Transmigrated as the Chongxi Wife of a Critically Ill Young Lady - Chapter 32
Chapter 32
Cen Xia finished wiping her body and changing her clothes, and settled her in a sitting position, leaning against the soft headboard.
Jiwanching’s body had no support and kept slumping to the sides. Cen Xia was afraid to let go, so she eventually placed two pillows on either side of her to prop her up.
Cen Xia brought the bowl of noodle soup from the bedside table, tasted it, and found the temperature was perfect. “Dinner’s ready, Sister!” she said.
Jiwanching looked in the direction of her voice and raised her hand.
—”It smells so good, Xiaxia. It looks delicious!”
Tears rolled down Cen Xia’s cheeks, but her voice was still sweet and clear: “Of course. It was made by Chef Cen. How could it not be delicious, Sister?”
Jiwanching parted her lips, signaling for Cen Xia to feed her.
Cen Xia scooped a spoonful and brought it closer.
Up close, Jiwanching’s mouth was full of mucus from the pain. She sensed the motion and slid her tongue out slightly.
Cen Xia put the spoon back down. She said, “No, Sister, you have to rinse your mouth first!”
Jiwanching narrowed her phoenix-like eyes, and she weakly raised her arm in complaint.
—”Such a hassle!”
Cen Xia took a few oral swabs and some saline to wipe the secretions from inside her mouth.
Jiwanching seemed very impatient. She reached out and pushed her.
—”Is it ready? I’m hungry!”
Cen Xia delivered the sweet and smooth soup to her mouth. Jiwanching’s tongue moved, and she swallowed it. She raised her hand.
—”It’s a little sour, but very delicious!”
Cen Xia froze. The soup was made from fish broth; she hadn’t added any tomatoes.
Jiwanching opened her mouth, wanting a second mouthful, but Cen Xia didn’t move.
She couldn’t even taste it. Why? She was only gone to make soup for a little while, and she had lost her sense of taste…
Cen Xia forced back her sobs, her face contorting in an ugly expression. Jiwanching couldn’t see it. She waited for the second spoonful, her lightless eyes staring at her.
Cen Xia finally scooped the second spoonful and said, “Look how hungry my sister is. Call ‘Xiaxia,’ and I’ll feed you one more spoonful.”
Jiwanching pursed her lips. She couldn’t respond.
Cen Xia moved the spoon closer. “I’m not teasing you, Sister. Hurry up and eat!”
She didn’t know how much longer she could keep up this act.
Jiwanching couldn’t swallow after a few mouthfuls, but to make Cen Xia feel better, she wanted to eat two more.
Cen Xia said, “No more. Dr. Yan said to eat small, frequent meals. Sister needs to follow the doctor’s orders!”
Jiwanching reluctantly pursed her lips and raised her hand.
—”Don’t listen to him. He’s just a big liar.”
Cen Xia didn’t say anything. She helped Jiwanching lie down and then said, “Sister, rest for a bit. I’ll go wash the pot for us, I’ll be right back!”
Jiwanching reached out and grabbed her, shaking her head vigorously.
Cen Xia tried to coax her, “Sister, be good. Otherwise, we won’t have a pot to cook with next time!”
Jiwanching held her with one hand and made a difficult gesture with the other.
—”Let someone else wash it. You stay with me. I won’t let you leave me!”
She was scared. She was very afraid that Cen Xia would abandon her in her current state.
Cen Xia’s heart felt like it was being gouged. She wanted to go ask Yan Shuang, she wanted to ask him what on earth was going on. She was only gone for a moment, just a moment…
Jiwanching held her hand and wouldn’t let go.
Cen Xia finally gave in. “We’ll wash the pot tomorrow. I’ll stay with you, Sister. Rest for a bit. Be good!”
Jiwanching felt a little more at ease. She wanted to shift her body to the side but couldn’t move. She patted the small space next to her, signaling to Cen Xia.
—”Come up here!”
Cen Xia kicked off her shoes and squeezed into the spot she had patted. She hugged her and said, “I’ll stay by your side, holding you as you enter a beautiful dreamland!”
Jiwanching’s body wriggled in her arms. She was afraid of pushing her off and wanted to move a little further in, but she had no strength.
Cen Xia hugged her and snuggled toward the center of the bed. “Go to sleep now. I’ll tell you a story!”
“Once upon a time, there was a lion who loved to brag. One day, a mosquito buzzed by his ear. He impatiently shook his head…”
The childish fairy tale, accompanied by Cen Xia’s fluctuating tone, made Jiwanching bury her head in her neck. Her consciousness gradually faded. Tears seeped from the corners of her eyes, slowly sliding down and wetting Cen Xia’s shoulder.
Cen Xia held her, silently crying as well. When Jiwanching was fast asleep, she slowly eased her arm out from under her and secretly slipped off the bed to find Yan Shuang downstairs.
Her emotions were a wreck. She knocked on the door in a frenzy. Yan Shuang felt a prickle on his scalp and let her in.
Cen Xia’s eyes were red. She tried her best to control her tone: “Dr. Yan, Sister can’t see and has no sense of taste. Why? I was only gone long enough to make a pot of soup, barely an hour. Why?” Halfway through, her voice broke into a sob: “She can’t see… She can’t see, Dr. Yan…”
Yan Shuang maintained his usual cold demeanor.
