- Chapter 66 - Betrayal
The Eagle Galaxy is vast and boundless, its width tens of thousands of times that of the Solar System. While it boasts numerous stars, the number of planets suitable for sustaining civilizations is relatively limited. Among these limited civilizations, hostility and competition are frequent occurrences. Over the past two hundred years alone, seven galaxy-wide wars have erupted, each bringing catastrophic devastation to the civilizations within the galaxy. The ultimate victors of these interstellar conflicts gained little more than cosmic ruins and dust in the aftermath.
The space station where Lan Xing resided was a small laboratory built upon such interstellar ruins, belonging to the Blackwater Republic, the third-largest republic in the Eagle Galaxy.
The place Yu Ke was headed to was the Chaos Center of the Eagle Galaxy, the central battlefield of the Seventh Interstellar War. It was originally a massive, beautiful green planet and had once served as the headquarters of the largest coalition in the Eagle Galaxy. Yet, even such a planet could not escape the ravages of war, ultimately destroyed by hyper-nuclear bombs, leaving it a chaotic wasteland and a forbidden zone within the galaxy.
According to reports from various exploration teams in the Eagle Galaxy, no spacecraft has ever successfully traversed the Chaos Center. Most vessels lose their way within it, and only a handful manage to venture deep into the chaos. However, that region is saturated with nuclear radiation, rendering further exploration pointless.
There are also rumors that the Chaos is, in fact, a wormhole, a passage connecting different dimensions. Yet, this theory remains unverified, as no exploration team has ever passed through the Chaos to another dimension and returned with evidence.
Despite this, the wormhole theory continues to attract various interstellar expedition teams eager to explore its mysteries.
The team Yu Ke joined was called “Tattered,” consisting of 23 members from over a dozen different planets. Among them was a key member named D.J. Lun, who, like Lan Xing, hailed from the planet Panda.
D.J. Lun was a fish-man with the head of a crocodile on his upper body and short, thick, hairy human legs. By the time Yu Ke first met him, she had already grown accustomed to such bizarre creatures.
After leaving the Princess spacecraft, Yu Ke traveled to many nations and encountered various alien life forms. Yet, by her aesthetic standards, she found it difficult to appreciate these extraterrestrial beings. Many were so grotesque they defied description, but D.J. Lun was at least tolerable to look at.
From this perspective, Lan Xing was undoubtedly the most beautiful and adorable existence, whether on Panda or across the entire interstellar universe.
Among the Tattered team were several silicon-based life forms. They had no discernible gender, were exceedingly ugly, and lacked evolved organs like mouths or eyes for communication. Instead, they transmitted information directly through neural pathways.
If not for what had happened to Lan Xing, Yu Ke could never have imagined herself sharing a spacecraft with such repulsive alien beings, becoming their teammate, and journeying through the endless cosmos.
She missed Lan Xing every moment, longing for the days they had spent together aboard the Princess spacecraft. She yearned for the feeling of holding Xing’er in her arms, kissing her gently, and the way Xing’er’s starry eyes would gaze at her, softly calling her “sister.” Yu Ke also missed their crewmates, and she wished endlessly to return to that ship.
Lan Xing remained in a coma, and Yu Ke had no other options. She traveled with the unconscious Lan Xing through the Lingjiu System, visiting many countries, but the star physicians all gave the same diagnosis after examining her:
“Her organs are gradually failing. She can only wait for death unless a way is found to replace her organs.”
“I’ve seen too many clones like this. Although cloned mermaids are rare, the situation is generally similar.”
“While the exact cause isn’t clear, from existing cases, most clones don’t live to their natural lifespan. This seems to be the fate of clones, you should have been aware of this from the start.”
“Actually, there might be a solution. The neighboring Blackwater Republic has mature organ transplantation technology, but the key issue lies in the organ donor. She’s a mermaid, and mermaids are scarce in the galaxy, not to mention the matching problem.”
Finally, Yu Ke went to the Blackwater Republic and found their chief physician, Anna Su. After understanding the situation, Anna Su readily agreed to help.
“If even I can’t help, there’s almost nowhere else in the Lingjiu System you can turn to,” Anna Su said, lightly scratching her forehead with her mechanical arm fingers. Her tone was matter-of-fact yet reassuring, carrying an air of effortless competence. “Just leave her to me. It’s better than dragging her around the galaxy as you are now.”
