- Chapter 13 - Honesty
Xu Luo was not a novice when it came to carrying Song Yunran. As an experienced hand, she still remembered the technique where to place her hands on the other woman’s body to best leverage her strength. However, just as she had set her stance and was prepared to lift her, the person sitting in the wheelchair waiting to be served raised a hand and lightly rested it on Xu Luo’s shoulder. Xu Luo felt a weight on her shoulder, and in the next second, Song Yunran had leaned into her.
Xu Luo froze.
“What is it?” Song Yunran extended her other hand to join the first, completing the motion of hooking her arms around Xu Luo’s neck.
Xu Luo allowed those two slender, delicate arms to hang around her neck, stifling a breath for a few seconds. “…You’re being too proactive.”
“Hmm?”
“You broke my rhythm.”
“Ah, is that so?” Song Yunran withdrew her hands and gave a faint, graceful smile. “Then let’s do it according to Luo Luo’s rhythm.”
Satisfied, Xu Luo grabbed the other woman’s hands and placed them back on her own shoulders. She lowered her stance slightly and swept Song Yunran up into a princess carry.
Song Yunran rested her head softly against the crook of Xu Luo’s neck, letting out a low chuckle. “Luo Luo smells so good.”
The sensation of her breath tickled Xu Luo’s skin. She tilted her head to avoid it, which caused her footing to become unsteady, walking in a zig-zag “snake” pattern.
“Don’t blow air on my neck, it tickles,” she panted, warning her. “If it gets too itchy, I won’t be able to stop myself from throwing you out.”
Song Yunran smiled. “Alright, I’ll listen to Luo Luo.”
As she said this, she continued to exhale right against Xu Luo’s neck.
Xu Luo: “…”
Did she really think Xu Luo wouldn’t dare throw her?
Xu Luo pursed her lips but obediently placed the woman down onto the specialized chair beside the bathtub. Then, she turned around, placing her back to Song Yunran.
Half a minute later, she turned back around only to see… a fully dressed Song Yunran.
“Why haven’t you taken your clothes off?” Xu Luo asked, bewildered.
The whole point of her turning around was to wait for Song Yunran to undress.
Song Yunran wore an expression of confusion. “Isn’t Luo Luo going to help me undress?”
Xu Luo was even more confused. “Huh?”
The two of them locked eyes in a silent stalemate.
Xu Luo’s gaze landed on Song Yunran’s arms, confirming that they were perfectly functional. She truly didn’t understand why she had to be the one to undress her. Her face showed her indignation. “Can’t you take your clothes off yourself?!”
Song Yunran lowered her eyes innocently. “I just didn’t know Luo Luo didn’t want to help me. When Mother-in-law bathes me, she helps me undress. If Luo Luo doesn’t want to, I’ll do it myself. It was already a lot of trouble asking Luo Luo to help me bathe in the first place…”
“Eh?” Hearing this explanation, Xu Luo immediately wiped the indignation from her face. “So that’s how it is.”
Since this was the standard procedure when the elderly housekeeper helped her, there didn’t seem to be anything to get angry about.
She quickly reconciled with herself and began helping Song Yunran take off her clothes.
As Xu Luo busied herself with the task, Song Yunran the one being served had a flash of amusement in her eyes.
She had lied. She didn’t like being touched by others at all; therefore, if she could do something herself, she would never let someone else do it. She was perfectly capable of undressing herself. She just… rather enjoyed teasing the person in front of her.
What a cute creature, she thought.
Once the top was off and it came time for the pants, Xu Luo remembered how much the other woman cared about her legs and paused hesitantly. She was worried that by doing this, she might provoke another “death flag” for herself.
She looked up at Song Yunran from a crouching position.
Song Yunran looked down at her. Realizing Xu Luo’s hesitation, she smiled and said, “The water is going to get cold.”
That was the signal of permission.
Xu Luo glanced at her, suppressed the strange feeling in her heart, and pulled the pants down.
Song Yunran’s lower body had been paralyzed for many years. No amount of high-end therapy could prevent the muscles in those legs from wasting away; thus, they truly weren’t pleasant to look at.
Xu Luo thought back to the incident at the pet hospital that afternoon and the orange cat. The orange cat’s surgery had been a success, but the doctor had clearly stated that the cat’s leg would never return to normal and might leave permanent aftereffects.
When the doctor said those words, Song Yunran had been standing right there. She had looked at the cat, and something had flickered briefly in her eyes.
If Song Yunran’s legs weren’t disabled, her life would surely be far more expansive than it was now.
At the Mo family’s charity banquet, when the “Mermaid’s Tear” healed the burn scars on Zhou Miao’s face, what had Song Yunran been thinking?
Did she really feel no regret about missing out on the Mermaid’s Tear? Did she not envy Zhou Miao?
“Luo Luo—”
“What?”
“You’re spacing out.”
Xu Luo snapped back to reality, gave Song Yunran a complex look, and lifted her into the bathtub.
She took on the role of a bath attendant, but because she was unskilled, she was flustered the entire time.
“This is Luo Luo’s first time helping someone bathe, isn’t it?” As the recipient of the service, Song Yunran couldn’t help but laugh.
Xu Luo was currently scrubbing the other woman’s back and answered distractedly, “Who said it’s my first time?”
“There was someone else?” Song Yunran turned around upon hearing this.
“Don’t move!” Xu Luo quickly tried to hold her still, but it was too late. In her clumsiness, her fingernail swiped across the other woman’s back as she turned. Against the flawless, jade-like skin, it left a vivid red scratch.
