- Chapter 67 - Chocolate Scented
“Ying Shu, did you know all along?” Zong Mu’s fury burned away his reason as he crushed the porcelain teacup in his hand, blood seeping between his fingers.
Gritting his teeth, his eyes bloodshot and venomous, Zong Mu refused to believe in coincidences. There were never so many coincidences in the world for him to stumble upon.
“Why so angry? You’re from the Zong family after all, shouldn’t you be more composed and noble than the rest of us?” Ying Shu slumped her shoulders lazily, feigning concern in a way that might fool an outsider.
Watching as Zong Mu’s pheromones flared in rage, Ying Shu shrugged indifferently. “One thing I can tell you this matter has nothing to do with me. I’ve always been about amusement, and this is just unnecessary trouble for me.”
Without waiting for Zong Mu’s response, she yawned. “Alright, I’ve got things to handle. I’ll take my leave.”
Ying Shu pushed the door open and stepped out. Zong Mu stood, about to call her back, but the words died in his throat.
His hands fell limp, eyelids lowering. The truth was laid bare before him, what more could he struggle to change?
Ying Shu walked back under her umbrella, the sky still overcast with a light drizzle.
She stepped into a waterlogged puddle, splashing mud up her leg, but her irritation wasn’t solely due to the weather. It stemmed from the news that she would soon be taking over Zong Jia’s responsibilities.
Though her mood was foul, a trace of surprise flickered in her eyes.
The Student Union President didn’t just oversee tasks within the Engineering Institute. From what she knew, every year, the President managed several energy stone mines, including planetary extraction.
The benefits were immense, but so were the risks. The lucrative power held by the President had long been a thorn in the royal family’s side.
Ying Shu wasn’t one to willingly entangle herself in danger. Her gaze darkened.
Her grip on the umbrella faltered, tilting it slightly. The fine rain dampened her jet-black hair, stray strands clinging to her cheeks.
Raindrops blurred her vision as they fell into her eyes. She rubbed them briefly before tightening her hold on the umbrella.
Her slender frame seemed frail and solitary as she walked along the bustling street.
A call came through. Seeing the caller ID, Ying Shu schooled her troubled expression and quickly moved to a secluded spot to answer.
Leaning against the damp wall, she scanned the quiet surroundings warily, her voice low. “Where are you?”
“Running away like this, who do you expect to clean up your mess?”
“Or do you want to become the next A-701?” Her voice cracked with self-mockery as she spoke.
After a pause, whatever was said on the other end left her momentarily dazed. She sighed deeply before warning, “Don’t do anything reckless again. Mo Tang has already noticed something’s off.”
“We don’t have time to waste on this.”
Her grip on the phone tightened. Lowering her eyes, she pressed her lips together and silently mouthed, “There’s no time left.”
“Ye Ye, I, I…”
“I, I l-love.” A pink letter adorned with a heart was thrust toward the girl. The boy, head bowed, stammered nervously, his lips trembling.
Ye Ye didn’t even lift her eyelids or glance at the young boy in front of her as she brushed past him.
She shut the door to the activity room, cutting off the overconfessed admirer.
“Wow! Ye Ye, you’ve got quite the charm!”
“From a distance, I could see you being stopped by that little Beta. What happened this time? Couldn’t even bother with a polite rejection?” Yu Sisi drawled in surprise. Normally, Ye Ye was gentle with her admirers even when turning them down, she had a hundred ways to let them down easy without outright dismissing them and bruising their pride.
“What’s on your mind, Ding Moyan?” Seeing Ye Ye approach with a troubled expression before slumping listlessly onto the table, Yu Sisi poked her shoulder.
Biting her lower lip, Yu Sisi ventured a bold guess: “It’s not because of Ding Moyan, is it?”
When Ye Ye didn’t respond, Yu Sisi shook her head. This girl was hopelessly hung up on Ding Moyan.
“You’re out of luck. Ding Moyan has marked the President. Given her personality now, she won’t abandon the Omega she’s claimed.” Yu Sisi mercilessly laid out the facts. As a friend, she felt obliged to remind Ye Ye once more. “Not to mention, the President’s status is right there.”
Ye Ye’s eyes reddened slightly, her face paling a shade.
“Should’ve made your move sooner.” Yu Sisi shrugged regretfully, her tone carrying a hint of schadenfreude.
Her words struck true, chilling Ye Ye’s already cold heart further, as if icy water had been poured over it repeatedly. No matter how much she thought about it, she never expected someone as unattainable as Zong Jia to get involved with Ding Moyan.
Ding Bai remained silent, not uttering a word. She shared the same feelings as Ye Ye, it was hard to believe that Ding Moyan and the President she respected had ended up together.
She sat quietly at the small table, mechanically eating the delicious dessert in her hand, though it tasted like wax.
If Ding Moyan and the President were together, and if the Zong family interfered, her chances of taking control of the Ding family in the future would be slim to none.
Yu Sisi said, “Ye Ye, there are plenty of good Alphas out there. And if not Alphas, Betas are great too. That shy little guy from earlier seemed pretty sweet, a real adorable pup.”
“If he’s so great, why don’t you go for him?” Ye Ye shot back gloomily, glaring at Yu Sisi, who was acting as if none of this concerned her.
“Well, he’d have to like me first,” Yu Sisi’s voice trailed off. The next moment, she clutched her chest as if her own words had stabbed her in the heart.
