- Chapter 68 - Token of Love
The crescent moon hung in the sky, dotted with stars, and its light slanted through the glass, casting a glow upon her, making her skin appear even paler.
“Moyan.” The voice was calm, tinged with a hint of nostalgia. It was Wang Ye who broke the silence first.
“Wang Ye.” Ding Moyan’s breath involuntarily quickened.
Wang Ye responded softly, “Mm.”
Wang Ye looked frail and weak, a sight that tugged at the heart at least in Ding Moyan’s eyes, Wang Ye had grown much thinner.
Concern flickered in Ding Moyan’s gaze. She still remembered what the doctor had said last time: Wang Ye’s body contained destructive elements from A-329, and until an antidote was found, she couldn’t leave the capsule.
She stepped closer, scrutinizing her. “Your body.”
Wang Ye’s icy fingers were enveloped by Ding Moyan’s warm palm. A faint smile graced Wang Ye’s lips, breathing life back into her pallid face.
“I’m fine now,” she said.
“Really?”
“Mm.” Wang Ye nodded. “Though I still need rest and some specially prepared injections.”
“That’s good to hear.”
With two confirmations, the tension in Ding Moyan’s spine eased. She smiled calmly and guided Wang Ye to sit on the bed, not daring to let her stand any longer.
“Come, sit down.”
No sooner had Wang Ye sat than a coughing fit seized her. Panic flashed in Ding Moyan’s eyes as she poured a glass of warm water and handed it to Wang Ye, gently patting her back while watching her anxiously.
Wang Ye took a sip. “It’s nothing, don’t worry.”
After a while, Wang Ye seemed to recover somewhat. She steadied her breathing and set the glass on the nightstand.
At that moment, Ding Moyan seemed to recall something. She asked softly, “Wang Ye, there’s something I’ve been wondering, why did you disappear from the hospital?”
“Why I disappeared.” Wang Ye’s delicate lashes fluttered slightly. “Technically, I was rescued. If I’d stayed any longer that night, I probably would have died there.”
“By whom?”
Wang Ye’s expression darkened. Weakly, she shook her head, unwilling to elaborate.
Ding Moyan pressed her lips together. Seeing Wang Ye’s troubled expression, she feared touching on a painful subject and didn’t push further.
“Moyan.”
“Mm?”
“Did you mark the President?”
Wang Ye’s long lashes lowered, casting faint shadows beneath her eyes. Her knuckles whitened as she finally voiced the question that had weighed on her mind for so long the very reason she had sought Ding Moyan out ahead of time.
Her voice was barely audible. Though anger simmered beneath the surface as she asked, she knew she had no right to feel it.
She truly couldn’t compare to that outstanding Omega.
Ding Moyan met her gaze and nodded. “Yes.”
As she nodded, her thoughts were in disarray not because she needed to hide anything, but because looking at Wang Ye made her heart race with nervousness.
Recalling how, soon after transmigrating into this body, she had recklessly flirted with Wang Ye, Ding Moyan suddenly felt a pang of guilt toward the President, and toward Wang Ye for all those irresponsible words she had spoken.
The President and Wang Ye, a double wave of remorse crashed over Ding Moyan’s mind.
Wang Ye gripped Ding Moyan’s wrist, her dark eyes boring into hers.
“Was it just because she’s an Omega?” Wang Ye’s voice grew fiercer as she spoke. With one hand, she yanked open her collar, the force so strong that the top button of her white shirt snapped off.
The gland on the back of her neck was exposed, and with her consent, the rich scent of chocolate spilled forth.
Wang Ye sobbed, “If that’s the case, now that I’m also an Omega, can’t you like me?”
Gland! Ding Moyan’s cheeks flushed crimson as she quickly turned away, covering her eyes with one hand.
She silently recited the mantra in her heart: See no evil, see no evil.
“You! Wang Ye, pull your clothes back on,” Ding Moyan said through clenched teeth, her eyes tightly shut.
