- Chapter 64 - Separation
“Xing’er, Xing’er! Lan Xing! Xing’er, where are you?!”
…Is that my sister’s voice?
Where am I?
What happened?
Right, there was an explosion!
Remus hasn’t come out yet!
Lan Xing jolted awake to find herself adrift in the vast expanse of space, moving toward an unknown direction. The emergency pod she had been in was now shattered into several fragments, floating aimlessly in the void.
Intermittent sounds crackled through her headset, Yu Ke was calling for her!
Gasping for air, Lan Xing responded, “Sister? Sister, I’m okay!”
Even so… Lan Xing could clearly see that the Lanis Base was now far in the distance, reduced to a tiny speck, and the Princess was nowhere to be seen!
If she couldn’t return to the Princess soon, the oxygen in her spacesuit would run out, and she would suffocate to death, never again seeing the ones she loved.
“Sister, can you hear me?” Lan Xing’s voice trembled with fear.
The signal grew weaker and weaker. Lan Xing didn’t know if Yu Ke had heard her response. All she could hear now was the static, “zzzt, zzzt,” filling her with despair.
“Sister…”
“I want to see you…”
Tears welled up in her eyes. Lan Xing lowered her head and suddenly caught a glimpse of a shimmering light.
A figure in a silver spacesuit was swiftly swimming toward her. Behind her, the white exhaust from her thrusters formed a thin, wavy line, like a flying fish skimming through the deep sea or a meteor streaking across the sky.
Lan Xing’s gaze followed the shimmering light as it drew nearer until she could clearly make out the face of the approaching figure.
Yu Ke’s voice came through the communication device, sounding incredibly gentle and slightly breathless. She said, “Xing’er, I see you.”
Lan Xing’s eyes lit up, just as they had in the depths of the ocean. Instinctively, she flicked her tail, stretched her body in the vacuum of space, and swam toward the person she loved.
She couldn’t suppress the surge of joy and sorrow within her. Like migratory birds returning north or silkworms spinning their cocoons, it was all driven by instinct.
She might have forgotten that transforming into a mermaid in space could rupture her spacesuit and lead to suffocation, but the moment she heard Yu Ke’s voice, none of that mattered.
She propelled herself with her tail, rushing toward Yu Ke. Yu Ke opened her arms and embraced her tightly. The impact sent them spinning far into the distance, but they held each other close, unconcerned about where they were drifting.
Even if they were drifting aimlessly, as long as they were together, they felt at peace.
Being with the one you love, no matter what you go through, always brings happiness.
The two drifted through space for a while, their speed gradually slowing, and the dizzying spins came to a halt.
Countless fragments whizzed past them at relative speeds so high that each piece could pierce through their chests like bullets.
This was the true nature of space, the inevitable hardships and challenges of their journey.
In comparison, their experiences over the past six months had been almost utopian, with few major setbacks.
The recent explosion could have annihilated everyone on their ship. Though they had found Lan Xing, survival was still far from certain.
Yu Ke held Lan Xing tightly, her breath catching in her throat.
Her body tensed, and she parted her lips, unsure of what to say.
In the face of crisis, words felt utterly inadequate.
Through the space helmet, Yu Ke pressed close to Lan Xing’s face, studying her expression, and was surprised to find that she was still smiling.
Yes, Lan Xing would always be the optimistic, resilient Lan Xing, far stronger than Yu Ke had ever imagined.
Yu Ke had spent too long searching for Lan Xing. Her oxygen was running low, and so was her fuel. Just as she thought they were cornered, Lan Xing began to sway her magnificent, enormous tail. With each movement, the scales detached and drifted into space like blue snowflakes falling into the dark night, forming a trail as brilliant as fireworks.
In the vacuum of space, where there is no air resistance, propulsion requires ejecting something in the opposite direction to gain speed through the conservation of momentum.
Lan Xing chose to sacrifice her beautiful tail.
She needed to send Xie Ning back to the Princess ship and find Zhang Jun, Remus, and the others.
She prayed to the deep sea for more strength, enough to accomplish all this and ensure the safety of the Princess ship’s crew.
With this thought, Lan Xing accelerated, weaving through the vast debris field in search of the other crew members.
…
When she regained consciousness, Lan Xing found herself back aboard the Princess ship, lying inside a large glass tank. Electrodes were attached to her body, and nearby, a computer monitored her vital signs.
