- Chapter 71 - I'm the Real Victim Here
The apartment door opened to an empty living room. Ding Moyan immediately headed for the bedroom.
The pungent smell of potions filled the air, causing Ding Moyan and Ye Ye to frown as they stepped inside. What greeted them was Wang Ye collapsed on the floor, surrounded by a pool of blood.
Several shallow cuts marred Wang Ye’s wrists, stark against her pale skin, making the wounds appear even more gruesome.
Ye Ye, who had followed Ding Moyan inside, froze at the sight, her pupils dilating slightly. Her lips trembled.
What was this? A suicide attempt? But the depth of the cuts didn’t seem to match that.
Ye Ye sniffed, the foul odor flooding her nostrils and making her nauseous. She lifted her arm to cover her nose.
“Wang Ye,” Ding Moyan called her name, swiftly scooping her up and placing her on the bed. She rummaged through the medical kit on the shelf, pulling out the corresponding potion based on the system scan.
Fortunately, the wounds only looked severe. After drinking the enhanced Skin Repair Agent, the bleeding gradually stopped, and scabs began to form.
Ye Ye, however, wasn’t focused on Wang Ye. She bent down to pick up the dagger at her feet, weighing it in her hand. This was no ordinary dagger, it was the star item from an interstellar auction eleven years ago.
Phoenix Craving that was the dagger’s name.
Its hilt was intricately carved in a vintage style, while the blade was forged from the sharpest mineral known to date. Legend had it that this dagger was once blessed by an ancient phoenix. Its exquisite craftsmanship and auspicious symbolism had once driven countless omegas into a frenzy, with wealthy families competing fiercely to drive its price to unprecedented heights at the auction.
Ye Ye recalled that this dagger had been forcefully secured by General Klay Giyas back then.
Why was an item from the Gayas Family in Wang Ye’s possession?
Or was the renowned Gayas Family entangled with the Zou family? Taking it a step further had the Gayas Family also had a hand in the A-Grade Contraband Drug?
Ye Ye silently closed her eyes. Every interaction she’d had with Wang Ye at the Rose Workshop replayed in her mind like a slow-motion film.
Unremarkable, almost invisible that was the impression Ye Ye had of her.
Her lips curled downward as she let out a soft tsk, lazily leaning against the doorframe. Her fingers traced the patterns on the dagger’s hilt as she mused to herself.
Wang Ye was far more than she appeared, hiding secrets that would turn heads if revealed one by one.
Meanwhile, the protagonist of Ye Ye’s thoughts sat blankly on the bed. Her cheeks were gaunt and devoid of color. She wasn’t unconscious just sitting there with her head bowed, her dark eyes empty and unfocused.
“Wang Ye,” Ding Moyan called softly.
She kicked aside the shattered potion vials on the floor before walking to the window and pushing it open to air out the foul stench.
Whatever Ye Ye had guessed, Ding Moyan had pieced together as well.
Wang Ye’s abnormal behavior might be related to gland rejection. Both alpha and omega glands were unique.
When an ordinary beta was modified into an alpha or omega, the newly added gland much like a heart transplant could trigger rejection symptoms if it failed to integrate properly.
With this thought, Ding Moyan couldn’t help but worry about Zong Jia. The sudden disappearance of Zong Jia sent a ripple of unease through her heart. Although she believed the President’s level was high and her strength formidable making her unbeatable by most, what she feared most was unforeseen circumstances. If the President had left of her own accord, that would be one thing, but if she had been kidnapped or taken hostage, whoever could abduct Zong Jia would be no ordinary figure.
There might be some organization behind it, capable of snatching her during police custody. Drawing such attention to the police station surely meant the President had something valuable in her possession.
An A-Grade Contraband Drug, Ding Moyan didn’t think Zong Jia would hoard such a thing. Whether it was her trust in the President’s character or the candid conversations they’d had about potion-related issues, none of the signs pointed to someone who would commit such a serious crime.
The main family had more than one member, and subordinates or branch families could easily have access as well.
Some time had passed since she’d learned this news from Ye Ye. She needed to find Zong Jia before anyone else did. Opening the System Panel, Ding Moyan input the President’s personal information, initiating a comprehensive search even Zong Jia’s vital signs needed to be confirmed.
[Planetary Area loading.]
[Searching within Original Novel Character range.]
[No trace found on this planet. Character Zong Jia has left the planet. Last known location: Ding Family Residence, Southern District Fourth Hospital.]
Ding Moyan’s heart skipped a beat, her face instantly paling as panic surged through her. She abruptly stood up, startling Ye Ye, who had been idly surveying the room’s furnishings.
Ye Ye’s puzzled gaze settled on Ding Moyan.
Fortunately, the data that appeared next on the panel allowed Ding Moyan to exhale the breath she’d been holding in her chest.
[Character Zong Jia’s vital signs are stable.]
