- Chapter 20 - The Magical Girl Team
Ding Moyan let out a dry chuckle, her movements seemingly practiced as she started the engine and shifted gears.
Just as Ding Bai settled into the backseat, her body suddenly stiffened. Her gaze slowly shifted to the driver’s seat. Since when did Ding Moyan know how to drive? They had lived under the same roof in that villa, yet she had never seen Ding Moyan behind the wheel before.
Ding Bai’s right eyelid twitched incessantly, her palms slick with sweat. A foreboding sense of dread churned in her gut.
Could it be, she was forcing it?
Before Ding Bai could finish the thought, the car had already lurched forward.
She buckled her seatbelt and spoke up, “Ding Moyan, I don’t remember you knowing how to drive.”
“Huh? She doesn’t.” Yu Sisi’s expression was indescribable as she turned her head uneasily. “Ding Moyan, don’t screw us over here.”
Ding Moyan steadied her guilty conscience, her face calm. “Relax, I’ll get you to the destination.”
The system maliciously added for her, [But no guarantees about arriving with all limbs intact.]
Unfortunately, Ding Bai and the others couldn’t see the system’s resentment, otherwise, they’d rather be eliminated than step foot in this death trap.
“Oh, but Mo Yan drove here just fine earlier! See, she’s totally unharmed!” Ye Ye curved her lips sweetly, heaping on the praise. “We should trust Sister Mo Yan!”
Ding Bai scowled, automatically leaning against the window and turning her face away, refusing to look at this infuriating idiot.
The hover car traveled ten meters without incident, and Yu Sisi, sitting in the front, couldn’t help but exhale in relief.
But reality was cruel to their hopeful delusions.
With a loud thud, the car jolted violently, shaking everyone back to their senses.
“Ding Moyan, turn! There’s a wall ahead!” Yu Sisi screamed.
Ding Moyan’s eyes remained fixed on the road as she yanked the steering wheel only to overcorrect and spin the car back around.
“Ding Moyan, don’t accelerate, that’s the gas pedal!”
Yu Sisi, sitting shotgun, felt like she was racing against death itself. Being in the front seat, the terror hit her harder than the others. In less than a minute, Ding Moyan had nearly given her multiple heart attacks with near-miss collisions.
Yu Sisi’s teeth chattered, tears spilling uncontrollably as her trembling fingers clutched the door handle. She was seriously considering jumping out to escape.
“The bridge ahead is broken!”
Ding Moyan stomped on the gas, sending the car flying over the gap before landing with a screech executing a signature “Ding Moyan Drift” onto the opposite lane.
Ye Ye, who hadn’t bothered with her seatbelt, slammed her head against the roof as her stomach churned violently.
Ding Bai smirked, her eyes glinting with schadenfreude. “Keep trusting your ‘Sister Mo Yan.’ Maybe buckle up next time.”
After multiple violent bumps, the overpowering stench of gasoline finally proved too much for Ye Ye’s weak stomach. She wretched uncontrollably.
“!” Ding Bai scooted away, her mild germaphobia flaring up. “Stay the hell away from me.”
Wang Ye pitifully huddled in the corner of the car. Thankfully, she had fastened her seatbelt, sparing her from Ye Ye and Yu Sisi’s misery.
Miraculously, the hover car limped its way to the destination. Perhaps its erratic, zigzagging path through Central Square was too eye-catching, drawing curious stares from other players.
Ding Moyan hastily flung the door open and rushed to the central platform to input their names along with their team name barely completing the registration before the final second.
[Players Ding Moyan, Wang Ye, Ding Bai, Ye Ye, and Yu Sisi have successfully formed a team.]
[Countdown ended.]
[Current survivors: 20. Teams remaining: 4.]
Ding Bai took a moment to steady herself before stepping out of the car, fastening the team’s red emblem badge to her chest.
They arrived the latest and were left with badges of this color red, a hue that evoked both love and hate.
Symbolizing warmth and passion, yet also carrying ominous signs of danger and bloodshed.
Yu Sisi gasped in distress, “I really boarded a pirate ship.”
“Wait for me, Yu Sisi.” Ye Ye weakly leaned against the car door, vomiting a little more before taking in fresh air.
Only the two of them remained. Yu Sisi grabbed Ye Ye’s arm and pulled her toward the gathering point. “Hurry up, let’s go.”
[Player Ding Moyan has completed the main quest: Team Formation.]
[Congratulations, player has obtained a broom.]
[Broom Description: This is a broom. Yes, as you can see, it is an ordinary broom.]
A bamboo-woven broom fell to the ground. Ding Moyan picked it up, weighed it in her hands a couple of times, and then stored it in her game panel inventory under the gaze of her teammates.
“M-Mo Yan, is this your reward?” Wang Ye clutched her newly acquired ‘dagger.’
She glanced at Ding Moyan, thinking how unlucky she was.
Ding Moyan felt a pang of bitterness. A gun without bullets could at least be reloaded with ammunition taken from others, but what use was this broom? She’d have preferred an iron rod.
At least that would be more practical.
[Ding dong]
[Congratulations to all players for successfully forming a team and obtaining entry qualifications for the game.]
[Players have one hour to complete team tasks and individual tasks. Failure in the team task results in the entire team being eliminated, while failure in the individual task leads to personal elimination.]
[The remaining players will advance to the next round of the game.]
This aligned exactly with Yu Sisi’s earlier speculation. Ding Moyan bit her lip, fingers rubbing against the red badge. The badge was oval-shaped, purely colored, if anything, it could be called a red gemstone.
The gemstone was a vivid crimson. Ding Moyan held it up close and could see clearly through it, though everything in the background appeared red, as if engulfed in flames, an undeniably ominous sight.
[Ghosts will begin spawning in ten minutes. Players, please use this time to hide.]
[Countdown begins]
[1:00:00]
[00:59:59]
“Run!” Yu Sisi shouted.
Ding Moyan suggested, “Take the car?” After all, having transportation would be faster.
Ding Bai proposed, “Let’s walk.”
Ye Ye answered without hesitation, “+1.”
She didn’t consider herself particularly delicate, but she couldn’t stand Ding Moyan’s driving. The taste of bile still lingered in her mouth.
Yu Sisi, the representative of the “No Pirate Ship” movement, agreed, “+1.”
Was her driving really that bad? She didn’t feel anything wrong in fact, she found it exhilarating.
Didn’t these people find it thrilling and fun?
Ding Moyan’s gaze fell on Wang Ye, hoping her words might offer some comfort.
Wang Ye hesitated, torn, but ultimately decided that walking was safer for Ding Moyan’s sake. Reluctantly, she also signaled “+1.”
Ding Moyan felt momentarily disheartened and heartbroken.
The system mercilessly added salt to the wound, [Accept the truth, Host. You’re a driving disaster.]
Ding Moyan pressed her lips together: Shut up.
Ding Bai seemed to remember something. She paused, turning her head to ask, “What should our team’s name be?”
“Oh, right! What’s the name?” Yu Sisi suddenly recalled this crucial matter. The team’s name was their reputation, if they survived till the end and won the grand prize, this name, along with theirs, would be displayed at the holographic entrance as promotion.
Ding Moyan: “Magical Girl Group.”
