- Chapter 108 - A Little Bit of Whining
Qi Siyu was still reeling from the shock that Shi Ying had actually guessed right, when she heard Gu Qing’s words. In an instant, her feelings shifted from surprise and embarrassment to awkward irritation.
Even though those very words had originally come from her own mouth, hearing them now felt strangely unpleasant.
Did Gu Qing have no confidence in the two of them at all? Hmph!
Qi Siyu couldn’t bring herself to say anything to Gu Qing, so she turned her glare on Shi Ying.
“You really can’t spit out ivory from a dog’s mouth! What nonsense are you talking about? We’re just having a simple, pure romance! I’m not like you—changing partners every other week. I’m serious about this!”
Shi Ying rolled her eyes. Serious, fine—but why so worked up? She took a pitiful-looking bite of lamb chop.
“Alright, alright, I’ll shut up. I just want to see how long this romance of yours lasts.”
“This lamb chop’s pretty good—order two more. What else did you get?”
As she spoke, Shi Ying tried to sneak another piece from Qi Siyu’s plate, only to be blocked by a swift rap of Qi Siyu’s chopsticks.
“Hands off. Get your own from your partner. Gu Qing gave these to me.”
“So stingy. I’ve always shared whatever my partner buys for me with you…” Shi Ying muttered.
Soon, the rest of their dishes arrived. For the sake of good food, Shi Ying kept bickering and stealing bites from Qi Siyu, their playful squabbles filling the table with warmth.
Gu Qing made no attempt to join in their banter, quietly eating at her own pace.
“I’m done,” she said lightly.
Only then did Qi Siyu realize she’d been so focused on verbally sparring with Shi Ying that she’d all but ignored Gu Qing.
“I’m done too.” She hurriedly shoved a few more bites of meat into her mouth. “Let’s go back to the set together. As for you—” she glanced at Shi Ying, “—take your time, idle person.”
She was still chewing as she stood up, but Gu Qing didn’t move. The two locked eyes—one standing, one sitting.
“You’ve got oil on your lips,” Gu Qing remarked.
“Th-then… can you wipe it for me?” In an attempt to make up for neglecting her earlier, Qi Siyu acted on instinct, choosing to playfully plead with Gu Qing.
Half-lowering her lashes, she bent down, shyly offering her face.
Gu Qing didn’t reply. Instead, she took out a wet wipe and gently dabbed at Qi Siyu’s lips.
Her fingers pressed and rubbed lightly through the cool fabric, yet the spots she touched burned with heat.
If it wasn’t for the wet wipe, this would feel like flirting… The thought flashed through Qi Siyu’s mind. Gu Qing is just too good at this—it’s unfair.
“All done. Let’s go,” Gu Qing said coolly.
The chill in her tone instantly pulled Qi Siyu back to reality.
“…Alright.”
As she straightened, she couldn’t help wondering—Gu Qing’s movements had been so practiced. Had she done this for an ex before?
Once the thought took root, it led only to constant comparisons… and constant jealousy.
Walking side by side, Qi Siyu kept sneaking glances at her.
“So… in front of others, do we need to pretend? You’re an actress—dating might hurt your popularity,” she asked suddenly.
“No need. I’m an actress, not an idol,” Gu Qing replied evenly.
“Mm.” That simple answer brightened Qi Siyu’s mood by a third. “A director and an actress can help each other shine. I hope we can be the same—in both life and career.”
Her ex wasn’t a director… right? After brooding over her jealousy for half the day, Qi Siyu decided she needed to overwrite any lingering traces of the past with better, newer memories. That was why she said what she did.
Gu Qing chuckled softly. “Director Qi—trying to make me forget what you said when you were drunk? Should I delete the recording?”
Oh no oh no oh no— In her head, Qi Siyu felt like a frantic groundhog screaming. She’d completely forgotten about that! How could Gu Qing still remember?
“I want our relationship to be pure,” Qi Siyu said seriously, looking at her. “Helping each other is what lovers do. But if it’s not pure, I can’t accept it.”
“Mhm.” The corner of Gu Qing’s lips lifted slightly. “But I’ve always been pure. From the moment I first saw you, I fell for you.”
