Transmigrated as the Movie Star’s Little Good for Nothing - Chapter 2
A week later, it was once again time for the postpartum papa and the newborn to have their medical checkups.
Gu Congjue had been woken up by hunger early in the morning and was immediately scooped up for a feeding. Letting his survival instincts take the wheel, he mechanically sucked on his bottle while being cradled and swayed back and forth by his “Dad,” Gu Pingyue, drifting in and out of a heavy daze.
“Ugh, this is so frustrating.”
Through his half-asleep haze, Gu Congjue heard his “Mom,” Xiang Yuyan, grumbling.
“Are we actually going to pass the checkup today? I want to go home early to start working on the album. If I don’t get a move on, I’m afraid next year’s concert won’t make it in time for the summer break. I wanted to leave the day before yesterday when you weren’t here, but the doctor absolutely refused. I argued with him for ages and almost lost my temper.”
This wasn’t the first time Gu Congjue had heard Xiang Yuyan complaining about wanting to go home. During his week-long stay in the hospital for observation, he had heard it at least three times.
Bound by his infant body, Gu Congjue’s periods of true alertness were fleeting. For every 40 to 55 minutes he managed to stay awake, he would uncontrollably plunge back into a two-to-four-hour deep sleep.
This endless cycle of slumber fractured his train of thought and observation, causing his perception of time to completely detach from reality. He could swear he had only arrived in this new world yesterday, but the reality was… a whole week had already passed?
Fortunately, waking up for about four hours in total each day gave him just enough time to engage in staring contests with his new “parents.”
Even in his light sleep, he could faintly catch snippets of the outside world’s conversations. Over the course of the week, he had managed to piece together quite a few reliable pieces of “intelligence.”
For instance, his parents in this new world were an incredibly unreliable, goofy pair of husbands. Only when they discussed their work did they show a shred of seriousness…and even then, it was just a shred.
“What’s the rush? Would a few days really make that much of a difference?”
Gu Pingyue held the baby with one arm while steadying the milk bottle with his other hand.
“We held the press conference the day before yesterday and hit the newspapers yesterday, so everything that needed to be addressed with the fans and moviegoers has been taken care of. They all understand, they’re supportive, and they’ll definitely wait for you. So just relax and focus on recovering first, alright?”
Press conferences? Hitting the newspapers? These ancient terms made Gu Congjue feel a sudden wave of vertigo as he sucked on his milk and eavesdropped.
Then it clicked: Right, this is the time I was born!
It wasn’t 2022 anymore; it was 2005.
“How am I supposed to relax?” Xiang Yuyan sniffled, feeling aggrieved all over again as he wiped the corner of his eye.
“It’s all because of our son. Look at him, just look at him. He’s so ugly, his voice is grating, and he’s tiny. He was only five pounds two ounces at birth, barely anything! The nurse said the little baby in the room next door weighed a whopping seven pounds!”
Listening through his half-asleep state, Gu Congjue felt a surge of speechlessness.
Here it goes again. My ‘mom’ is trash-talking me again.
“What’s going to happen to the foundation we built in the entertainment industry when we get old and have to retire?” Xiang Yuyan’s voice cracked emotionally. “The little useless thing didn’t inherit a single good trait from either of us! Who is going to inherit all our amazing resources and connections?”
Xiang Yuyan was deeply, genuinely devastated, his words laced with dramatic sorrow. Anyone listening in without context would think the Gu family dynasty was collapsing tomorrow!
Who would have guessed that the target of this intense lamentation was a baby who had been born exactly seven days ago?
Gu Congjue wondered if this was really going to be okay. Could this utterly flighty man actually handle the responsibilities of being a “mother”?
“Look at you, getting all worked up again,” thankfully, Gu Pingyue was much more grounded and knew to defend his son. “He’s still small…it’s only been a few days since he was born. He has plenty of time to grow and achieve great things. We need to be patient.”
Still clamping his mouth around the nipple, Gu Congjue couldn’t help but coo in agreement.
Exactly. What kind of parent starts writing off their kid from day one?
“Even if he really doesn’t amount to anything and stays a little useless thing his whole life, well… that’s still no reason for you to push yourself so hard,” Gu Pingyue sighed softly. “I can just film a few more movies. Our family has enough wealth to ensure he lives a comfortable, carefree life forever. Bottom line: I can’t let you overwork yourself. You have to take care of your body first.”
Gu Pingyue, who had sounded perfectly sensible just a second ago, seamlessly dialed into Xiang Yuyan’s dramatic wavelength by the next sentence.
“Hubby,” setting aside the empty bottle, Gu Pingyue sat down at the edge of his partner’s hospital bed while holding their son. “You’ve worked so hard. No matter what, I won’t let you tire yourself out ever again!”
Gu Congjue was completely at a loss for words.
…I almost forgot. These two are cut from the exact same cloth.
Feeling thoroughly miffed, Gu Congjue squirmed his tiny body in Gu Pingyue’s arms, letting out an annoyed little “gurgle” sound.
This tiny protest was instantly written off as adorable baby wriggling and completely ignored by the couple. Leaning into each other, the husbands playfully sighed over their “failed parenting” while using the mutual comfort as an excuse to happily flirt with one another.
Cradled tightly between his parents, the post-meal fullness finally brought a wave of heavy sleepiness over Gu Congjue. Yet, the stubborn spark of indignation lingered in his chest, making him fight the pull of sleep for a long time before his eyes finally closed.
He made up his mind. In this lifetime, he was going to unleash every ounce of his talent to become an absolute, untouchable prodigy.
He was going to make these two trash-talking parents eat their words!
