- Chapter 65 - Signal
“…Restore?” Lan Xing hesitantly voiced her confusion, “Your Highness… what does she want to restore for me?”
Her tail? Lan Xing dared not look at her own bare, incomplete tail, and she was afraid of others seeing it too. But there was nothing in the tank to conceal it, so she could only curl up slightly, striving to maintain her dignity in front of Sijie Pan.
Of course, none of that was the most important. What mattered most was where Her Highness was now and when she would return to her side.
So, she hurriedly asked Sijie Pan, “How long has Her Highness been gone? When will she be back?”
Through the glass, Sijie Pan sighed and looked at Lan Xing, saying, “Princess, do you know how long you’ve been unconscious?”
Lan Xing blinked her beautiful eyes, her eyelashes still trembling. She remembered the farm explosion, it felt like it had happened just yesterday.
But given the current situation, it couldn’t have been yesterday. She must have been unconscious for a long time… three days? Ten days? Or a month?
Judging by Sijie Pan’s expression, it seemed even longer than a month.
Lan Xing bit her tongue and whispered, “How long was I unconscious?”
“One year and three months.” Sijie Pan gazed at Lan Xing and calmly delivered the news.
Lan Xing felt as if she had been scalded by those words. Her fishtail trembled, rippling the water in the tank and startling the monitors tracking her vital signs.
On the screen, her electrocardiogram fluctuated rapidly, and a red “WARN” alert lit up.
“Your heart rate is too fast,” Sijie Pan pressed her hands against the tank’s glass, watching her anxiously. “Princess, Princess Lan Xing, please don’t be like this. You’ll exhaust your energy too quickly.”
Lan Xing took a breath underwater, releasing a stream of bubbles. She still couldn’t believe it, staring wide-eyed at Sijie Pan. “Over a year?”
“Don’t be afraid. Nothing major happened this past year. Under our careful care, you’ve been recovering well,” Sijie Pan forced a smile. “Please calm down. I’ll go find Dr. Anna Su now…”
“But…” Before Lan Xing could finish her question, Sijie Pan hurried away.
She wanted to get out of the tank, but electrodes and tubes were attached to her body. The slightest movement would trigger an alarm, and the blaring sound was frightening.
Had she really been unconscious for that long?
How had Her Highness spent this past year?
Lan Xing waited anxiously until Sijie Pan returned with others.
Afraid of being seen with her damaged tail, Lan Xing curled into a ball, hugging her lower body with her arms, and crouched in the corner of the tank.
“I’ve already informed Yu Ke that you’ve woken up.” These were the first words Anna Su said upon seeing Lan Xing.
Lan Xing looked over in surprise.
Anna Su was completely different from what she had imagined, she was a cyborg.
Her right eye was a mechanical one, about half the size of a fist, glowing with a green light that was startling at first glance. Her left arm was also mechanical, retracting like a human arm but extending into three dexterous hands.
“You must be startled by my appearance,” Dr. Anna Su smiled, raising her left arm to show Lan Xing while speaking gently. “Don’t be afraid. I’m a surgeon, this kind of modification allows me to perform surgeries more skillfully, even highly intricate brain operations.”
Lan Xing blew a small bubble in the water and whispered, “You’re amazing.”
“Your praise fills my heart with excitement, my dear princess,” Dr. Anna Su bowed, still smiling. “If you wish, I could create a mechanical fishtail for you. Once completed, it would be the most dazzling presence in the sea!”
But how would a mechanical tail function in the ocean? Metal products rust and decay in seawater, and electrodes can’t connect either. Lan Xing didn’t voice her doubts. She pressed her lips together and politely replied, “Thank you, Dr. Anna Su. You mentioned Her Highness earlier, does she know I’ve awakened?”
“I’ve already sent the signal, but she’s currently in the Chaotic Lands, where electromagnetic waves are blocked and the interstellar network can’t connect. So, I suspect she might not have received my message yet,” Dr. Anna Su explained.
“Is the place she went to dangerous?” Lan Xing asked anxiously.
“I wouldn’t say it’s not dangerous, but perhaps she’ll gain something from it?” Dr. Anna Su said. “You might not realize it yet, but your condition is actually quite severe. If Her Highness returns empty-handed this time, then you…”
Dr. Anna Su suddenly stopped speaking, noticing Lan Xing’s concerning state. In just a short while, Lan Xing appeared extremely fatigued. Her eyelids drooped as if she were listening, but when Dr. Anna Su paused for a long moment, she didn’t react. After a while, she forced herself to perk up, offering a polite smile and asking, “What were you saying earlier? About my sister…”
“She will return, perhaps soon, or perhaps after a little more waiting.”
Lan Xing smiled sadly, a breathtaking expression that stirred the heart of the doctor who watched over her daily. After a moment, Lan Xing murmured, “I think I’m a bit tired…”
Dr. Anna Su gazed at her with pity, her smile long gone. Within three seconds under her watchful eye, Lan Xing fell asleep.
Sijie Pan, observing from nearby, shook her head and sighed. “Just as you predicted.”
“At least she woke up, and we can give Her Highness an account,” Dr. Anna Su said. “Everything will get better.”
“I’m worried whether the princess can return. The place she went is far too dangerous, no one knows what might happen there,” Sijie Pan took out her phone, unlocked the screen, and logged into a social platform. She pulled up a photo of Yu Ke, who was resting her chin in one hand while holding a handheld console in the other. After admiring the picture for a long time, she turned back to Dr. Anna Su and asked, “If she returns, do you think there’s any chance she might like me?”
Dr. Anna Su paid little mind, checking data and recording symptoms as she leisurely replied, “The probability of that happening is only 0.001%. The only scenario would be if the princess mistook you for Princess Lan Xing.”
Sijie Pan chuckled, glancing at the beautiful mermaid princess in the water. “I could clone myself to become her. When the princess returns, you can tell her that I am Princess Lan Xing.”
Dr. Anna Su put down her pen and turned to give Sijie Pan a serious look. “Are you serious about this?”
“I do have such thoughts,” Sijie Pan replied with an innocent smile, “but Lan Xing looks so pitiful that I can’t bear to do it. However, if she doesn’t get better, we can’t let the princess keep suffering like this…”
Dr. Anna Su thought for a moment but said nothing more, lowering her head to continue recording the medical condition.
…
When Lan Xing woke again, she immediately asked Sijie Pan, “How long was I asleep this time?”
“Three days. You woke up quite quickly this time, didn’t keep us waiting long.” Sijie Pan looked genuinely excited.
“What about Her Highness? Any news from her?”
“Yes,” Sijie Pan took out his phone and showed Lan Xing the screen. “This is her coordinates. They flickered once yesterday, she should be returning soon!”