The words were delivered casually, as if they were nothing more than small talk.
Gu Qing kept walking at her steady pace, but Qi Siyu stopped in her tracks.
Her thoughts tangled—was she thrilled and flustered by that single word fell, or mortified that she’d once drunkenly said such shameful things?
“Why aren’t you moving?” Gu Qing stopped a few paces ahead and turned back.
“I’m sorry,” Qi Siyu said earnestly. “Let me officially apologize now. What I said while drunk wasn’t my true self. From the first time I met you, I genuinely liked you. I hope you won’t hold my nonsense against me.”
“Mhm.” Gu Qing held out her hand. “Come on—we’ll be late.”
She might have looked calm, but in truth, she was already wondering how to smooth things over once Qi Siyu regained her memories.
When the two walked in hand in hand, they startled quite a few people. But the crew was polite—no one gossiped to their faces.
Shi Ying, however, as Qi Siyu’s good friend and an approachable person, became the target for curious inquiries.
Unfortunately for them, even Shi Ying’s gossip-loving heart was left unsatisfied—she had no idea how Qi Siyu and Gu Qing had ended up together. Her curiosity was itching like crazy.
After multiple failed attempts to pry information out of them, Shi Ying decided to use her ultimate weapon.
The next day, Qi Siyu received a call from her mother.
It was lunchtime at the set. Qi Siyu and Gu Qing were sitting with the other actors, eating boxed lunches and chatting about the script.
When her phone rang and she saw it was her mom, she picked up.
“Hi, Mom, missing me already?”
“What? You’re visiting the set this afternoon? Great! Is Dad coming too?”
“Oh, okay. Then bring me two cups of Uncle Ye’s soy milk tea on the way—it’s amazing.”
After hanging up, Qi Siyu’s mood improved. The rough filming that morning had left her a bit sour.
“Alright, let’s get back to it,” she said cheerfully.
Once everyone finished eating and chatting, they went off to find a spot to rest.
Qi Siyu told Gu Qing, “My mom’s coming by this afternoon. I asked her to bring soy milk tea from this shop near my place—it’s so good. I love it. You’ll have to try it and see if you like it.”
“Mm.” Ever since overhearing Qí Sīyu’s phone call, Gu Qing had been a little tense.
Qí Sīyu’s mother was coming to visit the set — which meant the two of them would meet.
From Qí Sīyu’s occasional remarks, Gu Qing had pieced together an image of her mother: warm, gentle, endlessly tolerant toward her daughter.
But that was only Qí Sīyu’s perspective. Gu Qing couldn’t be sure if her mother was truly easy to get along with.
At least in the novel’s world, Gao Lanyi was anything but.
“Don’t be nervous.” Qí Sīyu took Gu Qing’s hand. She couldn’t see any obvious change in Gu Qing’s expression, but somehow she just knew Gu Qing was nervous.
Or maybe it was simply that she thought Gu Qing should be nervous, and so she acted accordingly.
“My mom’s a sucker for pretty faces — she adores good-looking girls. And she’s got a great temper. I’ve never seen her be mean, not even when her students acted up. She never raised her voice or scolded harshly.”
Qí Sīyu’s introduction was mostly glowing praise, all meant to reassure Gu Qing that her mother would be easy to talk to.
Gu Qing gave a quiet “Mm” and squeezed her hand back. “I’ll try not to be nervous.”
Qí Sīyu flashed a grin, teeth bright white. “If I was meeting your parents right now, I’d probably be so nervous I’d keep running to the bathroom.”
“I don’t have parents. You wouldn’t need to be nervous.” Gu Qing said.
“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up something painful.” Qí Sīyu almost forgot that during Gu Qing’s audition, she’d seen in her résumé: both parents deceased.
“It’s not painful. Everyone has their own fate and life to live.” Gu Qing rarely thought of her parents — it had always been that way.
Longing… was an emotion that seemed to belong only to Qí Sīyu.
Even so, Qí Sīyu still felt a twinge of guilt.
When Gu Qing went to touch up her makeup, she quickly messaged her mother: first telling her she had a girlfriend, then mentioning Gu Qing had no parents, asking her to avoid related topics.