The system screen resembled a hospital monitor, displaying the President’s fluctuating data.
The President was still alive that was the best news for now.
Cold sweat dampened Ding Moyan’s back, soaking through her thin blouse. Her slender frame accentuated the delicate butterfly bones along her spine, which seemed to flutter like wings with every movement, strikingly eye-catching.
Ye Ye’s gaze burned with intensity. She knew it was inappropriate, but an inexplicable urge fought within her, her eyes repeatedly drawn to that sight. She licked her lips, her canines itching.
She wanted to devour this delectable little White Lotus.
Wang Ye’s focus gradually sharpened, beads of cold sweat forming on her forehead.
“What’s wrong?” Before she could even ask if Ding Moyan needed to go to the hospital, Wang Ye stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Ding Moyan’s neck, burying her fluffy head against her shoulder.
“Mo Yan, it hurts. Let me hold you.”
Could hugging someone really ease pain? Ding Moyan’s expression grew increasingly odd as she silently scoffed.
The scent of Green Tea invaded her nostrils. Ever since becoming an Omega, Wang Ye’s sense of smell had heightened a hundredfold especially when it came to others of the same gender. Even without pheromones being released, she could detect the subtlest traces.
Wang Ye’s nerves tensed, her eyes darkening as she glared at the unwanted presence. In the next moment, her arms tightened around Ding Moyan, her gaze turning as fierce as a territorial wolf defending its mate.
Noticing Ye Ye’s pursed lips and jealous expression, Wang Ye smirked challengingly and disdainfully behind Ding Moyan’s back, a petty but deliberate retaliation for how Ye Ye had bossed her and Ding Moyan around on the street before.
Ye Ye clenched her fists, her mouth forming a small “o” as she cried out, “Ding Moyan, look at her!”
“What?” Ding Moyan frowned slightly, turning halfway to look at Ye Ye.
Her lips, dry and pale, parted slightly as Wang Ye paled, shrinking back timidly as if frightened by Ye Ye. She leaned weakly against Ding Moyan’s chest, letting out faint, breathy whimpers from her throat.
The sight made Ye Ye’s fingers itch, her teeth grinding as she glared at Wang Ye with hostility. “Ding Moyan, she’s faking it.”
“I’m not, I really don’t feel well,” Wang Ye gasped softly, tears welling in her eyes, red and swollen like a startled little rabbit.
She looked utterly pitiful.
Ding Moyan’s heart ached at the sight she couldn’t stand seeing girls cry. Her ears automatically tuned out Ye Ye’s words as she clumsily patted Wang Ye’s trembling back.
“Moyan, stay with me.”
Ye Ye’s angry retort lodged in her throat, her chest heaving with rare frustration. For the first time, she found herself defeated by the “pitiful” act.
What could she even say in this situation? Should she compete with someone who slit their wrists in acting? No, she couldn’t.
Ye Ye rolled her eyes, speechless. She’d never known Wang Ye to be this dramatic before.
Knock, knock, knock. The door sounded.
Who? Who would come knocking at this hour?
Ding Moyan tucked Wang Ye under the covers and closed the bedroom door before heading to the entrance.
Wang Ye lifted her eyelids slightly, tilting her head to greedily watch Ding Moyan’s retreating figure. Her dark eyes were deep and unreadable, swirling with desire.
“Quit staring. Even if you keep looking, Ding Moyan has already marked the President,” Ye Ye said, her voice tinged with bitterness. But facing Wang Ye, she suppressed her jealousy toward the President, deliberately fanning the flames.
Wang Ye shifted her gaze to Ye Ye’s face. She wasn’t oblivious to Ye Ye’s little scheme, the story of the snipe and the clam fighting while the fisherman reaped the rewards was old news.
Her fingers whitened at the knuckles, though Ye Ye’s words did sting. With a disdainful scoff, she pulled the covers over her head.
Buried in the soft blankets, breathing in the lingering scent of White Lotus, Wang Ye’s tense nerves relaxed slightly.
Whether Zong Jia would even make it back alive was another matter entirely. She couldn’t afford to lose her composure now.
Through the surveillance screen outside the door, Ding Moyan saw two uniformed officers, one of whom she recognized from the Zong family. Mo Tang, wasn’t it?
A strange officer. Their first meeting had left a terrible impression, not to mention their negligence in losing the President.
Ding Moyan’s expression remained cold as she opened the door.
“Hello, Miss Ding,” Mo Tang spoke first.
“What brings you here?” Ding Moyan stood in the doorway, making no move to invite them inside.
“We’re investigating matters related to Zong Jia. We’d appreciate your cooperation,” Mo Tang said, emphasizing Zong Jia’s name.
“The details are rather private. We’d prefer to discuss this inside.”
Mo Tang’s sharp eyes scrutinized the young Alpha before her, her tone as icy as ever, leaving no room for refusal.
“…” Ding Moyan stared at her in silence before finally stepping aside to let them in.
