- Chapter 101 - Revisiting Old Places
Five years later Demon Realm, Forbidden Grounds.
Lin Yanyu brought Qin Changxin to the place where the Huixing Sword was sealed, gazing into the abyss with complicated feelings.
“Was it truly Lord Siming who appeared to you in a dream?” Qin Changxin asked.
“Mm. The god said the Huixing Sword doesn’t belong to this realm only I can use it to cut through time and space, return to the world I once stayed in, and deliver it to the deity who guards that world,” Lin Yanyu nodded. “The god also said that the sword itself will guide me to that deity.”
“Just in case, I’ll go with you,” Qin Changxin said. “That sword already has a spirit and it was once the Blood Panther’s weapon.”
The two had been married for many years now and understood each other perfectly. Lin Yanyu had already expected her to say that, so she only nodded, took her hand, and said softly:
“Let’s go.”
After Yang Hengyu brought the Huixing Sword to the demon realm, it had been sealed in the deep pool where the Black Dragon fell after turning demon. Lin Yanyu opened a protective barrier with her Azure Boat Bell, and together they passed through the heavy murderous aura, reaching the bottom of the pool.
There, a golden longsword adorned with tiny stars stood half-buried in the stone. As if sensing their presence, the sword trembled and gave a faint, ringing hum.
“Long time no see.” Lin Yanyu placed her hand on the hilt, greeting it softly. “I’m sending you home now.”
The sword quivered again, as if puzzled. Lin Yanyu drew it out and recited the incantation the god had taught her then slashed forward.
A blinding crack split open before them, expanding rapidly. A strong suction pulled them both in at once.
Through the dark void, Lin Yanyu held the sword in one hand and wrapped her other arm tightly around Qin Changxin. Dizzy from the whirling blackness, she suddenly felt solid ground beneath her feet and the familiar scent of coffee in the air.
“Welcome to Demon Valley Cat Cafe,” came a cool female voice from nearby. “Long time no see. Would you like a vanilla latte to relax?”
Lin Yanyu blinked, realizing she was still clutching Qin Changxin’s arm. She quickly released her and looked toward the voice.
It was a woman or rather, an orange tabby cat demon wearing a brown apron the café’s owner, and Lin Yanyu’s old acquaintance: Shen Zhuo.
“Sorry, Boss Shen,” Lin Yanyu said quickly, hiding the sword behind her. “I must’ve chosen the wrong coordinates while practicing a teleportation spell. I’m busy today, no coffee maybe next time”
“The landing point was set by me, not your fault,” Shen Zhuo interrupted calmly. “Welcome back… Captain Lin, who was declared deceased.”
The words caught in Lin Yanyu’s throat. She stared at Shen Zhuo wide-eyed for a long time before asking, half-stunned:
“You’re… the god who guards this world?”
“Not exactly guarding,” Shen Zhuo replied, turning around to load coffee beans into the grinder. “Just visiting and keeping an eye on things. Still the usual order? What about your wife, what would she like?”
“I’ll have my usual,” Lin Yanyu said, pulling Qin Changxin to a table and sitting down, trying to sound casual. “And for my wife… a caramel macchiato, please.”
Qin Changxin had been silent the whole time. Only after Shen Zhuo started the coffee machine did she whisper:
“So… that’s the god?”
“Mm. I actually never knew before that she was a god,” Lin Yanyu murmured back, glancing at the front door the sign on the glass read ‘Open’ facing inward, but the outer shutter was pulled down. Clearly, Shen Zhuo had prepared the space for this meeting.
“If she’s your acquaintance, then I’m at ease,” Qin Changxin said with a faint smile, looking around. “But what kind of place is a ‘cat café’? Why are there so many cats here?”
Lin Yanyu followed her gaze five cats were curiously watching them. A small, round calico cat met her eyes, meowed excitedly, and leapt onto her lap, rubbing affectionately against her clothes.
“A cat café is like a teahouse in this world,” Lin Yanyu explained, stroking the calico’s fur. “Only, instead of tea, they sell a drink called coffee. These little ones help people relax. I used to work part time here. Actually, they’re all demons some even fearsome beasts in true form but to humans, they’re just cute kittens who’ll cuddle up to you if you offer them a treat.”
She lifted the calico toward Qin Changxin.
“This one’s Yun Ruan, Boss Shen’s daughter. She’s always been clingy though she’s probably older than both of us by now.”
“How mean! Captain Lin, how can you still tease me about my age after getting married?” Yun Ruan flicked her tail against Lin Yanyu’s wrist and lightly hopped into Qin Changxin’s lap.
Qin Changxin had always liked cats, though since marrying Lin Yanyu, she hadn’t touched any others. Seeing this one so naturally settle on her knees, she looked at Lin Yanyu for reassurance.
“It’s fine,” Lin Yanyu laughed. “Cat demons here see their feline and human forms as separate identities. Go on her fur’s very soft.”
