- Chapter 12 - Stomachache
“The two ladies ordered the couple’s set,” the waitress replied politely. “This set is only available for couples. Miss, do you have a partner?”
Ding Moyan couldn’t help but curl her lips and let out a muffled chuckle at the waitress’s words.
Do you have a partner?
Ye Ye had a clear self-awareness no, she was still single.
Those five short words stabbed at her heart, each one chilling.
Yu Sisi laughed unkindly. Ye Ye was indeed single now. If this had been a month ago, she wouldn’t have laughed so easily.
A month ago, Ye Ye had been all lovey-dovey with her Beta girlfriend.
Too bad the breakup had been so abrupt. And now, of all times, Valentine’s Day had arrived. Couldn’t they have at least waited until after the holiday to split?
Ye Ye’s face turned ashen at the painfully sharp remark.
She stood up indignantly, pointing at Ding Moyan and Wang Ye in an accusatory tone. “They’re not a couple either!”
“Why can they order it?”
Faced with Ye Ye’s challenge, the waitress felt displeased but maintained a calm expression. “What are you saying, miss? They are a couple.”
“Impossible!” Ye Ye refused to believe it.
Ding Moyan turned her head and gave her a disdainful glance before slicing a piece of bread and placing it on Wang Ye’s plate. “Here, this is good.”
Ding Moyan winked at her, and Wang Ye instantly understood, playing along.
She took a bite of the bread and shyly murmured, “Mwah!”
The sound was soft, but everyone at the table heard it. Ding Bai was surprised. Though she knew the President and Ding Moyan weren’t a thing, she had heard rumors that Ding Moyan liked Jiang Pei.
Now, she was suddenly switching to this plain, unremarkable roommate of hers?
That was a little odd.
Ding Bai thoughtfully observed the interaction between Ding Moyan and Wang Ye.
The waitress watched the two lovebirds, then turned back to Ye Ye, her expression making her stance clear.
“That’s so obviously fake!” Ye Ye nearly called the waitress blind.
Ding Bai pressed her lips together, turned away, and found another seat, pretending not to know this embarrassing person.
Meanwhile, Yu Sisi silently scanned the menu on her phone, ordered her favorite dishes, and handed it to Ding Bai, signaling her to choose.
Ding Bai shook her head faintly, declining.
Yu Sisi took the phone back and called out to Ye Ye, “Are you ordering or not?”
“Yes! The couple’s set. We’re the couple.” Ye Ye seemed to have found her lifeline. She rushed over, wrapping her arms around Yu Sisi’s and clinging to her sweetly.
“Ugh! Ye Ye, I’m not—”
Before she could finish, Ye Ye covered her mouth with her hand.
The waitress hesitated. “You two seem, a little fake.”
“I said we are, so we are. The couple’s set,” Ye Ye insisted stubbornly.
She had never felt so humiliated before. Normally, anything she wanted, she could get. This was the third time she had been thwarted by the same person. The first two times she had tried to get close to Ding Moyan, she had only been met with rejection.
“Very well.” Whether it was real or not wasn’t her concern. The waitress nodded and went to inform the kitchen.
Wang Ye kept her head down, eating distractedly. She had just said “mwah” to Ding Moyan, and afterward, Ding Moyan had even patted her head affectionately and responded with a soft “Mm.”
For some reason, her heart started pounding inexplicably, and even the food tasted sweeter.
Her mind raced, wondering how to break the awkward silence.
“I’ll have a cola. What about you? Oh, as your partner, I know you love cola too.” Yu Sisi selected her favorite drink on her phone while deliberately annoying Ye Ye to retaliate for the earlier ordering dispute.
Ye Ye gritted her teeth. “I don’t like it. I’m allergic to soda, darling. Have you forgotten?”
“Nonsense, it’s your favorite,” Yu Sisi giggled sweetly, her “hehehe” laughter sending chills down Ye Ye’s spine.
Midway through the meal, Ding Moyan suddenly clutched her stomach in pain. Her brows furrowed tightly, her face turned pale, and cold sweat beaded on her forehead before dripping onto the tablecloth, leaving a damp stain.
The pain resembled menstrual cramps from before her transmigration like knives twisting in her gut, agony enough to make her bang her head against a wall.
Ding Moyan pressed her stomach, trying to alleviate the pain.
Wang Ye was the first to notice something was wrong. “Mo Yan, what’s, what’s the matter?”
Suspecting food poisoning, Ding Moyan replied, “Give me a moment. I need to use the restroom.”
Wang Ye nodded, her eyes filled with concern. “Okay. Message me if there’s any problem.”
With that acknowledgment, Ding Moyan hurried off to the restaurant’s restroom, still clutching her stomach.
At another table, Ding Bai watched her retreating figure, a strange sensation flickering through her mind. Unlike the curiosity she felt toward Ye Ye, her feelings toward Ding Moyan were laced with unprecedented competitiveness and a heightened sense of crisis.
Before, she could easily set traps for Ding Moyan to fall into. Now, she wasn’t so sure.
Ye Ye pulled out a few tissues and stood up. Yu Sisi immediately understood.
The two exchanged glances, their lips curling into identical smirks before splitting up to execute their schemes with perfect coordination.
“Hello, Wang Ye. I’m Yu Sisi, from your class.” Yu Sisi slid the cola she’d ordered across the table. “This is for you.”
Wang Ye looked up, surprise flashing in her eyes before she lowered her head again, continuing to pick at her rice.
Yu Sisi pressed on, “Since you’re my big sister’s partner, it’s only right I treat you.”
“No, no need,” Wang Ye mumbled, gripping her chopsticks tightly.
In her mind, Ding Moyan didn’t get along with these people, so neither should she.
Yu Sisi took Ding Moyan’s seat, shaking the unopened cola can with a laugh. “What? Are you scared to drink it?”
Wang Ye’s eyelashes fluttered. She shook her head, unwilling to engage.
“It’s unopened. Not poisoned,” Yu Sisi teased, undeterred by the repeated rejections. She leaned in, studying Wang Ye’s utterly ordinary face devoid of any charm that might inspire affection.