“Afraid to look?” Wang Ye’s voice was bitter. “Ding Moyan.”
She already knew Ding Moyan’s choice, yet she still couldn’t accept it.
Wang Ye loosened her grip, but just as Ding Moyan tried to pull away, she suddenly stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Ding Moyan’s waist and burying her face in her chest.
“……” Ding Moyan stiffened, utterly at a loss.
The scent of chocolate flooded her nostrils, snapping Ding Moyan back to reality. She tried to push Wang Ye away. “Wa-Wang Ye.”
“Let, let go.”
But Wang Ye held on tightly. Ding Moyan didn’t dare use too much force after all, the physical differences between an Alpha and an Omega were stark. An Omega’s body was fragile, and the slightest carelessness could break her wrist.
The newly formed gland at the back of her neck, along with the rich, velvety chocolate scent, reminded Ding Moyan that Wang Ye was now undeniably an Omega.
A Beta turning into an Omega, it was the experiment recorded in that book.
And Wang Ye had gone through with it.
“Don’t push me, Moyan.”
“Let me hold you. I won’t do anything else,” Wang Ye pleaded miserably, tightening her embrace as if afraid Ding Moyan would struggle free again.
Hearing this, Ding Moyan relented, unsure of what to do.
“Just let me hold you.”
Wang Ye’s voice grew softer, eventually fading to a whisper.
Ding Moyan hesitated, but after a few minutes, Wang Ye reluctantly let go.
Ding Moyan immediately turned away, covering her face, inwardly berating herself she really had no face left to see the President now. She really was acting like a scumbag.
“Moyan.”
The voice came from behind her. Ding Moyan lowered her own voice and instinctively shifted away. “What is it, Wang Ye?”
“Don’t go,” Wang Ye reached out and grabbed Ding Moyan’s wrist. “I’m sleepy.”
Ding Moyan frowned slightly, meeting Wang Ye’s deer-like gaze. After a pause, she relented. “Then sleep.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll sleep in the living room,” Ding Moyan said. “Alright, you can let go now.”
“I’m afraid of the dark.”
Ding Moyan sighed. “There’s a light.”
“I’m afraid of sleeping alone.”
Ding Moyan: “……”
Seeing the shifting emotions in Ding Moyan’s eyes, Wang Ye compromised. “Can you at least watch me fall asleep? I’ll drift off quickly, and then you can leave.”
All Ding Moyan wanted was to escape to the living room for a cigarette to ease the tension. She agreed. “Fine.”
Night deepened, the minute hand of the wall clock passing the halfway mark.
Ding Moyan showed no signs of sleepiness. She quietly watched as the figure on the bed breathed steadily, only turning off the light and leaving the bedroom once she was certain Wang Ye was truly asleep.
The room plunged back into darkness.
Wang Ye opened her eyes, resting her head on the soft pillow, which still carried the faint scent of White Lotus. Her hands clenched, crescent-shaped nails digging into her palms. Unaware of the pain, she let out a low, hollow laugh.
By the end, her throat itched, and she coughed weakly. A thick, metallic taste surged up blood. Unable to hold it back, droplets stained the pristine white sheets.
The sun was shining brightly on the lush green grass, where several small children sat on a pink blanket playing house.
Where was this?
A dream?
Ding Moyan stood on the grass, a small table beside her laden with cookies and sweets.
She picked one up and took a bite, it was surprisingly tasty.
So, was this a dream? She could actually eat in a dream?
A little girl with a ponytail said enviously, “Ding Bai, your dad is so nice to you. Not like mine she doesn’t even like me.”
Ding Bai!
Hearing the name, Ding Moyan turned to look at the other side, where a miniature version of a little girl in a floral dress, about seven or eight years old, bore the same haughty and irritating expression as Ding Bai.
Their childhood.
Ding Moyan stepped closer, but they seemed oblivious to her presence, chatting among themselves.