“Vanilla latte, caramel macchiato,” Shen Zhuo said, bringing the cups over.
Seeing Lin Yanyu reach for the sword, Shen Zhuo added calmly, “Have your coffee first. Everything else can wait.”
Qin Changxin raised her cup, admiring the delicate lattice of caramel on top, then whispered to Lin Yanyu for instructions before taking a small sip.
“Originally, Heaven planned to send a divine envoy to retrieve the Huixing Sword,” Shen Zhuo said after a while. “But since the sword was sealed in your demon realm, it’s best for locals to return it.”
She glanced at Lin Yanyu.
“Besides… you did want to come back and take one last look, didn’t you?”
“Please, just call me by name,” Lin Yanyu said, embarrassed to be addressed as ‘Captain.’ “I admit, yes, I did think of coming back. But I knew after crossing worlds that it wasn’t possible so it remained only a thought. I never imagined it’d actually happen.”
“You have twenty-three years of bonds with this world,” Shen Zhuo said. “And since it was the Huixing Sword that brought you here, this opportunity was granted. But even gods cannot allow ordinary beings to freely travel between realms so this will be your last chance to revisit your old world.”
“I understand,” Lin Yanyu said at once. “We won’t stay long. I’ll take Changxin to visit Doctor Liu, then to my master’s grave to pay respects, and we’ll leave.”
She did want to take Qin Changxin sightseeing, but she was officially listed as deceased here her records erased, her ID and belongings all destroyed in the fire that day.
“Your master…” Shen Zhuo began, then hesitated her words shifted midway “…Well, yes, the grass on her grave is quite tall. Remember to pull some when you visit.”
Lin Yanyu: “???”
It felt off, but she was used to her master and Shen Zhuo teasing each other, so she didn’t dwell on it.
After a bit more casual talk, Shen Zhuo took back the Huixing Sword and led them upstairs to the third-floor living quarters.
“Your old apartment was demolished,” Shen Zhuo explained. “The compensation funds, per your will, were donated to Dr. Liu Fenyun’s medical research foundation. All your belongings are here I packed them myself.”
“Thank you, Boss Shen.” Lin Yanyu and Qin Changxin saw her to the stairs, then turned back to look through the items.
“It’s strange, sorting through your own relics,” Lin Yanyu said wryly as she worked.
Qin Changxin chuckled softly and helped her.
At the bottom of one box, she suddenly found a thick notebook bound with a small lock.
“Is this your journal?” she asked curiously she remembered Lin Yanyu’s habit of keeping daily notes.
But Lin Yanyu frowned in surprise.
“No… mine didn’t have a lock… wait, the lock just”
As she spoke, the lock clicked open on its own and fell to the floor with a soft sound.
“Could it be Master’s diary?” Lin Yanyu murmured, picking it up. “Sorry, Master,” she said under her breath, and opened the book.
The very first line was dated the day she had first arrived in this world.
Her expression changed instantly. Qin Changxin leaned closer, and Lin Yanyu silently pulled her into reading along.
By the time they reached the last line, both were silent for a long while.
“So my master was Lord Siming,” Lin Yanyu whispered. “She knew I’d have to return someday that’s why she kept me from making too many friends here, afraid I’d form ties too deep to sever…”
Qin Changxin held her gently and patted her shoulder.
“I’m glad,” Lin Yanyu said quietly, “that our fate wasn’t something written by her but something that truly happened, in another life.”
She paused, looking up at her wife.
“Actually… I’ve been keeping a secret from you.”
She turned on the computer in the room, opened the old fiction website, and typed in a familiar book title but the search came up ‘No results found.’
Frowning, she tried searching the author’s name instead, and found the author’s profile.
The writer had only one book listed this one but the title was locked, shown only as a string of asterisks, marked “restricted for content cleansing.”
Lin Yanyu checked the upload dates and sighed.
“When I first came here, I thought I’d transmigrated into this novel right into the time when I first met you,” she said, pointing at the red-locked entry. “In the story, my character forced you into a master–servant blood pact, tortured you in body and heart… and was eventually killed by you. So from the very beginning, I tried to be good to you to avoid that ending.”
Qin Changxin listened quietly.
“But later, after everything we went through, I realized I truly loved you,” Lin Yanyu continued. “All I had inherited were memories up to the moment before that blood contract so to me, that book was just… a story that made my heart ache. Master never taught me how to love someone properly; everything I knew about love, I learned from those storybooks.”
She paused, shut the computer, and leaned into Qin Changxin’s arms.
“It was you who taught me what love really is and how to protect the one I love.”
Qin Changxin rested her chin atop Lin Yanyu’s head, rubbing gently against her cat-like ears.
“Now we’re together,” she murmured tenderly. “Husband and wife, bound for life. Let all the past mistakes and missed chances fade away.”