Lan Xing blinked in the water, and the electrical signal transmitted outward. The connected instrument immediately emitted a “beep,” followed by the computer screen lighting up. The lights in the room flickered on one after another, so bright that she could barely keep her eyes open.
Feeling nervous, she raised her hand to shield her eyes, peering through the gaps between her fingers to observe her surroundings. But when her gaze shifted closer and she saw her own body clearly, she shuddered in shock. Her tail jerked violently, dislodging the attached electrodes and sending out a high-intensity electrical signal. The instruments outside began to buzz loudly, as if some great disaster were about to strike!
Lan Xing was terrified. Her face turned pale as she stared at the lower half of her body, her expression pained.
Finally, Lan Xing remembered what had happened.
She had been thrown out by an explosion while searching for survivors at Lanis 19 Base, along with Zhang Jun and Remus!
After drifting in space for some time, just when she thought she was going to die, the Princess came to her rescue!
Lan Xing had been adrift in space for too long, and the Princess had exhausted her portable oxygen and fuel to find her. To return to the Princess ship, Lan Xing came up with an idea: using the skill she had learned in the deep sea, she detached her tail to create reverse thrust, propelling herself and the Princess toward the vicinity of the Princess ship!
As a result, Lan Xing’s tail was now only half its original length. The once magnificent tail fin had become bare, its shimmering scales all shed in space. Now, she had become the ugliest, baldest mermaid in the world!
And she was trapped in a glass tank, unable to leave like a pitiful pet! It was unbearable!
Lan Xing hated glass tanks the most. They reminded her of unpleasant memories from the past, of the clones she had seen in Isabelle’s laboratory, preserved in culture fluid!
She had undergone similar experiments herself. Before being sent to the Kingdom of Ferrari, a special monitoring device had been implanted in her body to prevent her from escaping or betraying them.
In her moment of greatest fear, her mind instinctively turned to Yu Ke, her dear Princess! If she were here, Lan Xing wouldn’t feel so miserable!
No! That wasn’t it either! Lan Xing looked at her scarred tail, tears streaming from the corners of her eyes and dissolving into the cold freshwater.
She didn’t want the Princess to see her like this!
Who could accept a mermaid without a complete tail? Lan Xing had even lost the ability to transform into a human! Her tail was no longer intact, making it impossible for her to change into human legs. This meant she would never be able to walk on land again!
The alarm in the room attracted someone. Lan Xing, terrified, wanted to hide, but there was nowhere to go. She curled her body into a small ball, bent over to hug her tail, and warily watched the direction of the approaching footsteps.
The first to rush in was a young girl in a blue nurse’s uniform. Initially flustered, her expression turned to delight upon seeing Lan Xing. She hurriedly checked the life-sign data on the computer monitor.
Lan Xing initially wanted to speak with her, but she feared the other party might not take her seriously. She didn’t know who this person was, and she was acutely aware that in some people’s eyes, mermaids were merely pets to be kept in tanks, not beings one could converse with.
Soon, however, she realized her worries were unnecessary. The female nurse approached with a concerned expression, her voice gentle as she asked, “Your Highness, how are you feeling?”
It seemed she knew who I was. Lan Xing felt a slight easing of her anxiety. Softly and politely, she inquired, “May I ask… where are we? And who are you?”
“This is a space station in the Lingjiu System. My name is Sijie Pan, and I am a medical worker from the Blackwater Republic, assigned to care for you. As soon as you regained consciousness, I was required to report immediately to my superior, Dr. Anna Su, the most talented physician in the Republic. At the moment, they are in a meeting at the council hall. Once the meeting concludes, I will inform Dr. Anna Su of your awakening. She will be overjoyed to hear the news.”
Hearing this, Lan Xing grew a little bolder. Pressing her hands against the glass wall of the tank, her deep blue eyes wide open, she took a soft breath and mustered the courage to ask the question she most urgently needed an answer to: “Dear Sijie Pan, I wish to know, where is Her Highness Yu Ke of the Ferrari Kingdom right now?”
As she spoke Yu Ke’s name, Lan Xing’s voice trembled slightly with emotion.
She didn’t want to appear weak, but waking up without seeing Her Highness Yu Ke had left her feeling deeply disheartened.
“Please don’t worry,” Sijie Pan replied, gazing at her with sympathetic concern. “Your dear Princess Yu Ke is currently in the Lingjiu System. However, she has ventured into the most turbulent nebula in search of a way to help you recover. She entrusted you to our care, placing absolute trust in our space station. Please rest assured and focus on recuperating while awaiting the Princess’s triumphant return.”
