- Chapter 61 - The Base
“Landsick?” Yu Ke couldn’t comprehend the term she had just heard. “What kind of illness is that?”
“It’s similar to lovesickness, it makes you emotionally low, despondent, and dispirited, just like Zhang Jun is now,” Lan Xing explained to Yu Ke. “Generally, people who leave Earth for the first time to travel into space are more prone to landsickness.”
“Hmm,” Yu Ke pressed the stylus to her forehead, thinking for a moment. “What can we do to alleviate their symptoms? Do we have any corresponding medication?”
“It’s not a physiological illness. While medication can calm and soothe their emotions, it doesn’t address the root cause,” Lan Xing said. “The problem is they’ve been away from solid ground for too long. Prolonged floating in space makes them feel mentally unsettled, leading to a series of emotional issues that affect their health. Medication can’t solve that.”
Yu Ke nodded. “I understand. That must be why Zhang Jun mentioned wanting to go to that planetoid last time, he wanted to set foot on solid ground. Let me check if there are any safe docking spots nearby.”
“Mm-hmm!” Lan Xing nodded earnestly. “If we can dock at a base or rest on a planet, I think we’d all feel much more relaxed.”
Yu Ke studied the map for a while and soon reached a conclusion: “We can rest at Lanis Base 19. It’s about four hours away.”
“That’s great,” Lan Xing smiled, her lips curving upward. “I’ll go inform them in a little while!”
“Thank you for your hard work,” Yu Ke stood up and walked over to Lan Xing, kissing her forehead. “Xing’er, you’re really thoughtful.”
Lan Xing lifted her face and smiled slyly, like a fox. She was a sensitive and fragile Omega, but during their journey, Yu Ke could sense the powerful and infectious spiritual strength within her.
Back when Lan Zhen was here, he had spoken about the formidable spiritual power of their mermaid clan. At the time, Yu Ke hadn’t fully understood, but now she was gradually beginning to grasp it.
If nothing else, just being with Lan Xing made Yu Ke feel secure and at ease.
Holding Lan Xing by the waist, she gazed at her tenderly and asked, “When you left Panda Planet, did you experience landsickness like they do?”
Yu Ke couldn’t relate to such feelings. In her original memories, she had frequently traveled to various planets with Queen Jiao and had long grown accustomed to extended space voyages.
But Lan Xing was different. Before coming to the Ferrari Kingdom, she had hardly visited any other planets.
“I did, a little… but I didn’t realize it at the time,” Lan Xing pursed her lips, lowering her eyelids. “I was sent to the Ferrari Kingdom in place of the princess who fled her arranged marriage. I felt very uneasy, unable to sleep at night due to anxiety. That period… was really tough. But thankfully, I came to the Ferrari Kingdom and met you, sister.”
“I can imagine how painful it must have been for you, my poor Xing’er,” Yu Ke gently stroked her cheek, her voice soft. “My dear Xing’er.”
She kissed Lan Xing, their lips meeting with a faint sound. Yu Ke closed her eyes, immersing herself more deeply in the kiss.
The lounge was empty, but Lan Xing still couldn’t bring herself to engage in intimate gestures outside private spaces. She lowered her head to avoid the affectionate kiss, feeling slightly embarrassed. “I… I’ll go find Brother Jun and the others first, to tell them… about going to the base.”
Yu Ke wanted to hold her back, to take things further. She didn’t mind being seen, in fact, she preferred it. Lan Xing belonged to her, and she wanted everyone to know.
Like a hunter claiming their prey, Yu Ke wanted to parade Lan Xing before different people, making it clear that Lan Xing was hers.
“Wait… later, when we’re in the room, with the door closed… mmm…” Lan Xing’s cheeks flushed instantly as Yu Ke captured her lips in a forceful kiss, leaving her breathless.
Surrounded by the scent of Yu Ke’s pheromones, her legs grew weak, her face flushed deeply, and even her ears turned crimson.
