- Chapter 21 - Teammates with Ulterior Motives
Ding Moyan pondered silently. She had originally wanted to name their team something like “Balala” or “Dancing Fairy Girls.”
“Isn’t it nice?” As a woman deeply fond of magical anime, Ding Moyan thought the name was perfect.
The others exchanged glances before shaking their heads at her.
Using “Magical Girls” as their team name just sounded incredibly silly and childish.
“Fine.” Ding Moyan pressed her lips together, a little disappointed.
Ding Bai averted his gaze. “This game has an in-built shop. There are team name change cards for sale.”
“Exactly, I also think we should change the team name,” Yu Sisi said as she scrolled through the shop, finding the price for the name change card. “It costs 3,555 Experience Points. I also saw Ghost Amulets in there, they can block a Ghost’s fatal attack. Each one costs 1,000 Experience Points. I think everyone should buy one.”
“Ghost Amulets, those are definitely worth getting,” Ding Moyan agreed, flipping through the in-game shop panel. “Ways to earn Experience Points: killing. Each kill is initially worth 1,000 Experience Points.”
Wang Ye frowned. “One kill is 1,000? So… we’d need to kill three people?”
“After forming a team, failing to complete personal or team missions or getting killed by Ghosts will result in elimination. However, being killed by another player won’t lead to death you’ll just respawn in a random location. The more times you die, the longer the respawn time.”
Yu Sisi noticed a small line of text at the bottom of the shop description, easy to miss if not looked at carefully. She read aloud, “If that’s the case, does this mean the 40 participants have to kill each other to earn Experience Points, just so they can buy items from the shop to protect themselves from Ghosts and avoid elimination?”
Ding Moyan asked, “Aside from us, will the others know about this?”
“That depends on luck whether they’re sharp-eyed or not,” Yu Sisi replied, polishing her handgun. Coincidentally, her personal mission required her to take out ten players.
Ding Moyan passed the team mission slip she had drawn to Yu Sisi, who was sitting beside her. “I checked our team mission, we need to blow up the dam marked on the map. And we’ll need Experience Points to buy ammunition from the shop.”
“First, we’ll earn enough to buy Ghost Amulets, then ammunition, and finally the team name change card,” Yu Sisi said before passing the slip to the next person.
Ding Bai gave a soft hum and turned to hand it to Ye Ye, only to find that Ye Ye had already moved to the window, fiddling with the telescope they had just acquired.
“Ye Ye, what are you looking at?”
“At a bunch of Experience Points,” Ye Ye replied, lowering the telescope, a strange smile curling at her lips.
The game environment adjusted to nighttime, and a light drizzle began to fall.
Gathered on the top floor of the office building, the group immediately huddled together upon hearing Ye Ye’s words.
“Five people. That Beta wearing the rabbit hat looks weak, easy pickings. The rest are Alphas, strong and not easy to deal with,” Yu Sisi recommended after taking a look through Ye Ye’s telescope.
“They’ve already entered this office building,” Yu Sisi reported. “Should we make a move?”
Ye Ye looked almost eager. “I think we should. But if we’re going to kill, we might as well take them all out. Five thousand Experience Points just enough for each of us to get a Ghost Amulet.”
Ding Bai also agreed. She gripped her whip and instinctively laid out the plan: “Ye Ye, you’re agile. Follow Ding Moyan to lure those four Alphas and wear them down first. The remaining Betas will be handled by Wang Ye using Invisibility to get close and earn enough points. Yu Sisi and I will ambush them from the shadows.”
Ding Moyan didn’t object. She pulled out a broom as tall as herself from her storage bag, pondering how to wield it in battle though she feared the enemy might just shoot her down with a hail of bullets.
“Yu Sisi, lend me your 94F,” Ye Ye poked Yu Sisi with a telescope.
“No way. I need it for the ambush later.”
“Then how am I supposed to lure them? With this telescope?” Ye Ye’s reward this time was just an ordinary telescope, devoid of any physical weaponry.
“Use this.” Ding Bai handed over her second reward.
