- Chapter 62 - Explosion
“It’s clear this place has been attacked,” Zhang Jun said before immediately picking up the communication device to contact the nearest planet.
“Don’t rush to contact the ground just yet,” Yu Ke interjected, turning to the group with a vigilant expression. “Have we been recording since docking?”
Zhang Jun froze, realizing he hadn’t considered recording at all. Yu Ke’s reminder made him aware of the potential problems they might face.
Lanis 19 Base had been attacked, and they were likely key witnesses. Without crucial evidence, they could end up entangled in interstellar legal disputes.
In the past, Zhang Jun would never have considered such a scenario, but after experiencing imprisonment, he had matured significantly and began contemplating these complex issues.
He halted his actions, started recording, and simultaneously drew his pistol, cautiously scanning every blind spot, wary of anything suddenly emerging.
“We forgot to record when we left the spacecraft, so we’ll have to start now,” Remus said. “But I don’t think it should be that serious-”
“I’ve been recording!” Lan Xing spoke up earnestly. “The camera on my spacesuit has been on the whole time. We can review the footage once we’re back. Don’t worry. Right now, the most important thing is to figure out what happened here and see if there are any survivors!”
Zhang Jun nodded in agreement. “We need to split up to cover more ground efficiently.”
Yu Ke added, “Agreed. We’ll divide into two groups, but no one goes alone. From this door, you and Remus check counterclockwise, while Lan Xing and I take the other side. We’ll meet at the opposite end. If you find anything important, contact us immediately.”
The four of them sprang into action. Remus showed no signs of fear, leading the way for Zhang Jun and reminding him to stay alert.
The farms near the entrance were the most severely damaged. Vegetation had been burned to ashes, and the isolation layer was breached, with a gaping hole leading directly into space. The immense pressure difference whipped up winds and dust, sending them flying out into the void.
Yu Ke held Lan Xing’s hand, carefully keeping their distance from the breaches to avoid being swept away by the airflow.
Several farms were in similar states of devastation. Workers’ bodies, pierced by bullets, floated in the air. Some weren’t wearing spacesuits, their corpses freeze-dried, preserved in their final working postures.
Yu Ke didn’t want Lan Xing to see such scenes, but Lan Xing remained calmer than expected. She took out her phone to photograph and document everything, like a serious and professional journalist. Yu Ke had no choice but to focus her attention elsewhere, keeping a close watch on Lan Xing and their surroundings to prevent any unexpected dangers.
“I feel deeply saddened,” Lan Xing said softly after finishing her documentation. “I want to know what really happened here and seek justice for these people who lost their lives.”
Yu Ke let out a gentle sigh of relief. “I was worried these scenes would frighten you.”
“You should have more faith in me,” Lan Xing pressed her lips together. “Though I’m shocked, I know what needs to be done right now.”
Remus’ voice came through the communicator: “Captain, we’ve found a survivor! He’s been shot and needs medical attention ASAP!”
Yu Ke responded, “Where are you? We’re on our way.”
“Base 13,” Remus urged, “we need to find a way to get him back to the ship. I can’t do it alone, I need you here as soon as possible.”
Yu Ke reacted swiftly. Taking Lan Xing with her, she headed straight for Base 13. Five minutes later, she pushed open the base door and reunited with Remus and Zhang Jun.
The base hadn’t suffered severe damage. The vegetation remained intact, and the isolation layer was unbreached. Remus had even removed his spacesuit helmet, breathing in the base’s air.
The survivor was a robust middle-aged man with a gunshot wound to his waist, blood pooling around him. Remus was applying pressure to stop the bleeding. Seeing Yu Ke and Lan Xing arrive, he sighed in relief. “You’re here.”
Yu Ke scanned the surroundings and asked first, “Where’s Zhang Jun?”
“Over there,” Remus pointed in a direction. “He’s checking the surveillance data. The computers over there seem undamaged.”
Yu Ke nodded and turned her attention to the survivor. “Has he passed out?”
“Yeah,” Remus replied. “But he’s lost too much blood and needs a transfusion. The facilities here are wrecked. We have to figure out how to move him to the Princess ship.”
“I can carry him back to the ship,” Yu Ke said, “but not in this condition. Let me ask Sang Jiu if she can launch an emergency pod to our location.”
The signal connected, and Sang Jiu sounded anxious. “Where’s the emergency pod? How do I launch it?”
“The emergency pod is stored with the other flight pods in the garage next to the exit. Go to the cockpit, pull the emergency lever first, then use the auto-targeting system to lock onto our position. Set a small margin of error and launch the pod…” Yu Ke patiently guided her, but Sang Jiu remained silent for a long while.
After a moment, she swallowed hard and said, “Which one is the emergency lever? I pulled one, and now it’s warning me that I’ve gone off course…”
Yu Ke sighed. “You didn’t switch to manual control, did you?”
Sang Jiu burst into tears. “I’m sorry, Princess! I don’t know how to do any of this!”
Yu Ke felt helpless. Lan Xing patted her hand reassuringly. Remus interjected, “This plan won’t work. I’ll put my spacesuit on him first. Captain, you take him back to the ship!”
As he spoke, Remus began removing his spacesuit.
Zhang Jun popped up from the back, shouting, “Remus?”
Remus snapped, “What now?”
Zhang Jun retorted irritably, “If you give him your suit, what are you going to do if something happens?”
Remus growled in frustration, “What else can we do? This man is about to die! If he dies, you’ll never learn the truth he was trying to tell!”
“Whatever he said isn’t the truth, he was lying!” Zhang Jun shot back angrily. “I want to know why he’s slandering All-Free too! I’ll give him my spacesuit. You take him to the ship!”
Yu Ke had heard enough. She cut them off. “Did he say anything while he was still conscious?”
Zhang Jun’s face darkened. Remus answered, “He claimed All-Free was behind all this, but Zhang Jun refuses to believe it. He’s obsessed with finding evidence.”
Zhang Jun declared loudly, “If it truly was All-Free’s doing, I will never forgive them! But I’ve always known exactly what kind of people the All-Free members are, I refuse to believe they’d commit such a heinous act. I must find evidence to prove whether they’re truly responsible. If it’s a false accusation, I’ll uncover the proof to clear their names!”
“Stop arguing,” Yu Ke said calmly. “Saving lives comes first. Remus, help him change into the spacesuit. I’ll take the injured back to the ship. Sang Jiu has switched to manual controls, she’s panicking right now too.”
Lan Xing asked, “What can I do?”