Gao Lanyi, reading the message riddled with typos, could feel her daughter’s fluster through the screen. It was obvious that she must have just brought it up in conversation.
If not for that, Xiao Yi probably wouldn’t have voluntarily told her she was dating someone at all.
Thanks to Shi Ying’s tattling, Gao Lanyi had learned that her daughter had started dating after knowing someone barely over a month. That piqued her curiosity — hence this set visit.
She replied to Qí Sīyu, then asked about the girl’s likes.
Qí Sīyu racked her brain but couldn’t think of any clear hobbies or preferences, except one: her shampoo, body wash, and lotion were all lemon-scented, and she always carried lemon candies.
That realization left her a little disheartened. As a girlfriend, she should know her partner inside and out. Clearly, she wasn’t doing her job well enough.
Once Gao Lanyi got the reply, she added a few lemon-flavored drinks and desserts to the treats she was bringing to the set that afternoon.
By evening, the breeze was gentle, the sunset warm. Gao Lanyi arrived with her catering cart — something she was quite experienced at — to treat the cast and crew.
After exchanging pleasantries with the producer and a few assistant directors, she carried the milk tea her daughter had specifically requested, along with specially prepared desserts, to find her.
Today’s filming was running a bit behind schedule, so Qí Sīyu wasn’t done yet.
Instead, Gao Lanyi saw Gu Qing at work. In this scene, the heroine was confronting her adoptive parents’ family — cold and merciless. Even from a distance, the chill she exuded was palpable.
Such good acting, Gao Lanyi thought. She’d met plenty of big-name actors in the industry, but this girl’s skills rivaled some of the veterans. Xiao Yi had truly found a gem.
When filming wrapped, Qí Sīyu dashed over with Gu Qing in tow. “Mom — mom, mom, this is Gu Qing, my girlfriend. Gu Qing, this is my mom.”
“Hello, Auntie.” Gu Qing’s demeanor was cool and poised, yet impeccably polite.
“Hello, hello! This is the soy milk tea Xiao Yi asked for, still warm. Have a taste.” Gao Lanyi’s smile was warm and gentle.
“Thanks, Mom~” Qí Sīyu took the milk tea, popped in a straw for Gu Qing, handed it to her, then got her own. “Come on, let’s sit in the lounge and talk.”
Walking beside Qí Sīyu, Gu Qing somehow seemed a little… obedient.
Qí Sīyu, watching her closely, felt momentarily dazed — then giddy. Hehe, she’s this nervous because she likes me so much.
“I just came to see how you’re doing. As long as you’re happy, I’m happy. The other day, when Xiao Yi worked herself into the hospital and wouldn’t let us visit, I was worried sick. Now that she has you, you two can take care of each other, and I’ll be much more at ease.” Gao Lanyi grew fonder of Gu Qing the more she looked — such a good, sweet child, and somehow her daughter had managed to bring her into their family.
Qí Sīyu muttered, “I sent you the check-up report — healthier than an ox! Shi Ying was just overreacting.”
But Gu Qing nodded along with Gao Lanyi’s words. “Staying up late is bad for your health. I’ll make sure she keeps a proper schedule.”
If not for the system, she might have lost her daughter forever.
To her surprise, Gao Lanyi was truly easy to get along with. The only similarity to the novel’s version was how much she loved her daughter.
The three of them shared a meal before Gao Lanyi finally left.
That night, before bed, Gu Qing stepped out of the bathroom to find Qí Sīyu already lying under the covers, eyes closed, hands folded neatly over her stomach in a perfect sleeping posture.
Gu Qing sat down, pinched her cheek, poked her waist — no reaction.
She leaned down, kissed her, let her tongue trace along the red lips, but found no chance to slip past her teeth.
“You said you’d make sure I keep a proper schedule,” Qí Sīyu mumbled. “It’s bedtime now.”
She’d been waiting all night for this — smug and self-satisfied.
“Alright, let’s sleep then.” Gu Qing switched off the light and climbed into bed.
Qí Sīyu froze, completely blindsided. Wait, no — I was just being dramatic. Don’t actually go to sleep!
