Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 20
“Be good? Dry your hair before sleeping?” Mu Lan flipped through the compiled responses he’d asked his brother for yesterday, reading them several times but still unable to determine whether this reply indicated interest or not.
“So how did you respond?”
“Last night’s conversation ended with her saying ‘after drying it’ before sleeping.” Jiang Nian expressionlessly handed him the distributed test papers, then turned to hand out the rest.
This made no sense, it was too absurd. The rookie love coach had spent all day yesterday consulting his brother for advice, yet still couldn’t handle this situation.
With some time left before finishing distributing papers, Jiang Nian flipped to the later pages of his notebook and silently memorized the remaining methods.
“It’s okay, everyone feels jealousy. Here’s what we can do find someone to pretend intimacy with, and she’ll show signs of jealousy. That way, we can prove Gu Li has feelings for you too.”
Seeing her approach, Mu Lan leaned in again to offer this newly learned method.
What a terrible idea, absolutely no good.
“No way. I don’t want to make her feel uncomfortable like that.” Jiang Nian moved his head closer, enunciating each word clearly to this clueless alpha.
She took her test paper and sat down, picking up a red pen to correct her mistakes, completely ignoring Mu Lan’s chatter.
The alpha’s head kept inching closer, still trying to contribute to this fledgling romance, only to be pulled back by a hand just as it was about to touch Jiang Nian’s shoulder.
“Classmate Mu, don’t disturb Nian Nian during class time.” Gu Li had just returned from the teacher’s office with competition prep materials when she saw the alpha’s head nearly touching Jiang Nian’s shoulder through the back door.
The movement was so natural, and Jiang Nian showed no intention of avoiding it, an inexplicable surge of jealousy rose in Gu Li’s heart.
“But it’s the long break now.” Mu Lan quietly retorted to the female alpha before him.
Classmates were fooling around everywhere, some even running through the hallway.
“She’s correcting her test paper. Whenever someone is studying, you shouldn’t disturb them.”
This reasoning held absolutely no persuasive power, completely unlike Gu Li’s usual logical arguments.
Mu Lan glanced at her, then exchanged a meaningful look with Jiang Nian, who also seemed surprised by this behavior.
Did this actually work?
Seemed like it.
Their gazes met midair, instantly achieving perfect understanding.
Mu Lan raised his hands in surrender, awkwardly saying, “Alright, my bad. I’ll wait until Nian Nian finishes studying before bothering her.”
He deliberately changed the term of address, wanting to observe Gu Li’s reaction.
“Next period is self-study, you still can’t disturb Nian Nian’s studying.”
Gu Li placed her competition book on Mu Lan’s desk, clearly intending to switch seats. Mu Lan winked triumphantly at Jiang Nian, deliberately leaning close to whisper something in her ear before returning to his seat to watch Gu Li.
Mu Lan stayed put, waiting for Gu Li to speak first.
“Nian Nian, any questions about the test? I can help.” Gu Li deliberately avoided Mu Lan, addressing Jiang Nian directly.
“This… this one.” Dazed, Jiang Nian pointed out a question for Gu Li, helping her push Mu Lan away.
The rookie love coach was discarded after being used, yet seeing this harmonious scene made his sacrifice feel worthwhile. Holding his error-riddled test paper, he nodded sagely and smoothly took Gu Li’s seat.
Today was another day of Young Master Mu’s charitable deeds.
“Gu Li, were you just… jealous?”
Jiang Nian had no mind to listen to Gu Li’s explanations. The moment she put down her pen, she couldn’t help but ask, though she left the question unfinished.
“Nian Nian, it’s best not to start dating before adulthood.” Gu Li pressed her lips together, her fists clenched tightly as she set down her pen. “Romance can really interfere with studies. At least until you get into a good university, hold off on that.”
At least, while she could still see Jiang Nian every day at school, she hoped things would stay that way.
She couldn’t tell if it was possessiveness over her best friend or affection for the treasure she had protected for so long, but she really didn’t like Mu Lan getting so close to Jiang Nian or calling her by such intimate nicknames. The adult alpha in her felt deeply unsettled.
“So, after university, it’ll be, okay?”
Was Jiang Nian this eager to be with Mu Lan?
Lately, Gu Li had been busy preparing for math competitions, while Jiang Nian had been walking home with Mu Lan every day, even attending painting classes together after school. Had their feelings for each other grown this intense already?