Cen Xia’s emotions broke. She spoke angrily, a string of questions: “Tell me, why? Why did Sister become like this? She was fine when I left. What did you do to her? Why did she become like this now?”
For a moment, Yan Shuang’s mind flashed back to a scene of a medical dispute many years ago. He was once questioned just like this by a patient’s family.
Cen Xia was still crying.
Many voices were jumbled in Yan Shuang’s head, almost shattering him.
He raised his gaze, his eyes filled with ice, and his voice was chillingly calm: “Ms. Cen, you ask me why? Then who is General Manager Jiang?”
Cen Xia was stunned by the question.
Yan Shuang said faintly, “You gave her light, you gave her hope, and then you personally extinguished that little flame. What is she supposed to do? What am I supposed to do?”
In an instant, the memory of “General Manager Jiang’s” phone call from earlier in the day flashed through Cen Xia’s mind. She didn’t know why she was so panicked when she heard that “Xiaxia.” Why did she subconsciously look at Jiwanching’s face? She didn’t need to explain anything. She was just a stranger. She didn’t need to explain anything at all. Why, why…
Yan Shuang’s emotions stabilized a bit. He saw Cen Xia standing in a daze in front of him and suddenly realized what a foolish thing he had just done. After several seconds, he slowly said, “I’m sorry!”
Those three words might be a simple apology for an ordinary person, but for Yan Shuang, they were not. Back then, he would rather be slandered and attacked by the world than defend himself or bow his head to anyone. But now, at this very moment, he had apologized to this girl.
Cen Xia’s mind was pulled back. She belatedly reacted to his “I’m sorry.” She shook her head repeatedly, and also repeated, “I’m sorry, Dr. Yan, it’s my fault, I’m sorry…”
Yan Shuang clenched and unclenched his fist several times before once again resuming his persona as a doctor.
He said, “The Madam was simply unable to bear the physical pain during the forced needle treatment and temporarily lost her sight and taste. After a good night’s sleep, she should recover tomorrow. Don’t worry!”
A light flickered in Cen Xia’s eyes. She bowed deeply to Yan Shuang in a very respectful manner: “Thank you, Dr. Yan. I’m sorry for what happened just now!”
Yan Shuang took a deep breath and, for once, tried to comfort her: “She’s under too much pressure. She wants to protect you, and she’s afraid of losing you, so she’s desperately trying to stand up. But her current physical condition can’t handle any further treatment. We have to go slowly!”
Cen Xia nodded repeatedly and said, “I understand, Dr. Yan. I’ll figure something out!”
After all, this was her and Jiwanching’s business. Yan Shuang and Tang Shaoyun were already doing their best as friends. There was no reason for her to expect others to take on this burden. This was something she had to handle herself.
When she came out of Yan Shuang’s room, Cen Xia’s head was spinning. She tried to call the system with her mind.
But the system, ever since its last bug, hadn’t appeared in her mind for a long time. This time was no exception. Cen Xia called out several times, but it didn’t respond.
She endured the severe headache, trying to piece together the plot from the story. There was no such person as Jiang He. But why did she suddenly appear and call her “Xiaxia” for no reason? She told Jiwanching, “Be careful next time you go out. I’m not always this kind-hearted!”
And that post online… If there wasn’t a profit motive, why would she help an powerless madam who had just married into the Ji family? But if there was a profit motive, the Jiang Corporation was so big, what profit could a wife meant to bring good luck possibly bring her?
A wife meant to bring good luck… Did they know each other before this?
She took out her phone and looked up Jiang He’s personal information online.
Age 24, attended West City No. 1 High School…
Cen Xia pondered this information. A sudden thought struck her. 24? West City No. 1 High School? Wasn’t that the original owner’s school? They had known each other for a long time?
She exited the search. A news flash popped up at the top of the screen: a certain “miss” from a wealthy family was unexpectedly injured. Cen Xia quickly clicked on it.
The time and location were precisely during the crucial moment when they were being chased that afternoon. She remembered that phone call: “Be careful next time you go out. I’m not always this kind-hearted!”
It was her. It was her who swerved when the car behind them tried to rush forward. Without her, they would have never escaped. Jiang He blocked them, which resulted in her getting injured…
So, they not only knew each other, but were they also very close friends?
No, not friends. They were lovers. No friend would risk their own life to protect another’s when their life was threatened. They were lovers.
Jiang He was abroad, and Cen Xia was being forced into a marriage by her parents. When she came back with her accomplishments, she was already married to the Ji family… So all of this was her way of getting justice for her.
Then what about the original owner? Where was the original owner?
Cen Xia tried to think hard. The intense headache made her feel nauseous for a moment. She finally remembered the voice she heard before she transmigrated.
—”Jiang Jiang, I’m so sleepy. I want to have a good long sleep…”
In that instant, everything went black for Cen Xia. She almost fell over. She blinked a few times to regain her vision and slowly stood steady.
The “Jiang Jiang” in that voice was undoubtedly Jiang He. What did “have a good long sleep” mean? Was the original owner still alive?
If she was still alive, where was she now? Why had she come to this world?
If she was no longer alive, did she take her place? If so, what was the difference between her and a murderer? How could she face Jiang He, face Jiwanching, face any of them in the future?
Just then, the system made a “ding” sound. The mechanical voice was stuttering and intermittent.
War… Warning… Mission target… sizz…
Cen Xia’s mind reacted in a second. Something was wrong. Sister was in danger.