Now she was filled with regret, why had she opened her big mouth to console this heartless friend?
“You’re such a jerk, Ye Ye,” Yu Sisi grumbled.
Ye Ye’s lips twitched coldly. “Just shut up already.”
“Come on, cheer up.”
Ye Ye let out a couple of disgruntled hums before retreating back into her shell.
After days of rain, today was finally sunny.
At noon, sunlight streamed through the windows, filling the room with warmth and comfort.
Yu Sisi leaned against the glass, basking in the gentle rays. Glancing at Ye Ye, who was lost in thought, she realized Ye Ye seemed to have reached a point where it was Ding Moyan or nothing, a tough situation to handle.
A few seconds later, Yu Sisi lifted her head and earnestly suggested, “How about you just kidnap her? Lock her up, tie her down some good old-fashioned forced romance?”
Ye Ye turned her head: “…”
Now that Yu Sisi mentioned it, the idea did flicker through her mind.
This method doesn’t seem entirely impossible, but isn’t it illegal? Didn’t Interstellar Law, Article 1600, state that imprisoning an Alpha, Beta, or Omega warrants a sentence of three years or more?
Ding Bai’s expression turned odd. The things Yu Sisi mentioned weren’t ideas she hadn’t considered in relation to Ding Moyan. But the moment she pictured chains around Ding Moyan’s neck, wrists, and ankles, she shook her head inwardly that was way too extreme.
Snapping back to reality, Ding Bai pressed her lips into a flat line and smacked a book onto Yu Sisi’s head with a stern expression. “Shut up.”
Taking one look at Ding Bai’s face, Yu Sisi covered her head and immediately fell silent.
With Yu Sisi and Ye Ye’s noisy chatter gone, the air grew much quieter.
Ding dong!
You have a new email.
A notification popped up on Ding Bai’s phone. She skimmed the contents, her expression flickering imperceptibly. “The Zong family was found with a stash of A- potions.”
“Huh?!” Yu Sisi’s face was full of disbelief, this news had caught her completely off guard.
“Wait, how did you find out, Boss?”
“Vice President Karina sent the email. It details the situation.” Ding Bai briefly summarized the message for the two in front of her.
The gist was that Mo Tang had searched the Zong family and their affiliated businesses and actually uncovered something. Hidden near the artificial hot springs in the Zong family’s main residence was a large quantity of A- potions, varied in type and enough to warrant jail time.
Finally, Ding Bai added, “Don’t spread this.”
Yu Sisi nodded eagerly. “Mhm, mhm, mhm.”
Ye Ye mused, “If the Zong President gets locked up, I recall she’s already an adult, right?”
Yu Sisi caught the undertone in Ye Ye’s words: She’s gloating! Minors might get detention, but adults? Straight to prison.
“It’s getting late, and we haven’t had lunch yet. Let’s go.” Ding Bai checked the time, stood up, and made it clear she didn’t want to discuss this further.
Ye Ye: “Mhm.”
Yu Sisi noticed the gloom on Ye Ye’s face lighten considerably upon hearing the President might be jailed.
Amused, she leaned in slowly and whispered mischievously into Ye Ye’s ear, “Actually, if you want to be with Ding Moyan, it’s not like there’s no way.”
Ye Ye glanced sideways at her. “Oh?”
“Sweet little Ye Ye, goodnight! In dreams, anything’s possible. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even get married in one.” Yu Sisi grinned meaningfully as she smoothed out the wrinkles on Ye Ye’s collar.
Ye Ye swatted her hand away, face scrunched up. “Piss off.”
Yu Sisi rubbed her reddened hand, letting out a weird chuckle. Her eyes flickered toward a small figure waiting in the distance. “Look, that boy’s so devoted.”
Ye Ye shot her a glare. “You’ve been extra annoying lately.”
“Huh? Have I?” Yu Sisi blinked innocently. Seeing Ye Ye’s icy expression, she sobered up and patted her back seriously. “Alright, no more jokes. You don’t like that boy, right? If not, go reject him politely. Don’t give him the cold shoulder, he doesn’t owe us anything. Bring back your old energy and that sweet-talk of yours. The Student Union’s unstable right now. We can’t afford to leave a bad impression.”
Ding Moyan pulled open the door to a pitch-black room, the faint bitterness of chocolate lingering in the air.
Ding Moyan’s expression turned stern as her nose twitched, catching a faint unfamiliar scent. Her hand stealthily moved to the shoe cabinet, grabbing a palm-sized decorative porcelain plate that had been placed on the bedside table.
The plate had enough weight to draw blood if smashed against someone’s skull. Steadying her breath, she flicked on the lights.
With a click, the room illuminated, revealing an empty living room. Ding Moyan’s brows furrowed almost imperceptibly as she took careful steps forward, intending to thoroughly check each room in the house.
Pushing open the bedroom door,
She saw a slender, frail figure sitting on the bed.
The person was half-turned, long hair cascading down and obscuring most of their face. The dim lighting made it hard to see clearly, but from a distance, the figure appeared hunched over, seemingly weak.
At the sound of the door, the figure stirred, rising from the soft mattress. Slowly, they turned to face the disturbance, delicate fingers rolling a smooth sandalwood prayer bead between them.
Ding Moyan’s pupils dilated slightly.
Clatter!
The porcelain plate slipped from her grasp, shattering on the floor.