“The Ye family’s young lady is here too,” Mo Tang remarked, spotting the girl emerging from the bedroom.
Ye Ye nodded. “Yes, I was consulting Moyan about a question on Mechanical Theory.”
She eyed their official demeanor. “What’s this about?”
“To understand matters related to Zong Jia, it’s fortunate Miss Ye is also here perfect for simultaneous questioning,” the intern stepped forward to explain.
“Oh, alright.”
The group settled on the living room sofa as the intern pulled out a small notebook to inquire about issues concerning Zong Jia’s Student Union at the Rose Workshop.
Wang Ye couldn’t afford to be discovered by the police right now, given her involvement in Zou Ye’s death. Who knew if the officers might suddenly investigate that?
Ding Moyan signaled Ye Ye to secretly hide Wang Ye in the dressing room’s partition just in case Mo Tang wandered into the bedroom unannounced, she wouldn’t easily be found.
Sitting beside her, Ye Ye grasped half the plan hide Wang Ye. Seizing the moment while Ding Moyan and the other two were chatting, she excused herself to fetch tea leaves and returned to the bedroom.
“Wang Ye.” Ye Ye pulled back the blanket, whispering urgently.
The person lying stiffly on the bed furrowed her brows slightly before opening her eyes to Ye Ye’s fierce expression.
“What do you want?”
Ye Ye: “The police are here.”
“Oh.” Wang Ye sat up weakly, leaning against the pillow. She pressed her chapped lips together, glaring coldly at Ye Ye.
Ye Ye gnawed at the inside of her cheek irritably, crossing her arms with a huff. “Hide. Now. Don’t cause trouble for Ding Moyan.”
Mo Tang quickly noticed something amiss. The cup on the side table was cold, its water nearly gone, and she detected a faint trace of Omega Suppression Relief Agent.
Omega Suppression Relief Agents only temporarily eased ruts, once the effect wore off, the cycle would resume, often more intensely. Typically used to heighten pleasure.
Mo Tang eyed the surroundings skeptically. She wasn’t stupid there was no way Ye Ye had come here to deal with her rut.
Her gaze lingered thoughtfully on the bedroom door.
Then she turned to Ding Moyan, studying her face for any reaction. “May we take a look inside your bedroom?”
Ding Moyan, preoccupied, flinched slightly at Mo Tang’s words, her fingers curling subtly beneath her sleeves. But the next moment, she regained composure, answering calmly, “Of course.”
As they reached the bedroom door, Ding Moyan deliberately pretended to slip, planning to buy time by feigning injury.
“Ah!”
She yelped, tilting backward, eyes squeezed shut in anticipation of the pain from the fall. Yet the expected impact never came.
Instead, she landed abruptly in a soft embrace.
Blinking open her eyes, Ding Moyan found herself staring at a pair of slender, strong arms wrapped around her waist. Dazed, she traced the elegant line of Mo Tang’s jaw.
“Be careful, Miss Ding.” Mo Tang’s expression remained impassive as she released Ding Moyan’s slender waist.
Her voice snapped Ding Moyan out of her daze. “Thank you,” she murmured, gaze flickering.
The bedroom door opened from inside.
Mo Tang glanced up. “Miss Ye, fetching tea leaves took this long?”
“Took a while to find them,” Ye Ye blocked the doorway, blinking rapidly as she waved the tea packet with a strained laugh, raising her voice to give Wang Ye more time to hide.
“I see.” Mo Tang moved past her, about to step inside, but Ye Ye shifted to block her path again.
Mo Tang frowned this only deepened her suspicion that something was hidden in the room.
As fellow Omegas, their noses were the most sensitive. The strong scent of Ding Moyan’s White Lotus on Mo Tang’s chest was enough to irritate her. How had the scent ended up there after just a few minutes apart?
Ye Ye said with a hint of jealousy, “As an Omega, why would you enter an Alpha’s room? That’s not appropriate, is it?”
“Miss Ye, you’re an Omega too, aren’t you?” The intern’s lips twitched slightly, implying she shouldn’t be so hypocritical.
Ignoring her, Mo Tang walked past Ye Ye and continued further inside. With a quick glance around, she noted the few hiding spots in the room. At her signal, the intern checked the changing area.
She approached the bed, where the blankets were bunched up in a shape that unmistakably resembled a person lying beneath. Mo Tang sneered as she lifted a corner of the quilt.
Ye Ye bit her lower lip nervously, picking at her nails. Why hide under the covers?
The quilt was thrown back, revealing a soft, elongated pillow in front of the four of them.
“…” Ding Moyan let out a sigh of relief on the spot.
“…” Ye Ye was full of questions. Not here?
Internally shocked, Ye Ye turned her head and bumped into Mo Tang. The two stared at each other in silence.
Ye Ye spoke up, “Officer Mo, don’t look at me. I don’t know anything.”