The medical checkup went smoothly. The incision on Xiang Yuyan’s abdomen was healing rapidly, and the baby was developing well, with all his metrics completely normal.
Though the doctor recommended staying another week for observation, Xiang Yuyan had no interest in resting at the hospital; he just wanted to get home, reset his condition, and dive straight back into work. Backed by his own stubbornness against the dual advice of his doctor and husband, Xiang Yuyan held his ground firmly: I am going home!
As they were processing the discharge paperwork to leave, some media outlet apparently caught wind of it. Armed with video cameras and long boom mics, they blocked the exit right in the parking lot.
Gu Pingyue had to shield his husband and child while simultaneously fending off the relentless reporters. By the time they successfully scrambled into their private car, Gu Pingyue realized he was drenched in a cold sweat.
“Are you okay, Yanyan?” He immediately checked on his family. “Did you pull your stitches? What about the baby? Is he wrapped up tightly?”
“I’m fine. I’ve got the baby secure in my arms, totally shielded.”
Xiang Yuyan looked down adoringly, nuzzling his forehead against the sleeping infant in his lap.
“The chaos outside was so loud, yet he slept right through it like a log! He’s so good. Look at him, not crying or making a fuss, just sleeping peacefully. Isn’t he just the cutest?”
The little baby exuded a sweet milky scent. Xiang Yuyan took a deeply satisfied breath of it and gently rubbed the baby’s tiny tummy.
This child had come as a complete surprise. If Xiang Yuyan hadn’t fainted from exhaustion after a concert and been rushed to the hospital for a checkup and an IV drip, his pregnancy might have gone unnoticed for a long time.
The probability of a male pregnancy was statistically minuscule compared to women. Coupled with anatomical limitations, pregnancies in male papas carried a higher risk of congenital defects, which was why most same-sex couples chose not to take such a dangerous gamble.
But Gu Pingyue and Xiang Yuyan had rolled the dice without a single shred of hesitation.
Even though they were still incredibly young…one 20, the other 21…and right at the peak of their skyrocketing careers, standing at a massive crossroads in life, they still chose to take the leap.
They loved each other too deeply, and they cherished this miracle child far too much…knowing that if they let this chance go, they might never get another.
“Yeah, he really is precious,” Gu Pingyue moved with practiced gentleness, navigating around Xiang Yuyan’s tender spots to click his seatbelt into place. “Looking at him makes me realize our choice was right. It was entirely worth it.”
Gu Pingyue gently took Xiang Yuyan’s hand.
Only in these quiet, enclosed spaces, away from their son’s waking eyes, did the young couple allow themselves to project a rare glimpse of maturity and grounded stability.
“This is the child we brought into the world with nothing but love and anticipation. He will grow up strong…and he will be extraordinary!”
“Is that what you think?” Xiang Yuyan extended a finger, gently poking his son’s chubby cheek.
After a week of proper nourishment, the baby’s skin had finally turned smooth and radiant, though it was still so delicate that a healthy, rosy flush bloomed right through.
“Personally, I hope he doesn’t feel pressured to be wildly ambitious or successful. As long as he grows up healthy, even if he achieves absolutely nothing and turns out to be a total goofball, a little useless thing…
“That would still be wonderful.”
The two shared a warm smile, leaning their shoulders together as they silently watched their newborn sleep.
Deep in his slumbers, Gu Congjue had no idea what was being said around him. Snug in Xiang Yuyan’s embrace, his only fleeting thought was how warm it felt.
It was so warm, in fact, that it felt a bit hot.
He began to question his internal calendar. Is it really winter right now?
Since when was winter this cozy?
The Maybach carried the family of three smoothly back to the Gu family’s private villa located in the Choan District of North Capital. Having received the heads-up, the household staff had already lined up by the garage entrance early, practically pushing past one another to catch the first glimpse of the newborn master.
“Young Master, Young Mistress, did you bring the Little Master back?” The staff’s excitement rivaled that of the paparazzi outside. “What does he look like? Let us see!”
“Don’t crowd, don’t crowd, everyone will get a turn!” Gu Pingyue called out, gesturing for the staff to clear a path. “The baby is sleeping right now, so let’s keep it down. Anyone who wants to see him can line up tonight after dinner during his feeding time, okay?”
With the young master laying down the law, the servants couldn’t argue. They reluctantly dispersed, turning their heads back every three steps to stare longingly at the bundle wrapped securely in the young mistress’s arms.
The staff’s enthusiastic welcome filled the entire villa with a vibrant, joyful atmosphere.
The arrival of a newborn was always a beautiful milestone, and seeing such a warm reception brought genuine smiles to both Gu Pingyue and Xiang Yuyan.
In such a bright and lively setting, anyone standing apart from the crowd stood out instantly. After laughing along with the group, Xiang Yuyan noticed a maid standing far in the distance and asked curiously:
“Hey… you’re Xiao Mei from the kitchen staff, right? Why are you hiding all the way over there? Don’t you want to see the baby?”
The girl named Xiao Mei first nodded, then quickly shook her head.
Her ambiguous response left Xiang Yuyan even more baffled.
Before he could ask further, a round, chubby little figure suddenly materialized from behind Xiao Mei’s skirt.
The toddler was tiny, clinging tightly to one of Xiao Mei’s pant legs. He tried his absolute best to tuck his plump little body out of sight, yet he couldn’t stop his mop of fluffy hair from peeking out, his wide eyes blinking in pure wonder as he stared intently at Xiang Yuyan and the bundle in his arms.
The moment their eyes locked, the little guy shrank his neck back in a panic, covering his own eyes in a bout of adorable self-delusion as he whispered a tiny protest to himself:
“N-No look!”
