Transmigrated as the Movie Star’s Little Good for Nothing - Chapter 3
“Wow, whose child is this?”
Overjoyed, Xiang Yuyan quickly sat down on the living room sofa and waved at the adorable little dynamic presence.
“Come here, come closer so uncle can get a good look at you. You’re so cute! Why are you hiding and afraid to see people?”
“Young Mistress…” Xiao Mei looked troubled, squatting down to shelter the little toddler in her arms. “I’m sorry, I violated the management rules and brought the child over without permission.”
“It’s fine, stand up first.”
Gu Pingyue sat down next to Xiang Yuyan and gestured for Xiao Mei to bring the child closer.
“Is this your child? If you’re too busy with work to look after him, you can bring him over more often to play…keeping him in the backyard won’t be any trouble at all.”
“Setting work aside, with a child this small, it’s always more reassuring to keep them close by where you can watch them.”
Neither Gu Pingyue nor Xiang Yuyan were demanding people; they usually interacted with the domestic staff quite casually. Now, with a newborn having just joined the household, they were in high spirits and naturally even more lenient, completely unbothered by Xiao Mei’s actions.
Not only did they not mind, but they were also eager to tease the little cutie in Xiao Mei’s arms.
“He’s not my child. He’s… a neighbor’s kid.”
Xiao Mei picked up the little guy and walked over to the young master and mistress.
“His father is away from home year-round, and his mother doesn’t really look after him, so I, as a neighbor, have been taking care of him.”
“His parents barely take care of him?” Xiang Yuyan frowned, exchanging a glance with Gu Pingyue.
For the Gu-Xiang couple, who had just welcomed their own newborn home, this was incredibly hard to believe. How could any parents in this world not love their child, leaving such a small, adorable baby to be cared for by someone else?
Could it be that the child wasn’t theirs biologically, but had been taken in?
“Yes, because the circumstances of this child’s birth are quite complicated and full of hardships…” Xiao Mei’s voice grew softer and softer, as if it were a long and difficult story to explain.
Her brief elaboration seemed to confirm the shared suspicion of the Gu-Xiang couple.
Ultimately, it was someone else’s family matter, and it wasn’t right for them to pry. Xiang Yuyan simply changed the subject, giving Gu Pingyue a nudge to get her husband to take the toddler.
“Take him, I want to get a proper look at the baby. Is the little guy a boy or a girl?”
The baby looked to be about one year old, and distinct gender characteristics weren’t obvious yet. He could stand and walk, though a bit unsteadily; he was still at that chubby stage where he could easily be lifted off the ground.
At this age, babies usually start recognizing faces and are typically wary of strangers, resisting being held by them. Yet, this little baby was very friendly and naturally accepted Gu Pingyue’s embrace.
“Hold… hold!”
The baby lifted his tiny hands, gently poking Gu Pingyue’s face with a short, stubby finger, and let out a giggle.
“Hold!”
The hearts of the two novice parents melted instantly at the baby’s wide-mouthed smile. Holding the fast-asleep Gu Congjue with one hand, Xiang Yuyan reached out with the other to gently pinch the little cutie’s cheek, cooing endlessly.
“So cute!
“Oh my goodness, baby, your little teeth are so tiny and perfect! Can you show me your little teeth again?”
“He’s a baby boy!” Seeing that the master and mistress were getting along well with the little one, Xiao Mei breathed a sigh of relief and introduced him, “He’s almost a year old, and he has a very lively, cheerful personality.”
“Almost a year old? Then isn’t he… a bit on the small side?”
Children’s clothes are thick, making it hard to see their actual build. Only after truly wrapping his arms around the baby’s small frame did Xiang Yuyan realize with a start: Is this little guy just puffy?
“He hasn’t been eating properly, has he?” Heartbroken, Xiang Yuyan looked at the little baby cradled on his right, and then at his own biological child in his left arm. “The child is still so small. If he eats his fill, he can grow a bit rounder. How did he end up so thin and small?”
Although his own biological son had weighed only 5.2 pounds at birth, after a week of relentless effort from him and Gu Pingyue, the boy had already reached 6 pounds!
Gaining that much in a single week was an extraordinarily gifted feat! Xiang Yuyan would occasionally poke the boy’s cheek, jokingly calling him a “useless little pig.”
Xiao Mei explained that the baby’s parents didn’t pay attention, and they wouldn’t even realize when the formula at home was completely empty. Xiao Mei herself wasn’t well-off; she shared a rented apartment with a friend and had to pinch pennies for her own expenses, making it impossible to scrape together extra money to buy infant formula and baby food.
The baby was still small, with his teeth and digestive system not yet fully developed, so he couldn’t eat normal food. Xiao Mei could only buy cartons of milk to warm up, cook some thin porridge, strain out the rice water, and mix it with a tiny bit of finely minced meat to feed him.
“Taking care of a child is quite a hassle, and neither my friend nor I have any experience. But the child is just too small, and we… we just didn’t have the heart to watch him fend for himself,” Xiao Mei said with a bitter smile.
Both Xiang Yuyan and Gu Pingyue fell into a somber silence.
Suddenly, Gu Pingyue had an idea and gave Xiang Yuyan a meaningful look.
Highly intuitive, Xiang Yuyan caught the signal and cleared his throat lightly. “You just said this little baby is almost a year old? That’s perfect. I have tons of things for one- and two-year-olds in my storage room: formula, clothes, and little shoes.
