Transmigrated as the Vampire Alpha of the Omega Heroine - Chapter 19
Jiang Nian had fully recovered. The doctor estimated her differentiation period would occur around next week and specifically prescribed medication and suppressants to ensure she could safely undergo differentiation anywhere. He also assigned Gu Li the daily task of providing ten minutes of comfort.
Though this task was already being diligently fulfilled every day.
The second-year high school curriculum was progressing rapidly, and Jiang Nian didn’t want to fall behind. So, she had already returned to school today. With a scheduled tutorial class on Wednesday afternoon, she and Gu Li couldn’t leave school together anymore especially since Gu Li now had competition classes after school every day. The outcome would have been the same regardless.
“Come on, my family’s driver can take you to your tutorial and then drop you home,” Mu Lan said, slinging one strap of her backpack over her shoulder as she addressed Jiang Nian, who was organizing materials at their shared desk.
Had it been an ordinary day returning with Gu Li, Jiang Nian would have already packed up and been waiting by the door.
“Okay,” Jiang Nian replied, neatly arranging today’s homework into her bag before carefully shouldering the art supplies Gu Li had gifted her. She waved at Gu Li, who was heading toward the competition class building after school.
They were both striving for their futures. This temporary separation was the guarantee that they could walk forward together later.
Jiang Nian tightened her grip on her backpack straps and followed Mu Lan out through the classroom’s back door.
“Teacher Gu!” The shout echoed through the entire hallway.
The second-year classes were arranged in descending order. Just a few steps from the back door brought them past Class 2’s entrance. The voice had come from the direction of Class 1, and soon its owner came sprinting down the hall, brushing past Jiang Nian and Mu Lan before stopping in front of Gu Li.
As the girl passed by, that same scent, the one that didn’t belong to Gu Li but had clung to her at the hospital—wafted clearly into Jiang Nian’s nose.
That bitter, unpleasant smell. Jiang Nian froze mid-step, then slowly turned to watch the retreating figure. Her gaze locked onto Gu Li walking shoulder-to-shoulder with someone else, the air around her growing heavy.
“Jiang Nian? Let’s go?” Mu Lan tentatively tugged at her uniform sleeve.
Jiang Nian only turned back after the two figures disappeared from view, her voice distant: “Do you know who that was?”
“Who?” Mu Lan startled at her expression before suddenly understanding. “Oh! That’s Class 1’s academic committee member. She’s in the same math competition group as Gu Li. Since you’ve been absent these past few days, she’s been coming during breaks to ask Gu Li questions. Today just happened to be the first day she didn’t show up since you returned.”
He swallowed before curiously asking, “Why? Didn’t Gu Li mention it?”
“No.” Jiang Nian lowered her head after hearing this, hands gripping her backpack straps as she slowly followed Mu Lan toward the school gates.
“Huh? What kind of behavior is that from Gu Li? And isn’t that girl an omega too? She didn’t even report this to her girlfriend?” Mu Lan leaned in abruptly, only to be pushed away by Jiang Nian’s hand.
“Don’t get too close. My differentiation is coming soon, and exposure to different alpha pheromones could disrupt the process.” Jiang Nian lifted her head to stare at him. “Besides, Gu Li and I aren’t in that kind of relationship.”
If you’re not in a relationship, then why are the things you two do even sweeter than couples? Is this the new standard for friendship these days?
If you’re not in a relationship, then what kind of jealousy were you just eating?
If you’re not in a relationship, then what was that look in your eyes just now like you wanted to devour that omega?
The two had already reached the car driven by Mu Lan’s family chauffeur. Mu Lan, exasperated, held the door open for Jiang Nian and gestured for her to get in. “So?”
“But I like Gu Li,” Jiang Nian said as she bent down to sit, carefully placing her art supplies on her lap and gently smoothing them. “Can you help me? Do you think she could like me back? Like, that kind of liking.”
Mu Lan had just settled into the seat beside her, the car door not even fully closed, when Jiang Nian’s blunt confession left him reeling.
He had always assumed Gu Li, as an alpha, would naturally take the dominant role. But now, it seemed Little Jiang was anything but simple—she had the aura of a top-tier omega. Based on what he knew so far, Gu Li was about to become the pursued one.
In his mind, Gu Li had gone from “yyds” (eternal god-tier) to a small alpha in need of an omega’s initiative.
Mu Lan seriously considered their dynamic, drawing from countless romance films and observations of his friends’ love lives, now positioning himself as a self-appointed love mentor. “I think Gu Li treats you really well. Even if you say you’re just friends, at the very least, she doesn’t treat this friend” he pointed at himself “half as well as she treats you.”