Yu Ke stayed in Anna Su’s laboratory for a few days until Lan Xing’s vital signs stabilized and her readings stopped declining, which gave her some peace of mind.
Anna Su’s laboratory was equipped with advanced instruments that continuously provided Lan Xing with nutritional support and monitored her vital signs in real-time. At least here, Yu Ke didn’t have to worry about Lan Xing dying from weakness for the time being.
Moreover, someone was always by Lan Xing’s side, taking meticulous care of her.
This was the best news Yu Ke had received in nearly a month.
A month ago, the Princess spacecraft had an accident while passing through Lanis-19 Base. Their group was blasted out of the base warehouse. Zhang Jun sustained minor injuries, and Remus managed to escape during the explosion. Not only that, he even uploaded the data from before the base massacre at the last moment, preserving crucial evidence. His actions successfully impressed Zhang Jun, and their relationship progressed rapidly. They got engaged not long ago.
However, Lan Xing’s injuries were not as optimistic. Initially, everyone thought she had only injured her tail and would recover after a few days of rest. But in the following days, not only did Lan Xing not wake up, she grew weaker each day, showing signs of rapid decline.
Yu Ke took her everywhere seeking medical help, which eventually led them to Anna Su’s laboratory.
During this time, Zhang Jun and Raymond weren’t idle either. They continued piloting the Princess spacecraft, conducting covert investigations into the incident at Lanis-19 Base. Through their persistent efforts, they indeed uncovered the mastermind behind the perpetrators who had committed the violence at the base, the Persian Empire.
The Lanis Base belonged to the Lanis Empire. After the base exploded, all evidence pointed to the All-Free organization as the culprit. Seizing this opportunity, the Persian Empire continued to expand its allied forces, planning a massive purge against All-Free!
Zhang Jun had always believed in All-Free’s innocence, and Remus managed to obtain crucial evidence for him. Just one day before the Persian Empire convened the allied forces’ assembly, the Persian Empire was sued in the Interstellar Court.
Zhang Jun’s move directly embarrassed the Persian Empire and earned him support from various anti-imperialist republics, including the Blackwater Republic.
After he left Datianxi, Zhang Jun’s father, the Prime Minister, and his family had been constantly worried about his safety, even sending him multiple emails hoping he would return to Datianxi to inherit the family business. Zhang Jun’s speech accusing the Persian Empire in the Interstellar Court not only allowed him to hold his head high but also reassured his family.
With the support of the Blackwater Republic, Yu Ke and Lan Xing were able to access more medical resources through Anna Su.
However, this didn’t mean Lan Xing could be completely cured.
“I can only guarantee she won’t die. If you want to fully heal her, the only way is to have the real Princess Lan Xing come and provide some materials.”
“What do you mean by ‘some materials’?” Yu Ke said. “Didn’t you say she needs a full organ transplant to be saved? If I find that Lan Xing, how can I persuade her to give her organs to Xing’er?”
Anna Su replied, “That’s up to you to decide. If you don’t want to save her, you can give up. By the time you find the other Princess Lan Xing, you might have already forgotten about the one here.”
“I won’t. Xing’er is unique in this world…”
“She’s a clone. How can she be called unique?”
“To me, she is unique. I won’t argue with you about this. No matter what, I must find a way to save Xing’er, but I don’t want to kill that Lan Xing for her. Is there any other way?”
“No. Either that, or watch her die from organ failure.”
Yu Ke’s heart sank into an abyss.
That night, she locked herself in the space station’s sealed cabin and thought all night long. The next day, she bid farewell to Lan Xing and boarded someone else’s spacecraft.
Finding someone who had changed their name and gone into hiding in the vast universe was more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack.
Yu Ke first thought of Lan Zhen, but after several attempts to contact her, Lan Zhen never replied. With no other choice, Yu Ke had to give up on getting information from Lan Zhen.
She changed her identity and went to Lan Xing’s hometown, Panda Planet, hoping to gather information from Lan Xing’s other relatives and friends.
When she arrived at Panda Planet, Yu Ke’s heart was filled with an indescribable melancholy. She had finally reached the place where Lan Xing grew up, but not with Lan Xing by her side. There was no more painful feeling than this.
From space, Panda Planet appeared as a beautiful sapphire, its surface covered in blue seawater, shimmering brilliantly in the dark universe.
