Transmigrated as the Movie Star’s Little Good for Nothing - Chapter 4
When Gu Congjue was about five months old, the Gu-Xiang couple took him to get his household registration sorted out.
Long before his birth, they had already locked in the name “Gu Congjue” for him. Occasionally, while being bottle-fed and staring blankly into his parents’ eyes, he would hear his rather unreliable folks call him “Little Cong.”
“Gu… Cong… Jue?”
Xiang Yuyan tapped a rhythmic beat on Gu Congjue’s little tummy and let out a wide yawn.
“Can you drink any slower? It’s taken you half a year just for a few gulps of milk. By the time you finish, I’ll have managed to lull myself to sleep.” Xiang Yuyan rubbed his eyes, looking thoroughly exhausted. “Hurry up, hurry up. Once you’re done, I still have to wipe your mouth and wash your face.”
Gu Congjue remained completely unbothered by the rush. Holding the bottle with one tiny hand, he mechanically sucked on the nipple…making loud, squelching noises…while his mind wandered back to the matter of his name and household registration.
Thank goodness. It’s wonderful that my name in this life is exactly the same as my last.
The name “Gu Congjue” had been his identity for nearly eighteen years in his previous life, and it carried immense weight. It wasn’t just that he was used to being called that; it was because the name preserved his past…it held the memories of his previous lifetime.
He was determined to carry forward Shen Yanxing’s hopes for him and live this new life to the absolute fullest.
Not only would he build a good life for himself, but he would also search tirelessly for Shen Yanxing’s reincarnation. He wanted so badly to share his joys, to look Shen Yanxing in the eye and say: I’m not that unwanted kid anymore…the one without parents whose registration was passed around thousands of times because nobody wanted to take him in.
Now, I carry the love and expectations of parents. I am no longer a solitary shadow, entirely alone in the world!
Yet, as heartwarming as this reality was, it constantly clashed with Gu Congjue’s lingering discomfort regarding this world where men could give birth.
Every time he felt a surge of gratitude for his safe, warm, and comfortable environment, he would look up at his “parents” and suddenly remember a jarring fact about his current mom and dad…
They were both men.
He wasn’t sure if this strange feeling could be described as a “discrepancy.” He had been in this new world for over five months, yet he hadn’t managed to utter a single “Papa” or “Mama.”
As an infant who hadn’t even hit his first year, Gu Congjue was incredibly quiet. He rarely even made typical baby babbles, remaining as silent and stoic as a sealed jar.
“What are you staring at me for?” Halfway through his musings, his gaze was sharply intercepted by Xiang Yuyan.
Xiang Yuyan reached out practiced fingers and gently flicked the corner of the baby’s mouth, a silent urge for him to hurry up and finish his meal.
“Eat up, you little mute. Look at you, is my face really that interesting? You just stare and stare but won’t call me ‘Mom.’ Having a son like you is going to drive me to an early grave.”
Gu Congjue quickly resumed his sucking, silently rolling his eyes at Xiang Yuyan in his mind.
Great. First I was a ‘little useless thing,’ then a ‘little pig,’ and now I’m a ‘little mute’?
It wasn’t that he couldn’t speak; he just couldn’t bring himself to say the words.
Leaving aside the fact that he had never known parental warmth in his past life…making him utterly clueless about how to call someone mom or dad, let alone how to interact with parents…there was the glaring issue of their age gap!
Gu Pingyue was twenty-one this year, and Xiang Yuyan was twenty. Compared to Gu Congjue, who had been just shy of eighteen when he died unexpectedly in his previous life, this couple was incredibly, bafflingly young!
They were so young that Gu Congjue couldn’t view them as elders at all. To him, they felt more like slightly older brothers.
Faced with the faces of two “big brothers,” how on earth was Gu Congjue supposed to call out “Papa” and “Mama”?
“Why are you picking a fight with our son again?”
Gu Pingyue climbed onto the bed from the other side and lay down right next to their little bundle of joy.