She should have responded passionately, but the next moment, footsteps outside the lounge startled her. With all her strength, she broke free from Yu Ke, sitting upright with her head bowed, her face burning as if it might drip blood.
The lounge door swung open, and Sang Jiu stood at the entrance, pushing a small cart, looking puzzled at the two. After a moment, she asked, “Princess, why is your face so red? Do you need me to fetch some ice for you?”
Lan Xing’s face reddened even more. Sang Jiu chuckled, “Did I interrupt something?”
Yu Ke explained, “We were kissing.”
“Oh, what’s the big deal?” Sang Jiu raised her voice slightly. “Princess, are you even avoiding me?”
Lan Xing: “…”
“I’m your personal maid. If this happens again, I hope both of you can just ignore me,” Sang Jiu said seriously, crossing her arms. “What’s so embarrassing about kissing? Why don’t you practice in front of me? You’ll get used to it soon!”
“I… I should go take care of something important first,” Lan Xing hurriedly stood up and, as she dashed past the door, subtly pinched Sang Jiu’s arm to express her slight annoyance.
Sang Jiu turned to Yu Ke in the room, pushing the cart inside. “Our princess is a bit timid, not as open as other star-faring folks. But being conservative has its charms, right?”
Yu Ke replied, “She’s perfect just the way she is.”
“But isn’t she a bit too reserved? Don’t you think so?” Sang Jiu blinked. “The princess… she worries too. She feels she’s not open enough, that she’s not likable…”
“That’s not true,” Yu Ke interrupted. “Xing’er is comfortable with me. I can see that.”
Sang Jiu pouted and smiled, then went back to her work.
Yu Ke also left the lounge. There was no need for her to stay in the cockpit, so she wandered around the ship.
Lan Xing arrived at Zhang Jun’s bedroom door. Coincidentally, the door was ajar, and from outside, she caught a clear view of the scene inside.
Zhang Jun, shirtless and fully immersed, filled the room with the scent of pheromones that spilled into the hallway. He was leaning into another person’s embrace, utterly lost in passion.
Lan Xing: “………”
Their eyes met. Lan Xing’s mind went blank, and she stammered incoherently, unable to form words. After a moment of fumbling, she said nothing, gently closed the door for Zhang Jun, and hurried away, arguably a very considerate gesture.
Zhang Jun: “…”
“Who is it?” Remus’ voice came from behind the door, and Lan Xing felt inexplicably nervous.
Zhang Jun’s voice was muffled and soft as he replied, “It’s the princess.”
“Oh, no wonder,” Remus said. “She even closed the door for us. Did we scare her?”
Outside the door, Lan Xing was indeed frightened. When Yu Ke ran into her, she noticed Lan Xing seemed somewhat dazed. Yu Ke deliberately jumped out from around the corner to playfully scare her, but to her surprise, Lan Xing’s face turned pale.
“Sorry, sorry,” Yu Ke quickly hugged her. “That was stupid of me. I’m sorry, baby…”
Lan Xing buried her face in Yu Ke’s chest, whimpering softly for a moment before saying, “I wasn’t scared at all.”
“Then why do you look like this?”
Lan Xing hesitated, unsure how to respond. She had just run into Zhang Jun and Remus, but she couldn’t understand, how had Zhang Jun suddenly gotten so close to Remus? Wasn’t his crush Annie from All-Free? He’d even talked about becoming a merman just to be with her!
But no matter how close she and Zhang Jun were, it wasn’t her place to interfere in his private life. Accidentally witnessing an intimate moment was already rude enough; discussing it further would be completely inappropriate!
Lan Xing held herself to an extremely strict moral code. As a princess, she had always adhered to a standard of conduct that forbade any behavior she deemed improper. Even after running away from her arranged marriage, this habit remained unchanged.
Though deeply troubled, she kept her mouth shut, avoiding any mention of what she had seen. She changed the subject and steered clear of personal conversations with Zhang Jun.