It was from here that her Xing’er had boarded the spacecraft to the Ferrari Kingdom, and from that moment on, the wheels of fate kept turning, bringing Yu Ke to this very place as well.
Yu Ke met with the King of Panda Planet, King Peter, the father of Lan Xing and Lan Zhen, along with King Peter’s numerous children.
It must be said that Peter truly had a vast number of offspring. Some were strikingly beautiful, while others, mixed with genes from various aquatic races, had bizarre and peculiar appearances. From this, one could tell that King Peter was not picky, he would pursue any aquatic creature, regardless of kind.
An Oyster Prince, carrying his shell, occasionally showed off his beautiful pearls to Yu Ke, blowing bubbles as he said, “See? My pearl babies are the most beautiful in the world. Of course, if you’re willing, they could be your babies too.”
Yu Ke had no interest in such things. She told the prince, “I’m only here to find out what happened to Princess Lan Xing. I have no interest in your pearls.”
“But my pearls are the most beautiful pearls in the world!” the Oyster Prince retorted, displeased. Pointing at his siblings, he insisted, “Ask them! They all know I have the most beautiful pearls!”
Aside from the Oyster Prince, the other aquatic beings each had their own quirks. Finally, Yu Ke encountered a green-tailed mermaid princess who was acquainted with Lan Xing. Curling her green tail, the mermaid said, “I know Lan Xing! Didn’t she marry a prince from a distant land?”
Yu Ke was somewhat surprised. Sitting inside her underwater capsule, she spoke to the green-tailed mermaid through the glass, “Is that all you know?”
“What else is there?” The green-tailed mermaid scratched her head, her eyes clear and confused.
“She ran away from the marriage. Now… her whereabouts are unknown,” Yu Ke enunciated each word clearly.
“Huh?”
“What?”
“Ran away?! Someone ran away from their wedding?”
Hearing the gossip, the aquatic beings quickly gathered around, chattering all at once: “Who ran away?”
“Why?”
Not wanting to waste words with them, Yu Ke said, “I need to see your king.”
When she finally met King Peter, he responded half-dazed and half-jokingly, “Which daughter are you asking about again?”
“Lan Xing. She was sent to the Kingdom of Ferrari for a political marriage two years ago,” Yu Ke replied calmly and firmly from inside her underwater glass capsule.
“Ah, yes, I think there was such an incident…” King Peter struggled to recall. “If she really did run away, then after all this time, she must already be dead.”
Yu Ke felt as if she had been struck hard. She stood up, her face pale, and exclaimed, “What did you say?!”
King Peter’s glossy hair floated in the sea, his smile faint and mysterious. Gripping his scepter, he spoke composedly, “That is Panda Kingdom’s punishment for traitors. If what you say is true, she has likely already faced her punishment.”
Yu Ke was thunderstruck. Pressing her body against the glass wall of the capsule, she glared fiercely at the king on his throne, veins bulging on her forehead as she angrily shouted, “What nonsense are you talking? What kind of punishment is so cruel? Lan Xing is your daughter! She is the most beautiful mermaid on the planet! She is the pride of your Panda Planet!”
“But she betrayed the kingdom. Traitors, no matter how far they flee, cannot escape death.”
Yu Ke was momentarily stunned, unsure whether the “traitor” referred to her beloved Xing’er or the true princess who had actually fled the marriage and disappeared.
Perhaps… they only meant Xing’er, who had eloped with her, because Xing’er was a clone, which was why they could bring themselves to inflict such cruel punishment on her.
Yu Ke was momentarily at a loss for words. Lan Zhen had warned her and Xing’er back then, but they hadn’t taken it seriously. Or rather, Xing’er hadn’t cared about the punishment. Compared to fulfilling her mission as a substitute, she would rather run far away with Yu Ke and live a truly happy life.
Even if that happiness was as fleeting as a night-blooming flower’s bloom, it was still better than marrying someone she didn’t love, repeating the daily ritual of dyeing her tail, and living trapped in the palace, constantly on edge while pretending to be someone else, until the day the lie inevitably unraveled.
Yu Ke slowly drew a breath, forcing herself to calm down and face the situation.
She knew very well that at this point, neither she nor Xing’er was at fault. The ones to blame were those who had made the rules.
And she was determined to break those rules for Xing’er’s sake.