Gu Li froze at the question. She thought back to the events in the novel, Jiang Nian and Mu Lan creating art together in the studio, sharing tender kisses after finishing each piece, Mu Lan gently stroking Jiang Nian’s soft hair before pinching her slightly flushed cheeks.
They were soulmates who inspired and elevated each other, muses who fueled one another’s creativity.
They would be that intimate—far beyond the hugs and hand-holding Gu Li and Jiang Nian shared now. Best friends would always remain best friends, while lovers would claim each other, grow old together, and walk side by side until the very end.
“…Yes.”
The word was simple, yet it took her a long time to say it. The protagonists ending up together was inevitable. She was destined to be a side character merely surviving without illness was already a stroke of luck. She didn’t dare hope for anything more.
“Do you think after university, I can be with another alpha?”
The words stung just hearing them, but Gu Li still lifted her head to meet Jiang Nian’s gaze. “Whoever you choose as your partner is your freedom. You deserve love from everyone.”
“And what about you? Can I be with you?”
To hell with playing hard to get. To hell with cautious testing. To hell with dating strategies—Jiang Nian tossed all of Mu Lan’s smooth-talking advice out the window and threw a straight pitch, waiting for the alpha before her to catch it firmly.
The kitten-like omega pressed her paws against Gu Li’s shoulders, forcing her to look directly into her eyes. “You said I deserve love from everyone. Does that ‘everyone’ include you?”
All the loose threads suddenly connected. Every inexplicable flutter of her heart now had a reason. Gu Li felt her pulse kick into a frantic dance, louder than the clamor of students chasing each other outside. A surge of euphoria rushed through her, as if she’d been injected with the most exhilarating drug, she even wanted to leap up and shout to vent the overwhelming joy.
The hands on her shoulders slowly tightened, betraying the other girl’s nervousness. Only then did Gu Li move her own slightly numb arms, ready to pull Jiang Nian into an embrace.
Her own reactions couldn’t lie. She could clearly feel the joy bubbling up inside when Jiang Nian said those wordsthat “everyone” naturally included her. In fact, if possible, she wished that “everyone” meant only her.
“But” Before Gu Li could finish speaking, the kitten-like girl before her suddenly paled. An abnormal flush spread across Jiang Nian’s face as her legs gave way, as if struck by an invisible force. Gu Li caught her collapsing form, alarmed by the terrifying heat radiating from her body.
The classmates who had been pretending not to eavesdrop turned their heads curiously when they didn’t hear the other party’s response to the confession, only to witness this scene.
“This looks just like when my younger sister presented at home. Is Jiang Nian going through secondary gender differentiation?”
The words struck the alpha holding Jiang Nian like lightning. Gu Li frantically retrieved the doctor’s prescriptions from Jiang Nian’s bag and carried her toward the school’s designated differentiation room for such emergencies.
The beta undergoing differentiation was barely conscious. Her scent glands at the nape were flooding with pheromones, all trapped by the suppressant patches. The excessive buildup of omega pheromones caused visible distress, drawing pained whimpers from her.
Her hands fidgeted restlessly against Gu Li’s chest first attempting to tear off the specialized suppressant patches, then seeking comfort from the alpha whose scent she adored. Burying her face in Gu Li’s embrace, she murmured instinctively, “More… not enough… I need more.”
Drenched in sweat, Gu Li finally reached the differentiation room. After settling Jiang Nian on the bed, she administered the doctor’s calming medication. Clutching Jiang Nian’s hand anxiously, she noted the suppressants were meant for potential post-differentiation estrus, not yet necessary.
The kitten-like girl writhed in agony on the bed. No one had warned them: when an omega differentiates, a highly compatible alpha’s presence risks triggering premature rut from the surge of omega pheromones—often leading to forced marking of the vulnerable newly-differentiated omega.
The doctor, having seen their daily visits, assumed they were partners. Wasn’t it natural for a girlfriend to stay during such a pivotal moment?
Even the medication’s effects would improve post-marking.
Gu Li recognized the warning signs when familiar agony lanced through her legs the most excruciating pain she’d endured in this world. Her crimson eyes burned as the torment spread rapidly, dropping her to the floor.
Why? Her rut wasn’t due yet. How could it activate now? Though Jiang Nian’s skin remained unbroken, Gu Li’s nose detected the rich milk tea fragrance seeping through porcelain skin pulsing from the omega’s visible veins.
It hurt, and he was starving. Gu Li crawled forward like a drunkard drawn to fine wine, inching his way toward Jiang Nian who was undergoing differentiation.
