Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 31
“Jiang Nian! Jiang Nian! Where has your brush wandered off to?” The stern voice of the art instructor snapped the distracted omega back to reality.
She jolted awake, realizing her left hand had indeed strayed far from the canvas, the colors on her brush completely wrong. Her mind had been wholly occupied with scheming how to test Gu Li’s scent gland, leaving no room for the instructor’s lecture.
Normally it was Mu Lan who got scolded for inattention, but today he was diligently working on his piece. Jiang Nian turned back with a frown, chastising herself internally.
“Your focus is off today. With interviews just months away, do you want to get eliminated with this kind of preparation?” The instructor took her brush to make corrections, then handed back yesterday’s assignment. “Get your act together. This is crunch time, no distractions.”
“Okay.” Jiang Nian nodded obediently, splashing cool water from the bucket onto her rolled-up sleeves to refocus.
Back home, school assignments lay scattered across her desk as Jiang Nian sprawled on her bed, scrolling through her phone.
How could she casually touch Gu Li’s scent gland?
She twirled a strand of hair absently, eyes scanning Baidu’s search results fruitlessly. So annoying.
The omega tossed her phone aside, cocooning herself in blankets until only her slender legs remained visible. She lifted them absently, staring at the blue school uniform pants in a daze.
After her differentiation, hospital tests confirmed her S-class omega status. S-class omegas had heightened alpha pheromone needs that intensified with gland maturation. This explained why Gu Li’s initial reverse-marking had sufficed during her first heat, but now left her perpetually unsatisfied. Continuing to rely solely on her marking him would neither satisfy her needs nor be healthy for Gu Li.
She rolled back into her blanket burrito, closing her eyes to mentally simulate scenarios, but the comfortable bed and quiet room soon lulled her to sleep.
The desk lamp remained on, its light glaring against the blank test papers.
…
“Nian Nian? Time to wake up.” Grandma Jiang knocked, then entered upon hearing no response. There lay Jiang Nian in full uniform, rubbing sleep from her eyes in confusion.
“How did you fall asleep dressed like this? Hurry up, you’ll be late for school. Gu Li’s already waiting downstairs.” Grandma pulled open the curtains, urging her to get ready.
She’d slept like this all night?
Jiang Nian blinked at the alarm clock’s date display before reality hit her.
Oh no!
Jiang Nian scrambled up to check her homework and sure enough, the entire test paper was blank. She shouldn’t have gone to bed without finishing her assignment while obsessing over that matter. Now she’d get scolded at school, this was the first time she’d ever failed to complete her homework.
Maybe she’d been too preoccupied with whether Gu Li would mark her or not. After all, they had plenty of time together ahead, there would be other opportunities. Right now, she needed to focus on her studies.
Stuffing the blank test paper into her bag, Jiang Nian reflected on her actions.
Even by breakfast and when she climbed onto the back of Gu Li’s bicycle, she still wore a dejected expression.
Having slept without properly covering herself the night before, her nose was slightly stuffy, and she felt lightheaded. This time, it wasn’t to test the alpha’s waist strength or flexibility, she instinctively wrapped her arms around the cycling alpha’s waist and rested her forehead against her back.
She dozed lightly the whole way.
Gu Li noticed Jiang Nian had been off since morning. When handing in homework, she seemed dazed, carelessly pulling out her workbook and assignment notebook. The test paper was haphazardly tucked between the pages before being passed to the class representative. The math rep even received the wrong subject’s workbook twice.
Gu Li reached out to check Jiang Nian’s forehead temperature, but before her fingers could make contact, the physics rep, who had been the first to submit assignments came running back.
“Jiang Nian! You handed in a blank test paper. The physics teacher wants you in her office!” The shout drew the entire class’s attention.
Everyone in Class 3 knew how much their physics teacher despised students who skipped homework. The last offender, who left one major question unanswered, had been made to copy it ten times. Now, someone had dared to submit a completely blank test paper? Bold.
Jiang Nian lifted her head from where it had been slumped on her desk and, under Gu Li’s worried gaze, shuffled out of the classroom.
By the end of self-study period, her deskmate still hadn’t returned. As the class lined up for morning exercises, passing by the teachers’ office, they could see Jiang Nian hunched over the physics teacher’s desk, scribbling something. Any students who lingered to gawk were promptly scared off by the teacher’s deadly glare over her glasses.