“Stop calling him a little mute. Just because he’s small doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand; babies are perceptive, he can probably feel what you’re saying. If you keep calling him that, what if he becomes rebellious when he grows up? He’ll talk even less.”
Biting down on his bottle, Gu Congjue propped his small upper body up and glanced back at Gu Pingyue, thinking, Exactly. Well said.
“I know he’s perceptive…that’s exactly why I’m saying it within earshot!”
Xiang Yuyan poked the corner of Gu Congjue’s mouth again, turning his son’s head back and gently forcing him to focus on his milk.
“I can tell this kid is sharp as a tack. He just can’t express his thoughts yet. Who knows how many little schemes are running through that tiny head of his!”
Having his mind read so accurately, Gu Congjue shuddered. He hastily tossed the empty bottle aside and wiggled his plump little body, burrowing deeper into the blankets.
“See, see! I talk about him and he gets upset!” Xiang Yuyan set the bottle aside and playfully pinched his son’s soft, chubby thigh in mock frustration. “You little rascal, you hide the moment I say a word. Am I a tiger or a lion? What are you so afraid of?”
Safely hidden under the covers, Gu Congjue buried his face into his little pillow and thought, I wouldn’t be scared of a tiger or a lion. But you? I’m genuinely terrified.
A tiger or a lion couldn’t reach him, but Xiang Yuyan was fully capable of dishing out a light swat.
“Don’t call him that anyway,” Gu Pingyue adjusted the blankets to make sure the baby wouldn’t suffocate. “‘Little mute’ sounds awful. I’m worried people who don’t know any better will think there’s actually something wrong with our boy. ‘Little useless thing’ is much better. Misunderstandings aside, at least he really is just a helpless little thing right now.”
Gu Congjue: …
I give up. Neither of you is normal…you both have issues.
The little meatball shifted around under the covers, making sure he wasn’t touching Gu Pingyue on his left or Xiang Yuyan on his right. He curled his tiny body up like a little snail and drifted off.
Sleeping on his stomach was great for preventing gas, making it a very comfortable position for an infant. Gu Congjue had originally intended to eavesdrop a bit longer once he settled in, but the heavy wave of drowsiness that follows a full stomach washed over him, making his eyelids incredibly heavy.
Losing the battle against the sleep monster, Gu Congjue gave a weak internal struggle before slipping into a deep slumber.
“Sigh, I’m worried,” Xiang Yuyan remarked, taking his hand away from his son’s belly. He propped his head up on his hand, lounging on his side. “I’m genuinely scared his vocal cords or speech development might have an issue. Compared to other babies, our son is just way too quiet. If he’s just choosing not to talk, that’s fine, but what if it’s a physical inability? What do we do then?”
Xiang Yuyan recalled the day Gu Congjue was born.
That brat had been incredibly stubborn. No matter how much the nurses stimulated him, he wouldn’t cry or make a fuss! While a baby who doesn’t cry is considered an absolute angel, being too quiet inevitably made them anxious as parents.
Gu Pingyue reached over to squeeze his partner’s shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t overthink it. He’s only five months old; it’s completely normal for his speech skills to be underdeveloped. He’s due for his next Hepatitis B shot next month anyway, so why don’t we book a full checkup and have the pediatrician take a look?”
Because of the pregnancy and birth, both Gu Pingyue and Xiang Yuyan had put a portion of their work on hold. By the second month postpartum, Xiang Yuyan had recovered significantly, so the two returned to their careers, leaving a portion of the childcare duties to a trusted nanny.
Even though the nanny was wonderful and highly dependable, the couple still had their worries. They were terrified that their busy schedules would cause them to neglect their son, making them miss out on crucial milestones in his growth.
Because of this, they intentionally cleared their schedules for major events, wanting to be as hands-on as possible. Things like vaccinations and medical checkups were strictly non-negotiable; they had blocked out these two days well in advance to ensure they could take him to the hospital together.
Since they were going anyway, adding a checkup wouldn’t be any trouble. Without a second thought, Xiang Yuyan nodded. “Alright, let’s get the doctor to run a thorough checkup then.”
