- Chapter 53 - Guilt
During the hour waiting for the frigate to arrive, Yu Ke kept thinking about what Jenny had said.
Especially that line: “But you’re not even willing to mark me.”
In that moment, Yu Ke nearly wavered.
She wanted to help Jenny, to offer at least some encouragement and comfort.
But if marking her could provide that encouragement and comfort, then how was Yu Ke any different from those who sold their bodies and souls?
She felt ashamed of her own thoughts. When Lan Xing appeared before her, Yu Ke couldn’t even bring herself to look up.
Surrounded by the ruins and dust left by the explosion, Lan Xing spotted her sitting listlessly on the steps and ran over, arms outstretched, embracing her.
“Sis,” Lan Xing’s voice trembled with tears, “we couldn’t reach you at all. Zhang Jun and I thought you’d been taken by the Jingba Pirates. I… I didn’t know what to do!”
Yu Ke gently patted her back and whispered, “I’m fine, Xing’er.”
“Sis Yu, you really scared us this time,” Zhang Jun said with a half-smile. “That was way too close. Let’s not do this ‘lamb walking into the tiger’s den’ thing again.”
“A hunter always enters the scene disguised as prey,” Yu Ke replied calmly. “Even though we didn’t manage to catch Isabelle this time, we still gathered a lot of useful information.”
Zhang Jun nodded. “We were chased by pirates the whole way and lost one of our engines, but that’s nothing. As long as you’re safe, even if our frigate got blown up, it’d be worth it.”
Yu Ke hummed in acknowledgment and wanted to bring up the matter concerning the Prime Minister, but Lan Xing clung to her tightly, face buried in her chest, seemingly crying.
Yu Ke’s heart trembled, remembering what Lan Xing had said when they parted:
“If anything happens to you, I’ll kill myself to be with you immediately!”
Judging by Lan Xing’s state, was she actually considering suicide?
“I’m fine, Xing’er,” Yu Ke’s voice choked with emotion. “Xing’er, I… please don’t be sad…”
Lan Xing continued holding her tightly. Yu Ke wrapped her arms around her, gently patting her back, and they stayed like that for a long while until Lan Xing gradually calmed down.
Zhang Jun watched them without any discomfort, teasingly making a kissing gesture with his hands and laughing. “Don’t mind me, you two go ahead and kiss!”
Yu Ke: “…”
Lan Xing cried like a little rabbit, her eyes red. She turned away to wipe her tears, crying so hard she nearly lost her breath.
Yet, while she was worrying herself sick over Yu Ke’s safety, Yu Ke might have had another female Omega sitting in her embrace.
Apart from marking, they had done almost everything two women could do together.
Yu Ke couldn’t face Lan Xing with a clear conscience. She asked Zhang Jun for a cigarette, took a drag, and said to him, “Zhang Jun, the Rum family is planning to assassinate your father.”
Zhang Jun almost didn’t process it. “Who?”
“Ivan Rum. His father is Staney Rum. If I’m not mistaken, he probably intends to assassinate the Prime Minister and frame his political rivals, aiming to become the next Prime Minister,” Yu Ke held the slender cigarette between her index and middle fingers, taking another puff. “This is serious. You need to go back and set up an ambush. Ideally, we catch Staney Rum with direct evidence.”
“Is the information reliable?” Zhang Jun tugged at his collar. “Sister Yu Ke, I’m skeptical. My father is on his deathbed, and the Rum family is already the second-in-command in the cabinet. If Staney just waits patiently, he’ll eventually become Prime Minister. Why take the risk of an assassination now?”
“Let me answer your first question. The information should be reliable, and it’s crucial for us. The one who wants Hepburn’s heart is Ivan Rum. If we can bring down the Rum family now, at least Ivan won’t pose a threat to Hepburn anymore.” As Yu Ke spoke, she felt her left hand being touched. She paused, raised her left hand, and rested her right elbow on it while holding a cigarette.