“Go on to exercises. Don’t forget your homework next time. Bring me the completed test paper along with your written pledge when you’re done.” The physics teacher adjusted her glasses and rapped her knuckles against the desk where Jiang Nian sat obediently making up her work.
Class 3’s formation was already moving downstairs with the rest. Jiang Nian hurriedly placed her test paper back at her seat and dashed for the stairwell. Already feeling unwell, the sudden exertion left her dizzy. Just as she was about to reach her class’s line, her legs gave way, one misstep on the stairs sent her tumbling downward.
“Ah!” She instinctively squeezed her eyes shut.
But the expected pain never came. Instead, she fell into familiar arms, enveloped by the scent of lavender. Her hands hooked around the alpha’s neck, and she instinctively curled closer for security.
“Are you okay?” Gu Li’s voice made her open her eyes. Her left hand rested precisely on the alpha’s nape just above where the gland lay concealed beneath an inhibitor patch.
Overwhelmed by shock and lack of rest the previous night, the omega’s glands had leaked a faint trace of pheromones during the ordeal, causing the alpha holding her closest to twitch her nose slightly.
Her left hand drifted toward the spot where the alpha’s glands were located, brushing against it lightly. Even through the suppressant patch, she could feel the soft gland beneath her fingertips suddenly stiffen under her tentative touch.
“My legs feel weak,” the omega nestled in her arms murmured in response, mentally noting the sensation. To mask the unnaturalness of her actions, she tightened her grip around the alpha’s neck, clinging to Gu Li like a koala.
“Uh, could you two not block the stairway?” The onlooking classmates, aware that morning exercises were about to begin, finally spoke up to interrupt the scene.
“Sorry.” The alpha’s already thin skin flushed crimson in an instant. Adjusting her hold on Jiang Nian, she shifted aside, only for the omega’s arm to press firmly against the back of her neck, right where her glands were. The moment she had caught a whiff of Jiang Nian’s compatible pheromones, the sensitive spot had become painfully vulnerable under the increasing pressure.
She leaned slightly toward Jiang Nian, trying to ease the strain, but the moment her gland escaped the omega’s touch, Jiang Nian immediately tightened her hold again.
Did I scare her that badly when I fell? Why is she clinging so tight?
Frowning, she softened her voice to soothe the omega in her arms. “Don’t be scared, it’s okay now.”
Her left arm supported Jiang Nian while her right hand patted the omega’s back in a steady rhythm. The curious stares of passing classmates only made the omega burrow deeper into her embrace in embarrassment.
For the alpha, the ordeal felt endless, constantly shifting between adjusting her posture and enduring the discomfort. Yet the little omega in her arms remained blissfully unaware.
“It… it hurts, Nian-Nian. You’re squeezing too hard.” The pressure had become unbearable. Jiang Nian suddenly felt the alpha’s gland, which had been pressed against her arm, tremble violently as if provoked, before going completely limp the moment Gu Li released her.
“S-sorry!” Carefully set back on her feet, the omega noticed Gu Li struggling to straighten up and hurried forward in concern. At first, she had only been trying to cover up her earlier actions, but the teasing gazes of their classmates had made her genuinely flustered enough to hide.
Gu Li braced a hand on her knee, the other gingerly covering the back of her neck. After a moment, she managed a pained smile and waved it off. “It’s fine, just… don’t grip so hard next time.”
Her glands weren’t usually this sensitive, it was only because she had caught Jiang Nian’s pheromones that they had reacted so intensely, leading to this predicament.
By now, morning exercises had begun, leaving the stairwell eerily empty. The two of them stood facing each other, the only souls left in the hollow silence.
The scoring recorder for the morning run had probably already noted their names down by now, arriving late would count the same. The two girls simply waited by the stairwell, planning to merge into their class’s formation when it passed by. Gu Li jogged up beside Mu Lan, trying to adjust to the slight discomfort from the stairwell.
The running pace wasn’t fast. As she regulated her breathing, she cautiously touched the back of her neck. It was happening again just like at Jiang Nian’s place earlier. Though her body reacted to the other’s pheromones, the response was confined solely to her scent glands. None of the instinctive marking behaviors their physiology teacher described where alphas would instinctively bare their canines had manifested.
