- Chapter 63 - Sacrifice
Remus supported the injured man’s upper body while pulling the spacesuit over him. “Help me,” he said.
Lan Xing immediately stepped forward to assist. While Yu Ke and Remus lifted the injured man, she carefully dressed him in the spacesuit, guiding his arms through the sleeves, zipping it up, and fastening the clasps without any regard for status differences.
Their current spacesuits were designed to be extremely lightweight, no bulkier than ordinary down jackets, yet without this protection, exposure to space would kill them in under a minute.
After the suit was secured, Yu Ke prepared to leave with the injured man. “I’ll be back soon, fifteen minutes at most. Notify me immediately if anything happens during that time.”
Remus replied casually, “Got it. We trust you, Captain!”
“Keep an eye on the Princess and Zhang Jun. Don’t let them leave your sight.”
“I know,” Remus said with a laugh. “I trust you, so you should trust me too. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have taken off my spacesuit. Go on, I can handle things here!”
After Yu Ke departed, Remus asked Zhang Jun in a congenial tone, “Did you find what you were looking for?”
Zhang Jun was still angry but remained composed. After two minutes, he replied, “Yes.”
Remus and Lan Xing moved closer to look. Zhang Jun frowned and said, “There’s an address here that should store data from the base’s security cameras. Let me try to access it…”
Remus leaned in behind Zhang Jun, encircling him with his arms. Lan Xing sensed something amiss and discreetly made space for them.
Zhang Jun glanced back at Lan Xing with a helpless smile. “It’s not like that…”
Remus paid no mind, saying, “Focus on the data first. Why are all these files corrupted?”
Zhang Jun frowned. “Can they be repaired?”
“With me here, definitely, it’ll just take a few minutes,” Remus boasted slightly. “Having the Captain take him back to the ship was a smart move. This way, I can maximize my usefulness.”
As the two busied themselves with the data, Lan Xing noticed something unusual.
“Do you… hear that sound?” she asked, appearing tense.
Zhang Jun, deep in concentration, snapped back to attention. “What?”
“Beep… beep… beep…”
The rhythmic sound resembled a countdown device, filling Lan Xing with intense dread.
Her face turned pale as she stepped backward. Zhang Jun and Remus remained puzzled. “What’s wrong?” Zhang Jun asked with concern. “What sound are you hearing?”
“I can hear it clearly,” Lan Xing breathed rapidly, turning around and then following the direction of the sound. She lifted a black cloth covering the vegetation and was stunned by what she saw.
Hidden beneath the plants were neatly wrapped packages with a timer attached.
“Beep… beep… beep…”
On the display, red numbers showed: “02:59:22”
The numbers changed every second, indicating less than three minutes remaining.
The moment she realized what it was, Lan Xing nearly screamed, “There’s a bomb here!”
Zhang Jun and Remus rushed over to look, and both gasped sharply. One felt his vision darken, despairingly covering his forehead, while the other cursed in anger, kicking something nearby. For a moment, none of the three could come up with a plan.
“The data will be restored soon,” Remus swore. “Fuck off! How could something so damn annoying happen!”
“No, no, this has nothing to do with the data,” Zhang Jun said, his blood running cold as he grabbed Remus by the collar urgently. “Remus! We have to get out of here, or we’ll all die! Especially you, if this place blows, you’ll be thrown into space. You won’t last a minute!”
“Thanks for that blessed mouth of yours,” Remus rubbed his head. “Damn it, how long until the captain gets back?”
“She just left; it’ll take at least ten minutes?!” Zhang Jun’s words sped up with tension. “By the time she gets here, this place will have already blown up! Remus, what do we do now? I… I don’t know how to defuse this kind of bomb, and we haven’t even finished restoring the data!”
“I’ll handle the data. Listen to me, you and the princess need to leave this place right now. Now! Immediately, get out of here!” Remus nearly roared.
“No!” Zhang Jun’s eyes widened in disbelief. “There’s no way we’re leaving you here!”
Smack! Remus slapped Zhang Jun across the face. When angry, he resembled a lean wolf, gritting his teeth as he cursed, “You can’t defuse bombs, you can’t restore data, what use are you? What good will staying here do? If you want to uncover the truth, get the hell out of here right now! I’ve sent the captain our location; she’ll come get you soon. Hurry up and go! Protect the princess!”
Both Lan Xing and Zhang Jun were stunned. The countdown showed “01:47:22” they had already wasted a full minute just making a decision. They couldn’t afford to delay any longer!
Seeing them still hesitating, Remus shoved the two outside, locking them out of the base, then raced against time to restore the data.
Outside Base 13, Zhang Jun pounded on the door, shouting Remus’s name, but his voice couldn’t penetrate. Soon, he heard Remus’s calm voice come through the spacesuit communicator.
“Get going. This place is about to blow. The entire Lanis Base will be reduced to ashes. No matter who’s behind this, we can’t let the culprit succeed. If we all die here, no one will ever know what happened. Zhang Jun, don’t you want to know the truth? Aren’t you trying to clear All-Free’s name? This is the best way to do it.”
Lan Xing pulled at Zhang Jun; she had also received a communication from Yu Ke and immediately reported their current situation to her.
“The escape pod has been launched,” Yu Ke said. “Forget the data! Grab Remus, all three of you get in the pod now!”
With less than a minute left, Zhang Jun shouted at Remus, “Did you hear that? The captain said to abandon the data! Open the door and come out right now!”
“I’m almost done,” Remus replied. “Just a few more seconds!”
At 21 seconds on the countdown, the escape pod landed with a thud just five meters away from them, perfectly positioned.
With 15 seconds remaining, Zhang Jun was still waiting outside Remus’s door when Yu Ke urged, “Board the pod first! If we’re too close to the blast, the pod could get damaged!”
Zhang Jun glanced at Lan Xing and decided to take her to the pod first. Using jet propulsion, they accelerated toward the pod, pulled open the hatch, and climbed inside.
“10, 9, 8… 5, 4…”
Yu Ke’s voice came through the communicator, “Is Remus still not out?”
Zhang Jun stayed silent. Lan Xing murmured a quiet “Mm.”
“Never mind. Say your goodbyes. There’s no time left,” Yu Ke said.
A massive explosion erupted with a deafening boom, unleashing crimson flames that pierced through the base before being instantly swallowed by the vacuum of space. Oxygen vanished in an instant. The powerful shockwave sent their escape pod hurtling away as countless debris spun wildly through the void. The world turned upside down, as if a furious deity were raging, determined to crush and devour everything in its path.