It was a Swallowtail Dart, which, according to Ding Bai, was coated with a toxin that could temporarily paralyze nerves and halt movement.
Wang Ye listened intently, already donning her Cloak.
“This was that black-cloaked man’s weapon. Might as well put it to use,” Yu Sisi said, handing the bow she’d scavenged from the black-cloaked man to Ding Moyan. She made a throat-slitting gesture. “Long-range attack. Buy us some time, and the boss and I will find their weak spots to finish them off.”
“Got it.”
Ding Moyan hefted the bow, finally armed with something decent. She felt a flicker of anticipation for what was to come.
“Captain, we’re definitely taking first place this time,” the rabbit-hatted Beta boasted, clutching medical supplies.
The bald leader growled, “Don’t underestimate the enemy.”
“Captain, I checked. The other three teams are a joke, one’s a bunch of blind and crippled invalids, another’s mostly useless Omegas, and the last lost their main force and had to scrape together a ragtag team. None of them can match our coordination,” the rabbit-hatted Beta argued confidently. “We’ll be the first to clear this new Nationwide Escape game.”
The bald man couldn’t help but smirk in agreement.
They arrived at an office building with a spacious interior, high ceilings, and a mezzanine level connected by stairs. The area was eerily quiet, but the faint scent of blood lingered in the air.
The bald leader’s instincts flared. “Ambush!” he shouted.
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!
Subtle sounds teased his nerves as his arm muscles tensed. Three Swallowtail Darts shot down from above, one striking a slower teammate in the arm. The toxin quickly numbed the limb, and his weapon clattered to the ground.
Footsteps grew louder from the stairwell.
The remaining members drew their weapons, the bald leader gripping his curved blade, eyes locked on the doorway.
Ding Moyan and Ye Ye emerged, one wielding a longbow, the other twirling a glowing green Swallowtail Dart.
“Rabbit, never underestimate Omegas. They can surprise you,” the bald leader mused, taken aback that the first team bold enough to confront them was the Omega squad. He raised his blade toward the two young women.
The rabbit-hatted Beta snorted derisively. “Coming here to die.”
How arrogant…
Ye Ye’s eyes gleamed with malice, yet she let out a series of eerie giggles. Mid-laughter, she flung several Swallowtail Darts toward the rabbit-hatted Beta.
The bald man swiftly raised his blade to block the sudden sneak attack.
“Since you’ve made the first move, we won’t hold back either,” the bald man growled, his expression darkening as he brandished his sword, ready to teach these two girls a lesson.
Ding Moyan nocked an arrow, fired a shot, then hurled an iron chain to the second floor. Swiftly scaling it, she secured the high ground to continue her barrage.
Ye Ye leaped from table to table with agile grace, tossing Swallowtail Darts as she moved.
The skirmish escalated rapidly.
Seizing the opportunity, Wang Ye activated her invisibility Cloak and stealthily approached the rabbit Beta from behind her target was this young man.
Beneath the black Cloak, a dagger inched toward the boy’s throat.
A swift strike thud the blade pierced his windpipe, snuffing out his life in an instant.
[Player An Ruan has been assassinated by Player Wang Ye. Resurrection time: 5 minutes. Revival location: Central Plaza.]
[Congratulations to Player Wang Ye for earning 1000 Experience Points.]
The loud announcement echoed across the entire floor, momentarily stunning the combatants.
By the time the bald man regained his bearings, Ding Moyan’s broomstick smashed square into his face.
Enraged, he finally managed to climb up and swung his curved blade straight at Ding Moyan’s head.
With Ding Moyan keeping him occupied, Yu Sisi, hidden in the shadows, raised her handgun, aiming for the brute’s skull ready to execute their plan one by one.
But Ding Bai stepped forward and pressed down on Yu Sisi’s gun. Frowning in confusion, Yu Sisi turned to glare at the person behind her.
Ding Bai’s lips curled faintly, his cold gaze sweeping over her. A sudden chill ran down Yu Sisi’s spine, an inexplicable dread.