The gesture seemed unintentional, yet it was hard not to read into it.
Even Zhang Jun noticed. Lan Xing stood behind Yu Ke, trying to hold her hand, but she subtly avoided it.
“Sister Yu Ke,” Zhang Jun frowned, “are you alright?”
Yu Ke lifted her eyelids. “Why do you ask?”
“Nothing… really,” Zhang Jun snapped back to reality and rubbed the back of his head. “Although I’m worried about my father, your condition is also concerning. What did Isabelle do to you? Do you need psychological counseling?”
Yu Ke: “Huh?”
“Well,” Zhang Jun’s thoughts were a tangled mess, “I heard that Isabelle is very skilled at psychologically torturing prisoners. You were held for a day, did you suffer any inhuman treatment? I know a very capable psychologist; you might really need to see one!”
“Get lost,” Yu Ke scolded, then turned to Lan Xing, her tone softening. “Xing’er.”
Lan Xing perked up like a cat. “Sister, I’m here.”
Yu Ke ruffled her hair, messing up the wig before smoothing it back down. She stroked the strands twice and said with a smile, “Let’s go back. Once we resolve Hepburn’s matter, we’ll continue our voyage and set off for the next planet.”
Lan Xing looked up at her, her blue eyes sparkling like gemstones, teary and excited. “I really, really miss our days of traveling!”
Yu Ke laughed. “I miss it too. I can’t wait to go somewhere else with you.”
“Hey, you two can’t just do this,” Zhang Jun complained, clearly displeased. “We haven’t been in Datianxi for long, and you’re already eager to leave?!”
Lan Xing smiled at him, her dimples gently curving. “You can come with us. There are still a few rooms left on the Princess.”
“I have no objections,” Yu Ke said, watching Lan Xing with a half-smile. “Once Zhang Jun figures out how to turn into a mermaid, he can take me to Panda Planet too.”
“Are you trying to recruit me onto your ship?” Zhang Jun rubbed his nose. “If the sincerity is there, I might consider it. After all, interstellar travel on a spaceship has always been my dream. It’s just that, as an Omega, personal safety is too important. I can’t just follow anyone around.”
Yu Ke smiled faintly, her tone neither warm nor cold. “Suit yourself. Even if you come aboard, with your half-baked skills, I’m not sure what you’d be good for.”
“I can be a pilot, I have a license! If not, I can cook. Didn’t your last maid run off? I’m an amazing cook! And if all else fails, I can be the mood-setter. Don’t look down on me!”
“We don’t lack that. We have Li Jian’an. If you could help us retrofit the Princess with two laser missiles, that would be a great idea,” Yu Ke said. “We’re bound to encounter pirates again in the future. Without some weapon reserves, we’ll only suffer more losses.”
“Sure, that’s easy enough,” Zhang Jun raised his eyebrows with a smile. “I studied weapon engineering in college. If not for my father’s disapproval, I would have almost joined the Starfleet. He said, ‘What’s an Omega doing playing with weapons? Better study politics and learn to govern the country.’ I listened to him and ended up like this, useless!”
Lan Xing chuckled and turned to Yu Ke. “Sis, why do you think we’ll run into pirates again?”
Because… she wanted to rescue Jenny as soon as possible from the pirates and restore her freedom.
But this was Yu Ke’s personal desire, and the Princess was no longer hers alone. With Zhang Jun joining them, the nature of this ship would change significantly.
She couldn’t dictate the future path for so many people, but she knew what she wanted to do.
“We’ll inevitably run into them. As long as we travel the star routes, we’re bound to encounter those who break the rules. Preparing in advance is just being prudent.”
Lan Xing didn’t ask further. The three of them chatted and laughed as they boarded the aircraft, speeding away from Victoria and heading toward Gana.
Yu Ke didn’t know when she would see Jenny again, but she knew that if she abandoned and forgot her now, she would regret it for the rest of her life.