Four hours later, the spacecraft docked near the Lanis-19 base.
The base’s farm was open to the public, allowing travelers passing through to pick fresh fruits and vegetables at relatively affordable prices.
The crew of the Princess was thrilled. Lan Xing was the first to change into her spacesuit, even preparing containers for harvesting. Zhang Jun and Remus soon joined her. Upon learning the ship had docked at the base, both perked up and started chattering nonstop even before leaving the cabin.
Remus followed closely behind Lan Xing, persistently asking, “Princess, was that you earlier this afternoon?”
Lan Xing tried her best to play dumb. “Huh? What do you mean?”
“This afternoon… outside Jun’s room, that was you, right? I thought about it, and you’re probably the only one thoughtful enough to close the door for us.”
Lan Xing couldn’t bear to discuss it. “I… didn’t see anything…”
Remus, acting foolishly, went on and on. “Aw, that’s a shame. Jun’s got a pretty nice figure, you know…”
Yu Ke sensed something off. “What?”
Zhang Jun immediately interjected, “It’s nothing! Don’t listen to Remus’ nonsense!”
Yu Ke turned to Lan Xing. “Xing’er, what happened?”
Lan Xing stammered, “N-nothing… I actually didn’t see very clearly…”
“You definitely saw! Jun wasn’t wearing anything at the time,” Lan Xing laughed heartily. “It’s fine, we’re all friends here…”
Zhang Jun sighed helplessly. “It’s not what you’re imagining, Sister Ke. Please don’t misunderstand. I was only because…”
“You were walking around the ship naked, and Xing’er saw you?” Yu Ke found it utterly absurd.
“Don’t get worked up…” Remus started to say.
“I… I didn’t see that,” Lan Xing tried to explain, but it only seemed to make things worse. She finally admitted, “I should have knocked first…”
“No, it’s my fault for not closing the door properly,” Zhang Jun said. “I couldn’t find the inhibitor at the time… but it’s not what you think…”
“You didn’t close the bedroom door, didn’t bring an inhibitor, and let Xing’er see you naked? And you have the nerve to say that?” Yu Ke questioned angrily.
Remus also raised his voice, “What’s so strange about that? Her Highness didn’t say anything, so who are you blaming here?”
Yu Ke realized she had overreacted and didn’t reply. After a moment, she chuckled lightly, “No wonder Xing’er was so startled earlier. So, it was you two messing around.”
“Sorry, sorry,” Zhang Jun clasped his hands together sincerely. “I’ll make sure to close the door properly next time. I’m really embarrassed about this!”
“It’s… it’s fine!” Lan Xing immediately spoke up for him. “It was a special circumstance. I’m not angry at all. I’ll be more careful next time too! Sister, you really don’t need to blame Brother Jun for this!”
“Hmm,” Yu Ke said. “I overreacted earlier.”
Remus grinned, “You only have eyes for your little princess. I was invited onto this spaceship too, you know. This is really sad!”
Yu Ke raised an eyebrow and smiled, “You two, have you really established a relationship?”
“Just a temporary mark,” Zhang Jun said, blushing. “Just having Remus help me relieve it temporarily. It doesn’t count as establishing a relationship.”
“Yeah, the effects will disappear in two or three days,” Remus said casually. “I couldn’t not help with something like this, right?”
After chatting for a while, they reached the base entrance, but the relaxed atmosphere didn’t last. Yu Ke was the first to notice something wrong.
“I smell smoke.”
Everyone fell silent.
The base was a large windmill-shaped satellite station orbiting a major planet outside the Lingjiu system. The outer area consisted of farm bases and living stations, while the interior housed equipment like batteries and transmitters. The entrance was located at one of the outer farms.
After the spaceship docked with the base, they walked onto the station in their space suits. What they saw next was a smoking farm, damaged equipment, and killed base personnel.
