feng Xianchen laughed. “If not for Sister Lin, Changxin would’ve gone blind from reading scrolls! I grew up watching my uncle work trust me!”
Everyone laughed. Feng Xianchen brought out fruit wine gifted by the cat demons of Chenyu Valley.
But since most were still healing, only she drank and soon became tipsy.
“Hic I wanna go see my cat mom in the demon realm… hic… take me home, sis…” she slurred, clutching Lin Yanyu’s sleeve and sobbing.
Lin Yanyu patted her hair.
“When I’m free, I’ll take you back to attend our wedding.”
Tan Changxin choked on her tea, coughing uncontrollably.
Zhuang Jingwei blinked. “Wait you’re engaged?”
Lin Yanyu smiled, patting Changxin’s back.
“The demon lord already sent a betrothal letter to the Tan clan. As long as our clan head agrees, it’s official.”
“Ahem… Only one wedding in the demon realm? That won’t do,” Tan Changxin declared, wrapping an arm around her waist. “Back then, Lady Feng Funing promised the demon lord a hundred banquets and ten miles of red bridal finery I think I’ll match that.”
Feng Xianchen, still drunk, threw an arm around Zhuang Jingwei’s neck.
“I wanna try that too! Hic When I get back, I’m sending a betrothal letter to Jingwei”
“Wh-what are you saying?!” Zhuang Jingwei blushed scarlet. “W-We’re already engaged!”
Seeing them, Lin Yanyu and Tan Changxin smiled at each other and intertwined their fingers.
Winter passed, spring bloomed, and summer approached.
Their new life had just begun.