The two then split up their nightly chores. One took care of washing the bottles and prepping the late-night formula to place in the warmer, while the other gently wiped the sleeping baby’s face and turned him over.
Once everything was done, the couple washed up and climbed into bed. With Xiang Yuyan on one side and Gu Pingyue on the other, they sandwiched the warm “little furnace” of a baby between them. In perfect synchronization, they stopped talking and entered their own battery-saving sleep modes.
They tried their best to give in to exhaustion and fall asleep quickly.
However, due to their demanding work schedules, they hadn’t shared a bed in nearly two weeks. If it hadn’t been for sorting out their son’s household registration today, they wouldn’t have managed to carve out this two-day break. They wouldn’t have had this chance to simply lie next to each other, quietly soaking in the warmth of the person beside them.
“…Yuyan?”
After tossing and turning for a bit, Gu Pingyue opened his eyes while staring at the ceiling, calling out experimentally.
Xiang Yuyan, who was facing inward, hadn’t fallen asleep either. His brows twitched slightly behind closed eyelids. “Hmm?”
“Not asleep yet?”
“Nope.” Xiang Yuyan kept one hand resting gently on his son’s chubby tummy. “Can’t sleep.”
The expected response made Gu Pingyue unconsciously swallow hard.
He carefully extended a hand, pushing his luck a bit further. “Then… should we…?”
The distinct rustling of sheets echoed from beneath the heavy duvet that covered the two adults and their baby.
Xiang Yuyan bit his lower lip against the sudden wave of heat. The hand that had been resting on his son’s stomach was instinctively pulled back, gripping the bedsheets tightly until the fabric bunched up like a blooming flower.
“Mmm, wait… hold on a second…”
“What’s wrong?” Gu Pingyue froze mid-movement, his tone instantly shifting to one of concern. “Are you feeling unwell?”
It had been over five months since the birth, and reasonably speaking, Xiang Yuyan’s body had fully healed…they had actually resumed their intimate life around the three-month mark. But during those times, Gu Pingyue had been incredibly cautious, never daring to use too much force.
Tonight was no exception. The moment Xiang Yuyan showed even a hint of hesitation, Gu Pingyue stopped completely, asking nervously about his well-being.
“I’m sorry, Yuyan. I got carried away,” Gu Pingyue’s voice was raspy and low, sounding incredibly striking in the quiet, dark room. “Caught up in the moment, I lost my self-control a bit.”
Xiang Yuyan let out a breathless, quiet laugh. “It’s not that… I was going to say… can you move our son away?”
His voice grew smaller and smaller with every word, his face burning with absolute embarrassment.
“You can do whatever you want to me, but don’t do it while he’s sleeping right next to us. Looking at his little face makes me feel so self-conscious… Didn’t you say babies are perceptive? What if he notices what we’re doing?”
Gu Pingyue suddenly understood, letting out a low, deep chuckle. “Right. I got so impatient I almost forgot the little guy was right here.”
“Don’t move, I’ll handle it. Let me pull the crib over first.”
“Be careful,” Xiang Yuyan gave the baby’s belly a few gentle, rhythmic pats, trying to ensure he was deeply asleep. “The little brat is incredibly sharp. Whatever you do, don’t wake him up. Actually, why don’t you move him along with his pillow?”
With their own secret agenda driving them, the two scrambled around in a quiet frenzy, finally lifting the little meatball with the utmost care.
Gu Pingyue held his breath, navigating his way to the crib with awkward, hyper-cautious precision. He reached out, gently placing the baby down before slowly pulling up the small blanket.
He let out a sigh of relief, thoroughly convinced he had executed the move flawlessly. What he didn’t realize, however, was that the little troublemaker had already been shaken awake.
As Gu Pingyue was tucking him in, Gu Congjue’s eyes fluttered half-open, his foggy mind trying to process the sudden relocation.
He was utterly baffled. What on earth are they doing?
Why did they have to pick me up and move me away right when I was having a perfectly good nap?