“My own little slacker can’t use them anytime soon anyway. Before you head home after your next shift, just take them all with you.”
Flustered, Xiao Mei hurriedly shook her head in refusal. “No, no, no…I can’t! I came here to work and help out, I’m a servant of the Gu family! How can I take a salary and also take things from the household?”
“It’s fine, just take them,” Gu Pingyue chimed in to help. “Is there anyone in this house who doesn’t know my wife’s personality? He just loves to shop randomly, and once he starts hoarding things, he can’t stop. By the time these things can actually be used a year or two from now, I bet he’ll have long lost interest in them.”
“Hmph.” Xiang Yuyan snorted in mock annoyance, casting a sidelong glance at Gu Pingyue. “Did it spend that much of your money? Look at you acting so heartbroken.”
They appeared to be bickering, but they were actually putting on a show for Xiao Mei. The items in the storage room had been personally handpicked by the couple in baby boutiques, and they both cherished them deeply.
But things for their own child could always be bought again; an opportunity to help this little baby might only come once.
Since they put it that way, Xiao Mei could only gracefully accept the kindness.
Cradled by the couple, the little baby seemed to understand the conversation between the adults and sense that the people on either side of him were helping him. He actually rested his chubby little paws on Gu Pingyue and Xiang Yuyan’s arms, baring his tiny teeth in another bright smile.
Melting all over again, Xiang Yuyan proactively positioned his own sleeping child so the cute little baby could see him. “Want to look at uncle’s baby? You’re the big brother. Why don’t you and little brother touch foreheads?
“Come, come, let’s touch foreheads with little brother!”
During this deep sleep, Gu Congjue felt as though he was having a “dream.”
He rarely dreamed. Ever since his reincarnation, what he experienced while sleeping was warmth and a vast expanse of pure white…the exact opposite of the dark, freezing world of his past life.
Bound, yet also protected by an infant’s physical form, he could rest peacefully within this warm, pure white space. The brain that had spun at high velocity for over a decade could finally relax its nerves completely.
Yet, for the very first time, visuals began to form within his pure white space.
The white space was split right down the middle; one side remained pure and warm, while the other turned into a familiar, dark, and icy abyss.
Amidst the howling cold wind and blowing snow of that dark space, Shen Yanxing’s figure materialized.
“Shen Yanxing!” Overjoyed, he called out frantically to the boy.
He wanted to pull Shen Yanxing, who was right within arm’s reach, into his warm white space. He clearly saw the person right before his eyes, but when he reached out, he couldn’t touch him no matter what.
“Shen Yanxing!” Growing even more anxious, Gu Congjue sprinted, trying to close the distance. “Are you cold? Do you want to come over to my side? It’s great over here, safe and warm!”
He ran with all his might, yet he couldn’t narrow the distance between himself and Shen Yanxing at all.
He shouted even louder, doubling his effort, “Come over quickly, it’s really nice on my side! I have a pair of ‘parents’ now. My dad is a guy, and my mom is also a guy, although—”
Although they are a bit strange and unreliable, they are both very good to me, and they cherish me so, so much.
If you come over to my side, I won’t hesitate to share half of this affection with you!
If you come here, I can also openly confess and propose to you! We might even become just like my ‘parents’ in this life, becoming very, very good…
Before Gu Congjue could finish his sentence, and before he could even flesh out the thoughts expanding in his mind, Shen Yanxing suddenly turned around!
The vast distance that he couldn’t bridge despite running with all his might vanished in an instant. According with the movement of Shen Yanxing turning his head and smiling, Gu Congjue distinctly felt Shen Yanxing’s forehead pressing against his own, their noses brushing past each other.
Shen Yanxing’s eyes were still so beautiful and resilient, looking as if they held trillions of stars. Mesmerized by those gorgeous eyes, Gu Congjue lost his focus. In that brief window of just two or three seconds, Shen Yanxing vanished.
The words he hadn’t heard clearly were imprinted onto Gu Congjue’s mind like lip-reading.
Staring intently at the spot where Shen Yanxing’s lips had just moved, he finally deciphered what Shen Yanxing had said:
“Wait for me.”
The overly realistic sensation caused Gu Congjue to snap out of his dream instantly, opening his still-groggy eyes. But this time, the person meeting his gaze wasn’t the Shen Yanxing from his dream, but Xiang Yuyan, who was cradling him.
“Oh, the useless little pig is awake?”
Xiang Yuyan tapped his biological child’s nose and carefully stood up with the baby in his arms.
“Hold on a bit, we’ll make some milk for you once we’re back in the room.
“Pingyue, Pingyue, quickly ask someone to bring the backpack upstairs. Our son’s bottle and nipple are inside. Have them take it out, soak it in hot water to sterilize it, and then…”
Gu Congjue tried to scan his surroundings to look for the vanished Shen Yanxing. Unfortunately, his spine couldn’t straighten yet, and his neck was still very soft; he couldn’t even manage a simple action like turning his head, let alone looking around left and right.
Amidst Xiang Yuyan’s careful steps upstairs, Gu Congjue was carried back into the master bedroom where the Gu-Xiang couple slept.
Only after the master and mistress left did Xiao Mei dare to show her joy. Guiding the unsteadily walking baby toward the backyard by his little hand, she bent down slightly and whispered to him happily:
“This is wonderful, Yanxing. Not only do we have formula to drink, but we also have new clothes and new shoes to wear!”