The car slowly made its way to their tutoring location, stopping first at a nearby restaurant. As they got out, Mu Lan, the aspiring love guru, dropped his conclusion: “When Gu Li helped you pick a tutor, she even researched which nearby restaurants were hygienic and suitable for you. She really cares about you. So, if you asked me to pick someone in school Gu Li might like, I’d say it’s probably you.”
Seated in the air-conditioned restaurant, they each ordered dinner. Jiang Nian kept scrolling through her chat history with Gu Li on her phone.
The messages stopped at their mutual “good morning” exchange from earlier that day. She clicked on Gu Li’s profile her WeChat ID was just her initials and birth year. A year older, birthday in March… a Pisces? It kind of fit, but Gu Li didn’t seem the overly sentimental type. Her thoughts raced as she stared at the screen.
Mu Lan tapped the table, snapping her out of it, her food had arrived. She set her phone down.
Originally, she had planned to wait until she presented as an omega, assuming Gu Li would naturally sense the shift in their relationship. They’d focus on college entrance exams together, and once they both got into their dream schools, then she’d confess. But now, with that omega appearing out of nowhere, she couldn’t shake the sense of urgency.
She stirred the noodles in her bowl with her chopsticks and looked up at Mu Lan. “I’m worried.”
“About what?” Mu Lan mumbled through a mouthful of rice.
“That if I say I like her, Gu Li will start avoiding me and I’ll lose everything we have now.”
She was genuinely content with how things were, yet not quite. But she was terrified that taking that one step forward might ruin everything.
“Ah?” Mu Lan didn’t quite understand such a roundabout meaning, but as a trainee love coach now, he couldn’t say “I don’t know” when faced with a student’s question. After pondering for a moment, he cautiously asked, “Should we try some mild probing first?”
“How about this?” For the first time, Nian Nian actively leaned her head forward, listening as the other person whispered in her ear.
The mentor’s studio was filled with many displayed artworks. When the two arrived at the studio, he was even in the middle of completing one of his paintings.
This was that very famous painter not only talented but also hardworking. He had specially arranged spots for the two in his studio, clearly showing some intention of taking them under his wing.
His serious attitude made Jiang Nian push aside all the messy thoughts in her mind and focus on learning from him.
Jiang Nian and Mu Lan each had their own strengths in painting, so the mentor broke down the content, first covering the material useful to both of them together before giving separate instructions to Mu Lan and Jiang Nian individually, assigning them different homework.
Juggling both school assignments and the mentor’s homework, Jiang Nian finished her tasks very late.
She turned off the desk lamp, grabbed her pajamas, and headed to the bathroom.
Her not-too-long black hair was carefully styled, though some parts remained damp, clinging wetly behind her ears. Barefoot, she hopped into bed in a few quick steps, burrowing under the covers and lying still for a while before stretching out a hand to grab her phone from the bedside table.
The screen showed that Gu Li had just sent her a “good night” message two minutes ago. Biting her lower lip, she recalled what Mu Lan had said to her at the café that afternoon.
There were apps now that let you create personalized stickers. She downloaded one and chose a cat-ear filter. Slowly sitting up in bed, she adjusted her clothes and hair, making several stickers of her slightly adorable self on the screen.
Gu Li always called her “little kitten,” so he must like cats, right?
She saved the stickers to WeChat, then quickly opened her chat with Gu Li and sent two of them.
Jiang Nian: [Good night GIF]
Jiang Nian: [Love you, mwah GIF]
In the first GIF, the little kitten in pajamas smiled sweetly before winking with her right eye.
After watching the first GIF, Gu Li moved to the next one. In the “love you, mwah” GIF, Nian Nian leaned in to kiss the screen before slowly pulling back and forming a small heart with her hands, her face slightly flushed.
It almost felt like that kiss could really reach him.
Unconsciously, Gu Li tapped the “add sticker” button, enlarged the stickers to look at them several times, then slowly typed a few words into the chat box.
“Ding.” Jiang Nian had turned her phone face down after sending the stickers, only flipping it back over when she heard the notification.
“Try it send her ‘Love you, mwah’ and see if she replies the same way. My brother and his girlfriend always chat like this. He says it’s a privilege reserved only for couples. Sending ‘good morning’ or ‘good night’ doesn’t count! Who even thinks ‘good night’ means ‘I love you’ anymore?” Mu Lan, the self-proclaimed love coach in training, declared with absolute certainty, tapping her spoon against her lunchbox.
Remembering Mu Lan’s words, Jiang Nian unlocked her phone and opened WeChat, only to find a message from Gu Li staring back at her: “Be good and dry your hair before sleeping.”