“Ah—” She froze.
“It hurts.” Song Yunran twisted her head to look at her own back.
Xu Luo quickly covered the scratch with her palm, but the mark was long and her hand was too small. Song Yunran could see the state of her back quite clearly.
“You can’t blame me for this!” Xu Luo analyzed the situation. “The primary reason for this scratch is that you moved suddenly. The secondary reason is that your skin is too thin!”
“Pfft!” Song Yunran burst out laughing. She took Xu Luo’s hand, squeezed her fingertips, and asked, “Then where does the fact that Luo Luo’s nails are too long rank on the list of reasons?”
Xu Luo said naturally, “My nails are innocent.”
“Mhm, you’re right.” Song Yunran’s eyes were brimming with laughter.
Xu Luo peeked at her and saw that she truly didn’t mind. Relieved, she was now in the mood to tease. “Song Yunran, honestly, your back is so white that leaving a couple of marks on it actually looks quite nice.”
Song Yunran realized something. “Is this Luo Luo’s fetish?”
Xu Luo replied with an air of righteousness, “Sister, what kind of strange things are you saying to an upright person like me?”
“Pfft!”
Song Yunran laughed again, laughing for a long time. Xu Luo finished her task amidst the laughter.
When Xu Luo pushed a refreshed Song Yunran out of the bathroom, the bedroom door opened from the outside. Mother-in-law Fu appeared at the doorway. Seeing Xu Luo in the room, the older woman paused, stunned.
Xu Luo was even more stunned. Wasn’t Mother-in-law Fu supposed to be on leave?
“Mother-in-law, you finished your business and came back early?” Song Yunran suddenly spoke.
Mother-in-law Fu looked at Song Yunran. Song Yunran simply smiled, a faint, calm smile.
“…Yes.” Mother-in-law Fu went along with the lie.
In truth, she hadn’t taken any leave today. She hadn’t taken leave in a very long time.
Xu Luo never considered that she might have been lied to. She didn’t think Song Yunran would fabricate a lie just to order her around how bored would Song Yunran have to be?
She believed that Mother-in-law Fu appearing at this time was indeed because she had finished her errands early.
Since the housekeeper was back, there was no need for her to continue as a temporary nurse. She greeted Mother-in-law Fu and returned to her own room.
A few days later, the fat orange cat was granted permission to be discharged. Xu Luo received a call from the hospital and hurried over to pick up the cat. However, when she reached the hospital entrance, she discovered that Song Yunran had also just arrived from her company. The two of them ran into each other at the door.
“Why are you here?” Xu Luo asked Song Yunran. The question was sincere; she truly didn’t know why Song Yunran had come.
Song Yunran got out of the car with a face full of smiles. “I also received the notification.”
Xu Luo was incredulous. “What’s wrong with this hospital? I’m the one who paid for the hospitalization alone. Why was the notification sent to both of us?”
Song Yunran said, “Then why don’t you go ask the hospital?”
Xu Luo gave a “tsk.”
Ever since Song Yunran helped her get the cat to the hospital, her attitude toward Song Yunran had become increasingly casual.
The two eventually entered the hospital together.
Upon entering, they saw a young girl holding a selfie stick in the lobby, doing a live stream and filming the cats and dogs in the hospital.
The girl spotted them as well. Her eyes lit up, and she immediately moved toward them, intending to include them in the frame.
Xu Luo didn’t know much about the live-streaming industry and didn’t realize what the phone on the selfie stick was doing; she just stared at it. Song Yunran lightly pulled her hand and whispered, “That girl wants to film us.”
“Does she pay?” Xu Luo reflexively followed up.
She hadn’t found the original owner’s bank card yet, and the amount of money she could use on her phone without a password was very limited. After the incident with the orange cat, her balance was visibly lacking.
She was short on money, so she was very enthusiastic about any money-making endeavors.
“…Probably not,” Song Yunran said.
When Xu Luo heard there was no money involved, her mood deflated. “Then I don’t want her to film me.”
“It’s too late, she’s already coming over,” Song Yunran said. The next second, she yanked Xu Luo’s hand. Caught off guard, Xu Luo stumbled, her body tilting as she ended up sitting on Song Yunran’s lap. Song Yunran didn’t give Xu Luo time to react, immediately pressing Xu Luo’s head against her own neck.
“Please don’t film us, sorry, we don’t want to be in the frame,” Song Yunran said to the approaching girl.
The girl watched the scene of Song Yunran pulling Xu Luo into her arms, completely stunned. It took her a long while to mutter an “oh,” apologize, and leave. As she walked away, she kept looking back with a strange expression.
She had indeed wanted to film the two beauties, but she wasn’t a rude person and had intended to ask for permission first. The way the beauties handled the situation left her… well, wide-eyed.
On the other side, Song Yunran watched the live-stream girl leave. Once she was far away, she spoke slowly to the person sitting in her lap: “Alright, Luo Luo, you can lift your head now. That person has gone far away and won’t be able to film you.”
Xu Luo: “…”
She lifted her head.
“Song Yunran—”
“Yes?”
“What are you doing?”
Why did she suddenly pull her?!
Song Yunran said with a smile, “Luo Luo said she didn’t want to be filmed. I was afraid the lens would catch you, so for safety’s sake, I helped Luo Luo block it.”
Xu Luo: “…”
“Is something wrong?” Song Yunran asked when she didn’t speak.
Xu Luo covered her face with her hands. “I just realized that compared to being filmed, being stared at by a crowd of people is even worse.”
Everyone in the lobby was looking at them!