“Of course, Yu Sisi. He’s my real dad, of course he treats me well.” Ding Bai lifted her chin, looking down her nose with smug satisfaction.
“I’m so jealous, Ding Bai,” Yu Sisi said. “By the way, has Ding Moyan arrived yet?”
Ding Bai’s pretty little face darkened. “Don’t mention her.”
“Ding Bai, it seems you really hate your sister. Me too, I can’t stand my siblings either,” a girl in a leather skirt said with disgust. “It’s actually ridiculous. I have a twin sister, but she looks nothing like me. She grew up on a filthy Abandoned Planet ugly, with vulgar manners.”
A noble girl beside her chimed in, “That sounds absolutely dreadful.”
“She’s coming to the party today,” the girl in the leather skirt added. “Somehow, she managed to get an invitation.”
“Hmph, don’t worry, Zou Zou. We’ll teach her a lesson. I can’t stand country bumpkins, who knows what germs she’s brought from that Abandoned Planet?”
Zou Zou hesitated. “But my father’s here. Maybe we shouldn’t.”
“Oh, heavens, Zou Zou, you’re too kind.”
“Don’t worry, Zou Zou. It’s just a little prank nothing serious.”
Zou Zou, Zou Ye? So the one they were bullying was Wang Ye?
A pang of discomfort twisted in Ding Moyan’s chest. She averted her gaze and walked away, unwilling to watch any further.
“Look, she’s here.”
“Keep it down, don’t give it away.”
“Here, try this. It’s really good,” Ding Bai said with ill intent.
Ding Moyan bit her pale lips, suppressing the tangled mess of emotions inside.
She steeled herself, muttering under her breath: Don’t react, don’t react.
“Ah!” The little girl coughed violently from the spice.
Someone burst into laughter. “She actually ate all that wasabi without realizing it!”
“After what Zou Zou said, I didn’t believe it at first, but she really is that ugly.”
“Look at her dress, it’s like something from years ago.”
“With a face like that, no one will ever want her,” the noble girls jeered, mocking the little girl mercilessly.
Ding Moyan couldn’t take it anymore. If she could eat the pastries, then surely she could also punch Ding Bai and the others.
She turned, ready to stand up for Wang Ye.
“What are you doing? Ding Bai, are you insane?” Suddenly, a child dropped down from a tree, pulling the little girl behind her in a protective stance.
She looked like a miniature version of herself.
Ding Bai sneered without hesitation. “Ding Moyan, since when do you hang out with freaks?”
“Does bullying others give you a special sense of achievement?” Little Ding Moyan arrogantly glared at Ding Bai. “Whether someone gets married in the future is none of your damn business. Why are you meddling so much? Could it be you’re already eager to share Father’s burdens by arranging an early marriage alliance?”
“You!” The words caught in Ding Bai’s throat, his chest tight with anger.
“Let’s go. Don’t mind those lunatics.” Little Moyan pulled the little girl away to another spot.
Ding Moyan grew increasingly uneasy. A sense of foreboding tightened in her chest as she followed the two figures.
Only when they reached the small lakeside did little Moyan release the girl’s hand.
“Hey! What’s your name?” Little Moyan tugged at the girl’s braid and asked.
The little girl sniffled. “Wang Ye.”
The bad premonition was about to be confirmed. As Ding Moyan saw the girl’s face, her heart skipped a beat.
Sure enough, the mischievous little Moyan pinched the girl’s cheeks and declared, “You won’t be unwanted. When we grow up, I’ll marry you.”
“W-what? You, marry me?” The little girl was so startled she nearly bit her tongue Little Moyan placed her hands on her hips and nodded seriously. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
“Here, this is for you.” Despite her young age, little Moyan had a strong sense of ceremony. She slipped the Buddhist beads from her wrist wrapped twice around due to her slender arms onto Wang Ye’s wrist. “A token of love. As long as you have this, I can never run away.”
